She's a musician whose artistic vision and songwriting are every bit as distinctive and expressive as that spectacular voice of hers. Frazey Ford's trademark tremulous croon first became well-known as part of the vocal blend for globally-renowned Vancouver folk music mainstays The Be Good Tanyas. While that band's aesthetic leaned toward the folky and jazzy, Frazey's own instincts have always been strongly inclined toward a classic soul music feel.  Her 2010 debut album Obadiah began to chart her own unique artistic course, which she further developed with 2014's Indian Ocean, and 2020's U Kin B the Sun.  In this free-wheeling conversation, we'll learn about the rather stunning experiments in creativity that led to her beautiful latest release; as well as the nearly stranger-than-fiction story behind Indian Ocean, which turned 10 years old in October of 2024. Those sessions took place in Memphis, in the studio where many of her all-time favourite soul songs were recorded in the 1970s – with the very musicians who helped to craft them.    And as a special bonus treat (and a meta experience of sorts) – we conclude this episode of Hidden Track with an actual hidden track! One that appears at the end of the streaming version of Indian Ocean. This is a Hidden Track Story from a dressing room at the Arden Theatre with the wonderful Frazey Ford.  Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Graphics: Craig Taffs | Music: Doug Hoyer The Hidden Track Podcast is a CKUA production made possible by the generosity of our donor community. My friend Jolie Holland and I first met when I edited, overdubbed, and mixed her album Wine Dark Sea in 2014, ten years ago. Around then we even played a short 2 song set live at an Elliott Smith tribute show. A few years after that we worked again on Wildflower Blues, an album she did with Samantha Parton, her former bandmate from The Be Good Tanyas, and recently I prepped a re-master of her debut album, Catalpa. We thought it'd be fun to talk about her recent album, Haunted Mountain, and how the record came to be, and working on it with Justin Veloso and Adam Brisbin. Obviously, I was curious, as here was a great album of her's that I DIDN'T work on. So, while in LA I dropped by Jolie's apartment, she cooked us a great dinner, and then we sat down with a bottle of wine on some creaky chairs and started talking. So here, drop in on our conversation as we are discussing Willie Nelson. Enjoy!

Their debut album Blue Horse was named 2002's top 50 releases by Q Magazine (UK) and the band would go on to release more albums cherished by fans all over the world. Their albums Chinatown and Hello Love were met with glowing reviews including four stars from Rolling Stone Magazine and the band sold out concert halls across North America and Europe. Sam tells us about how trauma from her early childhood ultimately set her on a journey that would see her not only find her musical voice and people, but create what I think is one of the greatest Canadian bands of all time The Be Good Tanyas. She tells us what she thinks creativity is and what it wants from us, how she found her bandmates, the joy and challenges of collaboration, and how lyrics come to her -  including the story of how one of my very favourite songs of all time by any band was written, The Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs (hear an excerpt of this song in the episode) Things Sam and I talk about-Her ideas on how creativity and creative intelligence are often part of a lineage and the yearning that can create within us -How being a twin made her into a great collaborator-Finding her long lost father and how that separation fed her desire to become a musician-Growing up in the shadow of a sibling born with extraordinary musical talent, and in a home with tormented, abusive adults feeling that she had to do her music in secret and how the grief from those things ultimately drove her to find and express her own creative gifts-The magic that can happen when we know how to approach creativity from a place of truly not knowing, beginner's mind. -What is inspiration and why do we feel like we have to wait for it? What if it is waiting for us? -How she met Frazey Ford, co-founding member of the be Good Tanyas-The joys and challenges of creative collaboration-How the words and melody for The Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs came to her and what the song means to herBuy her music on Bandcamp!Episode NotesIn this episode Kate speaks with Sam Parton, founding member of the wildly popular, Canadian Alt Folk band The Be Good Tanyas. Their debut album Blue Horse was named 2002's top 50 releases by Q Magazine (UK) and the band would go on to release more albums cherished by fans all over the world. And thank goodness for all this because the music and lyrics that Sam has been able to allow to come through her have woven themselves into the tapestry of my own (and I am sure millions of others) lives. She had a strong drive to follow the lineage of creativity, to find out how the people who created music that spoke so strongly to her like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, were able to create those things.Sam was a founding member of the band The Be Good Tanyas whose debut album Blue Horse quickly earned them cult status as a beloved Alt Folk Band, it was named among 2002's top 50 releases by Q Magazine (UK) and the band would go on to release more albums cherished by fans all over the world. Their albums Chinatown and Hello Love were met with glowing more reviews including four stars from Rolling Stone. The band toured sold out concert halls across North America and Europe. Their music was featured in tv shows like Breaking Bad and The L word. My excitement was because here I was sitting down in real life, with the person who had brought music and lyrics into the world that had been on the soundtrack to many of the important moments of my life for the better part of 20 years from weddings and births of my children to lazy sunday brunches and sunny sunday afternoons cleaning the house, in some way Sam had been with me through it all and here she was sitting down with me to tell me the stories of how it all came to be. One of my favourite moments in the episode is when Sam tells the story of how the lyrics and melody for  The Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs came to her. This is one of my very favourite songs of all time (not just from the Be Good Tanyas repertoire) we got permission to share some of the song with you which you'll hear when we get to that part of the conversation. If this podcast is meaningful for you, if you get inspiration or encouragement or simply raises your spirits to listen to it, please sign up to make a small $5 or $10 contribution each month. Like any adoring fan I may have gushed a bit and bravely asked her to join me in conversation on the show, hers was an immediate generous, warm and full-hearted YES. It took us a few months to line our schedules up and I am so pleased to be able to share this conversation and her music with you today. Here is my conversation with Sam Parton. In the weeks after this interview was recorded, Sam and I went on a walk through the sun dappled forest near my home. We talked more about life, creativity, and how much music industry has changed, with streaming services making it more difficult than ever before for musicians to make a living with their music. I wanted share some ways you can support Sam and her music. You can find those in the show notes on KateShepherdCreative.com To me Sam's story is a beautiful love story, the love of a little girl for her natural born gift, the love of a daughter for her long lost father, and the love of an artist for creativity itself. Sam gave me so many things to think about, I really appreciated what she said about putting down the projections of how we see others as being so much more prolific or professional than which can help us to be brave enough to take the risk of looking like we don't know what we are doing -  because from that place of lighthearted silliness magic usually happens. And as usual the word I pulled for today's show was perfectly perfect. It was inspiration. I got the truthbumps when she started talking about inspiration. Friends, I think she might be right. What if it IS the other way around? What if inspiration is waiting for us? What would be available to you if you were to approach your creative practice as though inspiration was already right there waiting for you, and to allow yourself to approach creating from a place of truly not knowing anything and waiting to be shown?Special Thanks to Sam Parton and Birthday Cake Media for permission to use The Littlest Birds Sing The Prettiest Songs in this episodeKate Shepherd: art | website | instagramMorning Moon Nature Jewelry | website |  instagramCreative Genius Podcast | website | instagramSam Parton: website | instagram | bandcampResources discussed in this episode:Bob DylanNeil YoungDolly PartonJudy GarlandPlease share the show with a friend and if you are moved to make a financial contribution to the production of this podcast, THANK YOU here is the link for our Patreon

In fact the popular TED Talk by Alexandra Sacks on Matrescence, was inspired by one of Aurelie’s conference talks. Aurelie’s working definition of the term Matrescence is: “The process of becoming a mother, coined by Dana Raphael, Ph.D. (1973), is a developmental passage where a woman transitions through pre-conception, pregnancy and birth, surrogacy or adoption, to the postnatal period and beyond. The exact length of matrescence is individual, recurs with each child, and may arguably last a lifetime! The scope of the changes encompass multiple domains --bio-psycho-social-political-spiritual-- and can be likened to the developmental push of adolescence. Increased attention to mothers has spurred new findings, from neuroscience to economics, and supports the rationale for a new field of study known as matrescence. Such an arena would allow the roundtable of specialists to come together and advance our understanding of this life passage.” - Aurélie Athan, Ph.D. Listen in to this super interesting and thought provoking podcast to hear us discuss: - The history of Matrescence - The importance of reviving an understanding in this area of Matrescence and creating new language for a greater understanding across many professions and amongst our communities - Aurelie’s 15 years of dedication in this area, the how, why and discoveries - The spiritual aspect of Motherhood - Creating a wholistic cross-disciplinary approach Find out more about Aurelie’s work, professional courses and papers at her Website and Twitter Find out more about me at Pollination Mamas Website Podcast Sponsor - Olive Gap Farm ’The Littlest Birds' The gorgeous song features on the intro and outro. Hello ery'body... Theresa is in ITALY so it's just me, Shana Falana, holding down the fort! It's also my last day on the air, but please don't be sad... Theresa is excited to continue the "i want what SHE has" journey and will keep bringing you incredible guests and conversations. It's been an honor to serve you all, I'm happy to report that my music life is picking up and I just need do 'self care' and let something in my schedule go, alas this glorious show.  My first guest today is Katy Kondrat. She is a mother, singer, the manager of the Kingston NY Farmers Market, and now the council member (but also founder) of the Kingston Food Coop. Katy's interest in bringing community and farms together started when she was at SUNY New Paltz. We talk about her love of collaboration, music, and her gift of community organizing. She recently launched the membership drive of Co-op at Rough Draft books during the Common Wealth Hudson Valley event, in which Evelyn Wright, founder, explains to us some of the alternative economic growth that is happening here. We play a clip of Evelyn's introduction! My second guest today is Jolie Holland.  She is a beloved singer, songwriter and performer that you may also remember from the Be Good Tanyas. Shana and Jolie knew eachother in San Fransisco in the early 2000's which made for a more intimate interview. Jolie shares  about life on the road, her stage fright, and how difficult the music business is. Her message ultimately though, what else would I do? The answer, "keep going".  Self Care: I (Shana) share about how this show has been a gift to ME! By interviewing women this last year 'that have what I want' it has aloud me to take my power back instead of giving it away, thinking that others have things I could never attain.... I also read from a quote from the book "Get Over It" by Iyanla Vanzant. Today's show was engineered by Ben Benton of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org with special support from Manuel Blas. Next week our guests are yoga teachers Nidhi Huba, Shawn Harrison and Cory Nakasue. We heard music from Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/. For the final installment of WomensRadio’s Guerrilla Showcase @ the 2009 Indiegrrl Conference in Nashville, TN we proudly present an encore performance from Pacific Northwest Folk legends Sharon Abreu & Michael Hurwicz! Sharon and Michael share an intimate, socio-environmentally enlightening performance with the fearless fans that stuck with us all the way to the end … well past 1AM early Sunday morning! Unfortunately, our recording equipment had all it could take after 25+ live recordings in 3 days, and (lucky for us (and you)) Phyllis A. Travis came to the rescue with her recording gear (and personal engineer, Tarbell)! Thanks Phyllis! Throughout the set, we assume the role of a plankton on “The Food Chain”, discuss the invention of a fretted standup bass with Michael, hear a comparison between Sharon/Michael’s music and The Be Good Tanyas and learn the difference between Irthlingz.org and Irthlingz.com. All-in-all the 2009 Indiegrrl Conference facilitated one of the BEST times we’ve ever had showcasing and interacting with the world’s finest Independent Female Musicians. BIG shouts out to Vicki Blankenship and all of the volunteers who worked their behinds off during the conference, you deserve it!
