Larry Reed and Joe Lehman on the Overton Window and Joe Overton
Larry Reed and his two brothers LeRoy and Dave started Reed's Dairy in 1955, selling fresh milk for roughly 50 cents per gallon and allowing customers to pay with an honor system using a shoebox above their dairy refrigerator in their original location in Idaho Falls. Although their farm-to-consumer roots still are in operation today with home delivery still in place as they had in the beginning, second-generation Alan Reed brought unmistakable innovation as a young opportunist to the family business in the late 70's. Cheese, ice cream, and chocolate milk were all products added to the lineup of products at Reed's Dairy, and to this day the ice cream at Reed's is their most popular and beloved product. In this episode, Alan uncovers the full story of how Reed's Dairy began and grew, the uncompromising history behind the making of their ice cream and iconic chocolate milk (complete with Idaho potato flakes), and what Alan Reed believes to be the key to long-lasting small business. It's probably not surprising that the values many Americans hold have shifted over time. Still, it's disheartening to see a WSJ poll that shows just 38% of Americans believe in patriotic values. Jeffrey A. Tucker says the problem with that WSJ survey is in the interpretation rather than the numbers themselves. His take on the decline in patriotism is worth reading. Staying optimistic is getting to be a challenge. Check out the latest essay from Larry Reed on what Anne Frank and Dr. Christian Larson can teach us about the power of optimism. One of the most disturbing aspects of our time is how everything that was was normal is considered radical and extreme. Michael Liccione describes how society is pathologizing healthy opinions. Those of us who feel the call to stand up for freedom and to push back against tyranny at every level are sometimes left wondering how to proceed. Ryan McMaken reminds us that, to fight the state, we must build non-state institutions. Lenore Skenazy has been called the "worst mother in America" by members of the media. Her parenting advice seems pretty accurate. Her latest column is about how we wanted the best for our children but made a mistake. Sponsors: Monticello College Life Saving Food Bereli TMCP Nation

Today's high inflation rate is poised to go higher. The latest CPI was up 7.9%. Home prices hit an all time high of $364,000 per Redfin, up 16% annually. Safety factors, building restrictions and the environmental movement all contribute to higher home prices and more homelessness. Larry Reed, the longtime former President of FEE - the Foundation for Economic Education - joins us. He believes that free market principles incentive the best of human behavior - prudent risk-taking, hard work, innovation, and ethics. Larry is an expert on the Great Depression. He relates those lessons to today's economy. We discuss real estate, economics, inflation, interest rates, and taxes. Learn about the danger of the government “giving away free stuff”. One fault with government intervention is favorable short-term action that results in long-term destruction. On this episode of Our American Stories, Bob McLalan is back with The McLalan Files and today he takes us on his scuba diving adventure to Guadalcanal. Larry Reed of FEE tells the story of the Flushing Remonstrance, a pivotal document, and moment, that established a precedent of religious liberty in what would eventually become the United States. Bill Bryk brings us the story of the ingenious inventor, Joshua Lionel Cowen, who went from inventing naval mine detonators to one of the top 5 toys of the 20th century... and all because he was unimpressed by a store's window display.
