Where we sit down with Kim Brophey for an edifying discussion about what we should consider when talking about the welfare, well-being, and best interests of the animals we work with and love. "...and it's interesting, because if we look at the incredible rise in behavior problems, and the severity, the increased and severity of behavior problems, it goes in tandem with the increased level of captivity that has been imposed upon pet dogs. And that shouldn't be surprising if we're looking at it through the lens of applied ethology." In this episode, Britteny is back to talk about canine ethology and how DogSpeak uses the LEGS model when working with behavior. Kim Brophey, a prominent figure in the study of animal behavior, has innovatively integrated an ethological approach into applied behavior analysis. This is a really special episode for me, because today we are celebrating 6 months of the Mystic Dog Mama podcast, and 6 months of growing this beautiful community together! In this special episode, I have created a compilation. If you've been with me for a while, you'll know that I ask all of my guests what dogs have taught them about what it means to be human. The answers are so profound and beautiful, and they offer a real opportunity to reflect on who we are as individuals, and who we aspire to be. I've brought all of my guests' answers to this particular question together in this episode, so you can hear them again in one timeline. I hope you enjoy hearing the breadth and depth of their responses. I've listed everyone in the time stamps below, so you can see the speaking order. When I first decided to create the podcast, I set the intention that this would be a safe space to bring people together to talk about what nourishment for our dogs, ourselves, and the planet could look like. But, I never imagined that this little corner of the internet could create such a sense of home for myself, and for those of you joining me in this journey. We live in a strange time-space continuum that can be so divisive, and so alienating. It's such a testament to the canine spirit that a little 10lb chihuahua walked into my life, and became the catalyst for creating such a beautiful community. I am grateful to each and every one of my guests, and each and every one of you listening. This means the world to me to have you and your pups walking the spiritual path alongside me and Lucky. A quick note that this episode was sponsored by Aspirationery, which, in full transparency, is another project of mine where we create books, notebooks, and stationery to help you become all you aspire to be. In this episode, Jo & Vicky are joined by Kim Brophey, they will be talking all things L.E.G.S, but not in the way you may expect. She shares her journey from running her behaviour centre to launching her world-renowned L.E.G.S course, teaching, consulting and presenting. Kim has recently launched a new online education centre to reintroduce Applied Ethology to the industry. She talks about dealing with imposter syndrome, online bullying, being at the helm of two huge businesses and getting back to enjoying a more balanced life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Working in the dog behaviour field is emotionally as well as physically demanding. You have to recognise this and create enough space to top yourself up. Dog behaviourists need support to help them with mental health. Tribalism is currently destroying the dog industry. It is in shambles. We need to find a middle way. We must stop judging each other so harshly. Dog training is a mix of task and care. Currently, we are often too focused on the task. Think about the human half of the relationship. Whatever a client brings to you is just the tip of the iceberg. Invest in your client and their dog as a family unit and be prepared to work with them across the long term. How you treat dogs impacts how you treat humans. If you Alpha Roll dogs, the chances are you are doing something similar to people too. Market to the right customers for you and systemise everything. The industry still values credentials over merit to the point where it has become disruptive. We are all still learning. BEST MOMENTS ‘The model is burnout, bleed yourself dry. It's a self-destroying martyrdom kind of profession.' ‘We are making more of an impact one human being at a time … they are then going to start treating their other humans in their lifestyle differently .' ‘Forget the ego system, join the ecosystem.' Yep! Your dog has a purpose, too! Today is a really juicy episode, and if you love to have those big-picture conversations, as well as get into some practical suggestions of how you can create change for you and your dog today, then you're going to love this chat I had with dog trainer, dog behaviorist, and ethologist, Kim Brophey! You may know Kim from her TedX talk on why framing our dogs as “pets” has been to their detriment, or maybe you have come across her applied ethology-based L.E.G.S course, which involves taking a step beyond training to also look at a dog's behaviour in relation to its environment, its genetics, and its individual self. Kim aims to build bridges and invite others to contribute to a new conversation about dogs- one that challenges us to redefine how we perceive, talk about, and treat our canine companions as a society. Whether you're familiar with her work or not, I know you're going to get so many nuggets out of this conversation, so definitely message me on Instagram @mysticdogmama with your “aha” moments! I'd love to hear them! Kim and I go deep into how behaviour issues don't exist in the wild, and how our dogs' behaviours are telling us about how we may or may not be meeting their needs, and what we can do about that. We also talk about how our dogs are the new “canary in the coal mine,” showing us where we are going wrong - not only in relation to our dogs' health and wellbeing, but to our own, and the planet's, and how shifting our perspective from a focus on training our dogs for obedience, instead to creating a state of welfare for them, can have life-changing results -again, for our dogs, but also for ourselves. THIS is the conversation we need to be having alongside doing all the things to help our dogs better live in and cope with the world we have put them in. I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did! In this episode of the Pooch Parenting Podcast, I'm discuss a wonderful shift that's taking place in the dog training and behavior industry. It's called Family Dog Mediation and I learned about it from Kim Brophey, an applied ethologist and one of my colleagues. Her revolutionary LEGS model introduces us to the basic foundational system of elements that direct the behavior of every single animal on earth (including us, of course) and explains what it means for our family dogs. This episode dives into this approach of working with families living with kids and dogs at the same time, and offers some perspective on the contributing factors to the behavior and feelings of each member of the household, dog included. Topics in this episode include:factors that impact behavior of parents, kids, and dogshow normal it is for parents to be overwhelmed raising kids and dogs togetherwhether or not training is the best way to address dog behavior challengesthe LEGS model for behavior: learning, environment, genetics and selfFamily Dog Mediation and how it helps us to manage our expectations of our dogsIf you are a dog professional and want to take Kim's amazing Family Dog Mediation Professional Course, you can find it here.If you are a family with a dog and want to learn more about dogs and dog behavior, Kim has a special course for you too called The Dog's Truth.Realistic Expectations for Parents with Kids and DogsYou love your dog. Of course you do. But if you're being honest, sometimes they can be difficult to live with. Perhaps they bark too much, are too clingy, growl at your toddler or hate being separated from all of their family members, even for a few minutes. And let's face it – the stakes are high when you are raising kids and dogs together. You can't wait until something dangerous happens before you seek help – you need support as soon as you see even a single red flag. It's easy to hope for a quick fix and to “train” the annoying behavior away. But I'll be totally honest with you (you can expect that from me), and say that sometimes training isn't all that it's cut out to be. Yes, I'm a dog trainer and I'm telling you that training isn't always the answer. Ok – so what is?Before you can resolve any of the challenging issues you might be facing with your dog, you need to understand all of the contributing factors to their behavior. But it actually goes deeper than that. We need to consider the contributing factors to YOUR behavior too! That's right - since your dog doesn't live in a bubble, it's crucial that we evaluate the whole picture, especially how you and your family members interact with the dog. And that's where my specialized role as a Licensed Family Dog Mediator comes in.Want some support to help you navigate your family and dog dynamics? I've got you.Thank you for listening! When they don't act the way you think they should, your automatic response may be to say, “we need training”. But will training give you the results you're looking for? Maybe not. If you're on social media, or just have an interest in dog training and behavior in general, you might have seen the controversy surrounding a research article that was published around the end of April, so just a couple months before the release of this podcast episode. The paper is titled "Ancestry Inclusive Dog Genomics Challenges Popular Breed Stereotypes". It's a bit of a mouthful, but the short summary of controversy is that many in the mainstream media or on social media were saying that "breed totally matters, while others were staying, see, breed doesn't matter at all." So the first thing that came to my mind was, let's get one of the authors of the paper onto the podcast. And the next thing that came to my mind was, let's get Kim Brophey to be my guest host on this episode, as she is someone that has talked so much about breed and behavior tendencies in her past appearances as a guest on this show. And so I brought Jessica Hekman, who is one of the authors and Kim Brophey together, and and let's just say, these two brilliant minds do not disappoint in this episode, as we take a deep dive into not only dispelling some of the misunderstandings from the research, but also into genetics and aggression in general. For most of history, humans have regarded dogs as animals with specific jobs. But in recent history, these animals have become pets only. Is that to blame for many of the “problems” and “challenges” we face with our dogs? In this episode, Kim Brophey will help us make sense of why the viewing of our dogs as pets may actually be the root of many “problem behaviors”. And of course, Kim will break down what you can do today to help your pup be more successful in a human-centric world! First, let's define applied ethology

Description: Kim joins me to talk about ethological contributions to behavior problems in our pet dogs, and how her L.E.G.S. system can help us look at the bigger picture when working on these issues.
In this episode, I chat with Kim Brophey about why we need to rethink our relationship with our dogs and move away from thinking of our dogs as pets and of ourselves as ‘dog owners' but more like dog parents or carers. We also chat about why it's so important that we are more aware of how our emotions get in the way of our dogs' ability to learn and live happy lives. Kim is an applied ethologist and professional Family Dog Mediator working to solve problems between people and dogs with modern science. If you're wondering what an ethologist is, well they're scientists who study the behaviour of animals in their natural environment. Kim is a certified dog behaviour consultant and a certified dog trainer. She's also an author of the must read book, Meet your Dog. Kim is truly breaking the mould in the pet dog industry in order to facilitate a long overdue paradigm shift in our relationships with our dogs.Links we love
