For the past couple of years, we have seen La Gloria Cubana work with some experimental tobaccos and a crowd-sourced project. At the same time, La Gloria Cubana has been a brand looking to reconnect with its roots. First, there was the La Gloria Cubana Eighth Street, which saw La Gloria Cubana return to making a cigar in Little Havana for the first time since Ernesto Perez-Carrillo owned the brand. La Gloria Cubana now turns to Ernesto for an all-new regular production line called Los Gloriosos. This cigar was shown off at the Forged Cigar Company booth at PCA 2025. The Cuban sandwich. If it's made with ingredients different from someone else's recipe, you might find yourself in an hours-long argument in the middle of Little Havana. In Miami and Tampa, Florida, restaurant owners, historians, and Cuban Americans recount their own memories of the Cuban sandwich, as well as the story of its origins. In this episode of Gravy, reporter Kayla Stewart explores the sandwich's long-standing origin story, new research about the Cuban sandwich, and how the South influenced the sandwich's popularity and the current identity of Floridian Cuban Americans. Gravy thanks La Segunda Bakery, Sanguich de Miami, and Ana Sofia Pelaez, author of The Cuban Table, for contributions to this episode. In my ongoing exploration of the history of homophobia in life and the law, I've been researching the trends, and I do mean trends, of attacks fueled by the targeting of mostly gay men. From the late 1950s through the 1970s in the United States, "Rolling a Queer" became such an epidemic that both Democrats and Republicans came together to introduce legislation that would create some minor protections for gays and lesbians. It failed, of course, and the attacks continued at pace.  This crime wave helps to explain why the "Homosexual Panic Defense" began to be used in the 1960s in courtrooms across the country. A young man defending himself from the advances of a predatory homosexual is much more defendable than a defendant targeting gay men for fun and profit.  I have many more of these stories from the 1950s through the 1970s to share. Please subscribe. In this week's episode:  Sam Nordquist left home to visit his online girlfriend. When his mother and other family members couldn't get ahold of him, they begged authorities to help him, but sadly, help came too late.  In September 2024, Zsolt Zsolyomi disabled his leg monitor and disappeared onto the north Florida Island of Miami Beach and Little Havana using an alias to court, rob, batter, and then murder two older men with disabilities. Would the police stop him before he could kill again? In 1973, the Long Beach murder of a World War II veteran and beloved school teacher, Hollis Voas, exposed the escalating cycle of rolling a queer that spiked during the 1960s and 1970s in the U.S. Law enforcement quickly tracked down the suspects Don James Myers and Kenneth Evans, after discovering the victim tied to his blood-soaked bedroom. Thirty-nine pieces of evidence, a stolen Cadillac, and a childhood friend would lead police to the perpetrators a few hours after the murder. I saw this 1973 news item so quietly tucked away in a newspaper that I knew I had to share his story. Thanks to one of Mr. Voas' relatives for sharing a picture of him for the YouTube coverage. The 1953 murder of bartender Walter Thalen by a drifter who wandered into the bar where Thalen worked at the end of a night of drinking would have a devasting impact far and wide.  In March of 2025, Buffalo, New York, Allentown was rocked by the double murder of two beloved men. Mickey Harmon and Jordan Celotto contributed to their community in art and activism, and they were snatched away senselessly and violently.  49, California Fire Captain Rebecca Marodi and 53, Yolanda Olejniczak-Marodi, began dating in 2018, marrying in 2022. By February 2025, Marodi was ready to end what friends called a controlling and isolating marriage, but she would never get the chance. This wasn't the first time Yolanda Olejniczak-Marodi was involved in a murder. Reports of intimate partner violence among lesbians are the most underreported. If you or anyone you know needs help, use the resources below. Finally, an update on cases we've covered on the channel and a cold case.  I hope you stay with me as I continue to share more of these hidden stories of lives lived and snuffed out. Mullsy is stunned we haven't heard from Adrian in The Burgh due to Russell Wilson signing with the Giants. Chris is tired of the football aggregators. The Steelers attended the Ohio State pro day (eyeball emoji) and checked out a few players that could be on their radar. Should Emeka Egbuka still be in their sights as we get closer to the draft? If the Steelers take a mid-round QB, will it be Will Howard? We think it's smart to take a chance on an OSU WR if you can, but only if you aren't feeling a DL. 93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Jeff doesn't think Aaron Rodgers was the plan all along, especially after Art Rooney stated he wanted one of the two guys from last season. Jeff talked about the departure of Justin Fields and how they may have been felt in the locker room. Is the Rodgers tape as bad as we think from last season? The Steelers were watching Emeka Egbuka today – should they be interested in him at 21st overall? We reacted to Russell Wilson already saying he expects to be the starter in New York. Jeff gave his quick Pirates season prediction. Pirates insider Noah Hiles from the PG joined the show. Noah joined us to mostly tell us about his battles with chickens outside of his Air Bnb in Little Havana as he gets set for the Pirates to open their season. He said it has become a massive problem with eggs being laid and such. Noah said it's been a tough day dealing with the issues in Miami, but he is learning a new language in the process. Noah also said he was warned about crocodiles in the area. Noah gave his outlook on the Pirates' season and highlighted the pitching – saying it's a much deeper crop than 2024. Russ Eagle is the guest host for a discussion of Clay's recent cultural tour of Cuba. Clay, Russ, and guests spent 10 days in Cuba, traveling in a small bus across the island. They began in Santiago, where the Cuban Revolution touched off on July 26, 1953, and ended in Havana, once one of the most vibrant cities in the Caribbean. It is still full of creative people exhibiting extraordinary resourcefulness under difficult circumstances. They visited two Bay of Pigs museums, one in Little Havana in Miami (pro-insurrection) and one at the Bay of Pigs itself (pro-Castro). They spent an afternoon swimming in the Bay of Pigs! Clay performed as Theodore Roosevelt at San Juan Hill, followed by a thoughtful refutation by a Cuban professor of law. At the end of our journey, they visited Ernest Hemingway's villa outside Havana and the fishing village from which he took his boat, Pilar, out to sea in search of marlin.

City in Panic From Serial Attacks. He Escaped Jail. Special Episode. The vibrant city of Miami found itself in the grip of fear. A serial attacker, later dubbed the Shenandoah Rapist, stalked the streets, leaving a trail of trauma and panic in his wake. This is the story of a community under siege, the relentless pursuit of justice, and the shocking twists that kept a city on edge. The interview with Detective Cox is available as a free podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website or most major podcast platforms. A Community Living in Fear From 2002 to 2003, Miami's Little Havana and Shenandoah neighborhoods became hunting grounds for a predator. The serial rapist targeted females indiscriminately, with victims ranging from children as young as 11 to elderly women in their late 70s. As attacks mounted, so did the fear. Residents locked their doors, watched their children closely, and eyed strangers with suspicion. Be sure to check out the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and most all social media platforms. The Miami-Dade Police Department found itself under immense pressure. Detective Wayne Cox, one of the lead investigators, shouldered the burden of tracking down this elusive criminal and restoring peace to the terrorized communities. The Elusive Predator, City in Panic From Serial Attacks. He Escaped Jail. Despite the best efforts of law enforcement, the Shenandoah Rapist remained a shadow. Described as an immigrant with a Central American accent, he blended seamlessly into the diverse Miami landscape. Each attack added to the growing frustration and criticism faced by the police department. As weeks turned into months, authorities increased the reward for information to $25,000, hoping to break the case. The community was on edge, desperate for any lead that might bring the nightmare to an end. Keep informed by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media platforms. A Breakthrough and a Setback. City in Panic From Serial Attacks. He Escaped Jail. Special Episode. The case nearly cracked open when a brave Miami resident confronted the suspect during an attempted assault on his sister-in-law. In the ensuing struggle, the attacker managed to escape, but not before leaving behind crucial evidence - his DNA from biting his pursuer. The real breakthrough came on September 19, 2003. A sharp-eyed Miami police officer, acting on instinct, pulled over a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's car. The driver provided a DNA sample that would prove to be the key to unlocking the case. As the DNA results came back positive, Miami breathed a collective sigh of relief. The police department celebrated the arrest, believing the reign of terror was finally over. But the story was far from finished. Listen to this interview as a free podcast on our website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Escape from Justice. City in Panic From Serial Attacks.  In a shocking turn of events that seemed ripped from the pages of a thriller, the accused serial rapist orchestrated a daring escape from jail on December 20, 2003. Along with another inmate, he climbed through a vent in the ceiling of his cell, made his way to the sixth-floor roof, and used bed sheets as a makeshift rope to rappel down the building. The escape sent shockwaves through the community, reigniting the panic that had gripped Miami for months. Law enforcement launched a massive manhunt, leaving no stone unturned in their search for the fugitive. Neighborhoods were combed, airports and train stations were monitored, and ports were placed on high alert. The Final Capture. City in Panic From Serial Attacks. He Escaped Jail.  For nearly a week, Miami held its breath. Then, a tip led detectives to a video store in southwest Miami. On a Monday night, Detective Cox and his partner closed in on their target. Despite the suspect's attempts to mislead officers by claiming to be a homeless man from Nicaragua, his true identity was quickly confirmed. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, MeWe and other social media platforms.  Articles about this are on Newsbreak and Medium. The recapture brought a wave of relief to the city, but the ordeal had left its mark. The community, while grateful for the resolution, was forever changed by the experience. Justice and Healing. City in Panic From Serial Attacks.  The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of closure to the victims and the community. In a powerful courtroom moment, one of the survivors - who was just 11 years old at the time of her assault - confronted her attacker. Now 14, she bravely read a statement, calling him an "evil person" while also expressing her determination not to let hatred consume her. The judge's sentence was swift and severe: five consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. The prosecutor didn't mince words, emphasizing the brutality of the crimes and describing the attacker as "a sexual predator of the worst type" who had "forever stripped her of her childhood." The case of the Shenandoah Rapist serves as a stark reminder of the impact that violent criminals can have on a community. It highlights the importance of vigilance, both from law enforcement and citizens alike. The successful resolution of the case was a testament to the persistence of detectives like Wayne Cox, whose efforts are chronicled in his book "Miami Panic: The Story of Wayne Cox and The Shenandoah Rapist." As Miami moved forward from this dark chapter, the focus shifted to healing and prevention. The case prompted crucial discussions about improving jail security, enhancing communication between law enforcement and communities, and providing better support for survivors of sexual assault. Listen to the interview with Detective Cox which is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website and most major podcast Platforms. The Power of Community and Technology. City in Panic From Serial Attacks. He Escaped Jail. Special Episode. This case underscores the crucial role that community involvement plays in solving crimes. The tip that led to the rapist's recapture after his escape came from an alert citizen. Similarly, the initial break in the case came from a combination of community vigilance and good police work. Advancements in DNA technology proved instrumental in linking the suspect to the crime scenes, highlighting the importance of forensic science in modern criminal investigations. As law enforcement continues to evolve, the integration of technology and traditional police work remains a powerful combination in the fight against crime. A City Forever Changed. City in Panic From Serial Attacks. He Escaped Jail.  The story of the Shenandoah Rapist is more than just a true crime tale. It's a narrative about a city's resilience in the face of terror, the tireless efforts of law enforcement, and the strength of survivors. While the events of 2002-2003 left an indelible mark on Miami, they also served as a catalyst for change and a reminder of the importance of community solidarity in the face of adversity. Check out the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, MeWe and other social media platforms. Articles about this are on Newsbreak and Medium. As we reflect on this case, it's crucial to remember the victims and their ongoing journey of healing. Their courage in confronting their attacker and reclaiming their lives serves as an inspiration to us all. Through continued vigilance, support for survivors, and advancements in law enforcement techniques, we can work towards creating safer communities for everyone. The Shenandoah Rapist case remains a powerful reminder that even in our darkest hours, the combined efforts of a determined community and dedicated law enforcement can overcome evil and bring justice to light. Pedro "Pegy" Rosello was a Cuban-American drug trafficker who was affiliated with the Los Muchachos crime syndicate in Miami during the 1980s. He grew up in Little Havana, where he met Willy Falcon through his sister, who was married to Willy's brother Gustavo ("Taby"). Rosello grew ambitious because of his unwillingness to follow in the footsteps of his working-class father, and he became involved in Falcon and Sal Magluta's cartel. Rosello developed a relationship with Alexia Echevarria, a Cuban-American woman whom he had met at a restaurant and later a nightclub, and they were engaged to marry before they were forced to call off the wedding on learning that the police intended to arrest him there. On 17 September 1991, he was arrested in his driveway as the police cracked down on the cartel. Rather than spend the rest of his life in prison, he agreed to cooperate with the government, drawing a map of La Gorce Island and thus helping with the 15 October 1991 arrest of Sal Magluta. He was sentenced to 24 years in prison, serving only 4. He was released in 1996, and he divorced Echevarria, who became a reality television star. In 2021, after being interviewed for the documentary Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami, he was arrested for attempting to sell 5 kilograms of cocaine to a DEA informant, and he was released in 2022. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/checkingconmauro/message

Jorge Fernandez, an LCSW and private practice owner, joins me to discuss facing fears and embracing the journey of entrepreneurship in the mental health field. 3 key takeaways: Face Your Fears Head-On: Jorge and I delve into common fears therapists have about liability and financial stability when considering private practice. We emphasize the importance of betting on oneself and not allowing these fears to hold you back from building a fulfilling career. Know Your Business Inside and Out: Whether it's understanding the nitty-gritty of billing or the broader aspects of business management, knowing every part of your practice is crucial before you can effectively delegate or outsource tasks. Embrace Imperfection: As small business owners, it's easy to get bogged down by the desire for perfection. Jorge highlights the value in focusing on serving clients to the best of our ability and not being paralyzed by the minutiae of every decision. Note from Jorge: My parents both emigrated from Cuba as teenagers to flee from Fidel Castro's rule. My father worked incredibly hard to ensure I had what I needed for my education, while my mother was present for every school event that needed a volunteer. They taught me the value of helping others and showing respect. My career began in the Little Havana section of Miami in the late 1990s providing therapy to children and families in their homes in the exclusively immigrant population. I then moved to New York City, where I provided individual and group therapy to teenagers in two high schools. I later oversaw therapy with both families of teens abusing drugs and alcohol and families accused of abuse or neglect of their children. I also helped bring yoga classes for kids and Spanish-language parenting classes to these communities. I came to Connecticut in 2014 and, before private practice, ran one of only three programs in the state providing therapy inside the home for families of adolescents who were demonstrating inappropriate sexual behaviors. I now run a solo private practice serving all of Connecticut through in-person and telehealth sessions with individuals and families. I also offer clinical supervision and coaching to therapists. I have training from the Ackerman Institute for the Family, the Salvador Minuchin Center for the Family, the Jewish Board of Family & Children's Services' Advanced Training Program, and problem sexual behavior training from MST Associates. Miami is a city steeped in magic and mystery, from its rich cultural history and vibrant culture. Yet, amidst the glittering facade of glamour and vibrancy lies a darker chapter in Miami's history—the Cocaine Cowboys era—a tale of excess, danger, and intrigue that left an indelible mark on the cityscape. But beyond the myths and misconceptions, Miami beckons with its eclectic neighborhoods, picturesque beaches, and a wealth of cultural treasures waiting to be explored. Join us as we uncover the allure of Miami, from its pulsating nightlife to its serene hideaways, offering a glimpse into a world where magic and reality intertwine. The Birth of the "Magic City"Miami is often referred to as the "Magic City" due to its rapid growth and development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The term "Magic City" was coined by a local newspaper editor named Julia Tuttle. She created the term to describe the incredible transformation of Miami from a small, remote outpost into a thriving metropolis almost overnight.Julia Tuttle was a prominent Miami pioneer. She originally visited her parents in South Florida in 1875 and fell in love with what is now known as Biscayne Bay. She later purchased 640 acres at the mouth of the Miami River and returned as a widow to live there in 1891. She convinced Henry Flagler to bring his railroad to the Miami River, and over seven years she lived there, she worked to build the community and had a lot to do with transforming the region. In 1896, Miami was incorporated as a city. From there, the city experienced a significant boom in population, infrastructure, and economy during the early 20th century, fueled by the Florida East Coast Railway. The nickname still fits the city's vibrant atmosphere, diverse culture, and ongoing growth and innovation.Cuban Influence on MiamiCuba has had a significant influence on Miami, particularly due to waves of Cuban migration to the city, especially after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. It's shaped the city's identity, culture, economy, and politics in so many ways.PoliticsCuban exiles and their descendants have been actively involved in local, state, and national politics, shaping policies and perspectives on issues related to Cuba and Latin America. You feel like you are in another country!Cultural InfluenceCuban culture is in music and art, cuisine and language. Salsa music, mambo, and Afro-Cuban rhythms have bled into Miami's music scene, and Cuban artists have made the city vibrant and contributed greatly to the colorful art.CuisineCuban cuisine is all over Miami. The city has numerous Cuban restaurants and cafes serving authentic Cuban food. Some signature Cuban dishes include sandwiches, picadillo, and arroz con pollo.ArchitectureCuban influence & heritage can be seen in so much of Miami's architecture, particularly in neighborhoods like Little Havana - colorful Art Deco buildings & classic Spanish-style architecture.Language and DemographicsSpanish, particularly Cuban Spanish, is widely spoken in Miami.EconomyCuban migration has had a significant impact on Miami's economy, contributing to the growth of tourism, hospitality, and international trade. Many Cuban entrepreneurs have also established successful businesses in Miami, which has played a huge part in enriching the city's economic landscape and creating further diversity. The "Dark Side" of Miami and the Cocaine Cowboys Era.The Cocaine Cowboys era and drug trafficking had a significant impact on Miami during the 1970s and 1980s. It caused a surge of drug-related violence, crime, and corruption in Miami. Miami was the primary entry point for cocaine smuggling into the US for powerful drug cartels like the Medellín Cartel led by Pablo Escobar. This led to an explosion of wealth in Miami, led by the cartel individuals. It fueled a construction boom because drug profits were laundered through real estate investments, which led to the rapid development of luxury properties and businesses. However, it also contributed to a culture of excess, with conspicuous consumption and hedonism becoming more prevalent. Not to mention widespread violence as rival factions were fighting for control of the lucrative trade routes and markets.Law enforcement agencies really struggled to contain the violence and corruption associated with the drug trade. There were high-profile cases and efforts to crack down on drug trafficking networks, but it created "The Cocaine Cowboys era," which gave Miami a reputation as a city marked by both glamour and danger. It still lasts today.Myths About MiamiEveryone in Miami is WealthyMiami is home to many affluent individuals and neighborhoods, there is also significant socioeconomic diversity in the city. Many residents are working- or middle-class individuals who may not enjoy the lavish lifestyle often associated with Miami. Richer areas are Brickell, Key Biscayne, and parts of South Beach; Poorer areas are downtown and some parts of Wynwood.Miami is only about beaches and nightlife. While Miami is famous for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, it offers much more than that. It has a rich cultural scene, diverse neighborhoods, delicious cuisine, and a thriving arts community. You don't have to be a party animal to love Miami. All Miamians are Latino or Cuban. While Miami does have a large Hispanic population, including many Cuban-Americans, it is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world. You'll find people from various ethnicities and backgrounds living in Miami.Miami is Not Dangerous.Known by some as a "sin city," Miami can be dangerous, but not as dangerous as you may think. Miami is not on the FBI'S top 15 most dangerous cities list - which measures the violent crime rate and the highest cost of crime per capita, which includes instances of murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Like any major city, Miami has its share of crime, from drugs, gambling, etc, but it's unfair to label the entire city as unsafe. Many neighborhoods are safe and welcoming to residents and visitors. But as with any city, you must exercise common sense, and taking precautions is essential. You need to do your research, do not talk to strangers or get in cars with strangers, etc. Also, ignore creepy men trying to hit on you, or tell them no if they don't look too dangerous.Miami is all Glitz and Glamour. While Miami does have its glamorous side, with luxury hotels, high-end restaurants, and designer boutiques, it also has a laid-back, casual vibe. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the city without breaking the bank. You can explore parks, outdoor spaces, and museums and even go dining at local eateries and food trucks. There are free cultural events and art festivals as well. And don't forget the beaches are free (Key Biscayne, South Beach, Hollywood), minus the parking. Miami is only for the Young and Single. While Miami is known for its vibrant nightlife and party scene, it's also a great place to live for families, retirees, and people of all ages. The city offers excellent schools, diverse neighborhoods, and many activities for people of all ages and interests. You can't drive in Miami - The traffic is Too BadJust be careful where you park, and know that people honk a lot.The Best Areas in Miami for a Solo TravelerSouth BeachThis area is popular for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and diverse dining options. You'll find plenty of opportunities to meet people at bars, clubs, and social events. However, it can get crowded and rowdy at times, so staying vigilant is important.Downtown MiamiDowntown offers a mix of entertainment, dining, and cultural attractions. It's also close to popular destinations like Brickell and Wynwood, which are known for their lively nightlife scenes. Choose accommodations in well-reviewed hotels or reputable Airbnb listings.BrickellThis upscale neighborhood is known for its high-rise condos, sophisticated bars, and restaurants. It's a popular spot for young professionals and offers a relatively safe environment for solo travelers.WynwoodFamous for its street art and hipster vibe, Wynwood is home to trendy bars, breweries, and galleries. It's a great place to meet fellow travelers and locals interested in art and culture. Just be mindful of your surroundings, especially at night.Coconut GroveThis historic neighborhood has a more relaxed atmosphere than South Beach. It has scenic parks, waterfront dining, and boutique shops. It's a good option if you prefer a quieter environment but still want access to nightlife and social activities.Hotels VS Airbnbs in MiamiFor a solo traveler, a hotel is safer, but it can be pricier than Airbnb, depending on where you want to stay. Airbnbs tend to be much cheaper for a group.Unique Destinations to Visit in MiamiVizcaya Museum and GardensThis historic estate features stunning gardens, European-inspired architecture, and unique photo opportunities around every corner.Versace MansionThe Versace Mansion is where world-renowned Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace was murdered on July 15, 1997. He was shot outside his Miami Beach mansion by Andrew Cunanan, a serial killer who took his own life eight days later. His South Beach mansion is now a "killer" lunch spot, and it's a great deal. Guests can also stay there. However, it is a pricy hotel.Coral CastleThis mysterious structure was built by Edward Leedskalnin using 1,100 tons of coral rock. The method of construction remains a mystery.Wynwood Walls The Wynwood Walls is an outdoor museum that showcases large-scale works by some of the world's best-known street artists, making it a vibrant spot for unique and colorful photos.Venetian Pool This historic public swimming pool built in the 1920s featuring waterfalls, caves, and incredible landscaping, providing a picturesque setting for photos. The KampongThe Kampong Botanical Garden features a collection of tropical fruit trees and flowering plants.Oleta River State ParkOleta River State Park is Miami's largest urban park along the shores of Biscayne Bay. You can kayak, hike, and picnic among mangrove forests.Deering EstateThis historic landmark and estate has guided tours of the mansion and gardens, as well as access to scenic trails along the waterfront.Miami Beach Holocaust MemorialThe Holocaust Memorial is a moving tribute to the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, featuring sculptures and reflecting pools. The Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux Originally built in Spain in the 12th century, this monastery was dismantled and reconstructed in Miami, creating a unique architectural juxtaposition.Grapeland Water ParkThis water park features a quirky collection of sculptures and structures, including a giant pineapple and a shipwreck-themed play area. It provides fun and unusual photo opportunities.Key Biscayne Crandon ParkCrandon Park is home to a unique fossilized reef and the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse. It offers hiking, picnicking, and wildlife viewing opportunities.Miami City CemeteryThis cemetery, dating back to the 19th century, features historic gravesites, elaborate mausoleums, and lush landscaping, providing a fascinating glimpse into Miami's past.SportsMiami has a strong sports culture, with teams like the Miami Heat (NBA), Miami Dolphins (NFL), and Florida Marlins (now Miami Marlins, MLB).Day Trips from Miami Everglades National Park Everglades National Park is a short drive from Miami. It's a unique ecosystem full of wildlife. You can take an airboat ride to see alligators, birds, and other wildlife or explore the park's trails and visitor centers. It's great if you are not from Florida and are used to seeing our wildlife, and it's great for a family trip as well.Key WestWhile it's about a 3-4 hour drive from Miami, Key West is worth the trip for its charming atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and vibrant culture. You can visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, explore Duval Street, and relax by the water. Boat rides are fun as well.Fort LauderdaleOnly about a 30-minute drive from Miami, Fort Lauderdale has beautiful beaches, shopping, dining, and great cultural attractions. It also has Gulf Stream horse racing tracks, gambling, and the famous Hard Rock Guitar Hotel. Stroll along the Fort Lauderdale Beach promenade, visit the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, or take a gondola ride along the city's canals.Biscayne National ParkLocated just south of Miami, Biscayne National Park is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. You can go snorkeling or diving to explore the park's coral reefs, take a boat tour to see the historic lighthouse on Boca Chita Key, and enjoy spectacular views of the ocean.Wynwood Arts DistrictIf you're interested in art and culture, head to the Wynwood Arts District in Miami. This neighborhood is one of my favorite Miami spots and is known for its colorful street art, murals, galleries, boutiques, and super trendy restaurants and cafes.Coral Gables Coral Gables is a beautiful and upscale neighborhood in Miami, known for its Mediterranean Revival architecture, greenery, and historic landmarks like the Venetian Pool and the Biltmore Hotel. Spend the day exploring the shops and restaurants along Miracle Mile or visiting attractions like the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. How to Stay Safe in MiamiAreas of Miami to Avoid when VisitingHistorically known for its high crime rates, Overtown has seen some revitalization efforts in recent years but still may not be the safest area, especially at night. Liberty City is another neighborhood with a reputation for crime. While Little Havana is vibrant and culturally rich, there are many areas that are not safe, particularly at night. If you want to go, exercise caution and stick to well-lit, populated areas.Avoiding Certain Beaches at NightWhile Miami's beaches are beautiful during the day, most are unsafe after dark. Stick to well-populated areas and avoid isolated or poorly lit beach areas at night.Be Cautious of Scams and Tourist TrapsBe wary of overly aggressive street vendors, "free" tours that require a purchase at the end, and other similar schemes.Be Careful when Driving in Rush Hour TrafficIf possible, avoid driving during peak traffic times to prevent getting stuck in gridlock.Be Vigilant at NightWhile Miami's nightlife is legendary, some areas may be more prone to rowdiness and crime. Exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings, especially if you're out late at night. While Miami does have public transportation options like buses and the Metrorail, they are way less frequent and safe at night. Consider using rideshare services or taxis if you need to travel after dark, but don't get in an unregistered taxi, uber, or Lyft. Ask, "Who are you here for?" Miami can be a fun place to show off, and it's okay in certain areas like Brickell. Anywhere else, I would be extremely careful, and if you are new to the city, I would not wear your extremely fancy items. Cars also get broken into all the time, so do not leave things in your car. Better safe than sorry! In addition, don't take backroads at night.Bars can be safe to go into alone, but many female solo travelers get targeted in Miami, especially in bars and clubs. Don't take a drink from a stranger that you can't see being poured by the bartender. Also, men in Miami can be very aggressive, so be upfront with them and seek help from a bouncer if they will not leave you alone. What to Wear for A Night OutYour attire depends on where you are headed for the night. For clubs in Brickell and even South Beach, Ladies typically wear dresses or skirts and a top with heels, and guys wear nice shoes, buttoned-down short or long-sleeve shirts, and sometimes suits. Some clubs have strict "not too casual" dress code rules. For bars and any event in Wynwood, like a garage party, more casual clothes can be worn (e.g., rompers, shorts and tops, sneakers, and jeans and T-shirts for guys).Miami BeachesBeach Swimming in Miami When it comes to swimming in the waters off Miami's beaches, it's generally safe as long as you adhere to common-sense safety guidelines. While South Florida is known for its shark population, the risk of encountering a shark while swimming is very low. Most sharks are not interested in humans as prey and typically avoid interactions. Additionally, lifeguards and beach patrols in Miami are very vigilant about monitoring the waters and providing warnings or closures if any dangerous marine life is spotted.Favorite Miami BeachesMiami Beach is great for people-watching parties, meeting new people, good food, and all the action. It even has big events like pop up music festivals. For a more relaxed atmosphere, check out Key Biscayne. It is more relaxing, family-oriented, and has a great view of the Miami skyline. However, watch out for the "no-see-ems!" Beach TipsSome beaches, like South Beach, may experience higher theft rates, especially during peak tourist seasons when there are larger crowds. A few tips are to not leave valuables unattended, use lockers if available, and be mindful of your surroundings. Also, remember that local law enforcement and beach management often take measures to address theft. If you can not put items in a locker, do not bring valuables, and if you must bring valuables, like your phone and wallet, you can ask a normal-looking couple to watch them. It is taking a risk, but it has worked for me. Waterproof phone pouches are great for bringing a phone into the ocean. If you go into the water, stay where you can see your items. Do not let yourself drift far if you go into the water.Take the following precautions to ensure your safety while enjoying the beach:Swim in designated areas: Stick to beaches with lifeguards on duty and swim within the marked swimming zones.Avoid swimming alone: It's safer to swim with a buddy or in groups, especially in open waters.Stay alert: Be mindful of your surroundings while in the water and avoid areas with fishing activity or schools of baitfish, as these can attract sharks.Respect marine life: Avoid touching or approaching marine animals, including sharks, stingrays, and jellyfish.Follow beach safety guidelines: Pay attention to warning signs, flags, and instructions from lifeguards regarding water conditions and any potential hazards.Miami HurricanesIf you are visiting Miami when a hurricane hits, follow the steps below.Stay informed: Monitor local news, radio stations, or weather apps for updates on the hurricane's progress, including its projected path, intensity, and any evacuation orders or shelter information.Evacuation orders: Follow any evacuation orders issued by local authorities. Secure your accommodations: If you're staying at a hotel or rental property, inquire about their hurricane preparedness plans and follow any instructions provided by management. They may have protocols in place for guests during a storm.Stock up on supplies: Gather essential supplies such as non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents. Ensure you have enough supplies to last several days in case of power outages or limited access to stores.Prepare your belongings: Secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and any other items that could become projectiles in high winds. If you're staying in a rental property, follow any instructions provided by the owner or management on securing the premises.Charge devices: Make sure your cell phone and other electronic devices are fully charged in case of power outages. Consider purchasing portable chargers or external battery packs for backup power.Stay indoors during the storm: Once the hurricane arrives, remain indoors in a safe location away from windows and doors. Follow safety guidelines: Follow any safety guidelines provided by local authorities, such as avoiding flooded areas, staying away from downed power lines, and using caution when venturing outside after the storm has passed.Be prepared for the aftermath: After the hurricane has passed, be prepared for potential flooding, debris, and other hazards. Follow instructions from authorities regarding cleanup efforts and any additional safety precautions.Miami stands as a captivating blend of magic and reality, where the dreams of visionaries like Julia Tuttle collide with the gritty realities of history. From its inception as a fledgling settlement to its evolution into a global destination, Miami's story is one of resilience, diversity, and constant reinvention. While the echoes of the past, including the tumultuous Cocaine Cowboys era, add layers of complexity to its narrative, Miami continues to thrive as a beacon of creativity, opportunity, and cultural fusion. As visitors traverse its vibrant streets, bask on its sun-kissed shores, and immerse themselves in its diverse tapestry of experiences, they discover a city that defies expectations and invites exploration.

In this episode, we sit down with Arnaud to explore his remarkable journey as an entrepreneur. As a first-generation American with French roots, Arnaud inherited a passion for entrepreneurship from his parents, who were also business owners. From an early age, he immersed himself in the world of business, learning invaluable lessons while working alongside his parents.      Arnaud's entrepreneurial spirit was evident even in high school when he ventured into the world of DJing, laying the groundwork for his future ventures. His journey took a leap forward during his time at Duke University when he founded College Boxes, a moving and storage service tailored for college students. The success of College Boxes eventually culminated in its acquisition by U-Haul.      Returning to Miami in the early 2000s, Arnaud and a close friend embarked on his first real estate venture by acquiring small duplexes in the vibrant neighborhood of Little Havana. They began assembling properties and then flipped them to developers who would then build larger multifamily projects since zoning allowed for more density and height.       Arnaud's pursuit of excellence led him to pursue further education, earning an MBA from Harvard University. Armed with enhanced knowledge and expertise, he returned to Miami and founded 13th Floor Investments in 2008. Initially focusing on distressed assets, Arnaud pivoted the company's strategy in 2011 in response to changing market dynamics.      In 2013, Arnaud embarked on a groundbreaking project, collaborating with Inigo Ardid from Key International to develop 400 Sunny Isles, marking a significant milestone in his career. From that point forward  the rest is history.       Throughout the episode, Arnaud shares invaluable insights and wisdom gleaned from his experiences, emphasizing the importance of mentors, cultivating trusted relationships with investors, and leading by example as the water carrier for the 13th Floor Investments team. Tune in for a wealth of inspiration and practical advice from a seasoned entrepreneur and developer.

Live from STUDIO G- in the heart of America- I'm STEVE GRUBER- saying the things you wish you could -every day- Fighting for you from the Foxhole of Freedom and defending this great nation— AND looking forward to WINNING Again! This is THE STEVE GRUBER SHOW!   Here are 3 big things you need to know right now—   Number One— Thousands of people are without power after a series of strong winter storms rolled across the nation—and there are more on the way—with heavy snow and record breaking cold—but I'm sure they will tell us—HOTTEST month ever—of course—   Number Two— The uprising of German farmers is continuing—as they have flooded into Berlin—for a massive show of force by the people—and in opposition to the globalists— including the beginning of the Davos summit in Switzerland—   Number Three— Its Caucus Day in Iowa—hard to believe I know—   BUT here we are kicking off the 2024 run for President with former President Donald Trump on track right now to claim the prize in Iowa tonight—and then in just over a week in New Hampshire—and then it really is off to the races—   Trump can secure a mark in Iowa not measured in modern times tonight by getting more than 50% of the caucus votes—and if the pollsters can get it right for once—he is on track for that to happen—and could end up with somewhere between 52 and 54 percent of the vote—   We will of course be following that all day—   Then a win in New Hampshire on January 23rd—would pretty much wrap it up in his bid to become the 47th President—and again, if the polls can be believed—and the people turn out to vote—then he will win in a walkaway—   But the question I want you to consider right now—is what is up for grabs in 2024?    And my answer is everything!   I was in church yesterday—and the sermon focused on what we are facing in America—and honestly around the world as we are getting deeper into this new year—   Pastor Rick was on the money for me and Ivey—when he pointed out how confusing it must be growing up these days— because there are no rules, no guidelines, no absolutes, no guardrails—no, it is a free for all—where anything goes—   I mean those on the left tell kids they can pick any gender they want—and throw out meaningless jumbles of words and pretend they are a gender—when they don't mean anything at all— what does that do to a kid in elementary school?   They tell kids they can have everything—but own nothing—and not have to work very much—and if they do work too much is likely because they have some kind of special privilege—   I never thought I would see the day, when working hard and having a real work ethic would be derided as White Privilege—     They are teaching ever younger kids that there really are no rules like I said— do whatever you want, whatever feels good, it doesn't matter, anything goes—   And if your parents or anyone else tries to tell you differently they are wrong—    They flood the world with lies—and then scream at people like me for telling the truth every day—accusing us of spreading mis-information, dis-information or mal-information—   And of course all of this is rooted in racism—of course—    They flood the world with lies and accuse those telling the truth of doing what they are doing—   We are not.    People like me, are fighting for you—and them too—they just don't know it—because we fight for liberty and those God given inalienable rights!   Oh, and that Mal-information thing they have added recently—just means they don't like it—not that its wrong—it's just not what they want to hear—so they give it an ominous sounding label to scare off anyone with any intellectual curiosity—who are afraid of getting smeared with some label from the left—   Then they tell the kids—there are no rules at all—well except for freedom and liberty—and those must be cut back at all costs—because freedom is dangerous— You see, they claim that having a free-market, capitalist system somehow breeds exploitation of the working class—when in fact the working class has it better today than ever—if you don't think so, look around—   More people live longer, more productive lives than at any time in human history—and much of that success—if not all of it can be traced back to some radical idealists with a crazy idea back in 1776—that the people should decide who is in charge and how things are going to be run— and not just be servants to the government—that We The People, ARE the government—   And Adam Smith model of economic freedom laid out in The Wealth of Nations—set us on a path to create freedom—NOT JUST in America—but all over the world—and it has worked miracles in lifting people up—   It is perfect? No. Do people cheat and take advantage of the system at the expense of others? Yes.   BUT that happens in communist countries and under dictators far more, and far worse than it does here—   Poverty in America is real—very real, BUT I can tell you, it doesn't look anything like the poverty I have seen first-hand in places like South Africa—or much closer to home in Mexico—   If you want the easiest side by side comparison in world history—just look at North and South Korea—and you can measure by any metric and freedom and free market capitalism win every single time—   Compare the dire straits of the people in Havana, Cuba—to the people living in Little Havana in Miami—and you can see in one example after another how superior free markets are free people are—   The truth is available to anyone interested in seeing it— and a simple education by Milton Friedman or Henry Hazlitt on basic economics should be required—BUT there simply isn't enough time after going over preferred pronouns—and explaining that America is a bad place that takes advantage of people—and should never be celebrated—   So, they lie—and tell the kids that socialism, and Marxism are wonderful—and the globalists are looking out for them—and if we can just burn the American Constitution we will be on the road to a better world—   That of course is the biggest lie of all—   And in order to keep it going, they rely on censorship and the destruction of Free Speech—they say words are weapons and we must silence anyone who doesn't speak the truth—and of course, they will be the sole arbiters of what is truth and what is not—    Maybe the biggest goal of the Davos crowd—and those running wild at the UN and WEF is to silence any and all dissent—I mean in no time at all we can be as free as China, Russia—and if we are really lucky—North Korea—   Oh, and I forgot the big lie at the border—where literally millions of people have flowed in, in just 3 years—creating havoc in the streets and a lot of anger too—   BUT everyone is told two big lies—first, the border is secure—and that comes from the President himself, well it comes from somebody—and second—and MORE important—if you don't support the invasion of your country by millions of strangers you are a xenophobe and a racist—   You are barely human if you believe in America First! So, what is up for grabs in 2024—everything you care about—and everything I care about—   I'm sorry BUT you do not have the luxury of sitting on the sidelines—and throwing out snarky comments on social media—NO, you actually have to get involved—YOU MUST VOTE—that is the simplest and most important thing you can do—   If you fail to cast a vote—they have already won!   And if you are not clear on what this gathering of globalists is all about in Davos—here is what you need to understand:   So lets look at Iowa—because right now it looks like the Trump Train is rolling in—and is going to be rolling out with a huge and possibly historic win—

I got to spend a lunch break with my Daniel and Rosa Figueredo, the owners of Sanguich de Miami - a Cuban Sandwich Shop in Little Havana specializing in gourmet Cuban sandwiches & milkshakes. Serving up authentic, handcrafted Cuban sanguiches! They are also 2022-2023- Michelin Bib Gourmand recipients. I spoke to Daniel and Rosa about how they started Sanguich and how they went from doing pan con lechon sandwiches at an music festival to owning a location in Little Havana and quitting their very lucrative corporate jobs to make sandwiches. We spoke about they brine the ham for days, marinate lechon for 24 hours; make the mustard, pickles in house and also their own bread recipe used that they then brush the bread with lard that they render down, before pressing them all together to a crisp. I spoke to them how Rosa and Daniel balance each other and how they have grown the business and spent over a year researching their recipes and sacrifices made to make Sanguich happen. We also spoke to Daniel about how they have grown the bedrock of the business and now they are going and growing. We also talk about the importance of Community over Competition. I loved chatting with them and listening to their inspiring story. Not to mention their food is so good- heck people can order it on GoldBelly. He firmly believes that as a large city, Miami needs someone who can approach things differently, with integrity and a deep love for the city. His goal is to eliminate personal agendas and genuinely prioritize the well-being of the city and its residents. Sebastian Rusk, together with Marvin, firmly believes that elected officials should come from the community they represent and genuinely want to help the residents. They see politicians as a beacon of hope, someone who can bring about positive change by putting the needs of the community first. They want to make the political system more accessible and understandable for everyone, enabling individuals to actively participate in shaping their communities.Overall, this episode highlights the importance of caring for the community, working without personal agendas, and prioritizing the needs of the residents, and by doing so, they can bring about positive change and create a more inclusive and responsive political system.QUOTES:“But I really think that, especially with Miami being just a, just a gigantic city. And one of the big ones throughout the entire nation on here, there has to be someone to step in and say, we're going to do this different. We're going to do this, with integrity. We're going to do this with deep passion for the city that we live in. We're going to do this without agendas.” - Sebastian Rusk“That's how you inflict change is that you're, you know, from a civic perspective, you've been able to cultivate, a community of people that believe in what you're doing and understand your message and see eye to eye with that. And then in turn, when it turns political, you've already got that base. They're a true base.” - Sebastian Rusk"Change is a word that can trigger a lot of people. It's more about giving the power back to the people." - Marvin Tapia"We need a commissioner that's going to walk in through the front door with his head held up high, and not one that's going to walk out the back door in handcuffs." - Marvin TapiaThis is not going to be a win for me. Elián González was just five years old when he was found clinging to an inner tube off the coast of Florida on 25th November, 1999. His mother, step-father, and all the other Cuban migrants who had been attempting to cross to the United States with him were lost at sea. Elián's future then became a matter of high-stakes diplomacy between the two Cold War countries: should he be granted residency with his extended family in Little Havana, or returned back to actual Havana to the arms of his father? In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly revisit the intense 24-hour news cycle that took hold over this seemingly small story; explain why even Gloria Estefan got caught up in the furore; and reveal how Alan Diaz went about taking his Pulitzer prize-winning photo of the FBI raid on Elián's uncle's home…   Further Reading: • ‘Elián González: How Cuba and the U.S. fought over a child in an international tug-of-war' (The Washington Post, 2019): https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2019/11/25/federal-agents-seized-year-old-elin-gonzlez-gunpoint-custody-battle-raged-months/ • ‘Opinion | The Future of Elián González' (The New York Times, 1999): https://www.nytimes.com/1999/11/30/opinion/the-future-of-elian-gonzalez.html?searchResultPosition=4 • ‘Elián González Believes He Would Have Been Used To Make Cuba Look Bad' (CBS, 2015): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEgjpOK9t64 #US #90s #Cuba We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

This week we will honor the life and legacy of Capt. Joe Gonzalez who recently passed away by replaying the 2 podcasts that I was fortunate enough to do with him.  Today we will replay the full length interview with Joe recorded from his home in Little Havana surrounded by his family. Joe's enthusiasm was infectious and his knowledge broad and specific. I was so happy to have him on the podcast because he was on the original short list of legendary fishermen that I wanted to sit down with. Whatever industry you may be in, it is common to hear of the legends. Those people whose name continues to surface in conversations with other customers or competitors. In the inshore fishing business, Capt. Joe Gonzalez is one of those people. Despite working 150 miles away from one another, I heard Joe's name and stories on the regular. His reputation preceded him as a professional who might actually have some Bonefish DNA mixed in with his.  Many have said that Joe knows all the bonefish in Biscayne Bay. This may be true but that is not what makes a great reputation. There is much more to becoming a legendary Captain. Like most of the legends I know, Joe stayed curious and sought to learn more about all things fishing in order to continue to improve. The sportfishing industry, Biscayne Bay, the clients, friends and family of Joe Gonzalez lost a great one recently. Thank you for the influence you had over so many of us, Joe. You were one of a kind. Im thankful to have known you and I wish the very best for your family. RIP Capt. Joe Gonzalez Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
