From The Archive -  Online advertising can feel like navigating a dense forest without a map—especially for businesses trying to sell nationally without the resources of big-name competitors. That's why I invited Krystal Covington,  to share her expertise. Originally released in September 2022, Krystal's tips are still relevant today.  Together, we explored how businesses can use geo-targeting and smart collaborations to stretch their advertising dollars further and stand out in targeted markets. Here are the highlights of our conversation: Focus Your Efforts With Geo-Targeting Even for businesses that can sell anywhere, narrowing the focus to specific regions can make a big impact. Tools like Google Trends help identify where demand is strongest, allowing companies to allocate their budget effectively. For instance, a $500 geo-targeted ad campaign in high-interest areas can yield better results than a $3,000 national campaign competing against industry giants. Collaborations and Partnerships Pay Off Building "power partnerships" with complementary businesses can expand your reach without blowing your budget. From co-branded sweepstakes to shared promotions, partnerships allow you to tap into each other's audiences and grow your contact lists while creating mutual value. Creative Strategies for Audience Growth Krystal shared her experience using tools like Gleam.io to run contests that reward participants for actions like visiting websites, following social media accounts, or joining email lists. This approach not only engages audiences but also helps both partners grow their visibility in meaningful, measurable ways. Adapt These Strategies Locally or Nationally Whether you're targeting your hometown or a far-off market like Baltimore, the principles are the same. Find either local partners in your target area or collaborate with nearby businesses to enter new regions together.

Krystal was on my Extraordinary Women Connect stage last Fall, and I'm on a panel at Krystal's Women of Denver Quarterly Networking party this coming Saturday evening, which I understand brings 150 women together in a single evening. And then I speak at her monthly Women of Denver meeting on June 21 on "The Brand of You: Igniting Your Presence, Purpose and Profile as a Change Maker." You can learn more about both of these events here. Come join us - it would be great to see you there! Denver is such a happening place for female entrepreneurs with several growing and collaborative groups like Women of Denver, my own Extraordinary Women Connect, The Dames, eWoman Network Denver, FemCity Denver and others. I'm in awe of all the collaboration and ways Denver women entrepreneurs are coming together to uplift one another! It's a pretty cool energy of incubation and support. As a PR and branding expert, Krystal has a strong passion and belief that now is the time for women to take the lead! We dig into how women can make an impact in the world, Krystal expressed, "Go speak it. Put yourself out there right. Put it in words." In our interview, she drops all kinds of tips on getting into the media, including how important it is to build a story that links your philosophies and ideas to what is going on in the world right now - make it newsworthy. She tell us "That's what will get you interviews!" She shares her story of starting Women of Denver in 2014, just jumping in and doing it! As she shares in the interview, "I had to let go of the idea that THEY had all the answers for me, and that only I had the answers for me." She's a risk taker, a doer and a bright and shiny young star in the Denver community. And she's so full of wisdom! Here are a few of her insights: When you are doing the things that feel good, time feels different, you experience life with more fullness, you are just energized Believe in the changes that you want to see happen Life goes in waves, just like sounds and just like water. Krystal Covington Show Notes Krystal Covington is CEO & Founder of Women of Denver, a social enterprise association that helps professional women develop their business skills, build confidence, and earn their worth as business leaders. The organization launched in 2014, and has hundreds of active members. Krystal has presented a TEDx Talk, contributes to Forbes, and has been featured in numerous media outlets, including the Denver Business Journal. Most passionate about Today, I’m most passionate about the membership organization that I lead that is called Women of Denver. When I started it, I called it, for quite a while, a passion project because I didn’t want to call it ‘work’. I moved to Denver, Colorado and was inspired to create a network for myself because I was lonely, I needed connections, and I wanted it to be the right kind of people. People that were passionate, career driven, open, and looking to create authentic and close relationships. It’s interesting because I’m shy and like to be on my own, but even people that like to be alone need connections. I was able to build that and pretty fast, I felt there was a need for that among other people and it started to get bigger and bigger until I turned it into a full fledged organization with membership dues, meetings, and a mission and we have been growing it since and lately we launched our magazine… The future is very bright and I see so much more, like the magazine and an app that we are going to launch. Who are the community’s members? The people that we attract to Women of Denver are women that want to make an impact, help others, and care about making a difference in the world and the community. Krystal’s best advice about approaching customers I think the most important thing is continue to keep your customers in the loop of everything you are doing, everything that you plan, and everything you ask them. Test out new things and don’t be afraid to fail. I failed a few times. Your customers can tell you what they want and you should pay attention to what they say and also what they do and how they act. When I started, I did a prelaunch. First, I asked people, and then I told them that I created what you said you want, are you with me? And I asked them to buy a full year membership to let me know that they were with me, and they did. I had a goal to how many people I need to sign in order to decide to open it up. And I keep asking before any new move or thing that I want to start or change, before I started to invest in that idea. Biggest failure with a customer I had a couple of failures that I can share. With Women of Denver in the very early days, I had an expectation that we need a lot of events right away, and we had 4-5 events in a month but we didn’t have a large number of members, so people got disappointed and didn’t get what they wanted out of the events, and the number of members was going down then, because it looked like we weren’t successful. So, I lowered the number of events, and people that came saw more people and the numbers of members started to grow. And it happened because I thought people wanted something they didn’t really want, and I didn’t understand. As soon as I figured it out, I was able to redirect. Earlier, I had an eBay business and I went bankrupt. It was the very early days of eBay; there was these popup stores, and I had a business for wigs, mainly for people that lost their hair because of cancer or disease, and also many other people, as well as celebs, bought the wigs and were very happy with them. I bought the wigs in China and had pretty good margins, but I didn’t realize that things were changing and that prices were going down and people started to buy directly from China. We had to sell the wigs in a loss, my business crashed, and we went bankrupt. Biggest success due to the right customer approach I think that the moment I...

Do you want to get better at public relations? Perhaps grab some media opportunities? In this episode, Krystal Covington shares some great PR tips for small businesses. About Krystal Covington Krystal Covington helps businesses by developing strategic marketing and PR plans to reach new audiences. She currently lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband. We got to know Krystal through Christopher Fous, from Woobamboo, a recent podcast guest. Krystal made it all happen and as we learn – incredibly – that was Christopher's first podcast – if you are still to listen to it, do, he is inspirational. We were so impressed with Krystal, we wanted her to join us as a guest too. How to master public relations with Krystal Covington Krystal is a Networking Guru too Krystal is an off the charts introvert! She never believed she would do networking because of it. She has those moments when she asks herself “am I really doing this?”. Krystal founded Women of Denver. Women teach workshops and present different programmes for other members. Krystal rarely does the speaking, but she does greet everyone when they arrive. She battles her natural shyness to talk to strangers. Every week. The big issue Krystal has had with traditional networking is that she doesn't have a place there. She would walk in, without anything to say, except ‘hey, what do you do?'. Running her own group, she has natural authority, and members want to talk to her naturally because she founded the group. That makes it easier for Krystal to start a conversation. It gives her talking points. Are you extrovert or introvert? Go to https://www.16personalities.com It's a fun site and the shock truth about Graham is that he is seen by them as: DEBATER (ENTP-A) “Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of 'crack-pot' than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost.” Mind = 76% Extraverted Energy = 67% Intuitive Nature = 57% Thinking Tactics = 53% Prospecting Identity = 71% Assertive Both Kevin and Krystal are INT-J – an ARCHITECT – imaginative and strategic thinkers, with a plan for everything! Women of Denver Krystal lives in the city of Denver. It's 70 degrees in November! Krystal founded Women of Denver to create professional women friends. She was too awkward at other's event – prompted by her husband, she created a ‘deep topic' group – all about limiting beliefs. That was comfortable for Krystal. There were 5 people at the first event. The most Krystal ever had with the close-knit groups was 10. Now Women in Denver has 1,000 members! A core group of 200 or so that consistently meet. That really is a success. They were featured in their local business journal. Krystal's image was next to Donald Trump's on the journal. Krystal's was smaller, but hey. Ted Talks, a step into Public Relations On her Ted Talk, she couldn't even see the crowd. She it for yourself… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAqStwFF6ZE Krystal shared a story in the Ted Talk, about how her body reacted to being in a stressful situation, like networking. She found herself breaking out in “stinky stress sweat”! The sweat would pour down! Public Relations Krystal fell into public relations. Someone challenged her to get local TV coverage for an event. She was working for a small 200 employee company. Someone said, we have this party tomorrow and as the marketer, I would have thought you'd have the TV people covering the event! Krystal, said, oh, but I didn't think that was an expectation. Her colleague said, yes, but it doesn't look like you have that capability! Red rag, right? So, Krystal looked up Google search “how do you get news to come out?” and it said just tell the news about your event! She filled in the contact form on the TV news website.

It wasn’t until she found the support of a networking group that she was able to become comfortable asking for her true value. The Wake Up Call Krystal started a free networking group named “Women of Denver.” When she decided to make it a subscription based group, she was overwhelmed with anxiety from the responsibility of it all. Her wake up call came when she realized she needed to build her own confidence before she could lead the group using her full potential.
