Let's Talk Episode 96 | Transition in Ministerial Roles

Let's Talk with Sanctuary

Send us a textToday's subject is one you'll probably need to reference multiple times over the course of your life and ministry journey as transition is unavoidable for every single human. And the unfortunate thing about transition—whether it's personally, ministerially, relationally—is that often we are ill-prepared for it when it comes upon us. But there is a way to prepare your heart, to anticipate when it's time to make a change, and some practical steps you can take to make the journey a little smoother. Take a listen as guest Mike Buie shares from his four decades of ministerial and marketplace experiences with transition.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mike and Pam Buie have lived in Oklahoma, serving in a lead pastor role, for nearly 30 years at CrossPoint Church in Sand Springs, just outside Tulsa, Oklahoma. Prior to moving to Oklahoma, Mike served two different churches in Texas as an associate pastor, through which he met his wife Pam. Shortly after marrying, Mike and Pam moved to the Tulsa area upon hearing a word from the Lord that He had ministry for them in Oklahoma. After a short few years serving under pastoral leadership at Christian Chapel in Tulsa, 1989 brought an opportunity to pastor what was then known as Cathedral of Praise, now CrossPoint. The church had gone through some dark days, and the future was uncertain. When Mike came to serve the church, he said, “If we are willing to take care of God's business, then He will take care of the church's business.” Out of that statement a vision for a strong mission program was born. Today the church continues with its strong mission emphasis, locally and globally. In 2019, after retiring from CrossPoint, Mike and Pam returned to Christian Chapel. They started hosting and leading home groups and teaching various discipleship classes on Wednesday night, which prompted lead pastor Chris Dow's invitation for Mike to join his staff as a part-time associate pastor. As an associate pastor, Mike is doing work often associated with a connections pastor. He now has 65 people serving on the guest service team for all three services, follows up with new families, and teaches the membership class.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Connect with today's guest, Mike Buie:Email: mike@christianchapel.comFeatured: Learn about Let's RetreatFight the Holiday Hype BlogMany thanks to our host, Bridgette Tomlin, and engineer Justin Lynn of Justin Lynn Music. We're always down for s'more cabin time. Today we are discussing The Creekside Cabin in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. At the Creekside cabin in Sand Springs, you can reconnect with nature. This off-grid cabin is a unique experience that you can't get anywhere else and at a price that is unbelievable. Seriously, it's off-grid which means you have to park and hike in. Solar powered lights and a compost toilet are also part of this tiny house experience. A propane heater is available during colder months for an extra $15/night.  The space is cute and your pictures will be the envy of Instagram. Truly an off-grid experience. Please consider the weather when booking because the cabin has no HVAC and is at the whim of the weather. You will be using a compost toilet and an outdoor shower is available. Sand Springs is Oklahoma's only planned industrial town. In 1907, oilman Charles Page founded the town as an envisioned haven for orphans and widows. Proximity to Tulsa has fueled Sand Spring's growth over the years. Today, however, the town is developing its own distinctive character, stemming from its nexus of cultural sites and natural treasures. The 1300-acre Keystone Ancient Forest is home to 300-year-old cedars and 400 and 500-year-old post-oak trees, all predating the birth of the U.S. More of the area's natural beauty and recreational opportunities are found in Keystone State Park, a family fun haven featuring 22 lake-view cabins with fireplaces, picnic areas, tent campsites, a children's fishing pond and hiking trails.    News Story from the Daily Mail: Subscribe to the Only in OK Show. #TravelOK #onlyinokshow #Oklahoma #MadeinOklahoma #oklaproud #podcast #okherewego #traveloklahoma

This is part 2 of a 2 part series.  In this episode, Oscar and I  talk adventure and off-road motorcycle riding. We love riding our Harley's cross country and that will certainly continue. But, we have an overall passion for all motorcycles and all types of riding. I'd have one of every sort of motorcycle if I could afford it.  Check out my YouTube video titled: "I Just Bought & Rode My First Adventure Motorcycle? Am I Hooked?" Several of us here at Law Abiding Biker™ Media have been getting into adventure and off-road motorcycle riding, so we wanted to talk about it. We know that many listeners also ride street and off-road motorcycles. We talk from a perspective of what it's like getting into this sort of off-road adventure riding and we are by no means experts. We are learning as we go and having a blast.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Adventure motorcycle riding allows you to explore well beyond those paved roads and opens up many possibilities. Like street motorcycles, there is a ton to learn and know about adventure motorcycles and that is what Oscar and I try to break down in this podcast episode. There are different terms for these types of motorcycles such as adventure, off-road, dual-sport, or enduro and that can be confusing and overwhelming when getting started. And, these terms can cross-over into each other is what I've come to learn.   CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! There are so many questions to be asked when getting into adventure and off-road motorcycle riding. What type of riding are you going to do? More street or more off-road? How well does the bike ride or handle off-road or street? Are you riding off-road technical trails or mainly fire roads? How much power do you want or need? How reliable is the bike you're getting? How far do you plan on riding? Can you put luggage/bags on the bike? How comfortable is the bike for longer rides? How big is the fuel tank, so you can ride further? What type of tires does the bike have? How many aftermarket parts are made for the bike? And the list goes on from there. That is what Oscar and I discuss in-depth, so listen in to get all the details.  New Free Video Mentioned:  Video-How to Remove the Gas Tank on an Indian MotorcycleTouring Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. The voice you just heard is Maggie Hoey. For the past few years, she’s served as the executive director of TYPROS, one of the largest, most organized young professional organizations in the nation. In that role, she she’s worked to provide young professionals from all professions with opportunities to build relationships with community, business and government leaders and give a voice and outlet for creating change. We dive right into the initiatives and tactics TYPROS is using to recruit and retain young professionals as the organization enters its 15th year. Maggie does a great job explaining how the organization uses data-driven strategies and how TYPROs has evolved and adapted much like our city has over the same timespan. A couple weeks after our interview Maggie announced she had changed roles. Starting in January, she will be the assistant director of the Downtown Coordinating Council. She will be responsible for developing and executing an annual programming and activation plan for Downtown and will oversee communications and outreach initiatives. She will also support strategic and organizational planning initiatives for Downtown and the DCC.As you’ll hear in our conversation, we talk about the importance of downtown’s continued revitalization and the role it plays in creating a successful future for Tulsa. It just goes to show why she’s the perfect fit for her new role. We’re lucky to have her working as hard as she does to make Tulsa a better place.Maggie is a native of Sand Springs and now lives in midtown Tulsa. She graduated with a bachelor’s of science from Oklahoma State University and earned her master’s in public administration at OU-Tulsa. Prior to her time with TYPROs Maggie worked in development and marketing for local nonprofits, including the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, Tulsa Habitat for Humanity and Iron Gate. We discuss her career and her hobbies, which includes her passion for reading. I had a great time getting to know Maggie and learning from her. The future is bright for her. Following that conversation, I’m excited to bring on Tulsa Voice editor Blayklee Freed and Voice Digital Editor Kyra Bruce to talk about the changes occurring in the new year. Starting in January, The Voice will merge with TulsaPeople Magazine to create an expanded magazine with even more arts and entertainment coverage plus an even stronger presence online at TulsaPeople.com. As part of those changes, I’m excited to be bringing Kyra on to curate the songs we share at the end of each episode. Speaking of music, closing out this final episode of 2019 is the excellent new song “Rattlesnake Kate” by the Carter Sampson Trio. You’ll definitely want to give it a listen. More on them later. It’s been a great year, and I really appreciate you listening. We’re already deep into planning next year’s episodes and will get it going on New Year’s Day.Alright, let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the landing on the moon, Oklahomans should know that a young man who was born in Okemah, Oklahoma and grew up in Sand Springs was on the support crew for Apollo 11. The support crew maintained the flight plan, checklists and developed procedures for emergency situations for the prime and backup crews. The support crew consisted of Ken Mattingly, Ronald Evans and Bill Pogue. Bill Pogue was ten years old while standing in an Oklahoma cotton field when he observed a DC-2 fly over and at that moment he “got the urge to be a pilot”.Of course, the prime crew for Apollo 11 consisted of the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, along with Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. In chapter nine of our oral history interview with Bill Pogue, Bill talked about his relationship with Neil Armstrong. You can hear Bill’s story from his days in Sand Springs, to a combat tour in Korea, his life with the Thunderbirds and his selection to be on the support crews for Apollo 7, 11, and 14.

If you watch too much news, you may believe communities across America are at odds with their local police agencies. But on this episode of the Pinpoint podcast, we highlight one area where the agency and community aren’t just coexisting, but cooperating in harmony. Chief Carter of the Sand Springs Police Department in Oklahoma has led the town in creating a community policing plan that aligns policing plans to the values of the community. In 2018, Chief Carter accepted the IACP/Cisco Leadership in Community Policing Award on behalf of the agency. His agency proactively set a plan in motion after the 2014 Furgeson incident to ensure a safer, more vibrant community. Chief Carter gave us his plan, and how we can all learn from their strategy. Chief Carter has been with the Sand Springs PD for over 26 years, and he was also a graduate of the 221st FBI National Academy.

For thousands of years, much of western Nevada was submerged under the waters of ancient Lake Lahontan. About 4,000 years ago, climate change caused the waters to recede and the area around what is now Fallon, Nevada became a dry desert playa. Prevailing winds from the west blew millions of tons of sand from this playa into a 500-foot high pile of sand now known as Sand Mountain. In modern times, Sand Mountain became an attraction to dune buggy enthusiasts and it became a popular recreation destination. Continue reading →

Multi-talented performer Sam Harris joins host Robin Milling for a backstage chat about his one-man musical, 'Ham: A Musical Memoir,' now playing at Theater 511 at Ars Nova in New York City. Directed by Billy Porter, featuring pianist Todd Schroeder, the show is based on his autobiography, 'Ham: Slices of A Life.' On stage Sam expertly tells stories, speaking about his life's journey from boyhood to the present; whether in song or candid monologues. He tells Robin he's embraced the term, 'ham,' recalling his earliest performance at three singing The Star Spangled Banner at a football game in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Sam says performing is everything to him. 'It was my coping mechanism being a little bit of a different kind of kid growing up in rural, Baptist South; the buckle of the bible belt! For a burgeoning gay showbusiness kid it was a little freaky especially being born in the early 60s.' And for those not born in the 60s, Star Search was the American Idol of it's day, where Sam won the 1983 grand champion singer with his rousing rendition of 'Over The Rainbow.'  He tells Robin he accepts the legacy, along with his other accomplishments as an actor, a writer, and a recording aritst. Sam talks about the cathartic experience he feels exorcising his demons on stage, although some things were left in the book such as his alcoholism; celebrating 11 years sober. Even though the show is personal to his life experience, he tells Robin it's universal. 'I don't think there's anybody who doesn't feel outside. I don't think there's anybody who doesn't need to be told 'you're enough.'' For more about Sam visit http://www.samharris.com/
