The city of Dallas is launching a nationwide search to find its next police chief following the departure of Eddie García. In other news, Lewisville ISD canceled Monday classes and city utility customers were told to boil their water before using it following a water main failure Saturday night. According to a statement on the Lewisville city website, water service has been restored to all customers, but officials said the system needs to be flushed and tested before the boil water order can be lifted; Gov. Greg Abbott said Sunday he wants lawmakers to focus on subsidizing private school tuition, finding new sources of water, limiting bail for violent offenses, strengthening career training, and beefing up the state's cybersecurity systems. Abbott also recommended that lawmakers devote some of the state budget — which includes a $24 billion surplus — to property tax relief, merit raises for teachers, border security, the power grid and school safety. And 'mourners' gathered outside American Airlines Arena on Sunday to mourn the loss of the trade of Dallas Mavericks player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Learn more about your ad choices. How we measure success in Texas public schools? Right now, standardized testing and an A-F accountability system that assigns grades to campuses is used almost entirely to grade our schools. Accountability, and the transparency it brings, is essential. We need to make sure the 5.4 million students in Texas public schools are provided with the tools they need to eventually enter the workforce, and that taxpayer money is being put to good use. But what if we had a system that looked at more than how students do on one test on one day? What if we decided that what makes a “good school” goes beyond test scores and we evaluated how districts prepare students for life and career through things like early childhood education, dual language, fine arts, and extra-curricular programs? Or the many crucial resources public schools provide to ensure the well-being of their students, like meals, mental health services, and campus security? This is a wholly achievable idea — and one that had momentum and bipartisan support during the most recent legislative session. But, like so many other worthy public education issues, accountability and assessment reforms went down in the battle over private school vouchers during the 88th Session. In this episode, hear from Lori Rapp, Superintendent at Lewisville ISD; Jacqueline Martinex, Former 4th grade teacher at Canutillo ISD; Daniel Saenz, CEO of Nieto Technology Partners; Paola Gonzalez Fusilier, School Board Trustee at Pasadena ISD; and Dr. Libby Cohen, Senior Director of Advocacy at Raise Your Hand Texas, each discusses assessment and accountability from their unique perspectives.
I have often said that "a school board member is the most important elected position," and how true we have seen that to be with parents now labeled "domestic terrorists" just for exercising their right to address our school boards and city councils. In this episode, we are joined by Ashley Jones, who is running for Lewisville ISD school board. For more about Ashley: Ashley4LISD.com This is a public episode. Bill Dwyer is running for Van City Council for Place 4 Here is links to Bill's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100078606619001 Below is Bill's Introduction: My name is Bill Dwyer and I am running for Van City Council Place 4. I know a lot of you don't know who I am, so let me introduce myself. My wife Trish and I have been residents of Van for 14 years and part of the Van ISD Community for 20 plus years. We raised our 4 kids here and enjoy our grandchildren's visits. Before moving to Van proper, I lived in Ben Wheeler for a decade, volunteering on the Ben Wheeler Fire Department and serving as the training captain and serving the community. Being elected to the Van City Council will allow me to continue my dedication and service to our community. I am not a politician, just a concerned citizen and tax payer that wants to represent and serve our city, to keep Van the best city to live and raise a family. The city of Van is here to serve you, not the other way around. Too often, the objections of the community are not heard, often put aside for special interests and pet projects. I want to ensure that every citizen is heard, that every complaint is handled efficiently, with respect and courteously. I will not accept any donations, funding my campaign myself, keeping me accountable to only you, the citizens of Van. As a project manager for a multimillion dollar industrial and architectural company, working on projects for such clients as Lewisville ISD, Frito Lay and Medical City of Dallas, as well as being a small business owner, I bring real world experience and a unique skill set to the city Council. Now being retired, provides me the luxury of giving the city council and the city of my full dedication and attention. Our infrastructure has long needed repairs and upgrades. We have new homes being built with an infrastructure that can barely support the current residents. I plan to work with our city and county to set and obtain upgrade goals to bring our city's roads and water up to residents' standards. Van has one neighborhood watch program which I was lucky enough to be included in. I want to work with the current watch captain and Van PD to implement neighborhood watches in all the neighborhoods in van. To build on and strengthen our neighbor looking out for neighbor community we have always counted on. I also plan to work to make and keep the actions and decisions of the city council as transparent and professional as possible. I believe that our elected officials are responsible for much more than the business workings of our city. They are representatives of our city and our values, leaders in the community. We should be setting a fine example for our residents, and those outside looking in, not to mention our younger generation, who will be the future leaders of our city. I would be honored to earn your vote. Together we can and will keep Van the best city to live and raise a family. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/clydehays/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/clydehays/support
