Join Henrique and David as they descend into the stormy streets of Detroit for a tale of loss, vengeance, and gothic heroism in 1994's The Crow. Directed by Alex Proyas and starring Brandon Lee, Michael Wincott, and Ernie Hudson, this supernatural action film tells the story of musician Eric Draven, who returns from the grave exactly one year after he and his fiancée were murdered—to seek justice as the vengeful spirit known only as The Crow.

It's another patron episode! This month we've been directed to watch 1998's Dark City, a flop at the time but a cult classic in the decades since. Directed by friend of the show Alex Proyas from The Crow and starring Rufus Sewell and William Hurt, Dark City asks the same question we've all been asking ourselves: what if The Matrix had the guy from Hellraiser? And boy, does it deliver. Come float along with us and see for yourself how telekinesis can be used poorly, whether spirals are always as mysterious as you might think, and why sometimes less is more with 1998's Dark City.

Sure the bar was low but that doesn't change the fact that we remember a dark and bruting look, a 90s grunge soundtrack, a whose who of bad guy actors, and unfortunately a career-defining and final performance from Brandon Lee. If this movie is not as good as we remember we just might go goth and brude in our rooms for a week writing awful gloom poetry with the volume on our ghetto blaster turned up. Welcome to Episode #11 of the 4ever in Electric Dreams & CONFESSIONS OF A CURLY MIND co-production - Supple & Lean | A Geekcast. Presented by Imran Mirza from London, UK, and Vahé Vishapakagh Koshayan from Melbourne, Australia, for this episode the duo delve into all things related to 'The Crow'. With origins from James O'Barr's 1989 comic book series 'The Crow', the impassioned piece of work spawned its first on-screen iteration with the Alex Proyas-helmed movie in 1994. Starring the dearly departed Brandon Lee in a career-defining performance, the film went on to achieve cult status and has been revered since its release now 31 years ago. Following the 1994 original, subsequent entries within the franchise were marked by 'The Crow: City of Angels' (1996), 'The Crow: Salvation' (2000) and 'The Crow: Wicked Prayer' (2005) with neither generating favourable reviews or the money required to really justify the iteration that would follow. 'The Crow: Stairway to Heaven' - the 1998 TV series - perhaps generated the most favourable reviews but didn't get the chance to continue their story with the planned second season which never came to fruition; yet more Crows followed with a mix of the stories recounting the forlorn tragedy of the ill-fated lovers Eric Draven and Shelly Webster amongst others who were wronged by the harsh cruelty of an unjust life. The 30 year milestone has been marked by the release of the latest iteration of the vengeful vigilante, this time with Rupert Sanders in the director's chair leading a cast of Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs and Danny Huston. With Vahé and Imran both long-time fans of the 1994 original, the time seemed right to have a lengthy chat about their affections for Proyas' masterpiece, delve into the comics for the first time and revisit the sequels and reboots in an incredibly expansive conversation into James O'Barr's incredible world. The show today features original music from Supple & Lean featuring Shelly Draven with 'Your Dark Path'. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Emanating from London, UK, the 4ever in Electric Dreams website and podcast network is designed to help us celebrate the things we loved growing up and the things that continue to excite and inspire us today. With podcast episodes of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind, 90s State of Mind and Supple & Lean, there's lots of reasons to visit us again and again, and to join us in our ongoing celebration of the things we can't leave behind.

Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1998 visionary cyberpunk film DARK CITY – directed by Alex Proyas; written by Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs, and David Goyer; starring Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, & William Hurt.A man struggles with memories of his past, which include a wife he cannot remember and a nightmarish world no one else ever seems to wake up from.Dark City was a film that cemented Alex Proyas, a music video director, as a talent to watch in the late-90s and beyond. His debut film, The Crow, became an instant cult classic and his follow-up film Dark City was deeply impressive. In ways, Dark City was like a spiritual sister film to The Matrix – both films shared similar themes, both used some of the same sets, and both expounded upon the late-millennia craze of simulacra and simulation which were based upon the haunting principles that the world around you might not be real. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! This week's episode sees us dust off the old VHS copy of the late 90s gnostic science fiction classic “Dark City,” written and directed by Alex Proyas. This is what your mom was talking about when you told her you wanted to see ‘The Matrix' but she said “No, we have it at home,” with some scenes almost matching shot for shot visually. Perhaps more remarkably is how Dark City tackles similar themes on loan from ancient gnostic philosophy but does so in a way faithful to its science fiction roots in German expressionism where it finds inspiration in the fertile imaginations of Fritz Lang and Albin Grau, the creators of Metropolis and Nosferatu respectively. The result is a film which beneath its slick, noir surface is a thoughtful meditation on the dark side of spirituality, evolution and the destiny of the human soul. In the first half of the show we discuss some of the occult roots of the science fiction genre itself and what it has to do with the Aeon of Horus championed by Aleister Crowley before cutting into the dense symbolism in the film's opening using the Tarot as our guide. In the extended show we visit the abode of Netzach and go deeper into Greek and even Hindu mythology to unpack some of the symbolism used in the film before discussing the overlap between The Strangers and their shadowy, real-life counterparts who manipulate our destiny from the circles beyond time. We hope you brought your Kabbalah glasses because we'll be talking shop in this one. In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, recorded at the IT Press Tour in Malta, I am joined by Antoine Simkin, co-founder of Digi Film Corporation.  Antoine Simkine is also the lead producer and managing director of the Paris-based Les Films d'Antoine, which was founded in 2004. He was also the executive producer of the VFX of about one hundred feature films such as “The City of Lost Children”, “Amelie”, “Alien Resurrection” by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, “The Ninth Gate” by Roman Polanski, “Ronin” by John Frankenheimer, “Joan of Arc” by Luc Besson, and “The Man Who Cried” by Sally Potter. Antoine Simkine has then worked for 20th Century Fox as VFX producer during the final phase of development of “I Robot” by Alex Proyas. With a unique background in cinema and digital visual effects, Antoine brings a fascinating perspective on the challenges and solutions for long-term data preservation in our rapidly evolving digital age. Antoine shares his journey from pioneering digital visual effects in the 1980s and 90s to tackling one of the industry's most pressing issues: the longevity of digital data. Reflecting on his experience working with formats like Sony DIR and DTF tapes, he highlights the challenges of data migration, evolving standards, and the risks of losing critical digital assets. His work with Digifilm Corporation introduces an innovative approach to solving these problems by blending the permanence of film with the precision of digital encoding. We explore how Digifilm's Archifix solution offers a robust alternative to traditional storage methods, ensuring data preservation for decades, if not centuries. Antoine provides insight into the diverse applications of this technology, from the cinematic world to industries such as nuclear power, defense, and architecture, where the need for secure, offline data storage is paramount. As data volumes grow exponentially and regulations around data integrity and security tighten, Antoine's vision for the future of Digifilm highlights the critical importance of balancing technological advancements with sustainable, long-term preservation strategies. Could this approach be the missing piece in solving the global data storage puzzle? What role could Digifilm play in securing our digital heritage for future generations? We are back this week with our monthly edition of the Art Angle Roundup, where co-hosts Kate Brown and Ben Davis are joined by a guest to parse some of the biggest headlines of the month. This week, Naomi Rea, newly appointed editor in chief of Artnet News joins the show. Kate and Naomi just returned from reporting on the ground at Art Basel Paris, which came just one week after Frieze London and Frieze Masters, where a clearer picture of the art market was taking shape. Before we get to that, speaking of London, there was big news that activists were sentenced to prison time for the souping of a very famous Vincent Van Gogh painting. The trio discusses what the implications of this punishment are for the activists using soup-throwing and other tactics to get their message across, and if it's working at all. Next, we dive into the state of the art market, which has been the subject of many think pieces, often providing contradictory views. Finally, we dig into the man of many controversies: Elon Musk. He has been the subject of multiple accusations of alleged plagiarism in the past couple of weeks. First, Alex Proyas, who directed the 2004 adaptation of the short story I, Robot, called out Musk's Tesla on social media, writing simply: “Hey Elon, can I have my designs back please?” and shared a side-by-side image of his work on the film next to those of newly-released prototypes of Optimus, Cybercab, and Robovan at a long-awaited October 10 event intended to showcase Tesla's future products to investors. Just days later, the producers of Blade Runner 2049 filed a lawsuit suing Tesla for using imagery from that film without permission. In fact, Alcon Entertainment denied a request from Tesla and Warner Bros Discovery to use images from its film, and then Musk went ahead and used A.I.-generated references anyway. Alcon Entertainment called it “a bad-faith and intentionally malicious gambit.”

Ben & Rob dig up the original 1994 Alex Proyas directed goth classic ‘The Crow'. When Eric Draven and his fiancee are brutally murdered, he mysteriously returns from the dead with the help of a crow as it begins to guide him to his killers. This film represents the peak of 90s goth culture, with an astonishing soundtrack and acting performances to match; it will however sadly be forever remembered more for the tragedy that occurred during its production than it will for its own, many, merits. Rob is the podcast's recovering goth, so this film was massively influential on his developing brain. Ben is fully allergic to edgelord goth stuff. But is the bird featured in the film even a crow? Was this film actually a victim of a Triad curse? And what is it about this film that endures even to this day? Does It Fly?
The Real Magic of the Original Crow Movie

Does It Fly?

Alex Proyas' 1994 The Crow is a genuinely great film, released at a time when “comic book movies” weren't an all-encompassing pop culture phenomenon, and one that plays very much like a unique action-horror film (rather than a superhero one). We can't recommend it, or its unbelievably badass soundtrack album, enough. The Crow has a little of everything: it's a horror movie, it's a love story, it's a twisted superhero origin story and revenge tale, and it's a unique time capsule of a particular moment in pop culture history. But all of those things have been discussed to death elsewhere, right? Are we breaking down the unique ways that Eric Draven kills the men who wronged him during his life? Nope. Are we delving into the philosophies surrounding the prospects of life after death? Not this episode! Are we walking about how cool it would be to make friends with a crow? Abso-freakin'-lutely!An under-discussed part of The Crow is the role that an actual, physical crow seems to play in Eric's journey of post-life revenge. The bird is somewhat magical, but not a complete manifestation of the supernatural. In fact, it functions very much like the concept of a “familiar” often found in fantasy literature. So that's the topic we're taking a birds-eye look at this time around. And believe it or not, there's a LOT to unpack. Seriously, you have no idea how smart crows are, or just how feasible some aspects of the magical familiar might have roots in real science. Want to find out more? Watch it right here or on our YouTube page.SUGGESTED VIEWING Unfortunately, you can't divorce The Crow from the real life tragedy that surrounds it, notably the untimely accidental death of star Brandon Lee during filming. Shudder's Cursed Films season 1 episode 4 deals with this, and it's worth a watch if you want more background on this infamous moment in cinema history. There are a bunch of mediocre sequels to the original film (and even a TV series!), but we don't recommend them. Anyway, the only piece of The Crow franchise that we considered for this episode was that original, classic 1994 movie. However, if you want to get a sense of just how great a talent Brandon Lee was, and how this movie SHOULD have kickstarted a new phase of his career that would have brought him a level of mainstream stardom, allow us to recommend 1991's Showdown in Little Tokyo (co-starring the great Dolph Lundgren!) and 1992's Rapid Fire. Neither are exactly masterpieces, but they sure do kick some ass and Brandon is a natural. For some…less friendly…birds, you absolutely should watch Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds if you haven't already. You'll be perfectly happy not having any of them as your familiars. And of course, there's a new reboot of The Crow in theaters now. There's some crossover with our further readings below, but this New York Times video that asks (and kind of answers) the question of “how smart are crows” is quite a watch!Oh, and the movie that freaked Hakeem out as a kid? That's a 1975 weird one starring none other than William Shatner in one of his...less memorable...rolls, called The Devil's Rain.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! But before we get into the scientific and mythological readings to go with this episode, allow us to suggest that you give James O'Barr's original comic series that launched this franchise a read. It's harrowing, beautiful, violent stuff, and just different enough from the movie that you won't feel like you know everything that's gonna happen! OK, now back to your regularly scheduled science-y stuff.FamiliarsIt will come as no surprise to anyone that there isn't a ton of serious scientific writing on the subject of familiars. But the more “new age” corners of the internet have done their homework, and the above article is a compelling read.Crows in MythologyCrows and ravens are recurring symbols in a number of religious and mythological traditions. Learn up on them in case one decides to quiz you.Crows and MasksIn case you need proof that you should never wrong a crow, because they WILL remember your face. How to Befriend a CrowWe're serious. From no less a source than M.I.T!Crows use tools! Not only do crows know how to make and use simple tools to accomplish their goals, it apparently puts them in a really good mood, too!The Eyes of JackdawsNo, that isn't the name of another horror movie. But Hakeem talks about this study on how these particular birds can read human expressions. We're kicking off our Halloween celebrations early, so go light some candles and read Edgar Allan Poe's “The Raven” for some kicks. “Nevermore.”WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We recently unpacked three gadgets and concepts for the 60th anniversary of James Bond in Goldfinger. Rufus Sewell stars as John Murdoch, who wakes up one day with amnesia in an non-descript hotel room with a butchered woman, immediately having to go on the run as the prime suspect in a series of murders of prostitutes around the city -- but he can't remember if he did it.  In addition to the police force, Murdoch is also hotly pursued by a shifty psychologist named Dr. Shreber (Kiefer Sutherland), a tenacious detective, Frank Bumstead (WIlliam Hurt), a woman claiming to be his philandering wife, Emma (Jennifer Connelly), and a spate of pale and creepy-looking, trenchcoated Nosferatus (or so they appear), who are looking for Murdoch because he seems to possess abilities above and beyond what normal men have, which makes him a danger to them.  As Murdoch seeks to get to the bottom of who he is and what's going on, he discovers that there's an even bigger mystery, which is who everyone else is, what kind of city they all reside in, why is it being controlled by these shady creatures who seem otherworldly, and just why does it always seem to be nighttime?

Back in the early days of the comic book movies, it was rare to see one released to theaters which was not only financially successful but also generally beloved by fans.  There were the Batman films....and then everything else including The Rocketeer, The Shadow, and Dick Tracy.  But just under thirty years, one came out which not only proved to be both financially successful and hugely influential for so many other subgenre films which were to follow up but also was being released under unusually tragic circumstances.  This was the final on-screen appearance of Brandon Lee who unfortunately died during production as the result of an on-set accident involving the use of a prop gun.  It was a shocking turn of events for some one who seemed to have enormous promise as a potential movie star and who also happened to be the son of a legendary movie star (Bruce Lee) who also died under mysterious circumstances almost three decades prior. :( Under the sure hand of director Alex Proyas, this supernatural revenge thriller turned out better than any one could have expected.  It tells the story of Eric Draven, the front man for a local goth rock band in Detroit who is brutally murdered alongside his fiance....but then is brought back temporarily to bring justice to those who wronged him and his lost love.  Also co-starring Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, and Bai Ling, it's time to revisit one of the more beloved comic book adaptations of the '90's...or any decade for that matter. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
