The numbers tell a powerful story about America and its future. Today, 64 million Latinos, those with multi-generational roots and newcomers, call the United States home. While they are vital contributors to our economy, culture, and civil rights legacy, they are grossly underrepresented (just 2%) in elected office. Latino Victory is the trailblazing nonprofit that is changing the trajectory of Latino electoral power, and it is winning. On this episode of Power Station, Sindy Benavides, President & CEO of Victory Fund, who leads with strategic brilliance and heart, begins the conversation with a staggering statistic. Every 30 seconds a Latino in the United States turns 18. These numbers motivate Latino Victory to empower Latinos across the country with information about everything there is to know about voting and civic engagement.  Its 501c4 counterpart elevates the campaigns of an impressive roster of candidates vying for office at the local, state, and federal levels. Latino Victory's founders, Eva Longoria and Henry Muñoz III, stepped up to ensure that the Latino electorate is seen, heard, and engaged. Sindy Benavides and a growing movement for representation are bringing the vision to life.

In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with Luis Miranda, one of New York, and the country's, most dynamic cross-sector leaders, with more than four decades of experience in government, business, politics and advocacy, community development, and the arts. Miranda is the founding partner of the MirRam Group, founding president of the Hispanic Federation, and board chair of the Latino Victory Fund, the Public Theater, and the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance. In the words of his son Lin-Manuel, Miranda is relentless.   We begin with Miranda's childhood and formative years in Vega Alta, a small town in Puerto Rico where he was born and raised before leaving for New York to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology at NYU. Although he left Puerto Rico as a very young man, the place has remained central to his identity and family — and, as beautifully told in the award-winning HBO documentary Siempre, Luis, a place he returns to regularly, including to lead much of the rebuilding effort after hurricanes Irma and Maria.   Once settled in New York, Miranda discovered that work as a clinical psychologist didn't suit him, but the city “fit like a glove.” Inspired by his parents, who were deeply engaged in public service, Miranda became a community activist, first via nonprofit organizations, then in government when he “came to understand the role that politics can play in changing lives, making communities better.” Miranda would go on to serve in three Mayoral administrations — Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani — and became increasingly involved in local, state, and national politics, helping to elect officials to the New York City Council, the New York State Assembly, and all of New York's recent representatives in the US Senate: Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, Charles Schumer, and Kirsten Gillibrand. Miranda also chairs Latino Victory, focused on building power in the Latino community by electing more Latinos to office.   We end with a discussion of the arts — and the ways in which Miranda's commitment to the arts, politics, community activism, and inclusion all come together. His many recent and large-scale arts projects include bringing Hamilton to Puerto Rico as part of the hurricane recovery effort, leading the restoration of the United Palace theater in Washington Heights, and chairing the board of The Public Theater, where he is leading its Fund for Free Theater campaign. “The arts feed the soul; they bring people together,” Miranda says. “We have to ensure they are accessible.”   Thanks for listening! Cristóbal Alex is a Civil Rights attorney, the former founding President of Latino Victory, a veteran of Hillary for America, and now Senior Advisor to Vice President Joe Biden in his bid to win the Presidency. Alex joined the Vice President in March 2019, even before Biden had officially declared his intent to run for the White House. "In this moment of crisis, Joe Biden will work to unify the country and address the very real injustices and the need for systemic change." On this episode of our podcast, Cristóbal provides us with an inside perspective of the Biden campaign; reflecting on the ups and downs of the 2020 primaries, where they're focused now as the presumptive nominee, how they intend to build coalitions with the various constituencies in the Democratic Party, and Joe Biden's plan to recognize the pain and grief of the American people in this tense moment. When asked about Joe Biden's involvement with and plan for the Latino community, Cristóbal elaborated on his work with Biden throughout his time at Latino Victory. Biden was always supportive of their work, and began campaigning with Latino Victory in Nevada, Florida, and Arizona in 2014, and continued throughout the 2016 election. "Based on my experience, I know Latinos will have a best friend in Joe Biden in the White House." When Donald Trump entered the race attacking immigrants and Latinos, Joe Biden didn't stop. He dropped by the Latino Victory office unannounced to reaffirm his support for the community. Alex has seen first-hand the compassion of the Vice President, and he goes in more detail into his personal experiences with him as a way to underscore his strength as a candidate in this tumultuous moment in our nation.

Gender equity in government It’s a disservice to our communities and our democracy when the voices of women are missing in government. Women have a right for government to reflect their needs. The actual, lived experiences and perspectives of women in leadership positions enrich and inform our budgets, public policy, and legislation in ways that would not be possible in their absence. A prime example is reproductive rights. When women are at the table, onerous legislation against reproductive rights is less likely. Campaign Finance Program An effective campaign finance program is critical for leveling the playing field for political candidates. It amplifies the voices of small donors and marginalized communities, encourages citizens from all walks of life to run for office, and reduces the possibility of corruption. The New York City Campaign Finance Board boasts a campaign finance program that matches each dollar that is donated with an $8 contribution from public funds. Women Can Win Women have a right to run and to be elected. The record number of women elected into Congress in the 2018 midterm election proves that women can win. Still, women are reluctant to jump into the fray, and have to be asked 5 to 6 times to run for office. Women candidates benefit from being mentored, gaining the skills and understanding about what it takes to run for office, and an effective campaign finance program. Find out more: Melissa Mark-Viverito is a leading progressive voice in New York. She made history in 2005 when she was elected as the first Latina to represent Spanish Harlem/El Barrio in the New York City Council. In January 2014, she was unanimously elected to serve as New York City Council Speaker. Melissa championed women, immigrants, LGBTQ communities, and black and brown New Yorkers that were historically ignored by city government. She called for closing Rikers Island, demanded the city decriminalize low-level offenses, and fought for lawyers for all undocumented immigrants. Learn more about her public service record here. Political Power The proactive strategy of Latino Victory to build power through elections is a recipe for success. They focus on grooming and training candidates who represent their community’s values, empowering Latino voters, and developing a pipeline of Latino donors. The proof is in the pudding: great Latino candidates are exploding Latino turnout. Demographics Latinos represent 18% of the U.S. population and natural-born Latinos are the fastest part of demographic growth. Half of them live in states that are not battleground states, which means that most candidates ignore them. In addition, Latinos only make up about 1% of all elected officials. The 2016 election shook this dynamic up, the way that Prop 187 mobilized Latinos in California. Four of the most competitive U.S. Senate races are in Latino states: Texas, Florida, Arizona, and Nevada. Latino issues are American issues Surveys show that Latinos prioritize on the issues just like most other Americans. Healthcare tops the list, followed by a strong economy, good jobs, education, and the environment. “You could just as easily call a Latino Victory Fund, "American Victory Fund”.” Find out more: Cristóbal Alex is the President of Latino Victory, an organization that works to grow Latino political power by increasing Latino representation at every level of government and building a base of donors to support this critical work.
