The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Racist Suspect Joel Whitney. Classified as a White Man, Whitney is a Brooklyn, NY writer whose work has been featured in The New York Times, The Daily Beast, The Baffler, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and Boston Review to name a few. He's "a former features editor at Al Jazeera America and a founder and former editor-in-chief at Guernica." Gus originally hoped to speak with Whitney about his 2016 publication, Finks: How the CIA Tricked the World's Best Writers. I'm not quite sure what my original motivation was for exploring this text - could have been Rev. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple or Soundtrack to a Coup d'État. Anyway, by the time we got our calendars synchronized, Mr. Whitney had written another book, Flights: Radicals on the Run. Most of the featured subjects who had to flee oppression are Victims of White Supremacy like: Minister Malcolm X, Paul Robeson, Dr. Angela Davis, and Leonard Peltier - who recently benefited from a commuted sentence from departing President Biden. During the broadcast, Mr. Whitney repeated the tacky refrain that White people are also "held back" by Racism. He could only list two trifling ways that the System of White Supremacy holds him down. Whitney also engaged in another suspicious and common practice amongst Racist Suspects: Citing the work of Ibram X. Kendi, a Victim of White Supremacy, to confuse non-white people about what it means to be classified as White. #LorraineHansberry #FarceOnWashington #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

BUFFALO, NY- October 11, 2023 – A new research paper was published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 15, Issue 18, entitled, “Pathways explaining racial/ethnic and socio-economic disparities in dementia incidence: the UK Biobank study.” Pathways explaining racial/ethnic disparities in dementia risk are under-evaluated. In their new study, researchers May A. Beydoun, Hind A. Beydoun, Marie T. Fanelli-Kuczmarski, Jordan Weiss, Michael F. Georgescu, Osorio Meirelles, Donald M. Lyall, Michele K. Evans, and Alan B. Zonderman from the National Institute on Aging, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Stanford University, and the University of Glasgow examined those disparities and their related pathways among UK Biobank study respondents (50–74 y, N = 323,483; 3.6% non-White minorities) using a series of Cox proportional hazards and generalized structural equations models (GSEM). “The present study examines pathways that might explain racial, ethnic, and socio-economic disparities in AD or all-cause dementia in a large cohort study, the UK Biobank. Our study used several methodologies, including structural equation modeling coupled with survival analysis techniques to examine complex mediating effects between race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and dementia or AD [Alzheimer's disease] risk in a sex-specific manner focusing on lifestyle, biological and cognitive pathways. It is also an attempt at replicating a previous study conducted among US older adults [24].” Results: After ≤15 years, 5,491 all-cause dementia cases were diagnosed. Racial minority status (RACE_ETHN, Non-White vs. White) increased dementia risk by 24% (HR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.07–1.45, P = 0.005), an association attenuated by socio-economic status (SES), (HR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.96–1.31). Total race-dementia effect was mediated through both SES and Life's Essential 8 lifestyle sub-score (LE8LIFESTYLE), combining diet, smoking, physical activity, and sleep factors. SES was inversely related to dementia risk (HR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.67, 0.72, P < 0.001). Pathways explaining excess dementia risk among racial minorities included ‘RACE_ETHN(−) → SES(−) → DEMENTIA', ‘RACE_ETHN(−) → SES(−) → Poor cognitive performance, COGN(+) → DEMENTIA' and ‘RACE_ETHN(−) → SES(+) → LE8LIFESTYLE(−) → DEMENTIA'. “Pending future interventions, lifestyle factors including diet, smoking, physical activity, and sleep are crucial for reducing racial and socio-economic disparities in dementia.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.205058 Corresponding author - May A. The Context of White Supremacy Radio Program welcomes the return of non-white children. It's been basically four years of Covid-19 in the U.S. We spoke with non-white young people way back at the beginning of 2021 to get their perspective on the genesis of the health pandemic and how they were being impacted. Nearly 3 full years later, we'll check in with the little folks again. It seems some of them are no longer so "little." Since our last chat, numerous outlets have reported ghastly drops in math and English test scores. Racial disparities between White and black students were exacerbated by this madness. We'll ask how non-white people are feeling after all the Zoom learning and brawls over masking. We were able to speak with a number of non-white children about their access to mental health - or their lack of resources. A number of black children reported having trouble focusing because of the chaos and stress of the past 4 years. We'll see if their schools provided an adequate response for non-white students in the midst of a global health pandemic. #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Lorna Durrant. The Assistant Professor in the School of Education and the Program Lead for the Child and Family Studies degree at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, Dr. Durrant's research agenda includes "interracial" families, parent-child relationships, parenting education, and racial socialization. Born in St. Catherine's, Jamaica, we'll hear about her black parents's struggles with diabetes - which led to her father, Derrick Durrant, dying at the age of 56. #BlackMalePrivilege We'll discuss her fascinating research on White Fathers with non-white offspring and their alleged concerns about how their offspring will be mistreated in the System of White Supremacy. Dr. Durrant said she was motivated to explore this topic after seeing a Yahoo report with a White dad discussing his laments for his non-white son. We'll discuss the confusion around the term "biracial" and the history of White people raping black females and males. Dr. Durrant is gave a riveting explanation as to why she thinks people classified as White are more informed about White Supremacy/Racism. This led us both to re-think why a White father would be wishing for and lamenting the lack of resources for White dads with non-white children. White people display plenty initiative for practicing Racism and a wealth of other non-constructive activities. Why is it so hard for them to invest time creating resources to help their non-white children? The infamous 1967 Loving Supreme court case was mentioned also. Just as Dr. Durrant was exiting the program, Gus was physically assaulted by a random black male stranger while we were still live on air. Gus contacted security following the broadcast and made a police report. The Department of Education estimates that 45 million Americans have borrowed $1.6 trillion dollars in debt.Tens of millions of those borrowers are getting a break. President Joe Biden announced a plan last week to forgive some student loans. The plan will do more for some than it will for others. A breakdown of who holds the most student debt shows a clear disparity in how much of the financial burden has fallen on women and people of color. As higher education has become essential for upward social mobility, student loan debt has slowed that trajectory for many people of color. We discuss which parts of Biden's plan will benefit those who have taken on the most financial burden. We also discuss how less student debt can increase economic opportunities for people of color. Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to this podcast. The Context of White Supremacy host Gus T. Renegade shares his views after thirteen years of attempted counter-racist broadcasting. For duration of this time on the air, and with strict enforcement the past two years, Gus has always preferred speaking to individuals classified as White. Neely Fuller Jr.'s code book offers questions and suggestions for talking to Suspected Racists - the experts on White Supremacy. Our most recent broadcast with Dr. Shawn Lay is a marvelous illustration of why Gus T. loathes speaking with other Victims of Racism. With a self-professed "expert" White man on the broadcast, non-white listeners interrupted Gus T. and the White guests. Then a non-white listener dialed in with zero questions for Dr. Lay, who admitted to being in a #TragicArrangement He chastised Gus for not employing "sweetness" with White guests and accused me of sitting in the "seat of privilege." #Metaphors This spectator made it clear that he did not love his black brother Gus, he announced that he "identifies" with The Man. More Than Seven Words: George Carlin's American Dream On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, I visit with an old friend, Mrs. Amy Nelson Melle. Amy & I first met thirty-three years ago as sophomores in the Camelback High School Drama Department. The only two Chicanos (and - maybe two of less than seven or eight Non-White students), we bonded early with our mutual love of Soul Music, Cinema, and Stand-Up Comedy. We went to our first George Carlin concert at the CelelbrityTheatre in Phoenix, AZ sometime in the early-90s. Carlin has been a constant source of strength, intelligence, and hope in our lives. We're thrilled to sit down and discuss this iconic performer and the Judd Apatow/Michael Bonfiglio directed HBO Documentary, George Carlin's American Dream (2022), which premiered May 20th. Looking at Carlin's tumultuous life: compromised early career, counter-culture shift, rocketing success, drug and alcohol abuse, marital problems, dip in popularity, and late career resurgence which solidified his position as one of the greatest stand-ups of all time - all of this comes together to help us understand ourselves, the culture, and - ultimately - the species. This was a great time talking the past, the present, and the future with Carlin a constant presence and - to some degree - a contrarian guide. We invite you to sit in with us. It's a fun time between two old friends. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

Her new book, “God is a Black Woman,” seeks to recover the sacred, Black feminine, thanks to a pilgrimage she undertook in 2018 to visit some of the 450 Black Madonnas scattered throughout Europe. Christena Cleveland Three photos of Black Madonnas taken by Christena during her pilgrimage. Ancient and revered, the Black Madonnas are sources of strength and miracles. Joan of Arc prayed before the Black Madonna of Moulin. At the Black Madonna of Vichy, thousands of sick came to pray and be comforted. Cleveland. herself, found strength and healing during her pilgrimage. She writes in her book, “Imagination is theology. We can only believe what we can imagine. And our cultural landscape hasn't given us many tools to imagine a non-white, non-male God.” On this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas show, MPR News host Kerri Miller talked with Cleveland about her book, her pilgrimage and why the white, male depiction of God is both constricting and corrosive to seeing the divine in everyone. Guest: Christena Cleveland is a social psychologist, public theologian and the founder and director of the Center for Justice + Renewal. It only took a few decades, but colleges and universities are hiring more Black and brown presidents to lead their institutions. This week's episode digs into data Inside Higher Ed published last month showing a big upturn in the proportion of minority presidents and chancellors that colleges hired in the year and a half after the death of George Floyd. Better than one in three presidents hired from June 2020 through November 2021 were people of color, a full quarter were Black, and the proportion of Latinx presidents who were appointed roughly doubled from the previous 18 months. Two guests join to dissect the data, what they mean and how much they matter. Lorelle L. Espinosa is program director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, where she focuses on grantmaking that drives evidence-based change around diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM education. She formerly oversaw research on the college presidency and other topics at the American Council on Education. Eddie R. Cole, associate professor of higher education and history at the University of California, Los Angeles, offers some context about the current moment based on his study of the civil rights era, when colleges also sought to diversify their leadership (for a while).
