On the show today, I'm winding the clock back a couple of years to when I sat down with Dr Katie Cunningham to talk about joy.  Dr Katie Cunningham is an Associate Professor of Literacy and English Education at Manhattanville College and the author of "Start With Joy: Designing Literacy Learning for Student Happiness". In her book, Katie describes 7 pillars at the heart of joyful literacy experiences - connection, choice, challenge, play, story, discovery and movement. I love how each pillar transfers beautifully to athlete development, and the idea of "starting with joy" continues to have a big impact on my work. Enjoy!

Calvin Baze is an NSCA Certified Personal Trainer currently working at Snap Fitness in Long Beach. He grew up in the tiny town of Ocean Park, Washington. (Calvin and I grew up on the same street, just not at the same time.) Within the first 10 minutes of the interview it becomes obvious that Calvin is a deep-thinker who understands how important it is to consider the effects on his actions on other people and his own life. We start with a psychological analysis to detect any psychopathic tendencies, then move into his training ideologies. He lays out many of his guiding principles and we get to peek under the hood at what makes a guy like this tick. Later in the podcast we move into more personal territory and discuss our childhood memories and how they affect us in adult life. Calvin talks about his failure to express his childhood pain to anyone because he doesn't want to appear as if he is seeking sympathy. He talks about how he has used the hardships of his past to propel him into a brighter future. We also talk about being part of an often-forgotten marginalized group: poor whites. We talk about experiencing classism and prejudice because of socioeconomic status. Other topics include: Calvin's mentors and what they have taught him. Jeff's sloppy joints (hyper mobility) the powers of journaling and self-discovery. Books that can change your life. The "Canoe Method" for mind-clearing meditation. Emotional vs. Physical strength and how to have both. Calvin is an amazing young man and I cannot wait to see where he goes in life. I have no doubt that he will accomplish every one of his goals. Settle-in and get comfortable because Calvin Baze is about to teach you the tricks of building strength throughout your life and these are lessons that you don't want to miss. In nearly 1,000 interviews, I thought I had covered every area in life that has been transformed by technology. But I was wrong. As I found myself looking for ideas for a giveaway and to celebrate the upcoming milestone on the show, I came across Katie Cunningham and how she is disrupting party planning with technology. LYFETYMES, is an all-in-one celebration platform on a mission to revolutionize party planning with innovation and technology. The founder is even exploring ways to bring machine learning and artificial intelligence into the mix too. In a nutshell, LYFETYMES is an innovative one-stop celebration platform, and the marketplace is transforming the party planning process for celebrations. LYFETYMES is an All-In-One Free Party Planner, an innovative end-to-end digital marketplace that helps connect all the steps in planning a celebration in one convenient place from ideation to memories. “There is not an end-to-end solution, outside of weddings, that’s focused on the millions of other milestones in life. People spend a lot of time and money to make these moments memorable, and LYFETYMES wants to help enable people to celebrate easier and also build a platform to connect the Market Network with Communities” said Founder, Katie Cunningham. “We are focused on building the best comprehensive tools and will continue to innovate the experience with Video, Virtual, Visualization, ML & AI. Our goal is to not to be ‘one and done,” but the trusted go-to place from a Pregnancy Announcement to Planning a Life Celebration of The possibilities are endless, and we are excited to be part of families across the world.” I invited Katie Cunningham onto my daily tech podcast to find out more and how she is using technology to improve how we party.
