fWotD Episode 2399: Revolutionary Girl Utena Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Wednesday, 29 November 2023 is Revolutionary Girl Utena.Revolutionary Girl Utena (Japanese: 少女革命ウテナ, Hepburn: Shōjo Kakumei Utena) is a Japanese anime television series created by Be-Papas, a production group formed by director Kunihiko Ikuhara and composed of himself, Chiho Saito, Shinya Hasegawa, Yōji Enokido, and Yūichirō Oguro. The series was produced by J. C. Staff, and originally aired on TV Tokyo from April to December 1997. Revolutionary Girl Utena follows Utena Tenjou, a teenaged girl drawn into a sword dueling tournament to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the "Rose Bride" who possesses the "power to revolutionize the world".Ikuhara was a director on the television anime adaptation of Sailor Moon at Toei Animation in the 1990s; after growing frustrated by the lack of creative control in directing an adapted work, he departed the company in 1995 to create an original series. While he initially conceived of Utena as a mainstream shōjo (girls' anime and manga) series aimed at capitalizing on the commercial success of Sailor Moon, the direction of the series shifted dramatically during production towards an avant-garde and surrealist tone. The series has been described as a deconstruction and subversion of fairy tales and the magical girl genre of shōjo manga, making heavy use of allegory and symbolism to comment on themes of gender, sexuality, and coming-of-age. Its visual and narrative style is characterized by a sense of theatrical presentation and staging, drawing inspiration from the all-female Japanese theater troupe the Takarazuka Revue, as well as the experimental theater of Shūji Terayama, whose frequent collaborator J. A. Seazer created the songs featured in the series.Revolutionary Girl Utena has been the subject of both domestic and international critical acclaim, and has received many accolades. It has been praised for its treatment of LGBT themes and subject material, and has influenced subsequent animated works. A manga adaptation of Utena written and illustrated Saito was developed contemporaneously with the anime series, and was serialized in the manga magazine Ciao beginning in 1996. In 1999, Be-Papas produced the film Adolescence of Utena as a follow-up to the television anime series. The series has had several iterations of physical release, including a remaster overseen by Ikuhara in 2008. In North America, Utena was initially distributed by Central Park Media starting in 1998; the license for the series has been held by Crunchyroll since its 2023 acquisition of Right Stuf and its subsidiary Nozomi Entertainment, which acquired the license for Utena in 2010.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:24 UTC on Wednesday, 29 November 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Revolutionary Girl Utena on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joey Neural.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of the most unique visions of animation and storytelling I've seen in recent memory. Kunihiko Ikuhara was already riding high from his success as the Series Director of Sailor Moon, but he left it all behind to gamble on a vision. The Treehouse Anime Club pulls back the curtain on early days of Utena's production as well as the creative tensions present in the group bringing her world to life. Ikuhara took his team, and ultimately his audience, along for a crazy-ass emotional roller coaster experience that remains today as a crowning achievement in experimental storytelling. It should be watched with the same care you'd use watching Utena. In the news, our hearts go out to the victims of the tragedy at Kyoto Animation, CATS is back, and Rym may test the waters of Fire Force despite how we may have JUDGED it. Mmmm, cartoons! They are the best. So, you may have heard about this Korra cartoon THING that just had it’s second season opener and you may wonder if you should go back and catch the first season. But hey, if you ARE wondering that, well we have the answer for you! Short answer: Yes, of course you should. We even did an OSMcast all about it. Long answer: You listen to our latest episode that tells you all about it. That’s right here. You can just click about or download it or maybe you have done one of those things. In that case you should have already begun watching the first season. If you haven’t, I guess just  listen to the podcast again. TL;DR: This episode of the OSMcast is about The Legend of Korra: Book One, Air. It’s a pretty cool cartoon made by  Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino and a sequel to Avatar: the Last Aibender. You can go listen to us yap on about how cool we think it is. OSMnotes Firstly, here’s a link to the Blu-ray of the first season. Here’s a link to the DVD version. Secondly, ACTUAL SHOW NOTES?! Time Cues, as told to Basil by way of Winamp We start the OSMcast!ing – 0:00 AWA Talk – 6:26 MOMENTS OF OSM – 13:00 Hobonichi Planner – 13:11 Saints Row IV – 21:29 Star Trek: the Next Generation – 25:20 Milk Tea – 30:15 Gatchaman Crowds – 34:00 Star Driver: The Movie – 36:18 The Legend of Korra: Book One, Air – 37:00 Spoilers for The Legend of Korra: Book One, Air – 81:45 OSMs Out of OSM – 111:00 Yeah buddy! Those sure are some TIME CUES. Now how about  some PANEL CUES?! Panel Cues for Anime Weekend Atlanta, as told to Basil by way of AWA unless things change which they totally can! Manga You Need to Buy Right Now! (9/27/13 3:30 PM-4:30 PM | CGC – 104): Manga, the world of Japanese comics. There used to be an absolute ton of these things on the market, but times are changing… and not for the better. However, there are still a great many series and one shots that are being published today. And we’re going to tell you all about them! Petals and Penguins: The Work of Kunihiko Ikuhara (9/28/13 5:00 PM-6:00 PM | CGC – 106): The creator and director of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Kunihiko Ikuhara is a man who loves imagery. And metaphor. And messing with your mind. His works make you think, make you feel, and usually not in the ways you’re probably meant to when you started your day. But yet, we always keep coming back for more. From his start in the anime adaption of Sailor Moon, to Penguindrum and beyond, we look into the twisted body of work that has defined Kunihiko Ikuhara. Getting Your Anime Groove Back (9/29/13 11:00 AM-12:00 PM | CGC – 104): Anime burn out happens all the time. Sometimes life gets in the way and people lose interest in keeping up with the latest shows and news. This panel looks at a few shows that may rekindle that anime fan deep inside that just wants to be free again. The Weird Side of Go Nagai (9/29/13 2:30 PM-3:30 PM | CGC – 106): While Go Nagai is easily one of the most prolific and influential anime and manga creators of our time, not everyone knows his stranger side. Sure, some anime fans may know the popular stuff like Cutie Honey or Mazinger Z, but what about Aztechkaiser; a tokusatsu pro-wrestling live action show where the hero beats his enemies by turning into animation? Now that’s weird! Boy that sure was a whole lot of cues!

Thanks a bunch for coming back to anime, Kunihiko Ikuhara. We appreciate it. In the latest, greatest, and most Fabulous Max episode of the OSMcast_!_ to date, we talk about all sorts of things. But by far the most important thing we talk about in this episode is all about Kunihiko Ikuhara’s (with studio Brain’s Base) latest project, Penguindrum. Or as the cool kids liked to call it, Mawaru Penguindrum. And we talk about it. A lot! You might even say we liked the show, or something. But probably not. It’s not like this show is over two hours long. Why would we ever do that?! Spoilers: You can totally say we like the show. OSMnotes As we mentioned during the podcast, Sentai Filmworks has released the show on Blu-ray and DVD and Amazon has it for $45-$35 a set at the moment. Which is a pretty awesome deal, befitting of an awesome show. Set 1 on Blu-ray | Set 2 on Blu-ray | Set 1 on DVD | Set 2 on DVD Unleash your walle- I’m sorry I can’t go through with that pun. but please check out Shaintar: Legends Unleashed. It’s a good time. In other news, if you like tabletop role-playing games, fantasy, and portraying awesome characters in a fantasy setting tabletop role-playing experiences, boy do we have a link for you! Sean Patrick Fannon’s magnum opus, Shaintar: Legends Unleashed, is being kickstarted right this very second and you still have time to give him your cash by way of Amazon Payments. Basil has called Shaintar “It’s like Lord of the Rings meets Die Hard,” and it’s about as awesome as it sounds. It uses Savage Worlds as the tabletop system, which is a pretty great one. The system was born from Deadlands, which was this awesome horror-western game. As it turns out, it’s just as good for epic high fantasy. You should check it out! Speaking of awesome tabletop games, Shadowrun 5th Edition is hitting soon and we are so hyped you have no idea. Also the Shadowrun Returns PC game is imminent and that could destroy us. BUT WORRY NOT. Because, we already have the next episode recorded! So be back in a week after next as we talk about space aliens and baseball.
