Bhadra describes the six realms as a mirror in which to fully know the particulars of our own self created universe. Here, we learn how the presence of Avalokitesvara in the God Realm teaches of impermanence through music. Samādhi is the Sanskrit word for a state of peaceful, integrated absorption the mind can reach through meditation. And people's faces in meditation have been a source of fascination (and distraction) for documentary filmmaker Hartley Woolf since he began his own Buddhist practice. “I can't help but enjoy taking in all the different expressions around me in the shrine room,” he says, “and wondering what's going on inside the mind behind.” Join us for a delightful conversation between an artist and some of his subjects (Bhadra, Eugene Furniss and Maitrijyoti) as we explore the beautiful intimacy of this unique art project. In the most mindful way, Hartley sets out to capture something of the mystery of meditation, expressed in the faces of a diverse set of humans trying to be present with their experience. The result is an extraordinary book of portrait photography and we are privileged to hear reflections after the fact from some of those sitting and from the artist himself. Self-consciousness and self-perception, what we look for in people's faces and expressions, the vulnerability of meditating with others and of being witnessed – this conversation flows, you might say, like the breath, opening into a space of genuine shared gratitude for a memorable shared experience of sitting in stillness, and being in relationship. Produced and presented by Candradasa, edited by Zac Pomphrey and Candradasa *** "When I began this project, it was simply about capturing the subtlety of human facial expression. It quickly became about much more than that, however: my emotional connection to the sitter in that moment; the impact the lights, camera and my presence had on their meditation; the very act of watching for those subtle changes and deciding when to press the shutter. All these things became just as interesting—if not more so. I saw all kinds of emotions play out on my sitters' faces. They may not have all reached such advanced states as samādhi, but I did see a lot of vulnerability, pleasure, discomfort, and courage. I'm very grateful to them all for allowing me (and you) into their intimate worlds of practice for a brief moment." So now we're going into 'Live to Give' campaign. For those of you who are moping around, feeling sad, 'What happened to Bhadra? It's over already? So fast! What am I going to do now with my life?' We've got Bhagavad-gītās, and now it seems easy, doesn't it? 'Oh, no problem!' So, what we are going for is a baseline of 5 million. A few years ago, when we talked about going for a million, everyone said, 'How would that be possible?' Now we're just creeping up to the 5 million point. Let's take a look at a few slides. This is how it looks. It's not as choppy as the Bhadra graph that we have; we're making a steady climb.Bhagavad-gītā is easy! We can make great strides. 2025, we want to be poised for 2026 to hit the 5 million, or pass it, smash it! So, our goal for this year worldwide is 4.6 million Bhagavad-gītās. So, let's keep that in mind. You can advertise it to all your local people—everybody's invited! Everybody on the planet can distribute multiple cases of Bhagavad-gītā, and people are welcome to give millions of dollars to help this happen. The Christians do it; they do way more in Bible. So, let's get going. We don't have much time for this planet. We have to get into this very enthusiastically. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #bhadrapurnima #bookdistribution #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
Congratulations to everybody! It's the driving force behind our ISKCON organization when we have something worthy to push for and to challenge ourselves. And this is what's happening through Bhadrā; we're rising to new levels. By fully concentrating on distributing books for Kṛṣṇa, one is fully absorbed in Kṛṣṇa. This is Samādhi. It's a very special kind of Samādhi because it takes courage to present Śrīmad Bhāgavatam to others. It also takes one's own fortification through hearing Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and understanding that it's life-changing. I have noted that devotees who come into this kind of Samādhi improve in all areas of their lives. They become better at their sādhanā because they want to be more absorbed; they want to be more effective. They also become more efficient in using their time. Everything good comes from thinking of Kṛṣṇa and thinking of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and how to distribute, It is not different from thinking of Kṛṣṇa, but it's very special in the sense that Prabhupāda advocates throughout the Śrī Caitanya Caritāmṛta and the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and the Bhagavad Gītā that our main means of pleasing Kṛṣṇa is to preach. So this is the ideal way of thinking of Kṛṣṇa and being in Samādhi. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
Your genius is that you make the impossible possible through creativity, compassion, and unshakable faith. In the words of your spiritual master, you have devised ways to organize, empower, and unite devotees in their service. The Bhadra campaign is your gift to the Vaiṣṇava world, a visionary plan to flood households with the jewel of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam sets by a date blessed by the scriptures themselves. With each passing year, the campaign grows, and thousands of devotees in dozens of countries now thrill at the transcendental challenge of placing these sacred volumes into eager hands. Truly, this campaign has become one of the defining legacies of your life—a revival of Śrīla Prabhupāda's dream on a global, global scale. But your greatness extends beyond numbers and strategies. It lies in your deep absorption in the śāstra, your steady practice of devotional service, and your ability to communicate the timeless truths of Kṛṣṇa consciousness in a way that touches the hearts of all. Your mastery of ślokas, both in memory and in realization, makes your lectures shine like the sun, illuminating both the philosophical depths and the practical applications of bhakti. Many testify that your talks are among the finest in our movement: clear, systematic, rich with scriptural authority, and delivered with genuine love for Śrīla Prabhupāda and his followers. Equally inspiring is the way you embody the role of an ideal householder. You and your esteemed wife, Nirukulā Dāsī, have shown how a family life can be fully centered on Kṛṣṇa service. Together, you have nurtured not only yourselves but an entire community of Vaiṣṇavas in Silicon Valley and beyond. The devotees under your care are deeply attached to you because they know your heart beats only for their spiritual welfare. You care for them like a true father, guide them all with wisdom, encourage them with affection, and set the perfect example of balance between personal sādhanā preaching and family life. Dearest Vāiseṣika Prabhu, you are beloved not only in Silicon Valley but throughout the ISKCON world. When devotees speak your name, it is with affection, admiration, and gratitude. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
Bhagavad-gītā, Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam—we do all the books, everything, but it's just so tidy to take care of the basics. And besides, we can see this: here we are in the Fourth Canto. If we read this 108 times, if you all cancel your tickets, and, you know, we won't come to the end of it. We'll still be entering deeper and deeper into this one Canto, what to speak of one chapter, or just the prayers, or something like that. And we conceived of this perpetual distribution chain. In the beginning, the idea of Bhadra-pūrṇimā. Not everybody accepted it, because they were afraid that it would cannibalize the end-of-year marathon, which was non-descript. It was just, ‘do as much as you can.' And actually it started off with just… it used to be 10 days or something like that. Anyway, what's the harm in having perpetual book distribution going on? Because there's unlimited people who are coming to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. They have to be engaged, and Prabhupāda gave us those books, so we might as well plan how to distribute them to the world. On the release of all of them, he gave instructions to print them in large quantities and distribute them, including the Caitanya-caritāmṛta. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #govardhanreadings #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
Bhadra takes us through the myth of Persephone and an experiential exploration of awareness to celebrate the vital contribution the bardo; the in-between state, makes towards the spiritual life. In the Second Chapter of the First Canto, Śrīmad Bhāgavatam says: śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ hṛdy antaḥ stho hy abhadrāṇi vidhunoti suhṛt satām (Text 18) naṣṭa-prāyeṣv abhadreṣu nityaṁ bhāgavata-sevayā bhagavaty uttama-śloke bhaktir bhavati naiṣṭhikī (Text 19) tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaś ca ye ceta etair anāviddhaṁ sthitaṁ sattve prasīdati (Text 20) evaṁ prasanna-manaso bhagavad-bhakti-yogataḥ bhagavat-tattva-vijñānaṁ mukta-saṅgasya jāyate (Text 21) bhidyate hṛdaya-granthiś chidyante sarva-saṁśayāḥ kṣīyante cāsya karmāṇi dṛṣṭa evātmanīśvare (Text 22) In this paragraph spoken by Sūta Gosvāmī, he says that the main means for elevating oneself to pure consciousness, or Kṛṣṇa consciousness, is to participate in the hearing of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. He starts by saying: śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ. If you sit for Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and just listen submissively, then you're gaining spiritual credit, or puṇya. This goes into a bank account in your heart, and you never lose it, as Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad Gītā : nehābhikrama-nāśo 'sti pratyavāyo na vidyate sv-alpam apy asya dharmasya trāyate mahato bhayāt (BG 2.40). When you do something for Kṛṣṇa and you make advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, it's never lost; it goes to your eternal credit. He goes on to say that by hearing Śrīmad Bhāgavatam gradually, anything which is abhadra is winnowed out. Everyone knows what bhadra means, right? Bhadra means something auspicious, but abhadra means those things that are inauspicious. By hearing the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, gradually any of the anarthas, or unwanted things, that are within our consciousness are winnowed out by the process of hearing. He then says, "evaṁ prasanna-manasaḥ," which means that one's mind becomes happy. That's very difficult in this world because there is always one anxiety after another. When you finish solving one problem, there's another. But by hearing the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and allowing the spiritual sound vibration to enter your ears and heart, your mind gradually becomes happy. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

Someone told me the other day that we've done over 150,000 sets of Bhāgavatams from our concerted efforts. You know, so many of these things happen when we're not looking because we're just looking down at what we're doing right now and what we're going to do next. But together, as a team, 150,000 sets of Bhāgavatams! Inconceivable six years ago. But somehow or other, by the combined energy of all of you working together and all of the all over the world devotees feeling the same impetus to do service for service, and believing in that magic of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, as Prabhupāda did when he was aboard the Jaladūta, when he said, "This will be the tip of the spear. This is what will create the revolution in the impious lives of the world's misdirected civilization." Here we are. It's the launch of Bhādra. We have full permission from Śrīla Prabhupāda to give our mind and attention in, as he puts it, "practical samādhi" of distributing Bhāgavatam sets. We have the encouragement from the Bhāgavatam itself, from Śrīla Śukadeva Goswami, who included the verse that says, "Do this! Give it to other people. You'll go back to Godhead in the process." Let everybody go back to Godhead. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
The krishna-ekadaśi (11th day of the waning moon) right before Phalahārinī Pūjā is known as the Apara-ekadaśi and it coincides with Bhadrakālī Jayanti, the celebration of Mā in her "auspicious" form. While the word "Bhadra" (which can be both a noun and an adjective) means something like "auspicious", "noble", "protectress" etc. we have to ask: what does that really mean? Is this a gentle (saumya) form of Kālī as contrasted with how She is usually depicted in Her smaśāna/ghora (cremation ground/fierce) form? Or do we just have to update our understanding of the word "auspicious" to include even those aspects of life that the mind rejects? In this talk, we read excerpts from Swami Vivekananda's Bengali poem to Kālĩ "And Let Shyāma Dance There" we we learn about the Worship of the Terrible and Mā's Non-Dual, All-Inclusive Form which will radically change the way we understand "auspicious"-ness in the context of spiritual life. Also, we tell some stories from the Puranas to make the case that Vīra-bhadra, in the well-known immolation of Sati/destrcution of Daksha's sacrifice story can be seen as synonymous with Bhadrakālī. Of course, I make a case as to why the latter, female version is better, theologically. This will help us understand why Mā in many of her sahasranāmas stotravalis (thousand names hymns) is called "Daksha-yajña-vināśinī", the one who destroys Daksha's sacrifice. May this be an offering to Her, the auspicious one, who destroys all false ideas and tears down all pretense!PS: here is a playlist (our signature series, our flagship course), all of our talks on Mā.Support the showLectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrM

ŚB 5.18.1-2Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Bhadraśravā, the son of Dharmarāja, rules the tract of land known as Bhadrāśva-varṣa. Just as Lord Śiva worships Saṅkarṣaṇa in Ilāvṛta-varṣa, Bhadraśravā, accompanied by his intimate servants and all the residents of the land, worships the plenary expansion of Vāsudeva known as Hayaśīrṣa. Lord Hayaśīrṣa is very dear to the devotees, and He is the director of all religious principles. Fixed in the topmost trance, Bhadraśravā and his associates offer their respectful obeisances to the Lord and chant the following prayers with careful pronunciation. The ruler Bhadraśravā and his intimate associates utter the following prayer: We offer our respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the reservoir of all religious principles, who cleanses the heart of the conditioned soul in this material world. Again and again we offer our respectful obeisances unto Him.Please feel free to join our Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Telegram group chat (for both prabhujīs and mātājīs): https://t.me/iskmnews

When making offerings, we want to bring the best to Kṛṣṇa and his representative. And the best of what we have to offer is what the Lord and his devotees, specifically His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda , likes most, which is to hear the results of book distribution around the world. As we know from hearing from Prabhupāda's servants, he was eager to open the sankīrtan newsletter first to hear the results. He also said that it gave him solace and made him feel like a young man when he heard the results of the sankīrtan. I congratulate everybody today, all of us as a global team working hard to bring the rains of benediction on the world. When we sing, “Saṁsara-dāvānala-līḍha-loka-trāṇāya kāruṇya-ghanāghanatvam,” the absolute truth rains down mercy like a cloud through the pure devotee and, in this case, through the pen of Śrīla Prabhupāda, who has taken his speech that he spoke into a dictaphone and then it's been abstracted in writing. What to speak of pictures of Kṛṣṇa and the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa in the spiritual world. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the unparalleled literature that Lord Caitanya called the 'Amala Purāṇa' and that Prabhupāda said would be the means by which people all over the world would be purified and come to the spiritual platform. We've all engaged in this activity together and now we here celebrate by offering the results to Śrīla Prabhupāda. So, we'll start today by .... In Ep 1365 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta brings in ThePrint's legal experts Bhadra Sinha and Apoorva Mandhani to explain the nuances of the judgment and what it means going forward.

Leaders come and go, but institutions stay forever. This is the central takeaway of a new book by Subhashish Bhadra, Caged Tiger: How Too Much Government Is Holding Indians Back.Subhashish is an economist whose career has straddled both the policy and corporate worlds. He has worked at a leading global management consulting firm, a venture capital firm, and a tech start-up, working closely with CEOs, entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, politicians and academics throughout his career. His new book is a call to action that encourages Indians to move beyond their fixation with leaders and focus instead on building strong state institutions. While discussions of state capacity are typically the stuff of academic conference rooms and think tank seminars, Bhadra believes they should be at the core of everyday discussions Indians have on the future of their democracy.Subhashish joins Milan on the show this week to discuss his motivations for writing the book, the institutional flaws in Indian democracy, the need for a new “social contract” on welfare, and the appropriate balance between states and markets in India. Plus, Subhashish explains what ordinary citizens can do to change the status quo. In this podcast we cover - 1. Nuances of trust in the Indian society 2. Frameworks for understanding institutions and actively engaging in public discourse 3. The journey of writing a deeply researched non-fiction book Subhashish Bhadra is an economist by training. He received an MPhil in economics from the University of Oxford on the Rhodes Scholarship and a BA in economics from St. Stephen's College, New Delhi. His career has straddled both the policy and corporate worlds. He spent over half a decade working in public policy, especially on issues of technology policy, regulatory governance and digital rights. As part of his job, he has funded many of India's leading think tanks and helped shape the policy discourse in these areas. He has worked at a leading global management consulting firm, a venture capital firm and a tech start-up, working closely with CEOs, entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, politicians and academics throughout his career. He has also published several articles in leading dailies like the Times of India, Hindustan Times and Indian Express.
Virtually everything about the path is covered when we consider impermanence: death, rebirth, linear time, eternity, presence, change, transition, attachment, identification, freedom, unity, fear, projections, denial, the divine path of growing old, groundlessness, surrender, grace, etc. Is it life or attachment that we wish to prolong? We are not able to fully profit from the path until we face death. Nothing exists as a permanent entity, but we suffer when we do not live this truth. Bhadra Mitchell, a long-time spiritual practitioner, discusses the learning that occurred for her in the process of living with cancer and having her house burn down in a wildfire. She speaks of her experience including surrender to others who provided her care; groundlessness and letting go of attachments and identification as an artist; compassion for others who live in situations of hunger and paralysis; recognition that what happens in life is ultimately out of our control; appreciation for the love, help, and care of others; and acceptance for how life has gone. It's possible to see the circumstances that brought us to face impermanence as a gift—at least in retrospect—and to realize that we can't always get what we want but we get what we need. We always have to continue to work with identification and attachment. Mind is a binary, “yes-no,” “good-bad” mechanism. Making judgments is useless because we are not in touch with the big picture when we do this. Ego creates division and the assumption of separation from reality or God. When we let go of “yes-no” and “good-bad,” we can step into the present where death does not exist. While this can just be a theoretical perspective, we sometimes tap into the present where there is unity and love. We usually think of impermanence in a catastrophic way, but impermanence is here in each moment.
Bhadra shares how emptiness and conditionality combine to fuel bodhicitta and create the foundations of Sangha. Today we extend our home range significantly by speaking with Anindita Bhadra, a researcher in Kolkata, India. Although difficult to estimate, the world population of free-ranging dogs is likely more than 200 million individuals and composes the majority of all dogs. We discuss with Anindita the nature of free-ranging dogs, their origin, behavior, and how they are similar to and different from domestic dogs. We also discuss the communication and social network of free-ranging dogs, and explore how they interact with humans. What emerges is an understanding that may challenge your idea of the very nature of dogs.
