Come along with me down the rabbit hole, as I explore the capabilities of new technologies, such as: Lensa, the A.I. portrait app, OpenAI's GPT3, and artificial Christmas trees from big box retailers. Does creating "art" require sentience from the artist? If a computer can create beauty beyond human capabilities, but has no concept of what that even means, does it still hold the same creative value? If a flawless artistic masterpiece is painted by A.I., is it the creative equivalent of a plastic Christmas tree? Can we even call it art? Is A.I. art hollow like a dead log? Does it inspire and bring life or does it lack the critical zest of a human touch? Are we doomed to a future filled with new pictures, but lacking true art? Will A.I. improve until it rivals the scriptures and eventually even has heart?Humans are masterful creators; almost god-like in our ability to bring something from the world of thought into the world of 3D reality. We are made in God's own image. Creation is what we do, and until now, no other animal species in the history of this planet has done it better. But if we handover our creative tasks to A.I. are we destined to be a species of uncultured swine doomed to walk this Earth void of purpose beyond our roles as valued consumers. Should we be purists when it comes to culture and traditions so that we aren't at-risk of losing them to the passage of time?If we allow technology to dilute our culture with fake art and fake Christmas trees, what's next? Will we lose the very essence of what it means to be human? Will we still advance as a species if we try to outsource the powers of invention? Old friend Brian Marteeny stopped by the studio with every intention of having a light and topical conversation. He probably expected to talk about politics, the weather, traffic, and The Bachelor. But he forgot that this is Ramble by the River. We don't talk about politics unless we are exposing corruption at the highest level. We don't talk about the weather unless it is in reference to the impending global catastrophe. Traffic?! How about self-driving autonomous automobiles? Commercial fishermen and longtime friends Paul Blaylock and Geoff Hylton join me for a wild podcast where we discuss the many factors involved with living in the Pacific Northwest and working in the Natural Resources industry. We talk about the many obstacles facing the Pacific Salmon fisheries, explain some common misconceptions, and provide our best ideas for how to fix everything. We also clear up misconceptions about the aliens that are often called "The Grays" and their support of local salmon fisheries. As fishermen and local residents, these young men have a uniquely privileged perspective into the world of fishing and fish management. It is very interesting to hear their opinions and the ways that they can clash with the common narrative. We also talk about: Fish Hatcheries, what are they? Do they work? Calvin Baze is an NSCA Certified Personal Trainer currently working at Snap Fitness in Long Beach. He grew up in the tiny town of Ocean Park, Washington. (Calvin and I grew up on the same street, just not at the same time.) Within the first 10 minutes of the interview it becomes obvious that Calvin is a deep-thinker who understands how important it is to consider the effects on his actions on other people and his own life. We start with a psychological analysis to detect any psychopathic tendencies, then move into his training ideologies. He lays out many of his guiding principles and we get to peek under the hood at what makes a guy like this tick. Later in the podcast we move into more personal territory and discuss our childhood memories and how they affect us in adult life. Calvin talks about his failure to express his childhood pain to anyone because he doesn't want to appear as if he is seeking sympathy. He talks about how he has used the hardships of his past to propel him into a brighter future. We also talk about being part of an often-forgotten marginalized group: poor whites. We talk about experiencing classism and prejudice because of socioeconomic status. Other topics include: Calvin's mentors and what they have taught him. Jeff's sloppy joints (hyper mobility) the powers of journaling and self-discovery. Books that can change your life. The "Canoe Method" for mind-clearing meditation. Emotional vs. Physical strength and how to have both. Calvin is an amazing young man and I cannot wait to see where he goes in life. I have no doubt that he will accomplish every one of his goals. Settle-in and get comfortable because Calvin Baze is about to teach you the tricks of building strength throughout your life and these are lessons that you don't want to miss. This 4th of July we celebrate independent thinking. We open with a spirited discussion with my 4 year-old daughter regarding the ethical concerns of high-velocity particle physics (Spoiler Alert: they may be trying to open a portal to another dimension). We also take an unexpected turn into some real family stuff and Amelia expresses some strong feelings about her sister Elsa. Alicia Trusty joins me for the main interview and we discuss the many aspects of spiritual and emotional health. Alicia has trained in various aspects of energy work and intends to continue to delve deeper into alternative healing modalities. You'll hear about her life and family, some of her troubled past, and how she found her way to working with an amazing mentor to learn how to access hidden parts of her own psyche. Some topics you will hear: What is "Codependency" and how does it happen? Is it cultural appropriation for a white person to engage in ancient cultural practices of native peoples? How much of the new age stuff is just bullsh*t? How does childhood trauma effect subsequent development? Is mindfulness everything that it is cracked up to be? How to heal the wounds that you forgot you had. How to forgive the people that hurt you. Was Jesus Christ mentally ill? This is a very fun podcast with a ton of heart. We cover so many topics and touch on many stories that involve the local community. If you are interested in improving your relationship to the Earth, the people around you, and yourself, you are going to love this podcast! Local artist and longtime friend Madeline Pointer joins me for an enlightened discussion about the state of the world, the future of humanity and why it is so easy to fall in love a good salad. I explain my findings regarding Elon Musk's plan for global domination, Madeline talks about the wild foraged ingredients you can find in local PNW cuisine. We bond over our common dopamine regulation deficiencies (ADHD). And we recount some of our finest memories from Ilwaco High School. Topics include: Is Elon Musk the antichrist? What is the Mandela Effect and is it proof that we live in a simulation? The surprising history of drugs like MDMA and Psilocybin. Technologies that will define our future. I really enjoyed making this episode. Madeline was a fantastic guest and I couldn't be more grateful for her candor, her humor, and most of all, her patience (it took me a long time to finish it). Geoff Hylton joins me for this episode as we discuss drug addiction and the mechanisms that are involved, followed by a personal talk regarding addiction in our own lives and how it has played a role. We also cover Geoff's dating life, strange cultural practices of the Pacific Northwest, industry secrets behind "imitation crab", "wild-like fish" and other seafood conspiracies, sugar: the other white drug; the surprising benefits of prayer, and some of the dangers facing women today. The first half of this episode is more technical than the usual free episodes and we go deep into the processes that underly our biological and psychological functioning. You will hear some technical jargon, but it has plenty of comedic breaks and very genuine personal moments that make the science seem very palatable. This is a very personal episode and I like how it turned out. I hope you enjoy it. If you do, please share it with a friend. The best way to help the show is to talk about it. Mooch Smith (current Athletic Director at Naselle School District) joins me to re-open old wounds and finally begin to heal after years of ignoring the pain. We start by recalling what was likely the first time we met; facing-off in what came to be remembered as a controversial match of pee-wee football. We move-on to discuss the Naselle Youth Camp's impending closure and we get the inside scoop from Mooch. We cover topics ranging from personal to political. At times it gets pretty intense but we always maintain humor and open-mindedness throughout. Along the way you might hear: what inspired Mooch to become an educator, his philosophies for coaching and for managing coaches, why community matters, what its like to raise kids in your hometown, and a bunch of stories from back in the day. You'll also get in-depth coverage of news and current events such as: Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter, the failed Red Bull stunt that ended with a plane crash, and the latest legal issues for Donald Trump. In this episode Chris Hill tells us what it is like to work for one of the top oil-spill response companies in the country. You will get a peak behind the scenes into an exciting industry and you will learn once-and-for-all that Chris and his colleagues are definitely not firemen. On this first day of April, Chris Hill joins me as we recount our greatest victories and our most humbling defeats. We dive deep into the intricate social lattice-work that underlies relationships in this small rural community and we make sure to include all of the juicy details. In other words, we gossip a little bit. Some topics include: Chris stepping up and becoming a real man at age 11, Chris working on a farm for pennies and six-pack abs, Chris coaching me (Jeff) in high school football and assuming based on our interactions, that I am of low-intelligence, and more! We hear about Chris's family, his coaching philosophies, and he tells us which players over the years were his greatest honor to coach and which ones were the greatest disappointments. His answers might surprise you... In case you are worried, this is not the final episode. That was a simple April Fool's day prank and I hope I got you. Come back next week for part two! ................................................. Music: Golden Crates, Dusty Decks. Old Grump, Smartface. Still Fly, Revel Day. On this episode, Dr. Rich Blundell; art patron, recovering academic, and founder of oika.com joins me from literally the opposite end of the continent and we discussed the plight of humanity, the gift of consciousness, and how art can change the world. Dr. Blundell is well-spoken, educated and seems to have spent a lot of time constructing his unique set of beliefs. He attempts to bridge the gap between science and mysticism by bringing public awareness to ecological intelligence and explaining what it means and how we are all a part of it. Some of the topics we covered include: the limitations of modern science, phenomenology and the power of the lived experience, and why we should all start challenging our entrenched narratives and seeking novel ways of being. The bottom line that I took away from this one: revel in life and appreciate the wild ride. Thanks for listening. Casey Venus joins Jeff to talk about his childhood, his marriage, and his professional journey. They cover a handful of topics related to their local area, including wild mushroom foraging, local cuisine, and the local nightlife. We hear from the saga of Casey's romantic life including the story of his first orgasm, which might surprise you. Also, I believe we got his second orgasm in there too. And of course Jeff chimes in with his own sexual anecdotes in a manner that would be so inappropriate under any normal circumstances that he had to create his own show. Additional topics include: the career of Billy Zane, repressed memories, Christian-rock music, podcasting, Chuck Barry vs Chuck Barris, Joe Rogan's use of the N-word, and the formation of a brand new political party called the Gun-toting Liberals party (GTL). Jeff's lovely daughters join him for the intro to reiterate that this episode is for adults only. The content is graphic in nature and while hilarious, may not be suitable for younger listeners. One of Mother Nature's favorite sons, local outdoorsman Seth Flemetis joins me to talk about living in rural Washington, working in natural resources, and being a steward of the land. Seth grew up in the Willapa Valley and now he is working to protect it from invasive species. This conversation goes deep into life in coastal/rural Washington and what it means to thrive out here. We talk about hunting, fishing, invasive species management, and we go deep into Seth's wild hobbies: dirt bikes, building and jumping custom trucks, and butchering meat on weekends. We even meander into family relationships and you get to hear about Seth's history of family turmoil and the lessons that Seth has learned from his brother, who suffered brain-damage following en epileptic seizure. We cover a lot of ground, talk about some deep personal stuff, and have plenty of laughs. This episode is about living in the moment and finding joy in your life, even when disaster strikes. Seth broke both arms, both legs, both collar bones, four ribs, and his neck and back twice each, but still has a great attitude and is excited to keep living life to the fullest. This podcast was a pleasure to make and I hope you enjoy it. This is National Invasive Species Awareness Week. Former frontman of the Band Bag of Grass, David Casper is now a construction worker living in the Pacific Northwest. David drops by the crabshed to talk with me about our shared experiences in school, working in dangerous environments, and the possibility of undiagnosed cognitive and psychiatric issues. We go into the nuts and bolts of working in the construction field, with an emphasis on roofing, a job both of us have done. We also talk about David's struggles in school, his possible dyslexia, the back injury that left him stuck in a brace and unable to compete in the sports that he loved. We also get to hear about the first time David tried Marijuana, and that story has a surprising character. If you like a good old-fashioned hang, this is the podcast for you. We had no main agenda, but we somehow kept hitting one interesting topic after another and the two hours flew by. Thanks to David for being such a great guest. Enjoy the show! Topics: · David sees his boss fall 14 ft from a roof, David is almost impaled by aluminum spears, David's promising high school sports career ended early due to a severe spinal injury, David had a back brace in high school, David starts smoking weed and forms a musical group to compete in Battle of the Bands, David's music makes some enemies... This is a special episode. Today we celebrate Valentine's Day with an intimate evening with the Nesbitts. Melissa Nesbitt makes her much-anticipated return to Ramble by the River, and she brought with her a Valentine's Day couples quiz, an old Highschool yearbook, and a bottle of wine. Jeff and Melissa take their time going through the couple's quiz and discussing the answers. The audience will enjoy a peek behind the curtain as Jeff is able to let down his guard and truly have a fun and relaxing time as the host. They have a lot of laughs, talk about a ton of important issues in the world today, and only brag about their kids a little bit. There is a lot of local shout outs in this episode, so if you hear us talk about you, say hi back! Thank you to my wife Melissa, not only for being the guest this week, but for supporting me while I make this podcast week-after-week. In fact, as I type this, she is inside wrangling kids and keep everything in order, as she does. Hannah bolden is a runner, a teacher, and a decorated barrel racer. She stops by the crabshed and we talk about local gossip, Hannah's upcoming wedding to Colten Chalker (friend of the show), we debate the merits of video games, and we hear about what can happen after getting 23andme.com results. This is a fun podcast with a lot of laughs, despite a rough start (One of our teachers was arrested the night before we recorded this, so that came up right away and it was not in the episode plan. Once we got that out of the way, the tone brightened up). You'll enjoy discussions like these: -Hannah gets engaged to Colten Chalker. -Hannah discusses the possibility of in vitro fertilization -Jeff discusses crime statistics by gender - Hannah brings human shit into a crowded van -Do you tell your spouse when you poop your pants? -Hannah's mom conducts a stealth paternity-test. -and much, much more... Cooper Belisle makes his second appearance and it is even better than the first. Jeff and Cooper discuss technology, health, and extreme recreational activities in typical Ramble by the River fashion, interspersed with short personal anecdotes from both of the guys. They cover technology topics such as vaccines, the Metaverse, Neuralink, crypto, NFTs, VR, AR, and dystopian scenarios. And they hit sports with skiing, snowboarding, skydiving, hang-gliding, and wingsuit cliff-diving. Towards the end of the episode Cooper drops a bomb and announces that he is pursuing a new career in a field that is highly controversial! And we discuss some of the challenges that await him there. Cooper's life is driven by a core philosophy that prioritizes positivity and personal enrichment, and it has led him to travel the globe in search of adventure and enlightenment. Whether he is facing down cancer treatments or jumping out of an airplane, this guy greets each day with composure and class. It was truly an honor to share the studio with him and I hope you enjoy the show! ________________________________________________ Topics/Keywords: Vaccine reactions; vasectomy; medicine; nazi research; Volkswagen; Hitler; Toyota; Tesla; stock market; crypto; gaming; esports; NFTs; non-fungible tokens; Play-to-earn; P2E; Microsoft; Epic Games; Activision-Blizzard; corporate bailouts; 2008 economic crash; parenting; adoption; babies; Oculus; Facebook; Beat Saber; Sony PlayStation VR; metaverse; haptic suits; haptic gloves; virtual reality; U2; Apple Computers; Augmented Reality; AR; machine learning; neural net; artificial intelligence; animal intelligence; smart homes; generative art; Google; Contrastive NFT; Neuralink; implantable computers; Human computer interface; skiing; snowboarding; snow sports; Snow Patrol; sports injuries; pain medication; airboats; dirt bikes; sky-diving; Bobby Coda; Bono; Spotify; Mark Zuckerberg; wearable tech; Tesla; Jeff Bezos; Elon Musk; pig heart transplant; The Cable Guy; Jim Carrey; law enforcement; police officer training; Joe Rogan; censorship; Trump; losing pets; good grief; Portals metaverse; real-estate market; Joe Rogan Experience; Dr. Robert Malone; pets; grief; NFT Giveaway. In the Season 2 premiere, Jeff welcomes us back with news, show updates, and a quick chat with a surprise guest from Season 1. The main event of this episode is an interview with Florencia Moncérat Galvan (Nunez), known by many as Flo Galvan, and by others as Moncé. As a local of the Long Beach Peninsula, Moncé tells us about her experience growing up as a person of Hispanic heritage in a small rural town. We'll hear stories from old times, like when she went mushroom picking with the gang in Ocean Park, and we'll get the inside scoop on some of her more difficult memories from the peninsula, like the conflict that eventually ran her out of town. This podcast covers a lot of ground and the tone hovers somewhere in the middle between "discussions of popular TV shows" and "I found out I'm dying later". We do go down some dark roads like: suicide, bad relationships, deportations, broken families, and human sacrifice, but the heavier content is balanced out with topics like our bad tattoos, working in the medical cannabis trade, and whether or not it is nice to smoke a little crack. As always, we hit many wacky topics along the way and had plenty of laughs too. Jeff's daughter (3 year-old) Amelia even pops-in to give a simple run-down on the common practice of human sacrifice among the native cultures of Central America. It's a hoot! Also... I was shocked and delighted to hear some BIG NEWS that Moncé announced live on the show. (I would say more about that, but I don't want to spoil the surprise so I will talk about that on a future episode). This recording was the first time I had seen Moncé for a decade and I didn't fully know who I would get. I had no idea how much she had gone through over those years and I was really impressed by the strong and vibrant human being that she has grown to be. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting down with her and hearing about her journey through life and I think you will enjoy it too. I am thrilled to be back for Season 2 and I can't wait to share all of the wonderful things we have in store. Thank you for listening. #keepramblin ................................................................................................................ In the Season 1 finale, Alexandra Mack (aka Moses) joins Jeff to discuss life, love, and listening to Ramble by the River. They swap stories from growing up on the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum, Alex provides some interesting facts about the history of kidney health in the United States, they both give recipes to some delicious Mexican dishes, and they spend a significant amount of time discussing what they love and what drives them crazy in relationships. Along the way we venture into celebrity crushes, gardening, Oktoberfest, jealousy, weird foods, mental health, and old regrets (specifically, NOT eating a scorpion when offered). Alex is a clinically-certified hemodialysis technician, an expert bar-tender/mixologist, and an avid listener of this podcast. Since day one, she has been a steady focus-group of one, providing valuable insights and critiques that have helped the show to take shape. I am very grateful to her for her input on a weekly basis and it was great to finally get her opinions on the record. The general tone of this episode is happy, reflective, and fun and I hope that spreads to you listeners as you hear it. If you have been with us since the beginning, you cannot miss this season wrap-up, and if you are just getting started with Ramble, I hope you will be back next season.
