In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with Luis Miranda, one of New York, and the country's, most dynamic cross-sector leaders, with more than four decades of experience in government, business, politics and advocacy, community development, and the arts. Miranda is the founding partner of the MirRam Group, founding president of the Hispanic Federation, and board chair of the Latino Victory Fund, the Public Theater, and the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance. In the words of his son Lin-Manuel, Miranda is relentless. We begin with Miranda's childhood and formative years in Vega Alta, a small town in Puerto Rico where he was born and raised before leaving for New York to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology at NYU. Although he left Puerto Rico as a very young man, the place has remained central to his identity and family — and, as beautifully told in the award-winning HBO documentary Siempre, Luis, a place he returns to regularly, including to lead much of the rebuilding effort after hurricanes Irma and Maria. Once settled in New York, Miranda discovered that work as a clinical psychologist didn't suit him, but the city “fit like a glove.” Inspired by his parents, who were deeply engaged in public service, Miranda became a community activist, first via nonprofit organizations, then in government when he “came to understand the role that politics can play in changing lives, making communities better.” Miranda would go on to serve in three Mayoral administrations — Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani — and became increasingly involved in local, state, and national politics, helping to elect officials to the New York City Council, the New York State Assembly, and all of New York's recent representatives in the US Senate: Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, Charles Schumer, and Kirsten Gillibrand. Miranda also chairs Latino Victory, focused on building power in the Latino community by electing more Latinos to office. We end with a discussion of the arts — and the ways in which Miranda's commitment to the arts, politics, community activism, and inclusion all come together. His many recent and large-scale arts projects include bringing Hamilton to Puerto Rico as part of the hurricane recovery effort, leading the restoration of the United Palace theater in Washington Heights, and chairing the board of The Public Theater, where he is leading its Fund for Free Theater campaign. “The arts feed the soul; they bring people together,” Miranda says. “We have to ensure they are accessible.” Thanks for listening! This week on The Florida Roundup, we talk about the U.S. Humanitarian Parole Program with Luis Miranda, principal deputy assistant secretary for communications at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Plus, we look at Florida's chartered flights from Israel with the Miami Herald's Ana Ceballos. And later, an update on how school districts are navigating book reviews.
Even though the Latino population in New York is at record levels, there are no citywide Latino officials. A new survey of Latino voters in New York finds that Latinos themselves have a hard time naming an influential Latino leader in New York, with just under 15% naming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Latino voters are also split in their opinion of the Democratic Party — with 40% saying that the state government does not represent or incorporate the Latino perspective. Luis Miranda, founder of the Hamilton Campaign Network, and Melissa Mark-Viverito, president of the network and former City Council speaker, joined NY1's Errol Louis to discuss the poll they commissioned and the role of Latinos in New York politics. They also talked about how the migrant crisis needs a leading voice from the Latino community, and how some asylum seekers have encountered acts of violence and hostility upon arriving in New York. Rigoberta Menchú Tum is an Indigenous Mayan human rights activist from Guatemala who grew up in the depths of poverty and in a country ravaged by a decades-long civil war. Despite the many challenges she faced, including the tragic loss of her parents to government-sponsored violence, Rigoberta never gave up on her ideals and always fought for freedom and justice. Her bravery and outspoken activism for the rights of Indigenous, poor, and marginalized peoples led to her receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992—the first Indigenous person and ninth woman to do so. About the Narrator Rebeca Lane was born in 1984 in Guatemala, a country that like many others in Latin America has experienced dictatorships and forced disappearances. The history that runs through her veins, from the hands of her poignant verses, has made her way into the Latin rap scene as a thoughtful and fun voice with feminist messages. She has published four studio albums and made multiple tours of Latin America, the United States and Europe. Rebeca Lane founded the project Somos Guerreras with which she has traveled the continent doing talks, workshops and presentations making visible the work of women in Hip Hop. At the beginning of 2021 she released her new EP “Llorando diamantes“ and is currently working on her next album. Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved adventure, exploring nature, and dreamt of skiing down the tallest mountains in the world. Her name was Kit DesLauriers, a determined young woman with a fierce curiosity to explore the tallest mountaintops — and then ski freely down the slopes. Kit was the first person to ski all Seven Summits, the first woman to ski Mount Everest, and is a two-time women's world freeskiing champion. About the Narrator Combining a passion for exploration, mountain adventures and skiing, Hilaree Nelson travelled to some of the most exotic mountain ranges on earth. Her expedition career led her to many firsts in the world of ski mountaineering including linking two 8000m peaks (Everest and Lhotse) in one push, first ski descents on Baffin Island, a first American ascent and ski descent of Papsura peak in India, and a first ski descent of the 4th highest peak in the world, Lhotse. She was the Captain of the North Face Athlete Team, an active leader on climate with Protect Our Winters, and an avid proponent of wild places such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Hilaree was also the mother of two wild boys and found her sanity in the San Juan Mountains near her home in Telluride, Colorado.
