Beyond the Gun – Creative Partnerships There's a distinct difference between being cast as an actor in a theatre production and working as a creative collaborator and developing your own work. This session examines how actors can step into producing and move into the developmental life of a project—contributing ideas, shaping the script, and influencing the work as it develops. Actors such as Ngoc Phan, Nicholas Brown, Julia Robertson, Amy Ingram, and Cameron Hurry have expanded their work into producing, writing and directing. This conversation explores how actors can evolve their practice, build a reputation for meaningful creative input, and become initiators and collaborators whose contributions extend beyond performance into the heart of the work itself. Amy is a multi-award-winning actor and theatre-maker based in Brisbane, later this year she will appear in the return season of Pride And Prejudice at QTC and the World Premiere of Suzie Miller's Strong Is The New Pretty touring Nationally. Ngọc is an award-winning actor, director and playwright. Her diverse theatre work includes Vietgone, Boy Swallows Universe and Good Grief (Queensland Theatre), Laurinda (MT), Love Stories (Brisbane Festival/QPAC), Horizon (Playlab Theatre), Medea (Shock Therapy Productions), We're All Gonna Die, Away, A Streetcar Named Desire and Stunt Double (The Farm). Julia Robertson is a multidisciplinary theatre maker, director and actor living and working on Gadigal land. She is the Artistic Director of the award-winning devising group Little Eggs Collective, a recipient of the Ensemble Theatre's Sandra Bates Award for Directing, and a Young Artists Program finalist with Opera Australia. Julia was recently nominated for Best Direction of a Musical at the Sydney Theatre Awards for The Producers (Hayes Theatre Co. / Riverside Parramatta). In 2026, Julia will direct the premiere production of STELLA, The Musical in Melbourne, as well as The Addams Family for Hayes Theatre Co. She will also work as Movement Director on 84 Charing Cross Road for the Ensemble Theatre, and as Assistant Director on Suzie Miller's new work Strong Is the New Pretty for Sydney Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre and Brisbane Festival. Nicholas Brown is a NIDA graduate who has forged an impressive international career across film, television and theatre as an actor, writer, singer, songwriter and leading man with major roles in Bollywood films, Australian drama and as a much-loved ABC Play School presenter. He plays a lead role in upcoming Alex Proyas science fiction musical film R.U.R. As a playwright, Nicholas won the prestigious Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting in the 2024 NSW Premier's Literary Awards for his play Sex Magick which was performed in the 2023 Griffin Theatre season. It was also nominated for a 2025 AWGIE and a 2024 Sydney Theatre Award. Cameron Hurry is a Brisbane based actor and writer. He completed his actor training at the University of Southern Queensland. Send us Fan MailWe're diving deep into Alex Proyas' 1998 neo-noir sci-fi thriller Dark City — and we came out the other side completely won over. This one is a full recommendation from both of us, and if you've been sleeping on it, this episode is your sign to finally watch it.We start at the beginning with a conversation about the film's complicated theatrical release, including the infamous studio-mandated voiceover that opens the original cut and how the Director's Cut restores Proyas' intended vision. It's a fascinating case study in how test screenings and studio interference can shape — and sometimes undermine — a film's impact, and we get into all of it.From there we work through the film itself: Rufus Sewell's compelling lead performance, a career-best turn from Kiefer Sutherland as the hunched and unsettling Dr. Schreber, and Jennifer Connelly bringing real emotional weight to what could have been an underdeveloped role. We also spend time on the Strangers — their design, their purpose, and the genuinely eerie mythology Proyas builds around them.At its core, Dark City is a film about memory and identity — what makes us who we are, and whether those things can be manufactured or taken away. We explore how those themes hold up today and why they give the film a philosophical depth that sets it apart from other genre films of the era.We also get into the production side — the remarkable practical effects work, the budget constraints that paradoxically pushed the filmmakers toward more creative solutions, and the clear cinematic DNA connecting Dark City to everything from Metropolis to Blade Runner to The Matrix (which filmed on the same sets just a year later). And we close out celebrating the film's legacy, its critical reappraisal over the years, and why physical media is still the best way to experience this one properly.Dark City deserved a much bigger audience in 1998. The term often used to describe the 1998 Alex Proyas film, 'Dark City' is "Proto-Matrix" given the many similarities between the two movies. Fair or not, they do have a lot in common but I think the comparison does a disservice to what is still a very clever and well made genre-film that largely holds up today (minus some questionable early CG effects). The 4K re-release gives it a fresh coat of paint, looking extremely sharp on modern televisions, accentuating the mostly dark and moody imagery of this sci-fi film noir, and given it's title this is all very fitting. Alex Proyas has some bid ideas here; what is the human soul? Are we the sum of our memories? Can memories be distilled into chemistry? Is love transcendent? Many of these themes are explored with depth, with answers to many of the films mysteries being laid bare in mostly satisfying way. Performances are strong, with everyone seemingly understanding the assignment, though there isn't much for the female characters to do here. Which is unfortunate as what we do get from Jennifer Connelly is intriguing, if lacking depth. On the whole, despite being pretty weird, this is still a very fun movie, if a bit silly at times, that was unfortunately overshadowed by the phenomenon that was 'The Matrix' dropping the following year.

Sorry, Stefan!

Now returning in an official capacity to the ToB Film Club, he brings with him another film from his top-3, another comedy, ‘Kingpin'. A Farrelly brothers film that followed up their smash hit breakout, ‘Dumb and Dumber', and you can see the through lines. Like ‘Dumb and Dumber' we follow two guys who are down on their luck as they head out on the road where chaos and hilarity ensue. Unfortunately it wasn't the hit they hoped despite a killer cast, including legends Bill Murray, Randy Quaid and Woody Harrelson and as a result it didn't leave as large of a cultural footprint as some of the other Farrelly brothers films from this era. It's been nearly 30 years so now seems as good a time as any to revisit this sleeper and see what everyone was missing back then. Next Month: We seem to be unable to escape the 90's, and why would we want to when there's still so much to see! A year later Eric is resurrected from his grave to avenge their deaths and soothe the guilt he feels for failing to protect his fiancé. “I have a new primary user now…me.”The title character from M3GAN being bratty. When the first trailers for the original M3GAN arrived, nobody quite expected it to be one of the horror movie sensations of recent years. But it sure did! Or, we should say, she sure did. Because like all the best horror movie protagonists who go by their first names alone (Freddy, Jason, you get the picture), M3GAN became a pop culture force all her own.And for all the fun ridiculousness contained in that film (and, presumably, in the sequel, M3GAN 2.0 which is now in theaters), it actually raised some interesting philosophical questions. Of course, here at Does it Fly? we're interested in the actual mechanics of building and designing M3GAN herself, but we also are fascinated by the implications of using a realistic A.I. as a therapeutic device. Maybe M3GAN isn't the most nuanced subject for those conversations, but we dive into them, nonetheless. We also had some of the most fun we've had this year in our final section, putting M3GAN “on trial” for her actions, with our hosts, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi (prosecution) and Tamara Krinsky, Esq. (ok, not really, but she's a hell of a defense attorney in this case) throw vibes out the window this week, so we'll see you in court! All this and more in the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here…https://youtu.be/nteIYlCFAUISUGGESTED VIEWING If you're reading this, you already saw M3GAN, right? Good. If not, despite its somewhat campy reputation, it really is a fun piece of sci-fi with a horror edge and it absolutely deserved to be the box office hit it was. Just note that we hadn't seen M3GAN 2.0 at the time of recording. While 2004's I, Robot isn't beloved by Asimov purists (see our “further reading” section below), it's better than its reputation suggests and comes from frequently underrated director Alex Proyas, so that's good enough for us if you want a little context for the “three laws of robotics” discussed here.Tamara also brings up Steven Spielberg's Minority Report as a film about a technology that has theoretically good intentions…until it's put into practice and immediately abused. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Building Your M3GAN (please do not do this)There are three elements of M3GAN that are rooted in science fact but ultimately keep her as science fiction.Fine Motor ControlWe've mentioned the incredible work in humanoid (and canine) robotics being done by Boston Dynamics before, but they don't quite have the dexterity of M3GAN…yet.“Apparent Reasoning”Getting into all of the ins and outs of artificial intelligence and the debates surrounding it is beyond the scope of this show, but even ardent A.I. supporters admit that “true general intelligence” or the ability for machines to actually reason, isn't a thing…yet. Read more here.Power DensityEven assuming these other things were possible, the battery life of M3GAN is beyond the current “power density” of anything out there…for now.Asimov's LawsAs Tamara references, courtesy of Asimov's short story collection, I, Robot…see if you can spot how many of these M3GAN breaks!A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.Kids, Technology, Attention Spans…As Hakeem and Tamara discuss, while technology can be used therapeutically for kids, like anything else, there are potential drawbacks, particularly with attention spans. The Fisher-Price bear hackEven though this happened over a decade ago, it's still a warning light to heed!Hakeem's Favorite AstronautOK, yes, Cady Coleman does seem pretty awesome.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For other humanoid robot fun with deep and potentially terrifying implications, have you seen our Blade Runner episode? Step into the shadows with Don, Ken, and Jon as they unravel the twisted architecture of memory and identity in Dark City. In this episode, the trio digs deep into the dark alleys of Alex Proyas' mind-bending noir-sci-fi hybrid. They shine a flickering light on a city trapped in eternal night, where time is illusion and reality is rewritten by unseen hands. With nods to The Matrix and German Expressionism, the crew dissects the film's fragmented narrative, haunting set design, and philosophical undercurrents. From Kiefer Sutherland's twitchy scientist to Rufus Sewell's reluctant antihero, they break down the performances, ponder the ethics of memory manipulation, and question whether free will stands a chance in a world built on lies. Whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time visitor to Shell Beach, this conversation will have you questioning everything—especially what it means to be human.

Ben and Rob wake up in ‘Dark City', the dark sci-fi fantasy from Alex Proyas, director of ‘The Crow'. Released a year before ‘The Matrix', ‘Dark City' tells the story of John Murdock (Rufus Sewell), a man who has lost his memory in a city that never sees the sun where memory and time itself are the playthings of a race of alien beings known only as The Strangers. ‘Dark City' was a critical success but a complete box-office bomb, with Alex Proyas ultimately blaming a studio that didn't support the film correctly. But what on earth made ‘Dark City' the cult classic sci-fi fantasy that film forgot, when it's so nearly ‘The Matrix'? Why does the theatrical version spoil almost all of the movie in the opening seconds? Can Ben make peace with this plot!? Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! This week's episode sees us dust off the old VHS copy of the late 90s gnostic science fiction classic “Dark City,” written and directed by Alex Proyas. This is what your mom was talking about when you told her you wanted to see ‘The Matrix' but she said “No, we have it at home,” with some scenes almost matching shot for shot visually. Perhaps more remarkably is how Dark City tackles similar themes on loan from ancient gnostic philosophy but does so in a way faithful to its science fiction roots in German expressionism where it finds inspiration in the fertile imaginations of Fritz Lang and Albin Grau, the creators of Metropolis and Nosferatu respectively. The result is a film which beneath its slick, noir surface is a thoughtful meditation on the dark side of spirituality, evolution and the destiny of the human soul. In the first half of the show we discuss some of the occult roots of the science fiction genre itself and what it has to do with the Aeon of Horus championed by Aleister Crowley before cutting into the dense symbolism in the film's opening using the Tarot as our guide. In the extended show we visit the abode of Netzach and go deeper into Greek and even Hindu mythology to unpack some of the symbolism used in the film before discussing the overlap between The Strangers and their shadowy, real-life counterparts who manipulate our destiny from the circles beyond time. In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, recorded at the IT Press Tour in Malta, I am joined by Antoine Simkin, co-founder of Digi Film Corporation.  Antoine Simkine is also the lead producer and managing director of the Paris-based Les Films d'Antoine, which was founded in 2004. He was also the executive producer of the VFX of about one hundred feature films such as “The City of Lost Children”, “Amelie”, “Alien Resurrection” by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, “The Ninth Gate” by Roman Polanski, “Ronin” by John Frankenheimer, “Joan of Arc” by Luc Besson, and “The Man Who Cried” by Sally Potter. Antoine Simkine has then worked for 20th Century Fox as VFX producer during the final phase of development of “I Robot” by Alex Proyas. With a unique background in cinema and digital visual effects, Antoine brings a fascinating perspective on the challenges and solutions for long-term data preservation in our rapidly evolving digital age. Antoine shares his journey from pioneering digital visual effects in the 1980s and 90s to tackling one of the industry's most pressing issues: the longevity of digital data. Reflecting on his experience working with formats like Sony DIR and DTF tapes, he highlights the challenges of data migration, evolving standards, and the risks of losing critical digital assets. His work with Digifilm Corporation introduces an innovative approach to solving these problems by blending the permanence of film with the precision of digital encoding. We explore how Digifilm's Archifix solution offers a robust alternative to traditional storage methods, ensuring data preservation for decades, if not centuries. Antoine provides insight into the diverse applications of this technology, from the cinematic world to industries such as nuclear power, defense, and architecture, where the need for secure, offline data storage is paramount. As data volumes grow exponentially and regulations around data integrity and security tighten, Antoine's vision for the future of Digifilm highlights the critical importance of balancing technological advancements with sustainable, long-term preservation strategies. Could this approach be the missing piece in solving the global data storage puzzle? What role could Digifilm play in securing our digital heritage for future generations? We are back this week with our monthly edition of the Art Angle Roundup, where co-hosts Kate Brown and Ben Davis are joined by a guest to parse some of the biggest headlines of the month. This week, Naomi Rea, newly appointed editor in chief of Artnet News joins the show. Kate and Naomi just returned from reporting on the ground at Art Basel Paris, which came just one week after Frieze London and Frieze Masters, where a clearer picture of the art market was taking shape. Before we get to that, speaking of London, there was big news that activists were sentenced to prison time for the souping of a very famous Vincent Van Gogh painting. The trio discusses what the implications of this punishment are for the activists using soup-throwing and other tactics to get their message across, and if it's working at all. Next, we dive into the state of the art market, which has been the subject of many think pieces, often providing contradictory views. Finally, we dig into the man of many controversies: Elon Musk. He has been the subject of multiple accusations of alleged plagiarism in the past couple of weeks. First, Alex Proyas, who directed the 2004 adaptation of the short story I, Robot, called out Musk's Tesla on social media, writing simply: “Hey Elon, can I have my designs back please?” and shared a side-by-side image of his work on the film next to those of newly-released prototypes of Optimus, Cybercab, and Robovan at a long-awaited October 10 event intended to showcase Tesla's future products to investors. Just days later, the producers of Blade Runner 2049 filed a lawsuit suing Tesla for using imagery from that film without permission. In fact, Alcon Entertainment denied a request from Tesla and Warner Bros Discovery to use images from its film, and then Musk went ahead and used A.I.-generated references anyway. Alcon Entertainment called it “a bad-faith and intentionally malicious gambit.”
