It's a tale of two halves on Dad Bod Rap Pod this week. In the intro segment we take a look back at The Fugees' first album Blunted on Reality, released 30 years ago in the thick of one of hip-hop's best overall years, 1994. For now, let's charitably call it an uneven debut from a group still finding its voice. Please click play on the episode to hear a lot more of our thoughts. This album is full of baffling decisions, yelling, and very few cool moments. After the break, hosts Nate LeBlanc, Demone Carter and David Ma turn our frowns upside down and discuss some of our favorite underground hip-hop releases of 2024 thus far, kind of a halfway through the year check in. We have nuanced takes on and praise for Heems' album LAFANDAR, Mach-Hommy's brilliant RICHAXXHATIAN, and Schoolboy Q's occasionally floaty Blue Lips. If you're reading this please consider supporting DBRP by joining our Patreon, where for a few dollars a month you get exclusive access to a steady stream of bonus audio segments, eclectic and well-researched playlists, as well as tons of music recommendations from us as well as our community of homies. www.patreon.com/dadbodrappod DBRP is mixed by Taylor Weng, produced by Demone Carter, explained via theme song by Cutso and DEM ONE, has art by Dewey Saunders, is booked by David Ma, contains the high pitched and extra loud laughter of Nate LeBlanc, and is heard via the mighty Stony Island Audio podcast network.
Heems and Lapgan make a perfect combination. After a six year hiatus, the former Das Racist rapper recently teamed up with the Chicago-based producer/beatmaker for his latest album, "Lafanda". With a renewed focus, Heemy joins us alongside Lapgan to discuss its creation, working at Spotify during his time away from making music, developing and building his multi-purpose brand Veena, and more!
A big club tune from Ahadadream, Priya Ragu & Skrillex. A quality track from Ghetts feat Sampha. Hip Hop from Danger Mouse, Black Thought, MF DOOM, Heems & Lapgan. Jazz from Sefi Zisling and Michael White. New songs from Hiatus Kaiyote & Bryony Jarman-Pinto. An epic remix of JIM by X Press 2. Broken Beat from XL Regular and Bruk Rogers. Plus plenty more music treats.

Himanshu Suri is best known by his rap name Heems. We wanted to have Heems on not just because we are a fan of his former group Das Racist (you may remember their song “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”) but because we wanted to talk to him about Punjabi food. About growing up in Queens. About his new passion for gardening. Check out his very cool new album, Lafandar. Also on the show is James Harris, one half of Throwing Fits, a very funny podcast and online community dedicated to all things menswear. We wanted to invite James in not just to talk about chef fashion but also to find out about where he's eating and drinking around his hometown of New York City. We also get into Fanelli vs. Lucien, not being able to get into Gem Wine thanks to TikTok, eating fried prawn heads, Japanese food at home vs. in restaurants, and eating the miso black cod at Nobu as a kid. We also get the Throwing Fits line on Dimes Square. This is a great talk with James, a real one-of-one guest.MORE FROM HEEMS AND THROWING FITS:Dosa Hunt! Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:46). The Interview (2:46). Few things have been more important to me in my life than hip-hop music. Growing up, I lacked identity and a sense of community. So as I continued to listen to more and more hip-hop music in my teens and early 20s, it quickly became a key vessel for me to learn about the world and connect with a culture, and ethos that I resonated with. And yet, as an Indian guy, it was rare that I ever saw someone who looked liked me that was contributing to this artform that I loved so much. It was hard to see how I fit in, if at all. This all changed once I heard the music of Heems, known for his work in Das Racist, Swet Shop Boys, and as a solo artist. Hailing from Queens, NY, Heems has successfully injected his Indian roots into a brand of witty, thoughtful rap... and invariably helped me see that there was space for people like me in hip-hop after all. So I'm pleased to welcome Heems, as well as Chicago-based producer Lapgan to the show, who produced the wonderful instrumental album History from last year, as well as the new collaborative album with Heems, LAFANDAR. In today's episode, we talk about incorporating Indian culture into hip-hop, Heems' new venture Veena, and the making of this incredibly creative new album, LAFANDAR. Heems' experience ingratiating himself in hip-hop culture (4:00). Importance of desi representation (7:37). Heems' legacy (13:52). The inspiration behind Heems' new venture, Veena (20:04). The features on LAFANDAR (28:58). Inspiration behind Lapgan's 2023 instrumental album, History (32:28). The untapped potential of Indian music in hip-hop sampling (36:30). The LAFANDAR listening experience (43:21). The musical direction behind LAFANDAR (52:09). Heems' witty, often hyper-referential, raps on LAFANDAR (56:46). The natural creative relationship Heems and Lapgan (59:21). The political focus in Heems' music (1:00:48). Upcoming projects / merch / tour dates (1:03:26). Whether it was back in 2005 when I was first starting to develop a distinct affection for the art form, or even now, a whole 17 years later. When I look at the artists that soundscape so much of my life that I admire, who I lean on to process trauma, to escape my day to day, to instill some fun and confidence into my life... these artists rarely, if ever, look like me. And that is why I want to take you on a quick journey through the looking glass of an Indian lover of hip-hop, and discuss the importance of representation through the art form we all love, hip-hop. Throughout, I will also highlight a few pivotal artists in Heems, Big Baby Gandhi, and Madlib along the way. -- Fiending for some more quality rap content? The best rapper on this pod, first coolest. This week, the boys are welcoming the man himself, Himanshu “Heems” Suri, to the stu. Heems came through to spit bars on why exactly Das Racist broke up, fumbling the bag, tour life pre-social media, the curse of being ahead of your time, the enduring legacy of “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”, getting roofied in Japan, the joke rap label, learning how to take care of your mental health, memories of Anthony Bourdain, the best Indian food in Queens, leaving rap for the corporate world of a 9 to 5, ambitions of a retired rapper, whether or not Nav stole his swag, the culture shock of attending Wesleyan, going to high school with James, gangs of Stuyvesant High, supporting Arsenal, blowing bags at Stoffa, a very special TF freestyle and much more on this deep and dynamic episode of The Only Podcast That Matters™. Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING In Episode 93, I was joined by a very special guest with me who has had a particularly affect on me as a brown hip-hop head growing up: Big Baby Gandhi. Hailing from Flushing, Queens, formerly of Heems of Das Racist's Greedhead label, you may have heard him on his solo work through well-received projects such as, Big F****** Baby, No1 2 Look Up 2, or We Live in a Society... or on a track with the Das Racist crew. He is thoughtful, charismatic, and funny as hell, and is also currently a practicing medical writer. Hear a sneak peak at the outspoken nature of Big Baby Gandhi, as I began recording prior to us even legitimately beginning the interview like normal (0:49). An introduction to Big Baby Gandhi (7:08). Gandhi speaks on his upbringing and exposure to hip-hop as a Bangladeshi immigrant, growing up in New York (8:42). Gandhi breaks down the fantasy that lies in rapper finances (17:37). Gandhi dives deep into the increasingly standardized methods in which much of music is created these days (26:24). Gandhi discusses changes in how people consume music (29:52). Gandhi details his belief that music and culture generally is stuck in a loop, leading to nonsensical “culture wars” that distract the common man (particularly minorities) from the real issues (33:58). Gandhi discusses his views on brown representation in hip-hop, and generally finding a way to being authentic as brown person in American society (50:35). Gandhi describes how he came up with the moniker of “Big Baby Gandhi” as a rapper name (1:03:40). Gandhi describes how it felt to release his first project, Big Fucking Baby, to critical acclaim (1:06:21). Gandhi describes his relationship with Heems and Das Racist (1:11:08). Gandhi discusses his recent NFT drops, and his thoughts on NFTs as a general concept (1:17:25). Gandhi gifts us with a dope FREESTYLE (1:21:45). We had the pleasure of interviewing Small Black over Zoom video! Formed in 2009 as a bedroom recording project, Small Black first made waves with their eponymous debut EP. Recorded in the attic of singer Josh Kolenik’s uncle’s remote Long Island beach house/surfboard workshop, the EP served as an introduction to the group, with its pulsing patchwork of vintage synths and casio beats culminating in the breakthrough single "Despicable Dogs." This track cemented them as pioneers of Chillwave, the sound of which seemed to get its hooks into so much music across the 2010s. The project evolved into a fully-fledged touring act, consisting of Kolenik (vox/keyboards), Ryan Heyner (guitar/keyboards), Juan Pieczanski (bass/guitar), and Jeff Curtin (drums), and this live influence showed up in their debut LP on Jagjaguwar, 2010's New Chain. The loopy, weeded-out album found the band messing around with hip hop drums & samples, which they further explored on 2011's Moon Killer mixtape, collaborating with rapper Heems & remixing their own material through this kaleidoscopic lens. Years of hitting the road hard sent the band after a brand new sound & aesthetic with 2013's beloved Limits of Desire. Chasing the 80s pastiche of The Blue Nile & Talk Talk, SB upped their production chops, writing, recording & mixing the record from scratch, with the anthemic "No Stranger" & "Breathless" leading the way. Punctuated by the incredible visuals of directors Nick Bentgen and Yoonha Park, it was a huge step forward for the project. 2015's Best Blues, led by "Boys Life," followed further down this sophisti-pop path, adding more organic flourishes, choral samples & a little goth energy into the mix. 2020 finds Small Black back in the game with a brand new label, the vaporwave upstart 100% Electronica. Working again with mixer Nicolas Vernhes, the band’s new record, Cheap Dreams is out now! We want to hear from you! On this very special episode, the #ButterChickenBoys facilitate an illuminating panel at @LincolnCenter called desi:NOW- Then, Now and Future, hosted by the @desinowshow. @DJSharad and @DJJuicy sit down with founder and executive director of the Indo-American Arts Council Aroon Shivdasani @aroonshivdasani , artist and rapper, and curator at @Spotify Himanshu “Heems” Suri @nehrujackets , CEO and founder of Mela Arts Connect Heena Patel @heenatabla , and founder of Product of Culture Archana Misra Jain @archanamisrajain. Aroon began her mission in 1998 as a response to the lack of visibility and recognition for the burgeoning world of Indian arts and culture, and describes the process through which she promoted these two aspects for artists. Heems speaks to not only how concepts of marketing have changed from his early days as an artist to now, but also what it means to strive for visibility. He asks the expedient questions - what is the end goal for us? What types of assimilation and visibility do we want and for who? Heena comes from the world of Bollywood and the classical South Asian arts. She talks about the rampant eurocentrism of art and the ways we can go about to dismantle that. Archana speaks about her company Product of Culture's mission. It is an online curation platform and an offline community builder. She contends with the challenges of building a unifying platform for South Asians - an incredibly diverse group - particularly in the age of social media's influence. What is diversity and what is inclusion? What is representation and what is collaboration? How do we teach our children? Tune in to hear an in depth and timely dialogue that addresses it all. And most importantly - let's keep the conversation going.
A track from the Neneh Cherry album produced by Four Tet. New music from Nikitch & Kuna Maze forthcoming on Tru Thoughts. UK Street Soul from Venus Tribe. We talk Hide the Pain Harold, Nate pops in real quick, we discuss an enterprising young couple in Florida, and Nicky has a dog boner story. Joints of the week are "Bangladesh" By Your Old Droog and Heems, and "Slow Motion" by Easy Life. We take a break and round out the rest of the show talking about Disney Channel original movies.

Being a cab driver in NYC isn’t easy. You're drinking coffee to stay awake, then you’ve gotta piss and find some time eat, but there’s nowhere to park. But Punjabi Deli has been an oasis where you could park out front and grab some food. In 2010, the city started construction that made that impossible. Today, I’m talking to the the unexpected person who helped solve the problem: Punjabi-American rapper, HEEMS, a.k.a. Himanshu Suri. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Sid Vashi is a producer and multi-instrumentalist from Detroit, Boston, and more recently Gurgaon, India. A man who enjoys listening to R.D Burman and J Dilla simultaneously and often refers to himself in the third person. With a deep love for sample based music, he tries to incorporate these ideas to his unique brand of electronic music, by using and manipulating samples "until they take on a personality and voice of their own." We picked up on this young chap, earlier this year and have been holding on to this mix for a while. His stunning Motherland Tourism EP, available to download via his Bandcamp, came as one of the most surprising releases from any artist this year, fusing modern production sensibilities with Indian classical/Bollywood samples. With Sid on all production duties, co-collaborator Soopy provides all vocal samples and each self-written track abounds with tunnels of broad, hypnotic loops and ambient samples whilst retaining hazy basslines and splashes of colour that have almost become a staple for post-dubstep producers, the world over. As a whole, the EP showcases the versatility of this young beat-maker who we're hoping to bring over to India for a show later this year. The mix is almost just a tease. Counting in at just over 16 minutes it runs through 5 original productions alongside a track from Flying Lotus, Madlib and Heems. A good choice of company and we just can't wait to hear more. "This mix is just a compilation of my own stuff as well as some stuff from some western artists that really influenced my style, especially in terms of the way I like to sample and arrange different sounds." - Sid Vashi For a tracklist and further info, head over here: http://www.thewildcity.com/EN/music.xhtml/article/3961-wild-city-055-motherland-tourism
Live at the Del Close Marathon, which took place over the last weekend here in New York City, we had the pleasure of talking to one of our comedic idols: Matt Walsh! One of the founding members of the Upright Citizens Brigade, Matt has been in a ton of films from Old School to The Hangover, he's helmed a number of series on Comedy Central and FX, and he's currently one of the leads in Armando Iannucci's HBO series, Veep. During a late night slot at UCB East, we talked with Matt about his childhood on the southside of Chicago and about his slew of terrible post-college jobs. It was a delight! And if you live in New York, come on out to the next Beginnings: Live at UCB East on Tuesday July 10th at 8pm. Our guests are Dapwell and Heems from Das Racist and stand-up Nick Vatterott (and a musical guest)!
On today's episode we talk to Jon Daly. Jon is an improviser and actor based in Los Angeles, who got his start on the influential improv team Mother at UCBNY in the early 2000s. Since then he's acted on TV in Human Giant and Happy Endings and on film in Mystery Team and the forthcoming The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. He performs regularly at UCBLA and also appears on Comedy Bang! Bang! as many different characters including Bill Cosby-Bukowski and Sappity Tappity, the drunk English rollerblading pine tree. A few weeks ago, Jon came over to the Manhattan Wrestling Team apartment, and on a rare Mark-less episode, Jon tries to convince Andy to relax and maybe try pot. We also learn about Jon's first conscious memories as a human being and get in deep about the mid-90s Pittsburgh music scene! #letsdoit! If you're at the Del Close Marathon, come see us interview Matt Wash of UCB and Veep at UCB East on Saturday morning at 1:15 am! And the next Beginnings: Live is at UCB East on July 10th at 8pm and we've got Dapwell and Heems from Das Racist and Nick Vatterott!
