Joining us today is Jane Jansen, a Natural & Holistic Practitioner at The Tree of Life Wellness Center in Massachusetts. Jane has the unique perspective as a medical professional who, prior to becoming a natural & holistic practitioner, spent years in Radiology and Ultrasound doing research and performing tests on patients with varying types of health problems. Jane joins us today to discuss why probiotics are important at all stages of our lives. Our ancestors tended not to have modern-day 21st Century digestive issues because they ingested naturally fermented foods that, as we know today, produced probiotics & postbiotics. The challenge in today's “fast-food & processed food” world is that we do not eat a lot of naturally fermented foods like our ancestors. Our ancestors, from early times to the early 1900's, ingested more fruits and vegetables, as well as other natural foods that had fermented overtime preserving their food supply. For instance, milk could become yogurt or buttermilk; vegetables could become sauerkraut, pickles, or kimchee. Soybeans could become miso, tofu, or tempeh. By-the-way, we can still use these foods to incorporate probiotics from food naturally into our diets. But our modern food industry is largely based on a fast-food culture and processed foods which are lacking in healthful fermentation of fruits and vegetables which naturally produce probiotics and more importantly, postbiotics. Postbiotic metabolites is the term that refers to the wide range of health-regulating compounds that the good bacteria produce and secrete in the intestinal tract (primarily in the colon) when they digest and ferment the fiber content in the foods we eat. Everyone is born with a miniature microbiome (eco system) inside the intestines. This ecosystem is populated by trillions of microscopic organisms which include over a thousand species of bacteria, as well as viruses, fungi, and parasites. Most are good, some are bad.As you grow, your gut microbiome begins to diversify into many different types of microbial species. This eco system affects the whole body by controlling the digestion of food, immune system regulation, central nervous system, brain health and other bodily functions as well as keeping guard against harmful invaders.Dr. Ohhira's Probiotics are available at Natural Grocers, Sprouts, and other natural health retailers across the U.S. Also available online. Let's set the stage and talk about Good Digestion vs. Bad…To understand what goes wrong with digestion, it is important to understand how it works. As food mixed with saliva enters the stomach, it is broken down into small particles by stomach acid, then by enzymes produced by the pancreas and bile produced by the liver. “Good” bacteria (flora) in the small intestine complete the job of breaking down nutrients so that they can be absorbed. Indigestible parts of food, such as fiber, and other waste products are pushed into the colon where they remain until eliminated. It also serves as a barrier to prevent undigested food, large molecules and foreign substances, such as harmful bacteria and yeast, from getting through. When the lining of the small intestine becomes irritated and inflamed, it is unable to do its job properly.  As a result, bacteria and undigested food “leak” into the bloodstream.  Officially this is called increased intestinal permeability, but more often the problem is called leaky gut syndrome.Learn more about Dr. Mark Stengler, NMDLearn more about The Holistic Guide to Gut HealthEmerald Labs Leaky Gut Health can be found at Sprouts, Natural Grocers, and other Natural Health retailers nationwide.Buy direct and  get 20% off at Emeraldlabs.com when using the code: Forever

We shared about fluoride in the water supply, ways to support oral care, and ended with respiratory tips for the cold months ahead. Our guest today is our good friend, Nathan Jones.  It has been over 2 decades now (2000) since he founded Xlear, Inc., the xylitol-product based company whose revolutionary all-natural approach to upper respiratory and oral health has improved the quality of life for people around the globe. Most allergens enter the body through the nose, although the mouth and eyes are also common entry points. Keeping these gateways to the body clean is of utmost importance during allergy season if you want to reduce symptoms and not rely on antihistamines. There are other products out there, such as Xlear Nasal Spray with xylitol, which can help keep the nasal passage clean and clear of seasonal allergies, all without the negative side effects that antihistamines can cause. The addition of xylitol allows Xlear to be hypertonic, without causing the uncomfortable burning sensation that accompanies traditional saline nasal sprays. This hypertonicity means that more moisture is being pulled into the nose to help wash out contaminants and ensure the nose and sinuses are hydratedIf you're on the lookout for an antihistamine-free remedy to your allergies this season, give Xlear a try.Xlear Nasal Products are available at Walgreens, CVS, Vitamin Shoppe, Rite Aid, Target, Kroger, Publix, Sprouts, Natural Grocers and most natural products retailers nationwide. We have a great episode planned for you today and will cover “The Holidays” & Our Digestion.Joining us today is Naturopathic Practitioner, Jane Jansen of the Tree of Life Wellness Center in Massachusetts. Jane has the unique perspective as a medical professional who, prior to becoming a naturopathic practitioner, spent years in Radiology and Ultrasound doing research and performing tests on patients with varying types of health problems. We look forward all year to family traditions enjoying our favorite recipes for food, beverages and treats during the holidays. Traveling to see friends and family or hosting special events. But during the holidays our digestive systems can take a beating. But let's be real, most of the daily habits that keep our digestion healthy during the year, get put on hold during the holidays. Over-indulging, staying up late, and stress physically and emotionally is part of most holidays as there are so many things to do!So, what do practitioners recommend to keep our digestive system balanced, yet still be able to enjoy the rich treats this holiday season?According to Jane Jahnsen, a Naturopathic practitioner, I often advise my patients to practice moderation and balance their holiday food and drink choices, On the actual holiday don't worry about enjoying yourself, unless you have specific health concerns that your doctor says otherwise. But don't give yourself excuses to overindulge every day leading up to or every day after the holiday. That includes food, treats, and beverages. Be mindful of becoming over stressed, or not sleeping well too. Your body talks to you all the time, listening to it and it will tell you when you, and your microbiome, are out of balance.Let's remind everyone that Dr. Ohhira's Probiotics are available at Natural Grocers, Sprouts, Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods, and other natural health retailers across the U.S. Also available online.Visit www.essentialformulas.com for a retailer near you.Learn more about Jane

Mayor Mike Johnston just hit his goal of getting 2,000 people off the streets before the end of the year. However, the housing fight is far from over — he's also been hard at work pushing Ballot Issue 2R, which, if passed, would increase the city's sales tax to fund a new affordable housing plan. But with Mile High residents already struggling with the cost of living, is a regressive tax really the answer? The mayor joins host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi for his regular check-in to make his case for higher taxes. Plus, Mayor Mike wades into the minimum wage debate, explains why he thinks adding more police officers to the force will mean fewer people of color being incarcerated, and answers listener questions about crime on Colfax and dangerous drivers.  Are you going to vote for Mayor Johnston's sales tax hike to fund affordable housing? Prebiotics, Probiotics, & Postbiotics and their Importance to health.Your digestive gut (intestinal tract) is the largest immune system organ, containing up to 80% of your body's immune cells. Therefore, the healthier your digestive system the healthier you generally are and vice versa. Factors like diet, exercise, genes, trauma, illness, lifestyle, medications, infections, and mental health all can influence the state of your gut microbiome. Prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics all play an important role in maintaining a microbiome, considered essential to the human body.Everyone is born with a miniature microbiome (eco system) inside the intestines. This ecosystem is populated by trillions of microscopic organisms which include over a thousand species of bacteria, as well as viruses, fungi, and parasites. Most are good, some are bad.According to the Mayo Clinic, “Probiotics are foods or supplements that contain live microorganisms intended to maintain or improve the good bacteria (microflora) in the body. Prebiotics are foods (typically high-fiber foods) that act as food for human microflora.” Postbiotics are healthy by-products after the probiotic strains digest the prebiotics. Joining us today is Naturopathic Practitioner, Jane Jansen of the Tree of Life Wellness Center in Massachusetts. Guest: Nate Jones CEO & Founder of Xlear, INC.Nate Jones founded Xlear, Inc. in 2000 to improve lives by making Xlear Nasal Spray commercially available and spreading the message of proactive health. Once you understand that allergy symptoms are simply your immune system fighting off allergens, you can understand that there are ways to prevent and ease symptoms other than taking an over-the-counter medication. Most allergens enter the body through the nose, although the mouth and eyes are also common entry points. Keeping these gateways to the body clean is of utmost importance during allergy season if you want to reduce symptoms and not rely on antihistamines. There are other products out there, such as Xlear Nasal Spray with xylitol, which can help keep the nasal passage clean and clear of seasonal allergens, all without the negative side effects that antihistamines can cause. The addition of xylitol allows Xlear to be hypertonic, without causing the uncomfortable burning sensation that accompanies traditional saline nasal sprays. This hypertonicity means that more moisture is being pulled into the nose to help wash out contaminants and ensure the nose and sinuses are hydratedIf you're on the lookout for an antihistamine-free remedy to your allergies this season, give Xlear a try.Learn more about Xlear and the Research Xlear Nasal Products are available at Walgreens, CVS, Vitamin Shoppe, Rite Aid, Target, Kroger, Publix, Sprouts, Natural Grocers and most natural products retailers nationwide. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Ep108- 80 farms, 6000+ stores in 7 Years - Tim of Maple Hill Creamery

Tim Joseph had no farming experience. He had never even milked a cow. In 2004, he received a fast education when sixty-four cows stepped off the trailers onto his land. Thrown into the fire, Tim and his wife Laura started selling milk while Tim worked a full-time corporate job from home. In 2009, they went "all in", opened a storefront and transitioned to making dairy products, like yogurt and cheese. And the company started to grow.. Over a two-year span from 2011-2013, Maple Hill Creamery went from being on shelf in about 600 stores—mostly independents in the Northeast—to over 6,000 stores, including Whole Foods Market, Sprouts, Target, Walmart, Ahold, Safeway, Natural Grocers, EarthFare, and many others. Tim is also committed to building the Maple Hill Milkshed, the community of nearly eighty 100% grass-fed dairy farms in New York. A fun, incredible success story. I had a lot of questions for Tim: Working from home and dairy farming on the side, how did you manage your time? How did you make the transition from conventional dairy to organic grass-fed dairy? How did you manage the fear of stepping out and doing something different? What's a day like on the farm? Cow milking 101? Why does grass fed dairy make sense? What was the initial response to "grass fed dairy? How did you manage growth from 600 to 6000 stores? What were the keys to such rapid growth? How do you view trade shows from a P/L perspective? How is yogurt made? What about Greek yogurt? When is it time to go "all-in" with your food startup? What questions do you need to ask yourself? Will you hire robots to milk cows? (note: this is already happening!) Selected links from the show: Maple Hill Creamery Pennsylvania Certified Organic This is Maple Hill
