Is there a formula for doing and publishing research on digital phenomena? And if so, it is the same formula as the scripts for IS papers of the past, or has it changed? We discuss how our field has historically worked with reference theories from other disciplines and how we have moved beyond this one way of doing and publishing research to a variety of ways in which we can build theory about digital phenomena. We suggest that reference theories should not be viewed as immutable sacred cows but rather as a tentative basis of received wisdom, which we must problematize and adapt to move knowledge forward. Doing so requires us to find puzzles in the real world that point to things being different instead of new. Episode reading list Truex, D. P., Holmström, J., & Keil, M. (2006). Why you should never write a conceptual paper

Conceptual papers that offer new theories are hard to write and even harder to publish. You do not have empirical data to back up your arguments, which makes the papers easy to reject in the review cycle. We are also typically not well trained in theorizing, and there isn't even a clear process to theorizing we could learn or follow. Does that mean that we shouldn't even try to write theory papers? We ponder these questions, figure out what is so hard in writing conceptual papers – and share a few tricks that might help if you still wanted to write such a paper.  References Berente, N., Gu, B., Recker, J., & Santhanam, R. The news landscape is continuously in flux as new media technologies are developed and audience needs shift. This mix of new tech and new needs, has made it important that audiences be able to understand quantitive information. A research project between Knology and PBS NewsHour is studying just how people consume news and numbers. That project is the focus of this episode of Stats & Stories with guests Jena Barchas-Lichtenstein and Laura Santhanam. Jena Barchas-Lichtenstein is a linguistic anthropologist who leads the media research at Knology, as well as Associate Editor of Public Anthropologies at American Anthropologist. They lead Knology's participatory collaborations with news organizations, including PBS NewsHour. Their research interests center on the relationship between scientific authority and questions of epistemic and probabilistic certainty. Their doctoral research focused on media circulation and socialization into the global community of Jehovah's Witnesses. Laura Santhanam is the Health Reporter and Coordinating Producer for Polling for the PBS NewsHour, where she has also worked as the Data Producer. Santhanam uses narrative and numbers to tell stories. Her work at the NewsHour merged her career as a newspaper reporter at the Chattanooga Times Free Press and the Arizona Republic with her work as a media analyst at Pew Research Center. She previously worked as a senior climate researcher at Media Matters for America, where she wrote blogs that examined climate change and managed data-driven projects on the media's coverage of issues related to energy and the environment.

His research interests include scleroderma, SLE, and the use of P32 radioactive synovectomy in refractory inflammatory monoarthritis. Dr. Lakshminarayanan serves on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) subcommittee for medical student and resident education, and ACR New England OSCE program development for rheumatology fellows. Wellness shouldn't be an online course you take or a box you tick off. Wellness is something that needs to be pursued personally. Residents have so much work to do and overwhelm is a constant threat. Today, Dr. Santhanam Lakshminarayanan tells us that one way to promote wellness is to de-stress trainee's clinical environments. Overwhelming trainees takes away their joy of medicine and when that goes, stress goes up and wellness becomes a real issue. Dr. Lakshminarayanan reminds us to keep our antenna up for our colleagues and ask them how they're doing. While you don't want to invade anyone's privacy, you also don't want to build walls so your colleagues can't communicate with you. Be open and let them know you're available. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. When you choose a mentor, choose someone who is invested in you and wants to see you succeed. 2. When a patient walks in for a follow-up, you shouldn't have to check the charts to find out how they are. Be observant during their first visit to help you remember the patient. 3. Patient advocacy is fundamental to being a physician. As a resident, if you notice the attending not addressing a symptom the patient told you about, speak up. Don't be intimidated by the attending's time constraints. 4. Wellness needs to be pursued more personally and be put in the perspective of the person and their environment. Also, when you're working as a team, “keep your antenna up” for your colleagues' wellness.
