    The Importance of Trust

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2026 41:11

For any dog business, trust is the most important currency - and every client interaction either tops up or drains your clients' “trust account.” Yet, building trust is becoming more difficult. Consumers are increasingly suspicious of what they see. So, dog pros need to ask: “How do I show up as genuine in a world where the first thing people ask is - is this real or AI? In this episode, Jo & Vicky break down what trust actually looks like in a dog training business today. They cover using AI without losing your voice, why using your clients' real words matter more than polished trainer speak, and how sharing the small, real, behind-the-scenes moments quietly make it easier for the right people to say yes to what you offer. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money, and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS AI can be useful, but obviously AI-written content feels inauthentic and makes subconscious withdrawals from your audience's trust account, especially if it doesn't sound like you. AI works best as a thinking partner that helps you articulate ideas when you're stuck, not as a shortcut that replaces your own brain and voice. Get out of the habit of writing to impress other dog trainers. Your audience is real-life dog owners that need help. Make content that speaks directly to them and use the exact language they use. Unintelligible jargon kills trust. Big brands can lean on their logo; solo dog pros can't. Showing your face, name, story, and even mundane life moments e.g. laundry on the bed behind you is what lets people feel safe choosing you. It´s not enough to share your founder story and leave it at that. Your story is a thread that people follow, so keep sharing as you progress or things change. Clients are growing sick of being given some basic instruction then being left to get on with things. They want real human support – more connection and guidance. Showing what goes on in your business behind the scenes builds trust. People get to see how much effort you put into looking after them and their dogs. Being your true self helps the right clients to opt in. BEST MOMENTS “I'd say it probably takes longer, in some instances, to use AI to write stuff.” “It's not going to resonate if it's not what your people would be saying.” “It's not that nobody's spending they're just adding a few more steps into their spending process.” “If it comes from the heart, it will come across in whatever format you choose.” “You can't expect somebody to hand over some cash if there's no element of trust there.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. D.I.S.C For Dog Trainers - How Personality Types Impacts Your Sales, Services and Client Results

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2026 53:18

Many dog trainers obsess over methods, protocols and doing things “the right way” -  which 99% of the time means their way! They tend to forget clients learn in a variety of ways - if you don't adapt, they stall and disappear from your classes. In this episode, Jo & Vicky share a simple personality framework (D.I.S.C) that explains why some dog owners want quick, direct instructions while others need time, detail, and reassurance, then explain how to tweak your style to fit their different personalities.  They also cover how to use that framework to improve your own performance, business partnerships, make more sales, hire the right people, and inspire them to work at their best. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money, and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS To get better client results, you must match how you teach and support to how different personalities actually learn, decide and act. If you build offers, sales pages and processes that only work for your own personality type, you´ll miss out. You need simple options that work for all four personality types. Most “difficult” clients, team members or business partners aren't difficult. Often, it is just that their default style e.g. task vs people, fast vs slow is clashing with your go to approach.  Identifying and understanding your own personality type enables you to deliberately “dial up” or “dial down” your traits to achieve better results. The strongest teams and partnerships are a combination of people with different personality profiles. It covers all of the bases but only works if each member of the team is flexible enough to adapt, when necessary. Understanding personality types also helps with the sales process. It enables you to tweak your message and the point at which you pitch your offer to work for the person you are talking to. BEST MOMENTS “I had to learn … I have to adapt if we're going to make this beneficial for everyone, having this awareness in how you coach as well.” “I need to meet them where they are at.” “Learning all of this stuff, it's given me the ability to step back and go, it's not you. It's a trait that you have that's clashing with mine.” “Ask the question - what do you need from me to make that a success?” EPISODE RESOURCES The Impact Your Personality Profile Has on Your Business with Andy Nisevic   https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-impact-your-personality-profile-has-on-your/id1727170978?i=1000668232509 SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. From Phone‑Shy to Fully Booked: Beat Call Anxiety to Unlock High-Ticket Dog Training Sales

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2026 46:23

Dog trainers love the idea of offers that sell themselves from a post, a page, or a button. No calls. No awkward conversations. Just checkout links. That works well for low ticket items – but when you want to sell higher-ticket services, that faceless model quietly caps your income. Your fear of picking up the phone keeps the most profitable clients at arm's length. If you want to break free of that fear, you only need to listen in, get a little brave and use our techniques to take the right action. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS If your current low-contact model isn't giving you the income or enquiries you want, speaking to people and adding human touchpoints is what you need. Low-ticket items are easier to sell facelessly online, while high-ticket sales almost always require you to have a real conversation with someone. Speaking to people via phone calls and in-person makes it easier for you and your would-be client to identify the problem properly and assess whether you are a good fit for each other. Most people struggle with making phone calls, we are no longer used to doing it and prefer speaking online. “No time,” “they're probably busy,” or “I need all the info first” are often stories masking fear, discomfort, or imposter syndrome. Having a clear framework in mind before making the call makes things much easier. A few opening sentences, what to ask and how to close the conversation reduces anxiety and makes sales calls more effective and less awkward. Practice is what removes fear. Like dog-training mastery of phone conversations comes from repetition.  Accept that first few calls will be a bit clunky, do it anyway, don´t beat yourself up about it, take a few deep breaths and make your next call. Do this until you get good at it. Being fully yourself matters. That includes how you talk, swear and joke. Being your true self filters out the wrong people and attracts clients who genuinely fit you and your way of working. BEST MOMENTS "It's the human-to-human connection that's missing."  "If you are thinking, I'm busy enough. However, I'm not earning as much as I would like, and or maybe I'm not getting enough inquiries in or earning enough, or then this is where speaking to people is going to massively set you apart."   "This works for introverts too." "If you feel confident in a starting point, an end point, and what you do in between, then the rest kind of just flows and comes more easily." "To create the habit - do the thing." https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. How to Get Past Your Fear of Selling High-Ticket Dog Training

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2026 41:51

DESCRIPTION Most dog trainers struggle with selling high-ticket services - and that's completely normal.  But the real issue usually isn't your offer or your clients. It's your relationship with money.  In this episode, we dig into where that reluctance really comes from: childhood conditioning like “money doesn't grow on trees,” family and friends projecting their fears onto you, and why you feel the urge to justify, discount, or dodge the money conversation altogether.  We unpack how your discomfort around money can quietly put clients off - and how to start building a healthier, more confident money mindset so you can finally charge what you're worth. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money, and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS Reluctance to sell high-ticket service is normal - most dog trainers struggle to do it. Usually, your reluctance is not about your not having confidence in the product you are offering and its value. For most people it is their money mindset coupled with imposter syndrome and what people will think if you charge a high-ticket price that stops them from selling at a price point that makes them truly profitable. Most of your money mindset comes from your upbringing – parents turning lights off, “money doesn't grow on trees,” and being “careful with money” all shape what your perception of what people will think is a “reasonable” price.  You project your own money beliefs onto clients - you think “no one will pay that,” while the same people are happily spending £40 on a light lunch, £200 on a private ski lesson and enjoying other expensive treats. Avoiding or apologising for the price keeps you stuck – hiding prices in emails, discounting when someone hesitates, or trying to “convince” people leaves you resentful and underpaid.  Doing the uncomfortable inner work changes everything – when you unpick your layers around money, self-worth, and rejection, you stop taking “no” personally and finally feel okay charging for the real value you deliver.  BEST MOMENTS “The hard part is actually breaking through the barriers in your brain to think that someone's actually going to part with the cash.” “It's 's not an industry problem. It's not a what you're offering problem; it's a money mindset problem .” “Somebody will always question a price point, and it's how you respond to that that matters.” “We're human, and we come with baggage, and we come with thoughts and feelings that are different and are blockers.” “It's understanding the market.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. How To Be The “Local Dog Training Expert” Without Sounding Egotistical

DESCRIPTION Owning your expertise can feel a bit… egotistical, right? We all tend to feel we are “showing off” if we dare to call ourselves an expert.  But being seen as the expert by clients is important. It isn't about bragging rights or badges  - it's about clearly showing people you've got the knowledge and skills to help them and their dogs.  In this episode, we reveal how to be seen as the local expert, how to keep your message simple and consistent, what the 7–11–4 rule means for your marketing, and why your gut feeling about your business model and future plans matters more to your clients than any certificate or qualification. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money, and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS Owning your expertise and calling yourself an expert can feel egotistical. As a result, many brilliant trainers stay quiet and as a result are invisible to the people who need them.  Qualifications and badges don't sell  you. Most people do not even know what the letters mean - clients care that you understand them and their dog and get results.  You only need to be the clear, confident go‑to expert in your local area. You are not in competition with the big industry names.  One clever post or random content doesn´t cut it. When you show up in the same way, as yourself, people trust and hire you.  Make regularly posting on social media an integral part of your workflow. In phase one of your business journey, strong sales skills beat complex funnels and marketing tactics. Start simple. Use sales calls to embody expertise: truly listen and respond to what is actually said and ask smart questions instead of listing your credentials.  Calling yourself a “dog trainer” matches how people actually search and talk. Even if you see yourself as a behaviourist or coach, you still need to use “dog trainer” so you can be found by people who need your expertise. BEST MOMENTS "People have this aversion to showing off that they're an expert or sharing to the world that they're an expert."  "Expert is showing somebody that you've got the knowledge, the skills to be able to do the thing that you do best, which in this case would be dog training."  "It's prospective buyers connecting with you, building that trust, knowing that you are the right person for them, and you've got the expertise." “The local area is the place to target that knowledge and expertise. If  you're in the right local Facebook groups, for example, then you're reaching those local people.” “Adding this (social media posting) into your workflow helps prospective buyers connect with you .” https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. Why Dog Training Businesses Must Change in 2026

DESCRIPTION Dog trainers are struggling – for many it is because they have drifted into running a business that hasn´t kept pace with how the market has changed. In this episode, Jo & Vicky talk directly to force-free trainers who are struggling to fill classes and feel pressured to drop their prices while quietly sensing “something has shifted” in the industry but are not quite sure how. They reveal what's actually changed, why joining the race to the bottom won't work, and how to build bespoke, high-value programmes that are genuinely useful for modern, time-poor owners as well as profitable and sustainable for you. Listen in to move beyond the 90s class model and  start thinking like a future-focused, industry-aware, dog pro. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money, and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS Dog training is stuck in 1990 – trainers are still selling one‑offs, 3 pack sessions, and group classes that don't fit how people live now and do not incorporate the latest training science. The more educated the public becomes about dogs, the more they'll question why you're still selling outdated, cookie‑cutter services.  Owners want a dog that listens, settles in public, ignores distractions, and can relax under the pub table, not one that is good at fancy exercises. The question isn't “Is there demand?” it is “Do I offer a good ROI of time and money for today´s owners?” There is plenty of demand including for puppy classes. Racing to the bottom on price is a fear reaction, not a strategy.  In a world of YT and ChatGPT, ad hoc, low‑ticket sessions are easy to replace; high‑touch, outcome‑focused programmes and real human support are not. Group classes force you to deliver one plan to eight different dog–human teams - key problems go unaddressed and some owners feel unseen. Having a niche won´t limit you. Being “the scent work guy” makes you stand out. Stop mass marketing, target a specific need instead. Back yourself - design offers you love delivering. It makes it easier for clients to trust you, commit, and get results.  BEST MOMENTS “We need to change … from these archaic, old-fashioned models that have been going since the 90s. It´s 2026.” “People listening to this are getting one or two people in a puppy class, where you'd normally fill it with eight people.” “There is such a great opportunity this year, to really market yourself to the minority and start moving away from mass marketing.” “Everyone seems to be on a race to the bottom … I can't compete with £10 session.” “We really have to start connecting on that human level again.” “Be playful, be creative with your offers.” IIMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. DESCRIPTION Dog trainers constantly ask: “How do I get clients fast?” But this isn't the best question to ask. In this episode, Jo &Vicky unpack what “I need more clients fast” really means (“I need more money”), how panic pushes dog trainers into discounting, cold outreach and spammy “I've got 3 spaces left” posts, and why focusing on existing relationships, client retention and simple, repeatable lead generation campaigns is actually the fastest way to get dog training clients in now and build a more sustainable business for the long term. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS Your saying "I need clients fast” usually means that you are feeling scared about money. When you are in that mindset you are going to make bad decisions that are going to mess up your business, over the long term. Panic marketing creates “get energy” that repels clients.  Your spammy “I've only got 3 spaces left” posts and constant stream of random offers will turn people off.  People hate being constantly sold to and manipulated by buy immediately or lose out offers. Client retention is the best business model, especially for force-free trainers. Looking after existing clients and offering them the next right step always beats cold lead sales campaigns. Consistent nurturing through email, socials and community builds a pipeline so you hit panic mode less often. If you find yourself in panic mode - which happens to everyone at some point, slow down, pause and re-assess what you are doing before sending out a deep discount post.  Integrity and money are not opposites. You can be force-free, ethical and client-centred and still charge properly. BEST MOMENTS “We fuck up and still have those moments where we're like, oh shit, need to get more clients in because we need more cash. It's just normal.” “This is when bad decisions can happen when we're in this panic mode.” “If you double down on the thing that has worked really well in the past, that's always going to be a good strategy.” “The best business model you will ever, ever have is a client retention one.” “Put your prospective clients first, be customer centric, and actually the money will follow.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. DESCRIPTION Running a dog business is about so much more than training dogs - it's about working with people who are busy, overwhelmed, and often unsure of where to start. Today, Jo & Vicky are joined by clinical animal behaviourist Lisa Sinnott, who specialises in reactivity, aggression, and, crucially, helping humans change alongside their dogs.  Lisa shares how to move beyond 15-page reports, cut the jargon, and make your training plans genuinely doable for real-life clients. You'll hear how to simplify the way you communicate, use motivational interviewing to build true buy-in, and support owners in a way that fits their actual lives—not the ideal ones in your head. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money, and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS You can't change dogs without changing humans first.  Your job isn't to brain-dump everything you know; it's to give the right amount of information at the right time in the right format for that person.  The more you understand people's limits, motivations, and real lives, the more your training actually sticks.  Break behaviour change into one priority at a time and accept “good enough” progress. Co-create the plan with owners. Ask them what's realistic, check how willing and confident they feel, and shape the steps around their actual life and their dog´s needs. Clients don't fail because they don't care; they fail because the plan doesn't fit their life. Design for time-poor, overwhelmed humans, not fantasy clients. Jargon and labels can trigger shame, defensiveness, or confusion. Plain language, concrete behaviour descriptions, and good analogies build understanding and trust.  Simple tools e.g. traffic light logs, WhatsApp check-ins, and one clear “start here” box in a report makes progress visible and keeps clients motivated even on bad days. When clients feel safe, respected, and not judged, they'll tell you the truth. Honesty leads to change in both human and dog behaviour. BEST MOMENTS “Start off with the biggest priority, then, gradually snowballing and doing other things from there is the way to go.” “If change is motivated by discomfort, it doesn't stick, whereas change can be fostered by empathy and understanding and seeing things from different people's perspectives.” “It's our responsibility to meet people where they are and then bring them up to our knowledge.” “If they make you feel rubbish or defensive you won't listen well. I don´t listen well to people that make me feel like crap.” “Roll with the resistance.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.stpawstrainingacademy.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/people/St-Paws-Training-Academy https://www.tiktok.com/@stpawstraining SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness www.caninebusinessacademy.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. When you do the maths and realise you need 40+ new clients a month, you know your business model is not viable. Your capacity isn't just about "hours in the diary” – it's childcare, dogs, clubs, energy levels, and when you actually work best. Your pricing has to reflect your real life, not a fantasy schedule. The idea “clients will only come at evenings and weekends” is wrong. Jo & Vicky explain how to identify and actively attract people who can train during the day. Classes that don't fill, or super‑cheap sessions e.g. £3 drop‑ins, create a lose–lose situation. They drain your time and energy, slash what client´s think your time is worth and rarely deliver good results so you put clients off rather than tempting them to book more.  High‑ticket, 1:1 offers make it easier to hit your income goals with fewer clients. You provide far better support, protect your time and avoid burnout.  Life will keep changing - kids, health, travel, regulations, overheads – so don´t lock yourself into an inflexible model that only works for one perfect season of your life.  BEST MOMENTS “Rather than what should I charge? They ask, what do people charge? So, I can copy.” “Think to yourself, Is that realistic. How much of you does that take up? Time wise, energy wise?” “We've got to be offering something that is going to be getting people a good result.” “Sometimes life happens to you as well, and your time gets taken away. So, things have to adapt.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. Stop Chasing Followers How Pet Businesses Really Grow Online with Tori Mistik

DESCRIPTION Are you struggling to turn your loyal followers into actual paying clients, or wondering if all that time on social media is really worth it for your dog business? Today, Jo and Vicky are joined by Tori Mistik, founder of Wear Wag Repeat, canine enrichment expert, and long-time petpreneur. Tori shares how she grew a niche dog brand over 13 years, why a small but loyal audience beats viral views, and how email marketing can quietly become the most powerful part of your digital strategy. This episode is about the wisdom (or foolishness) of shifting your niche, offering low-ticket memberships vs high-ticket offers, and building genuine trust by being more you. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS A small, loyal audience that trusts you outperforms a big, distracted audience.  Consistent, story-led emails enable you to make genuine connections and sell more than any social media platform. To feed the algorithms you need to be clear e.g. on Instagram you have to actually use some captions that say “I am a dog trainer specialising in (your niche)". Being general gets you lost in the crowd, being specific gets you in front of people who want what you offer. Every pivot or niche shift needs fresh proof, stories, and reassurance. Even your most loyal followers and buyers need to be convinced all over again that your new offer or direction is for them. Viral views and follower counts are vanity metrics unless they lead to real relationships, enquiries, or sales.  For most dog businesses, it's smarter to start with a focused, high-touch, high-ticket offer, then add lower-ticket products later.  The internet is Times Square: to be seen, you need clarity, consistency, and a simple message repeated everywhere.  True enrichment – for dogs and for business – is built from small, intentional actions repeated over time, not one flashy shortcut.  BEST MOMENTS "I'll think how would I write this subject line if I was sending it to my sister Addie? How would I write this email so that it's not coming across as a sales and marketing email." "You don't necessarily need a larger audience. You really want to focus on creating a more loyal audience." "I've never been able to follow a content calendar... I latch on to those moments of momentum and schedule stuff ahead." "It's actually harder to sell anything low ticket than it is high ticket." Are You a CPD Junkie? How to Stop Hoarding Learning and Start Using It

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2025 31:39

DESCRIPTION Are you collecting courses, certificates, and dog training books like a CPD junkie? Taking course after course without any real purpose behind what you are learning? In this episode, Jo & Vicky unpack the vital role CPD (Continuous Professional Development) plays in the dog training world. They explore how easy it is to slide into learning for learning's sake, fuel imposter syndrome, and drift away from your original purpose – and how to flip CPD into something intentional and aligned with your niche, your clients and the business you actually want to run. KEY TAKEAWAYS CPD should support your strategy, not constantly rewrite it – choose learning that moves you toward the business you actually want to run.  Ask yourself why am I studying this, what am I going to do with this knowledge. Don´t do a course, then shoehorn that service into your business to justify the course. Purposeful, well-chosen CPD deepens your impact; endless courses without a plan just fuel overwhelm and self-doubt. Both formal education and firsthand experience matter – it's how you blend and apply them that grows your confidence and your business. Your niche and offers are allowed to evolve; testing, pivoting, and dropping what doesn't fit is part of building a sustainable dog business. Loving learning for its own sake is valid, as long as you're honest with yourself and don't force every new idea you pick up into your services. BEST MOMENTS “Knowledge is definitely power, but knowledge can be a curse as well .” “I am a massive CPD junkie. I f**ing love doing all of the dog knowledge courses.” “The skill is having the ability to do both - be aware of what you want your education skill level to be and knowing how you want to utilise that in your business.” “Don't overwhelm yourself by doing too much for the sake of doing it and getting FOMO around, not going to these events.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com Quiz: https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. From Pocket Money to Proper Money – Rethinking Your Dog Training Prices

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 10, 2025 41:35

DESCRIPTION Are you working flat out in your dog business but still not paying yourself what you "need" – never mind what you "want"? In this episode, Jo & Vicky dive into the messy subject of pricing your dog services. They unpack the difference between your "need number" and your "want number", how to sense-check your current prices against your goals, and why simply “charging more” won´t work if the service itself doesn't deliver a premium experience.  You'll come away with a straightforward way to assess your current pricing, your offers, and how to attract the right clients - people who want what you offer and are able to pay what you are worth. You´ll be able to build a dog business that actually supports the life you want, without your having to run yourself into the ground. KEY TAKEAWAYS Copying other people's prices or inherited packages rarely works– it's a quick fix that often keeps you undercharging for your time and expertise.  Bear in mind that a “one-hour” service rarely takes only an hour to deliver. Travel, prep, follow-up and admin all eat into your day and must be reflected in your pricing alongside overheads like running your business vehicle and rent.  Your “need number” is what you must earn each month to cover living costs. Your “want number” is the higher income that lets you fund your bigger goals and “dream life” extras.  Your "need number" combined with your "want number" will give you a clear income target and see whether your current offers and fees will realistically support your lifestyle and goals.  Doing the maths on how many clients or class places you sell each month helps you spot whether you have a lead-generation issue, a sales issue, or a pricing issue.  Premium pricing only works when the service delivers – structure, support and outcomes must create a genuine win–win for you and your clients. If it doesn´t you won´t attract and retain the type of clients, you need. Building a good reputation is critical to being able to charge what you want and keep attracting enough clients. BEST MOMENTS “It never put people off - the price. It was the value behind getting your dog walked on its own.” “Look at your numbers. Know how many inquiries you're bringing in each month. Know how many of the service you have to sell in order to hit your need number.” “Then you start to look at is it actually feasible to sell that many.” “Because it's a premium service now, whereas before, it was a scratchy service - it now warranted that higher price tag.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com Quiz: https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. Why Authenticity is Your Brand's Secret PR Weapon with Charlotte Nichols

DESCRIPTION Building a business that people trust, recognise, and seek out isn't about being perfect, it's about being authentic and doing your absolute best. This week, Jo & Vicky are joined by Charlotte Nichols the founder of dog industry centred PR agency Harvey and Hugo. Charlotte shares how using authentic PR techniques combined with your own story sets you apart and helps you to attract  clients that are a perfect fit for you and what you are trying to achieve. Tune in for honest advice on overcoming self-doubt, simple PR strategies, and why showing up as yourself is your strongest brand move. KEY TAKEAWAYS PR is not just sending out a press release, writing a book or entering some awards. It literally is the way you decide to dress, the way you decide to speak, the way you decide to greet your customers Your quirks and real-life experiences are your brand's hidden superpower. Let what sets you apart define your business. Knowing your values makes every brand decision simpler. In a world of AI people are actively looking out for fakes and avoiding them, which is helping to make authenticity more powerful. People can trust you. Clients enjoy learning from your experiences, not perfection. Happy clients and authentic testimonials do more for you than slick marketing. Use stories and emotion in your PR, they're what people connect with and remember. Take creative risks. Standing out beats playing it safe every time. You don't need big budgets for PR, starting small and following up works wonders. There is a lot you can do yourself. Use the phone, not just social. Actually tale to people. As you grow, keep reminding the world exactly what makes you valuable. Redefine success on your terms. A lifestyle business can be powerful, profitable, and deeply fulfilling. BEST MOMENTS “You need to keep reinforcing why you create value for your customers and how you do it, and your customers telling that story is the best way.” “Don´t give up you´ve got to be relentless with PR.” “People do business with people, human to human. Forget B to B, B to C - It's human to human.” “Try and take a photograph that tells a story.” “Start small, start local.” “I'm gonna be as bold as to say, for a lot of us, certainly in the Force Free community, we are effectively marketing ourselves to our peers, our competitors, than we are to our ideal audience.” “People are employing other dog trainers… and then they're ending up like not making any profit. They're ending up having loads more stress. They're not actually happy. ” EPISODE RESOURCES https://harveyandhugo.com https://www.instagram.com/harveyandhugopr https://www.linkedin.com/company/harvey-and-hugo The Pocket Sized PR Plan -  PRsonal Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/prsonal/id1671838944 The Pocket-Sized PR podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-pocket-size-pr-podcast/id1790644301 SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. How to Turn Scrappy Beginnings into Serious Success with Andre Yeu

DESCRIPTION Running a dog business is hard—balancing clients, new trends, and that constant search for success can be exhausting. In this episode, we are joined by Andre Yeu, founder of When Hounds Fly Dog Training. Today, we're talking about starting scrappy, building a thriving business, and the power of choosing your clients wisely. Andre shares how to move beyond “doing it all,” adapt to a changing industry, and stay authentic, doing so even as client expectations evolve. KEY TAKEAWAYS Winging it is a valid way to start and maybe doing training part time. Taking action before you have it all figured out is a great way to unlock real growth.   You don't have to take on every client that comes to you. Being selective builds a stronger business and can also be good for your reputation.   Real change comes with mentorship. Learning from people who are further along than you fast-tracks growth and greatly improves your confidence, but vet your mentor carefully. Forget what your peers think about the way you do things. It´s your clients you need to please. But still stay open to feedback. Adopting shiny new tech or employing the latest methods doesn´t guarantee results. You need to use what serves your business. Your business needs to evolve as your clients' needs change e.g. AI is making expert info more easily accessible, so dog owners need their trainers for the human support, empathy, and guidance technology can't offer. Trust is built long before a sale—multiple touch points across different channels let clients feel like they know you before you've even met. Your story is your superpower. Sharing your face and journey builds trust in a way no logo or certificate can.   The human touch is irreplaceable. As AI begins to take over, building real relationships and tailoring your service will increasingly set you apart.   BEST MOMENTS "I've always set criteria for the types of clients we work with, even if we are like starving and it's famine time." "Find a circle, your tribe of entrepreneurs, that will teach you the shortcuts so that you don't have to spend as much time experimenting." "People don't mind that they connect with me on social media, and they go to my classes and it's one of my team members teaching." "I wish I had looked harder back in the day for that mentor, that coach." "Our role has to change." The Curse of Knowledge – How to Stop Confusing Your Clients

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 19, 2025 52:22

In this episode, Jo & Vicky tackle what they call the "curse of knowledge" something they see a lot within the dog training industry. There is a strong tendency for trainers to use expert jargon and too much technical detail to the point where clients struggle to connect with and understand their dog trainer - a frustrating experience for both parties. Through personal stories and industry insights, they share practical ways to simplify your message, build a genuine connection with each client and stop overwhelming or confusing them. KEY TAKEAWAYS Overuse of technical terms and industry-specific language may alienate potential clients—plain language is essential for connection e.g. Members of the public still call themselves dog owners rather than dog guardians. Genuine communication and empathy bridge the gap between you and your clients. They foster trust and encourage engagement. Focus on outcomes and keep your explanations simple. Dropping the ego and not being judgemental are crucial for understanding clients' choices and supporting them without bias. Practical, hands-on experience is just as vital as academic knowledge. Both are needed for effective training and business growth. Observe and learn from successful communicators and social media accounts. Feelings of inadequacy often stem from gaps in business skills as well as in your dog training knowledge. When you broaden your expertise in both areas you suffer less from imposter syndrome. This makes you more confident and easier to connect with your clients and adapt to their needs. BEST MOMENTS “Remember who you are talking to.” “I remember going to clients, and was like, oh, yeah, “so the dog's olfactory system”, and they were going “what?!” “Gauge how much that person wants to know.” “It's still going to be difficult to fully understand how that person is going to interpret the knowledge that you're sharing, because everything's a bit subjective.” “Again, it comes back to that judgment of other people and other trainers." Owning Our Decisions: Reflecting on a Challenging Year at CBA

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2025 58:43

DESCRIPTION This year has been one of the hardest we've ever had in business. Making the decision to go all in and state publicly that we only work with force-free dog professionals wasn't easy, but it was the right thing for us, and for the values Canine Business Academy was built on. In this episode, we're being completely open about what that journey has really looked like. We talk about the uncomfortable moments, the mistakes, the fear, the times we might have come across as egotistical and why we're choosing to own every part of it. We're sorry to anyone we've unintentionally hurt along the way. Growth isn't clean. It's messy, confronting and sometimes painful, but it's also where integrity is tested and the truth gets louder. If you've ever had to make a decision that cost you comfort, clients, or approval, this one's for you. Because standing for something always comes with challenge but it's how you keep standing that matters. KEY TAKEAWAYS This year, Jo & Vicky took CBA 100% force free and have started saying that in a very clear way. Jo & Vicky slowly and painfully realised that being open to all trainers, while well-intentioned, ultimately put them at odds with their own beliefs about what's best for dogs.  Before you start, sit down and work out what your personal and work values are and set your business up to fit in with that. If you don´t, you are opening the door to inadvertently upsetting people when you realign your business with your values. Every business goes through challenges, accept that and do your best to be ready to work through them. Be aware of the role fear can play in letting yourself go down the wrong path or avoiding issues that need to be dealt with quickly. Seek out clients that are a good fit for you, in particular when it comes to your core values. BEST MOMENTS “ When we first launched CBA, we didn't have that clear stance,…we are force free trainers.” “It's almost like we just lost our way.” “We don't work with people who train like that anymore. However, we are not going to accept you talking about people in a derogatory way and tearing people down. That is not what CBA is about.” “We genuinely do care, and we genuinely do want to support .” “Just be unapologetically you, because that's all you can be. And if you piss people off along the way, it will be unintentionally, but hopefully that forgiveness can come back.” “We were cutting off our nose to spite our face hugely…our words and our actions weren't matching up.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. How to build a business without losing your life with Jeff Mask

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2025 82:07

DESCRIPTION Running a dog business can sometimes feel like you're giving everything; your time, your energy, your weekends and still wondering when life's meant to happen and it's all just suddenly going to feel like you've made it and got it right. In this episode, we're joined by Jeff Mask, firstly, an incredible human being, he's a coach, mentor, and someone who's become a hugely important person in our lives.  Together we discuss how easy it is to get trapped in overworking, people-pleasing, and trying to control everything and how those habits quietly cost us as business owners the very life we're working so hard for. We talk about what it really takes to build a business that gives you more freedom, not less, and how to protect your time, your relationships, and your sanity while you grow. KEY TAKEAWAYS Remember – You are building a business for freedom – not for burnout. Chasing “work-life balance” is a losing game, it´s unattainable, but achieving harmony between your home and work life is realistic.  Overworking and people-pleasing might feel necessary, but they're not. Both of those habits are quietly robbing you of the life you're working so hard to build. Knowing your “why” fuels you to set boundaries, say no, and stop scratting for scraps. Freedom in business isn't handed to you; it's earned by making tough choices about what you'll do (and what you won't). Religiously time block and protect space for your most important people, not just your to-do list. It's not about the hours you work, but where you put your focus.  Use the 80/20 rule to focus on what moves your business forward. Then, let go of the rest. Plan “bookends” around big work commitments, dedicating quality time before and after with loved ones to show they come first. True harmony happens when your family knows the “music” you're playing, not just the hours you're working. Open, honest conversations, especially at home, are non-negotiable. Your loved ones can't support you if they're kept in the dark BEST MOMENTS “Busyness and productiveness are not synonymous, but often our brains and our egos don't know the difference.” "Almost always, what holds us back from actually doing what we say we'll do, as far as balancing a great business and home life, is fear." “Love is spelled T, I, M, E …  It's really hard for people, especially kids, to feel that they're loved when you're not there. "Which wolf are you feeding right now ?... The one that's dark and negative and critical, or the one that's light and love and gratitude and abundance?... The wolf that is fed will win." Description: It's not your prices that are the problem, it's what you believe about them. Dog professionals tell us all the time: “People won't pay that.” But the truth is people aren't saying that. You are. In this episode, we talk about the mindset, money stories and hidden fears that stop brilliant dog professionals charging what they're worth. You'll hear: The iceberg of selling and what's hiding under the surface How your beliefs shape every sales conversation Why “I can't charge that much” is the biggest lie you tell yourself How to stop pricing from fear and start pricing from value What happens when you finally own your worth Selling isn't about pushing. WE COVER:  The biggest mindset blockers we see around selling and how to recognise and get rid of them.  The reason the belief that “people won't pay xyz” nearly always turns out not to be true - just something you´ve got used to telling yourself.  The Gucci vs Poundland analogy you didn't know you needed.  How your thoughts, emotions and behaviours are all connected under the surface.  How to spot when your actions and beliefs don't match.  Why if your actions and beliefs don't match, you'll feel the wobble, every time and what to do about it.  Why the price clients have in mind when they approach you is largely down to how you market, message, and position your business. BEST MOMENTS “If the pain is high enough, if the problem is big enough, they will find the money.” “Those prices should already be double. Force-Free Doesn't Mean Free. Selling With Integrity

Description: Most trainers try to sell by posting "So many spaces left to class on XXX", "Want help with your dog, get in touch", essentially “buy my thing"… then wonder why it doesn't work and convince ourselves that selling is icky. This Selling Season episode shows you how to sell every day without being salesy: build trust, show your face and name, mix value with clear asks, and stop keeping your offers a secret. We cover: The CBA jab–jab–jab, right hook (how to balance value with the ask) Why faceless pages kill trust (name, photo, voice — or no sale) Lives with 3 viewers, crickets on posts — and why you keep going Events/shows: how to start real conversations (and stop being a wallflower) The long game: lurkers who read for 6–12 months… then buy Awareness → Authority → Offer: make it easy to choose you Our motto still stands: Giving a shit is the strategy. Getting shit done is the method. For reward-based, force-free trainers who care deeply and want that care to pay off this is how you sell without the ick. KEY TAKEAWAYS Most people feel uncomfortable or “icky” about selling. They don´t want to be salesy, braggy or pushy. Allowing yourself to carry on fearing selling leads to missed opportunities.  Bombarding your audience with constant buy now posts erodes trust. Relentless self-promotion turns people off. Consistently show up, share your story, and let your audience see the real person behind the brand. Focus first on providing value - educate, offer insights, tips and simple solutions.  When trust is established, sales follow naturally – often, after months of “silent” observation by your future clients. Consistent, authentic effort, despite not hearing anything back, eventually pays off. It enables people to trust you. Be realistic. Don´t be disappointed when only a few people actually buy. Not everyone is going to need what you offer. Be patient, and you will sell to those who do need your service. BEST MOMENTS “Selling should not be seen as dirty, as icky.” “If you're selling a service that you wholeheartedly believe in and you know it's going to get a result for somebody, why the hell should you not sell it? .” “There are lots of times where your clients are lurking... you don't feel like anybody's watching, but they've been watching everything you do.” “If you're not talking about it, nobody knows anything about it. For me, selling should be something you do every single day.” “Selling should not be, in our opinion, that icky, horrible thing where you're just ramming something down somebody's neck.” EPISODE RESOURCES Previous sales episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/you-cant-help-dogs-if-youre-broke/id1727170978?i=1000731878365 SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. DESCRIPTION: We're diving deep into what ethical sales really look like when you care about dogs, people, and doing business the right way. We break down: Why cash is the lifeblood of your business (and not a dirty word) How to be the bouncer of your own nightclub i.e. who gets in, who doesn't Why cramming your packages with PDFs and “extras” isn't value, results are We also talk money mindset, confidence, taking payment on the call, and how to drop that “please don't answer” panic before every discovery chat. You can care deeply and charge properly. It's not selling out, it's running a sustainable, ethical business that helps more dogs and humans long-term. Giving a shit is the strategy. Getting shit done is the method. KEY TAKEAWAYS There really is nothing “icky” about sales. If you have something someone needs, you are actually doing them a good turn by telling them about it. Selling with purpose means offering your services in a way that genuinely serves your clients, while aligning with your values. The aim is to make sales that benefits everyone involved. When you know you truly have the solution that person is seeking, selling becomes much easier.  Focusing on delivering real value and results, automatically leads to financial success. Build your confidence in the service you offer. If something needs tweaking to make it better, tweak it. Don´t sell by undervaluing what you have to offer. Each sale needs to be a genuine win-win. Both you and your client need to get something of value from the transaction. Ensure you are targeting people you can genuinely help and that you are happy to work with. It is far easier to sell a simple, highly targeted service than it is to try to sell something complicated. Make it really quick and easy for the person to pay. BEST MOMENTS “We are talking about selling with purpose.” "I don't want to be the world's best kept secret, because it doesn't help anybody." "It really baffles my brain that as business owners, we think that selling is a bad thing."  "Why can't you make money and still be the most caring person ever?" "If all the win is for the client and you're losing out, how is that sustainable?" "You will burn yourself out. From Chaos to Confidence: Streamlining Your Business with Smart Systems

DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky sit down to talk about – using systems in your business. On the surface this sounds like a boring subject, an episode you might be tempted to skip. But, when you invest in the right business systems and learn to use them well you end up saving a huge amount of time and money, which also greatly reduces your stress levels. Listen in to learn how to choose the right systems, buy them at the right time and use them in a productive way. KEY TAKEAWAYS A CRM system helped Vicky and Jo streamline their appointment management, automate reminders, invoicing, client sign up and more. The right CRM gives you an overview of each client, so you can target them with the right messages and products. Start simply, and when you are ready to scale, invest in the systems you will need to manage a larger customer base. The right CRM will improve your customer experience and ensure all leads are followed up on. Automating your social media is a huge win. Consistent posting builds trust and the algorithm loves it. Avoid shiny object syndrome. Only buy what you need and don´t waste time trying to learn the features you don´t need to use yet. AI tools like ChatGPT can become a strategic partner in your business. Jo explains how she has trained it and which version to use. AI is a great writing assistant. Don't overcomplicate your website. Bloat stops people finding what they need. Remember, human connection is still your most powerful business tool. Don´t automate everything, still make those personal calls, reply in person and comment. BEST MOMENTS “Business systems sounds really boring, but you know us, we're going to jazz it up. We're going to CBA it up.” “If you are serious about building your business purposefully, you do need to invest in those systems.” “That's where the systems really come in, because you do get a lot of time back if you use them appropriately, and it's at the right time in your business to use them.” “For A CRM system, our biased verdict is Keap. We do have an affiliate code that we can give you to get you a storming deal with them.” “I'm a big, big advocate of chat, GPT and AI.”     EPISODE RESOURCES http://www.keapnow.com/canineplaybook SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky are joined by Jason Light, Director at PACT (Professional Association of Canine Trainers). They provide ABTC recognised courses and a support network for dog trainers who want to build ethical, resilient practices that grow fast and stand the test of time. PACT is known for its welfare-first, science-led approach to assessing  and training dog professionals.  Today's conversation isn't about competing voices. It's about exploring how we can collectively support trainers and behaviourists to build sustainable, ethical practices that work for them. KEY TAKEAWAYS PACT training is a combination of online and in-person. It is a highly flexible and supportive way to learn. At PACT they find ways to tick multiple business strengthening and ethical boxes with one activity.  Imposter syndrome holds most trainers back. There are several root causes PACT will help you to overcome yours. Counter-intuitively, knowing how you can exit your business, e.g. sell it, is freeing and empowering. Collaboration, not competition, is the future of the dog training industry. Practical examples of this working in the real world are discussed.  Building sustainable, ethical practices is essential. Sustainable includes building a business that will provide you with an income for decades to come. Compassion fatigue is a key reason trainers leave the industry. PACT provides training and support to address this issue. For long term success, business skills are just as important as dog knowledge.   There are lots of ways to work that enable you to only do the things you like doing and are good at. Jason explains how. BEST MOMENTS “How can we have a truly sustainable business in every sense? - the financial sense, longevity, resilience, as well as the social and economic benefits that you can achieve.” “We're seeing more behaviourists and trainers cross referring between each other.” “You can do it (PACT training) flexibly in your own time, but the in-person days are kind of fixed.” “We're really passionate about showing best practice... a really modern way of doing business.” “At PACT we find ways to tick multiple boxes with one activity.”  “I made a whole career out of finding fantastic people that do brilliant stuff and getting their support and paying them for it.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.pact-dogs.com Free taster courses - https://www.pact-dogs.com/pactfreecourses SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! The Work-Life Dance: Flexibility, Priorities, and Entrepreneurial Spirit

DESCRIPTION Are you struggling to find the perfect work-life balance? In this episode, Jo & Vicky challenge the very idea of work-life balance and explain why for them keeping both their personal and work lives ticking along in harmony is more of a dance than a balancing act. They explore what it really means to thrive as an entrepreneur, parent, and individual.  Jo & Vicky share several honest stories about how they achieve what they really want in both their business and personal lives, resist pressure to follow societal norms and avoid burnout. They demonstrate why flexibility, self-awareness, and embracing your unique “dance of life” is what actually leads to greater satisfaction and success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Chasing an idealised version of work-life balance that is impossible to achieve only leads to burnout. Instead embrace the “dance” and learn to adapt and be flexible. Don´t let society dictate what you prioritise. You and your partner know what really matters.  Define success on your own terms and regularly review where you are and whether you still feel that way. Keep the channels of communication open in all areas of your life. Accept that what you prioritise is going to change over time. Self-awareness is essential. Understand what really matters to you, your strengths and limitations. Be realistic about what you can get done. Allow yourself sufficient time and make sure you recharge your batteries enough. Recognise the dead ends you go down e.g. endlessly creating to do lists instead of taking action. Come up with effective strategies to break those negative behaviours. Ask yourself what your ideal life looks like in all areas of your life. Be realistic, at times you do have to sacrifice one thing to achieve another. But don´t fall into the trap of doing this becoming your norm. Don´t push things too far. BEST MOMENTS “We don't like the word balance - we prefer the word dance.” “It's impossible to achieve complete balance.” “The more you understand yourself, the more you'll be able to help others understand you.” “Allow yourself to go with the flow a bit.” “There is no business police. You can change whatever, whenever you want to change it.” “The choices that we made and continue to make every single day in this business, there is a cost to it.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION What does it really take to build a successful business partnership—and how do you navigate the bumps along the way? In this candid episode, Jo & Vicky discuss the real-life journey of their business partnership. They share the highs, lows, and the lessons learned.  Jo & Vicky cover understanding personality differences, improving communication, and not killing each other in the first few months. They share how embracing self-awareness transforms your relationships with clients as well as your business, and how to turn the challenges of partnering up into opportunities that create a far stronger business than one you could develop alone. KEY TAKEAWAYS Regularly communicate openly and honestly with your business partner to address challenges early. Understand and make allowances for both your own and your partner's personality types and working styles. Embrace self-awareness and be willing to work on your personal growth for the benefit of the partnership. Clearly define roles and expectations, but be ready to help each other as you learn and grow together. Be patient with each other. Don't be afraid to seek external help, especially when you are facing challenges. Jo & Vicky hired a mentor to help them grow. Make time to work on the business, not just in the business, to accelerate growth and decision-making. Use structured frameworks like DISC profiling to improve collaboration and understanding. Ask open questions to encourage discussion rather than just yes/no answers. E.g. This is my idea, what do you think about it? Accept and leverage each partner's unique strengths instead of trying to change each other. BEST MOMENTS “That's how I knew you were the right person, because we want to achieve the same thing.” “I think it's more intense than marriage … it can be make or break as to whether that business works.” “I love our journey, it's really fun looking back on it.” “It works because I'm you and you are me.” “You  need to keep having the conversations of what we are prepared to do for the business and what we're not prepared to do." “It is that dance that you have to learn.” EPISODE RESOURCES Andy Nisivic episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-impact-your-personality-profile-has-on-your/id1727170978?i=1000668232509 https://onedegree.uk – DISC personality profiling SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION Are you holding back from putting yourself out there and sharing your achievements because you fear being judged? Today, Jo & Vicky look at the real reasons behind self-doubt, imposter syndrome and a reluctance to self-promote, that holds so many business owners back. They explain how embracing your unique story and confidently sharing your wins inspires others while also accelerating the growth of your business.  They share practical strategies that enabled them to overcome imposter syndrome and share what they knew. A move that enabled them to build their training businesses, create The Canine Business Academy, reach and help hundreds of people and win awards. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sharing your achievements and what you offer is not about ego. It´s about serving your audience. If you say nothing, people never know there is a solution available for their problem. Overcome imposter syndrome by recognizing your unique strengths and focusing on your purpose. Be the bouncer of your own club. Define your audience – people you can genuinely help and work with effectively. Then, focus on attracting them. They will truly appreciate what you offer. Be authentic and share your story, it builds trust. It´s OK to turn people off. What you offer and how you work is not going to suit everyone. You are not a good fit - they don´t need you and you don´t need them. If you don´t take what you do seriously other people won´t either. Your job is not a hobby. Confidence comes naturally once you are clear about who you are, what you stand for and what you have to offer. Personal development matters, it is the main fuel for your business growth. Without authenticity, confidence and overcoming imposter syndrome you can´t grow very fast. Celebrating true wins, even if they are small ones, inspires both you and others. BEST MOMENTS “If something inside you will not shut the f**k up…  that needs to get out to the world, and it's your job to do it.”  “Everything comes back down to purpose. What do you want to achieve? Who do you want to help?” “If you keep it a secret, which effectively is what a lot of you are doing… You're doing those people out there that need you, your knowledge, and what you've got a disservice.” “It's not that I'm a bigger person than you or a better person than you. DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky shatter the "saturated market" myth. They explain how to turn your fear that there is too much competition in your area into a strategic advantage. It pushes you to take a fresh look at your business and identify your unique offering and gaps that need filling. You become more effective at making would-be customers more aware of why you are worth hiring instead of the competition, all of which enables you to continue charge enough to make a good living. Listen in to learn how to turn competition into your greatest opportunity, instead of joining the “race to the bottom”. KEY TAKEAWAYS Don't automatically assume that competition means there are not enough clients to go around.  Most areas have a lot more dogs than service providers can serve. You only need a limited number of clients to succeed. You don't need to attract every potential client, just the right ones for your business. Avoid the "race to the bottom". Lowering your prices rarely helps. However, there can be a place for genuine special offer campaigns. Focus on your unique value and delivering high quality. Continue to charge what you are worth. Conduct a SWOT analysis to objectively assess your business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Jo & Vicky´s course includes a module on doing this. You can learn a lot from your competitors. New competition is an opportunity to review and strengthen your business. Identify weaknesses in your competitors´ businesses. Filling those gaps is an opportunity for you. Approach business challenges logically, stay confident in your unique offerings, and see competition as a chance for growth rather than a threat. BEST MOMENTS “Pivot into using it (competition) as an opportunity, rather than something to be scared of.” "Why am I stressing out so much that all these people are going elsewhere when I only need five new people to succeed." “I don't want to lower my fees because then I'm going to have to work 10 times as hard to actually just put food on the table and pay my bills and deliver a s**t service whilst doing it.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION Are annoying clients really the problem, or could you be the source of some of their frustration? In this episode, Jo & Vicky reveal the surprising truth about why clients seem "annoying" and the role not managing customer expectations often plays when that happens. They explain how to master the art of clear communication, set realistic outcomes, and create services that truly serve both you and your clients.  If you've ever found yourself frustrated with "difficult" clients, this episode will change your perspective and give you the tools to create a more harmonious, successful business. Listen in to answer the question: Is the problem really my client, or is it me? KEY TAKEAWAYS Never assume clients fully understand what they are buying. Clearly communicate what clients can expect from your service, focusing on outcomes rather than just selling time or sessions. Set realistic expectations from the beginning, explain the process, potential challenges and the type of support they can expect. Be flexible and supportive. Avoid damaging your reputation by venting about clients in professional groups or online forums. Approach client communication with empathy. Try to understand why they might struggle to complete tasks. Be transparent about the time and effort required to achieve the required result. If you offer one-off sessions, make it clear that the problem won´t be 100% solved at the end. Regularly seek and incorporate client feedback to improve your service and communication. Be very clear about the work the client needs to do in between sessions, but be patient. Managing expectations is a multifaceted process that requires ongoing communication and support. BEST MOMENTS "Do they know what's coming next? Do they know what's expected of them? Or do you just spring stuff on them and then get annoyed that they're not doing the work." "Our role is to manage their expectations right from the outset." “You have to start asking yourself, ‘What do you want them to walk away with, and what do you want to walk away with?'” “It gets really messy, because you're essentially trying to sell an hour of your time, and you're not selling an outcome.” “Look at who you're helping, what your service is supposed to do and how you can communicate that clearly.” "Some people find it a bit judgey, even though it's supposed to be constructive criticism." “It's not our job to be coming down them like a tonne of bricks.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! Using Effective Follow Up to Supercharge Your Business Growth

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2025 53:33

DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky look at something that a lot of entrepreneurs get wrong – following up with would-be or existing clients. Those dog business owners that fail to follow up in the right way are leaving a lot of cash on the table, so this episode is important.  Using the tried and tested strategies Jo & Vicky share will help you to stay in touch with existing customers so that when they need more dog-related services it is you that they will turn to.  They also cover making the right impression on potential clients, fully understanding what they need, demonstrating that you offer it and follow up in a way that will persuade them to buy. KEY TAKEAWAYS Develop the right mindset about follow up. It is not being pushy. Done the right way, it is actually helpful. People´s circumstances change, so they may say yes to something at a later date. Follow up with past clients to see if you can help them with something else. Only take on clients that are a good fit for you.  Focus on understanding the needs of your clients and what they are trying to achieve. When you do that you automatically make more sales. Often, during their initial contact, customers hold back a bit. Use gentle questioning to uncover what they actually need.  Most people are not naturally good at sales. They struggle to get the balance right, so don´t be discouraged. With sales, practice, definitely makes perfect. The more leads you follow up on, the better you become at making sales. Don´t let the fact that what you are offering has a high-ticket value put you off from following up. If a client needs that type of help, they will find a way to pay for it at some point. Remember you are trying to persuade the human, not the dog. BEST MOMENTS “If you can have a strategy that focuses on retaining your existing client base, your business is onto a winner.” "You may feel like it's icky and pushy and not your place to change somebody's mind." "You're not in the business of dogs. You are in the business of people…. really think about the person again and what they need." "You can't sell something that costs £997 to somebody that you don't believe is going to give them the outcome." “Ask the right questions… it shouldn't feel like you are selling.” "It's not your job to persuade somebody. You don´t have to justify yourself. The person you are talking to has to see the value." “You have to come from that place of service and integrity, and you have to look at people as people.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! Everyone Has a Negativity Bias: Don´t Let Yours Get in the Way of Your Contentment and Success

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2025 42:24

DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky look at the negativity bias that all humans have – the tendency to fixate on what is wrong and get unnecessarily worked up about it. Beating yourself up for past mistakes you made years ago, constantly comparing yourself unfavourably with others and being overly critical are all examples of our negativity bias taking over, which leaves you feeling stressed and deflated. In a gentle and sometimes funny way, Jo & Vicky share how to recognise negativity bias in yourself and stop it from ruining your day and holding you back. KEY TAKEAWAYS Every human has some level of built in negativity bias.  Some people are naturally more positive than others, but positivity can be learnt by even the most negative person. Using the example of social media, Jo & Vicky explain exactly how to recognise when your negativity bias is getting in the way and what to do about it. Comparing yourself with others is mostly pointless, each business is unique, so what others are doing might not be right for you. Being clear about what you want helps stop you  wasting time and energy, so you progress faster which makes it easier to stay ahead of negative thoughts. Continually looking back and kicking yourself for what you didn´t do is very counterproductive. Failure is absolutely not a bad thing. You need to fail to learn. Be realistic, things are going to go wrong. Reframe, you learn new skills and become more resilient. Don´t be afraid of being wrong and stop beating yourself up when you are. You're constantly learning and growing, so being wrong sometimes is normal. Stopping yourself getting angry about little things makes a huge difference to your overall positivity e.g. It's not being a keyboard warrior or shouting at the telly. Constantly whingeing about things with friends is an easy trap to fall into. BEST MOMENTS “Humans literally go to the glass half empty first.” “Train your brain to look at something other than the negative.” “If you're asking them what they would do, you're asking the wrong question.” “Allow yourself to fail…graciously.” “Be aware of how you are reacting.” “Stop comparing yourself to everybody else, you are on your own journey, and that is all you need to worry about .” EPISODE RESOURCES An overview of negativity bias studies - https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3652533/#:~:text=There%20is%20ample%20empirical%20evidence%20for%20an,to%2C%20learn%20from%2C%20and%20use%20negative%20information SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! Finding Joy and Happiness in Your Business Life

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 23, 2025 41:45

DESCRIPTION In this candid solo episode, Jo & Vicky discuss the true meaning of happiness, especially as it relates to your business life. They share why success isn't just about reaching financial milestones and the role embracing challenges plays in creating growth in both your personal and business life, which in turn boosts your happiness levels.  As well as the role understanding your personal goals, avoiding comparison, and finding fulfilment in your unique journey play in creating an enjoyable life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Happiness isn't just about money - it's about time, experiences, and being grateful for what you already have. Pausing and realising what you have already achieved boosts self-belief. Self-care isn't about following trends. It´s about finding what truly refreshes and realigns you personally. Don't compare your business journey to others, it is draining and pointless. Everyone's path to success is unique and requires different strategies. Happiness is not a destination you reach. It´s a feeling you experience in the present moment, even amid life's complexities. Being comfortable with discomfort is crucial. You will have difficult days. You can be happy overall even when specific areas of your life are challenging. Happiness is about overall balance, not perfection. Don´t delay happiness by saying I will be happy when xyz is done.  True success means designing a business that aligns with your personal lifestyle and goals, not someone else's definition of success. BEST MOMENTS "We all try and strive for this happiness thing." “Comparing yourself to others all the time is fu**ing exhausting, because nobody is you.” “What is your version of happy?” “It's not only double the income, it's like half the work, it's just a win, win.” "No matter what you do, there is always a cost to something. And you have to ask yourself, like, what cost are you willing to pay." "Recognise that there are going to be moments, more often than you would like, where it is going to feel painful." "Psychological pain can be just as painful, if not more than the physical." “If you never get pushed, you're never going to grow, you're never going to move forward.” "If you are not happy in this exact moment in time, then you are not living, in my opinion, because happiness is not a destination." Execute Your Time Vampires

DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky discuss "time vampires" - those sneaky activities that drain your productivity and steal your precious time. They share their own battles with the issue and explain how they deal with the temptation to spend hours on social media, scrolling, playing mobile games, pursuing hobbies and doing chores that can wait until they have finished what they are meant to be doing. They share practical ways to reclaim time, boost efficiency, and align daily actions with personal and professional goals. Approaches that enable you to enjoy a balanced family and personal life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Time vampires are anything that distracts you from doing what you need to be doing. Time vampires do not always involve screens. Some people get distracted by hobbies, walking the dog, even cleaning when they should be doing something else. If you identify just 3 or 4 things that suck up your time and stop doing them, you gain back hours every week, sometimes every day. Try deleting any apps that are sucking up your time. Setting aside time and blocking out all distractions enables you to double what you get done. Setting hard deadlines helps you to stay focused. Don´t be afraid to pay someone to do things for you e.g. the cleaning. But be sure to use the time that frees up productively. For a few days, or a week, track how you spend your time. You will be stunned by the results. Time blocking is a very effective way to free yourself from your time vampires. There is no right or wrong, everyone wants a different life, which means one person´s time vampire is someone else's important task or leisure activity. Talk to your family and loved ones. Together come up with ways to balance how you and they spend their time so everyone´s needs are met. Where you spend your time and money reveals where your priorities are. BEST MOMENTS “You have to have the ability to be super critical of your own time and where you spend it.” “I reckon easily up to five hours a day I could spend on that game.” “I would binge six episodes of something in one night, and it would be two o'clock in the morning and I needed toothpicks to keep my eyes open .” “I will even procrastinate by making cups of tea.” “We all go through those periods where loved ones struggle with our choices.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.amazon.co.uk/90-Day-Brand-Plan-Competition/dp/1394221096 SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! Is the Future of Pet Care Vets and Trainers Working Collaboratively? with Dr. Katrin Jahn

DESCRIPTION For this episode, Jo & Vicky are joined by veterinary behaviourist Dr. Katrin Jahn, who has 25+ years of veterinary experience and heads up Trinity Veterinary Behaviour in the UAE. Katrin shares her entrepreneurial journey including running a veterinary clinic in Abu Dhabi, creating an online educational platform that breaks down professional barriers, supports vets across the world and empowers them to serve pets and their owners better.  They discuss the importance of collaboration between veterinary professionals and dog trainers. The episode explores entrepreneurship, professional growth, and the power of having a clear mission in the pet care industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Often behaviour and pain are intertwined. A dog that is in pain, not sleeping well, or with cognitive issues or anxiety cannot respond to training in the same way a healthy dog does. For trainers, being able to speak to and learn from a certified veterinary behaviourist or the animal's vet when they are struggling is transformative. If you notice something odd about the way an animal moves or behaves while being trained, groomed or cared for by you encourage the owner to take them to the vet. Support the owner and vet by precisely and concisely explaining what you have noticed.  Being surrounded by people who are working towards building their own business has a hugely positive impact. Katrin has worked with mentors at various stages to take her business forward. Having a coach gets you off the hamster wheel, enables you to see opportunities and create the life you really love. Note and examine every idea you have, even the off the wall ones, Katrin did and created an amazing new vet business model. BEST MOMENTS “Once you've worked that way (collaboratively), you almost think like, ‘Oh my God, why does everybody not work like this? .” “A lot of vets don't know enough about what trainers and behaviourists do.” “Being a little bit more kind of data oriented and trying to give precise information that the vet can then do something with helps.” “If your inner self isn't right, you can have the best strategy in the world, and it's not going to get you anywhere.” “I think (having a mentor) is almost a must have if you're wanting to create a business that's actually going to serve the clients you want to serve, but also serve you and make you happy. DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky sit down together to address some of the issues other dog business owners have raised on their Facebook group and in other places online. Including when to give up your day job and do dog training full time, how to manage the uncertainty you are afraid of and building a strong foundation for your business. They also share how to follow up when people who have shown an interest in your service don´t get back to you and how to get over a reluctance to actively sell and become an effective salesperson. KEY TAKEAWAYS Do your research, make reasonable preparations, but be careful not to drift into waiting for that perfect moment to make the leap; it will never come. Preparing yourself mentally is essential. You have to accept that not everything is going to go smoothly and that you are going to have to push through and make your business work. Make sure your business is foundationally sound, so it can survive slow periods. Don´t just learn about dog training, build up your knowledge of business too. Consider niching down and getting really good at one thing. Being the best is an effective way of standing out. All business owners need to get good at sales. Jo & Vicky share some approaches that work. Be persistent. Follow up with people until they tell you to f**k off. Ask questions that enable you to find out more about what the person contacting you wants. Be attentive and show you care. During the sales call you are in service mode, working out what the person needs and how you can help them. BEST MOMENTS “You can always put something in the way, there is never the right time, unexpected bills will always come in.” “Mentally prepare for the fact that you are going to have to do some graft and are going to have squeaky bum moments.” “If your mindset is open and you are willing to learn a different way, go for it.” “The human race has been brought up in a world where sales is considered bad.” “You´ve got to get f**king good at sales.” “Assume they are coming to you for a reason.” EPISODE RESOURCES Jo´s story - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/from-passion-to-profit-how-jo-scaled-her-dog-training/id1727170978?i=1000711087315 Vicky´s story - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-power-of-coaching-a-story-of/id1727170978?i=1000710192544 SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! Jo & Vicky are joined by Kane Baron who runs Disruptive Media (formerly Progressive Media), the UK's largest podcast agency. They specialise in branding and monetising content for commercial purposes, particularly podcasts and long form content. Kane learned his trade when Rob Moore, a serial entrepreneur who has clocked up billions of views across multiple media channels and has millions of followers, made him his business partner. To say Kane knows a thing or two about branding, marketing and building a business is an understatement. You can be sure that the advice he shares in this episode will be invaluable for you and your business.  If this episode leaves you hungry for more from Kane, why not join the Canine Business Academy - Kane is one of the mentors that delivers our pod classes - https://www.caninebusinessacademy.com/the-membership KEY TAKEAWAYS Business opportunities are everywhere. As a 5-year-old, Kane made £30 to £40 fetching drinks for guests at his parents´ wedding and being allowed to keep the change. Be curious, ask people about their businesses. When you do, you will see new opportunities for your own business. When you experience bad times, which you will, just keep going. Finding a good mentor is your shortcut to success. Because of their experience, your mentor will see potential in ideas you would otherwise dismiss. Listen to your customers' moans, they tell you what they desperately need from you. Your USP, unique selling point. Productise yourself and your offering. When you do, making sales is far easier. Sell outcomes – tell the customer what they will get out of your product. If you don´t sell packages of lessons your customer won´t be with you long enough to see results. Don´t undervalue your product, it´s better to start high and maybe bring your price down a bit, than it is to start low. If you don´t reinvest you will stop growing. BEST MOMENTS "My speciality is branding (and monetising) content for commercial purpose."   "Said with love...suck it up. It's kind of what you signed up for."  "If you want to get incredibly successful in your business, go find a mentor.. it´s the shortcut."  "If you´ve started a business, you are now a salesperson, we all have to become salespeople."  “Investing in yourself is the best thing you could ever do .” “You don't ever want to sell to the low end of the market. You always want to be reassuringly expensive.” “Productise yourself and your offering… that's what allows you to up your prices.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.linkedin.com/in/kane-baron-064b0a178/ @thekanebaron SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS Take our business brain quiz now for FREE - http://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/ https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness www.caninebusinessacademy.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION Have you ever felt that your dog business brand is just another generic logo with a paw print? If you have this is a must listen episode for you. Jo & Vicky are joined by Kate Hendry from Finbo Creative Studio who explains how to create a purposeful, authentic brand for your pet business.  She shares how to uncover your unique mission and what makes you different, then use that to build a brand that will get you noticed and remembered. Kate shares practical strategies that any dog business, regardless of size, will be able to use. KEY TAKEAWAYS Branding your business changes your mindset. It stops you from thinking of yourself as just a small local business and helps you to grow. Branded small businesses have an edge over large corporations. Their brands are more personal and easier for customers to identify with. Lean into the things that you are passionate about. Identify something that is different about you and build that into your brand e.g. If you sing while walking your dogs – you could be the singing dog walker. It can be a tiny thing, something that makes you more human and personable is ideal. Build a purposeful brand rather than a professional brand. It tells people so much more about who you are and what they will get from working with you. Don't be afraid to niche down. Kate´s business really took off when she did that. Niching down provides clarity – you know exactly who you are targeting and how to reach them. A clear mission and what makes you different from the competition are the foundations on which to build your brand. People crave human connection, and when you are authentic and share who you are personally, customers will be drawn to you. Kate teaches people to tap into psychology to design their website and advertising materials to make customers more likely to buy from them. BEST MOMENTS “A brand is not just a flat thing. It can have a personality, and it can match your personality.”  “As a small business, you have a whole lot more power in the fact that it's you running it, and it's not a team of faceless people.” “By the end of it (Kate´s training), they're like - that last piece of content took me 10 minutes because I have the foundations and know what I am talking about.” “We're just so blind to some of the special things about us…we put ourselves in a box.” “I just leaned into where I was in my life and the things that I'm passionate about.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://finbostudio.co.uk https://www.instagram.com/finbo_studio SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2025 76:10

DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky are joined by Shelina Duke The Poodle Trainer who switched from teaching primary school children to training dogs and specialising in Poodles. Shelina  very quickly went from only doing dog training in the evenings to working with clients from across the world.    She shares how family circumstances pushed her to change her mindset and seek out business training and mentorship that enabled her to grow at an astounding rate. KEY TAKEAWAYS   If you think of yourself as a small business, that is what you will continue to be – a small, local business. Changing your mindset is crucial. From the very start treat dog training as a business rather than a hobby. Invest in business training. You can learn a huge amount from non-dog training businesses. Stop caring about what other dog business owners think of you. Invest some of what you earn back into your business. Do not fall into the trap of working every single minute of the day. With social media you've got to keep showing up, it takes time for people to trust you. You need a strategy to get the most out of social media. The way you think about money and your business and the words you use hugely impacts how successful you are. If you don´t think you can grow and make a lot of money, you won´t. Comparing yourself with others keeps you small. If something doesn´t work, don´t hide from it, learn from it, tweak things and go again. Stick to your values and be client focused. BEST MOMENTS “I´ve never had freedom like this.” “As soon as I knew more about business, I asked myself – Why am I keeping myself so small?” “You are almost conditioned to stay in your lane.” “It's really not as scary as it seems to put yourself out there on social media.” “Bringing staff on is f**king scary.” “Mindset is huge, and it is scary, but you've got to give into it.” “I stopped enrolling in every single course. They taught me to train better, but it didn't help my business.” “The more you practice it, the easiest it is to get over it.” “Now I look back, and I genuinely don't know how I did it without going insane.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.facebook.com/shelinathepoodletrainer https://www.withtheflo.co.uk/training-your-poodle https://www.instagram.com/trainwiththeflo SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/   Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705   Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS   Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo shares her dog training success journey. At the age of only 29, Jo was an advertising account manager responsible for some huge brands including Skoda. She had a great life, but getting and training her Husky prompted her to change direction and become a dog trainer. In her 1st year Jo earned £30k and soon scaled up to achieve monthly earnings of £25k. She did all of this despite Covid and personal setbacks. Jo explains how she achieved this high level of success in such a short time. She also shares her experiences of various dog training courses, including The Kennel Club, Bark Busters, CPD, The UK Dog Whisperer, Sarah Whitehead , Elite Closing Academy and compares some of the techniques she learned. KEY TAKEAWAYS Continuous learning fuels success. It keeps you current, develops new skills, boosts your enthusiasm and can be used to attract more clients. Investing in yourself only pays dividends if you take action. Make sure the training is of good quality e.g. The course includes practising what you learn. Business training is vital. You progress so much faster when you run your business properly from the start. Don´t underestimate how much you can learn from books. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone. The right mentor will motivate you as well as provide advice that will transform your business very quickly. Big goals are motivating but also having smaller goals that are like steps to get you there works best. See everything you do as an opportunity to learn. Learning to adapt and make the most of the tools and resources you have available ensures you make progress even during the tough times. Joe did this during CoVid. Surround yourself with the right people. Respect your business partner and the fact that their experience gives them a different perspective on things. Always be open to new opportunities. BEST MOMENTS “The opinion was, don't get a husky for your first dog, you idiot, they are not pet dogs.” “I thought, ‘I want to make money off of dog training. I want to make really good money doing something I enjoy.” “If you're not going to do it, what's the point? don't invest, save your money.” “I will never be able to put into words the power that the community gave me.” “What work are you willing to put into this to make it work for you? ” “Step into the unknown and see where it leads.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! In this episode, Jo & Vicky reshare the story of how they met, why and how they set up The Canine Business Academy and Let´s Talk Dog Business Podcast which have both grown at a phenomenal rate. Vicky shares how meeting Jo and being coached by her transformed her approach, which enabled her to go from charging only £80 for her dog training to having clients scrambling to pay her £1,500. This eye-opening episode contains some real golden nuggets and ah-ha moments. It will help you understand why it´s time to invest in yourself so you can take your current business to the next level and leverage your knowledge to create multiple streams of income. KEY TAKEAWAYS Following the traditional dog training paths only got Jo & Vicky so far. They were working long hours for little reward. Trying to be a Jack of all trades and offer too many services wasted a lot of energy. Having to work so many hours and still not making ends meet was soul destroying and unsustainable. When you are working too hard, it is difficult to find the time to pause and reflect on what you can do instead. But if you don´t do this and change how you are working, you remain stuck living a life that drains you. You have to invest in yourself to be able to take things to the next level. Coaching is highly effective, you learn fast and get incredible support from someone who has been where you are now, Once you have committed to changing your business, go all in. The right coach will push you, so you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Once you have created one successful business, setting up another one is much easier. You need to believe in your true value and charge accordingly. When Vicky went from charging £80 to £997, clients who´d done the puppy class for £80 went ahead and paid Vicky £997, then £1,500. BEST MOMENTS “It´s physically hard work. It's mentally hard work, because you've got all these different parts to think about, all these different dogs.” ““I was accidentally building this bl**dy empire of dog walking that I didn't actually want.” “I genuinely think mindset is what sets people apart.” “Merging just worked beautifully because we had those same values. We were running businesses that were essentially the same.” “Ask - what positive action can you make today to start making a difference.” “There are so many versions of success.” “When you've got that support system …. You all have the opportunity and ability within you to create something that you never dreamed possible. In this episode, Jo & Vicky are joined by Hannah Antrobus aka The Spaniel Guru. She helps Spaniel owners to better understand and love their dogs. Hannah explains how she ended up niching down and focusing on one breed helped to grow her business. She provides some great tips to help you to build your brand, overcome imposter syndrome, ensure you charge enough, build rapport with clients and successfully collaborate with other dog professionals. KEY TAKEAWAYS People like authenticity. Sharing your lows as well as highs enables you to really connect with others. You will be trolled. Be ready for it and don´t take it too personally. In Hannah´s case it actually helped her to rank. Don´t be afraid to charge enough to earn well and enjoy a good standard of living. Other professionals are not afraid to do that, nor should dog trainers be. People who are always questioning what you are doing will in the end pull you down. Help your clients understand the positive impact your training will have, so they can see the value. Charging appropriately creates more freedom and enables you to develop a better business and service. Stop thinking of dog training as a charity service. It is a career. Not giving everything away does not mean you don´t care. Always start your day positively, it frames how you feel and impacts how well the rest of your day goes. Life happens. Even when you are successful you will still face challenges and experience some slow periods. Being adaptable is an invaluable skill. Just do what you do well and stop worrying about things that are not your responsibility. Niching helps you focus your efforts. Niching down makes it easier to build a strong brand. Don’t be afraid to reach out to other professionals and collaborate. Invest where appropriate. Get face to face with clients to build rapport. You can still do this using Zoom. BEST MOMENTS “There was a little bit of trusting my own intuition.” “If you drop that guard, you build rapport with them.” “We need to know when to learn and invest, but also not feel we have to absorb and be able to do everything.” “Progression doesn´t equal perfection.” “It´s getting comfortable with sometimes being uncomfortable.” “That time and energy you're spending on worrying about that person is time and energy you're not spending doing the things that you love.” “Keep doing you.” “Try not to overthink it.” “You are really client led.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://thespanielguru.com https://www.instagram.com/thespanielguru SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! How Proper Strategies Enable You to Choose the Right Tactics so You Stop Wasting Energy and Grow

In this episode, Jo & Vicky sit down to discuss all things strategy. They explain what a proper business strategy looks like, how to break that down into steps, choose the right tactics to achieve each step and implement them successfully. Jo & Vicky discuss the most common errors that business owners make when working out their strategies and share highly effective ways to make sure you do not make the same mistakes. KEY TAKEAWAYS Your strategy is where you want your business to be. Tactics are how you get there. Without a strategy your chances of succeeding are low. Be realistic about your strategy. If you want to achieve £10k a month, how many £35 sessions do you need to sell, can you really do that? If not, review your strategy. When you are sure of what you want to achieve, you choose the right tactics, so that you don´t waste time doing things that won´t work. Thinking only about the next step makes it more likely you will head in the wrong direction. When you run a workshop, work out what the next step for those clients could be and set them up to take it with you. That way you retain them. You have to take consistent action and be persistent. Be realistic about the effectiveness of each tactic e.g. Using social media for marketing is a good tactic, but because of the algorithm if you post only once you won´t get clients. Don´t give up too soon on a tactic that is working for others. Try it, analyse it, then tweak things. As you do things, ask yourself why am I doing this? This helps you double check that you are doing things that fit in with your strategy. Don’t use a tactic just because others are doing it. Double check that it is a good fit for you. Continue to learn but be wary of getting distracted from the path you have chosen. Constantly review, reevaluate and tweak your business strategies and tactics. Your strategy and tactics depend in part on what stage your business is at. BEST MOMENTS “There´s so many different ways to look at strategy.” “Some people blur strategy with tactics.” “You have to take action.” “We're forever tweaking our strategy.” “With a brain dump, you can just see all your ideas.” “You are constantly reassessing and re-evaluating all of the different tactics.” “With strategy mindset is linked to every single piece of it… It’s like connective tissue.” EPISODE RESOURCES hello@caninebusinessacademy.com SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky are joined by Michael Shikashio whose main focus for the past decade has been helping dogs that have a history of aggression. Michael trains other trainers to do the same, which has enabled him to reach and transform the lives of even more dogs and their guardians. Jo, Vicky and Michael discuss why he chose this niche and how doing so has benefited him, his clients and the profitability of his business. Michael explains how he built trust, authority and connections and quickly reached the point where other trainers were trusting him to train them. KEY TAKEAWAYS Focusing on a niche grows your authority, makes it easy to articulate what you offer, and results in more sales. Identifying a hole in the market and filling it is a win-win. Teaching others is a great way to help them and make your business far more profitable. Podcasts, conferences, workshops and writing articles for others builds trust and authority. Using social media helps but personal connection is far more powerful. There are education platforms that already have email lists of people who will be interested in taking your course, so start there. Build your brand with integrity. You will attract criticism/haters, don´t take it personally. Letting the negativity in limits your ability to love what you do and help your clients. Building a business is complex and can feel overwhelming. Break it down by asking yourself what´s the next step and focusing on taking it. Hire people to do your accounts etc asap. Look at it as an investment. Your time and passion are what you need to really grow your business. Don´t say yes to things until you are sure it will grow your business. How to evaluate this is explained in the episode. Initially you have to hustle and give more than you get back. But don´t do it long-term. It is not effective or sustainable. Automate everything you can, including in your personal life. Use processes to rinse and repeat what works. Keep things simple. Get one stream of income working before setting up another one. Be consistent. BEST MOMENTS “Spend the time to earn people´s trust, start by doing small things, little gigs .” “You might not want to do your flagship course on your own platform .” “Once you get your first hater, you know you’ve made it.” “We are not in the business of dogs; we are actually in the business of people.” “Always evaluate not only money investment, but also the time and effort investment.” “Bend, flex and pivot, but always come back to your strategy.” “Focus on one thing at a time.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://aggressivedog.com https://www.dogtrainersconnection.com SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION This episode is brought to you by J&V on the subject of JV…. Today, Jo & Vicky discuss Joint Ventures (JVs). They explain how joint business ventures work and why they are a virtually untapped way to earn extra income. Over the years, Jo & Vicky have used several different types of JVs. In fact, it is one of the main reasons they have grown so fast. They explain how taking advantage of win-win situations by collaborating with other dog businesses and others opens up new markets for you. Using real world examples, Jo & Vicky explain how taking this approach enables you to make more money faster, helps you to keep things fresh, learn, spot trends and provide additional support for your customers at no extra cost. KEY TAKEAWAYS JV stands for Joint Venture – a collaboration that benefits all of the businesses involved. Collaborating with other businesses improves your reach and enables you to serve your clients better. Don´t view other local dog businesses as competitors. See them as potential business partners. Many business owners unintentionally participate in joint ventures. But actively seeking them out is by far the best way to benefit. Promoting products you believe in and securing a discount for what you buy for your business or dogs, is a simple example of a JV. Being able to recommend another dog business e.g. A reliable groomer to your audience or customers is very positive for all 3 parties. Even if they work differently from you, still consider partnering up with other dog businesses. The chances are they are serving a slightly different customer base from you. Collaborating with other dog businesses is a great way to learn new ways of doing things and spot trends early. Working with other businesses in your area is an effective way to build your reputation and brand. Think outside the box, not all collaborations have to be with dog businesses. You could partner with a park based food stand to attract a group of dog owners to experience a free agility session or just a meetup you attend. BEST MOMENTS “Look to collaborate with other businesses that will align and support what it is you are trying to achieve.” “JVS should always be a win-win.” “We actively invite people into our group to speak that are our direct competitors.” “It´s about nurturing those relationships, building the trust.” “Your JV stuff doesn't always have to be a pet product.” “So much can be said for just going and having a chat with someone.” “You're going to help people off the back of the money thing.” “Ultimately, you can make it a win-win, if you understand one another.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! From hustle to passive – The truth about creating a passive income in the dog industry

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2025 40:44

DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky sit down to talk about creating passive income from your dog business. They share some of the ways they have done this and explain why in most cases the income they are generating is actually semi-passive rather than being 100% hands off. But as you will see when you listen to this episode, there is still a lot you can do to maximise the amount you earn for the hours you put into your business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Regardless of whether you are creating an in-person service, or a remote or online course, focus on solving the problem for your customers. Most passive income streams are not as passive as you expect them to be. If you write a book or worksheets, you´ve got to continually promote them. Converting an audience into buyers is hard; even if they are highly engaged and motivated, only about 1 in 100 will buy, and only after you have taken the time to persuade them. Courses can generate passive income, but they are rarely 100% hands off. Business to business courses are generally more profitable than business to consumer courses, but they are still not passive. People expect some level of support. The best way to generate income, including semi-passive, is to truly understand your customer´s pain points and provide a solution that works. Doing your market research ensures that there is enough demand. Jo & Vicky share several great ways to do this. If you find a good market, go for it, get your product or service out there asap, don´t worry about it being perfect right out of the gate. Don´t try to copy what other far more mature dog businesses are doing. Putting together a decent launch programme is time consuming, but essential. Adding value to your one-on-one course can work e.g. Providing access to reminder lessons or a more detailed explanation of something you teach. Game-based, easy to consume, bite sized training is currently selling well. BEST MOMENTS “Everyone likes a bit of passive income.” “I actually feel like passive income, or semi-passive income, however you want to look at it, is harder work than just getting out there and doing the thing.” “One person out of 100 is likely to buy, and that´s the reality.” “If you are going in from scratch wanting to build that passive side of it, the work involved isn’t going to feel passive.” “You need a big audience to make the evergreen side work.” “Gamification is a big thing this year, alongside your personal brand.” “You still get an income, you still get to absorb and help as many people as possible through the business, not through you burning out.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! DESCRIPTION For this episode, you get to benefit from one of the pod classes that the members of the Canine Business Academy have access to. This is an in-depth discussion with Adam Ashburn, the co-founder of Test Tube Marketing. They help businesses to generate more sales. Adam explains how to layout your sales pages and write content that holds the attention of the customers you want; make it clear you understand their pain points and can be relied upon to solve their problem. His surprisingly simple 17 step sales page checklist, which can be implemented gradually, is sure to significantly boost your sales. To get access to more pod classes, go to https://www.caninebusinessacademy.com/the-membership and sign up for a 7-day free trial. Once you know the academy is a good fit for you, the cost is just £27 +VAT per month and you can cancel at any point. KEY TAKEAWAYS A sales page is very different from other types of webpages. Talk directly to the type of customer you are there to help. Focus on what you can do for them. Stop talking about yourself, your years of experience, etc. It switches people off. You don´t need to constantly justify yourself. Use testimonials and case studies to do that. Don´t over complicate things. Just demonstrate that you understand the problem, know how to resolve it and can be trusted to help. Some people read every word; others skim read. Adam explains how to engage both types of readers. Avoid jargon so Joe Public can understand. The more generic your sales page is, the less impactful it will be. To avoid this, create detailed customer avatars. Outline your promise, be clear who it is for, what problems you are promising to solve and how your fulfilling that improves your customers´ future life. Think about how the person you are speaking to feels now, and how you want them to feel after you´ve helped them. Anticipate and address objections. Create a sales page for each service. Taking a business to the point where it turns over £100k is a big achievement. But there is no need to stop there, with the right approach you can earn a lot more than that. In this episode, Jo & Vicky explain how. They cover, changing up your strategy, pushing past the VAT threshold, why you shouldn't be afraid of paying more tax, when to take on employees, building assets separately so that you can sell them on, and making a lot of extra money from your knowledge. KEY TAKEAWAYS The strategy that got you to a turnover of £100k per annum is not the same one you will need to use to earn even more next year. When it comes to strategy, you need to know what to implement at the right time for the stage your business is at. If your goal is to earn £50k to £100k niching down and providing one, maybe two products, is the right strategy. Don’t fall into the trap of creating a business that has a huge turnover but has such high overheads that you still cannot take out a decent income for yourself. Many owners of big training centres have this issue. Don´t let the idea of paying more tax when you grow beyond a certain point hold you back. But do fully factor it into your pricing. Pushing past the VAT threshold is not easy, but necessary. Otherwise, your business will be forever held back. Regularly reviewing where you are and where you want to go ensures you are always striving for the right things. Keep your accounts up to date and do the analysis. Every time you put out an ad or post, track how well it works. If a marketing method is working, double down on it. Don´t be afraid of spending money on advertising that provides good ROI. There’s a lot of profit potential wrapped up in your brand and expertise. Continually nurture them so you can use them to generate more income over the long term, e.g. Sell coaching or a book. Create other related assets that you could potentially sell off at a later date. Jo & Vicky share several examples. Be careful about employing people. A lot of businesses do this too soon. BEST MOMENTS “As soon as you start pushing past that 100k mark, that's when the strategy needs to change.” “You have to reassess as you start to grow.” “So many businesses purposely cap their earnings so they don't go over that VAT.” “Start building up a bank of assets.” “You need to have multiple sources of income.” “They all supplement and support one another, whilst being a standalone product in their own right.” “It´s all about knowing who you are as a business.” “Really look at the data. Look at what your customers are saying.” “Get all of the knowledge that's in your head down onto something.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! In this episode, Jo & Vicky discuss how to avoid getting stuck in a cycle of not following through on what you learn. They explain why so many of us invest time and money into training but fail to take action and apply what we have learned. It's a very common pattern of behaviour that leaves you unable to make progress and grow your business. Jo & Vicky explain how to set specific goals, step outside of your comfort zone so you can benefit from more effective techniques and maintain motivation. They also cover overcoming fear of rejection, how to be honest with yourself about progress and recognise when it is time to tweak what you are doing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sustainable change takes time. Be consistent and patient. If you are not, nothing will change. Be honest with yourself about how much you are doing to change things. Often, when you look at the data you will realise that your efforts are too limited. Use measurable data to monitor how effective what you are doing is. We are all guilty of shiny object syndrome e.g. buying a course, starting strong, but being distracted by another course before we have taken action on the first one. Accept that making a change usually means a bit of discomfort. Cold calling is hard but very effective. Once you get comfortable with it, do it regularly, so that you never lose the skill. Stop using the “nothing works” excuse. If others are finding success you can too. Fear of rejection is normal, but don´t let it stop you. The more often you get rejected, the more resilient you become and the less it will bother you. Having a strong purpose and regularly reminding yourself of it will push you outside of your comfort zone and get you results. Sometimes hiring someone to do the day-to-day tasks is the change that you need to make. BEST MOMENTS “What have you identified that you'd like a different outcome for?” “What's the motivation behind wanting the change? And is the motivation high enough?” “You have to keep stepping out of that comfort zone if you genuinely want something to change.” “Social media… is the best form of advertising you will ever get. However, it is not the only form.” “I´d say there is an element of magpieing, because we are only human…there´s the little shiny object thing.” EPISODE RESOURCES Hannah Molloy episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/how-knowing-your-why-and-developing-your-character/id1727170978?i=1000655605787 SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! Mindset : How taking a one size fits all approach damages your business and personal development

DESCRIPTION In this eclectic episode, Jo & Vicky discuss the importance of mindset and the role it plays in getting the most out of working with a business coach, growing your business, coaching others and dog training. They also talk through why using a cookie cutter approach rarely works for your clients or for you. Jo & Vicky provide you with an effective way to uncover your clients´ past training experiences, motivation and challenges so you can tailor what you provide to meet their needs. They also discuss how to avoid letting your own mindset and biases negatively impact your ability to coach others or recognise where you need to change. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you are not spending the time understanding your customer and your audience, you are going to fail. When things are not going well, don´t immediately blame the client. First, ask yourself what role you may be playing in that failure and what you can do to improve the situation. If you have a lot of negative thoughts about your clients, it will come through in how you teach, so change that. Jo & Vicky explain how. Negativity is toxic, it drastically slows down growth. A lot of dog trainers are putting their clients in a box, and they're expecting them to ask no questions. Every dog owner and dog is different, which is why you have to offer them a personalised service that is tailored to them. Every business is different, so, never work with a mentor that only offers you cookie cutter solutions. Often, using a cookie cutter strategy will lead to you doing things that you are not 100% comfortable with and are, therefore, not fully committed to. A good mentor will push you but also know when to hang back and let you move forward in your own way. Timing is important when you are being mentored. If you are pushed too hard too soon the chances of failing are higher, which can lead to your giving up. BEST MOMENTS “We forget that we are dealing with sentient beings, both dog and human, and we all have different behaviours, perceive and consume things differently.” “I genuinely don’t think you can separate yourself from your business.” “You are calling the shots, and you are making the decisions, where are you making those decisions from? From the business mindset or from your mindset? “ “A brain is a bit like Spaghetti Junction … learn how to work through those barriers, blockers and limiting beliefs.” “Ask as many questions as you can to figure out how that person actually feels.” “If you're surrounding yourself with negativity, you’re going to be dragged down in two seconds.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! In this episode, Jo and Vicky discuss why so many dog trainers feel guilty about how much they need to charge to generate a profit. They look at why being afraid to set a high enough price point is so widespread within the industry and the negative impact this has on you and your customers. They explain, in detail, how to overcome this negative mindset so that you can help moredog owners, including those that do not have much money, and once again enjoy yourwork. This episode includes a process you can use to determine what the right price point is for your business. KEY TAKEAWAYS If your business does not make a profit, it will fold, and you will not be able to helpany more dogs. When your price point is high enough to cover all of your overheads and pay you adecent wage, you work fewer hours and have the energy to help other groups of dog owners who are in dire need. Everyone makes choices about how much they want to pay for things e.g. someonewho can afford a Range Rover might decide to buy a Kia instead. Your customers can choose to pay your prices or look for someone cheaper. Somemay even pay more than you charge to use a trainer that is closer to their home. Most people have already spent thousands on buying their dog and what it needsand are only too happy to invest more in training. Knowing your numbers is the first step in identifying the right price point for yourbusiness. One-off classes are rarely cost effective or sustainable for a business. Jo and Vicky explain why and what to do instead. High levels of customer retention make it far easier to stay profitable. Having a high price point does not mean you cannot help those dog owners who arestruggling to make ends meet. It actually enables you to help more of them. Look at how you feel about money, it has a huge impact on how you show up andyour ability to ask for what you are worth. BEST MOMENTS “Be yourself, offer the service that you believe is right.”“Stop using the word charging … it has a negative connotation .” “Those businesses that have really good customer retention are the ones that succeed .”“If you don't go in with a higher ticket model, you're going to be stuck really quickly .”“The few that are willing to pay the higher investment allow you to be accessible to nearlyeverybody you want to be.”“If you genuinely want to be accessible to everyone, you have to make sure that the business is looked after.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKShttps://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusinesshttps://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.comCommunity Facebook Group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTSMeet Jo and Vicky!
