Everyone is focused on the Presidential race, for obvious reasons - and most Texans who take an even slightly broader view of the election might get as far as unseating Ted Cruz. There's a LOT more at play and at stake this November, and our ideological foes in the Republican Party are certainly engaged at the school board level - where control over the funding, educational policies and curriculum content of our public schools primarily lies. We have five terrific Democratic nominees for the Texas State Board of Education, and in this talk we get the views of two of them in regard to the task at hand. Rayna Glasser, running for SBOE District 11, and Morgan Kirkpatrick, in the race for SBOE District 15, share their common sense views on how Texas public schools need to change, and how to resist the GOP's assault on them via vouchers, encroaching religious content, and more. Pat Hardy, Texas State Board of Education District 11 continues her discussion with Lynn Davenport. After being on the board for 20 years, she's seen how the educational system works, and helps us see how it all works at the state level. The SBOE is responsible for the Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills [TEKS]- which all school districts follow - and Permanent School Fund, totalling 55 billion dollars. Pat is comfortable about how the Permanent School Fund, has operated over the years under the stewardship of Holland Timmons and Thomas Maynard. Lynn calls out conflict of interest because Abbott-appointed Todd Williams' nonprofit, Commit, is paid for by the Texas Education Agency. He should reveal his investments and disclose his relationship to the TEA. Enjoy this conversation that takes you into the operations of our scholastic government. How are we approving curriculum resources? How is data being secured? How does this patronage network work nationwide? If the State Board is not in charge of these decisions, who is protecting the influence on our children? Millions are flooding through the TEA right now, how can we understand how it is being used? In this episode of Social Impact Podcast with Lynn Davenport, Lynn talks with Pat Hardy, Texas State Board of Education for District 11, to disuss the proposed new standards for K-12 social studiesk being decided August 1, 2022. Before this SBOE meeting on August 1st, you can register for in person testimony beginning July 28, at 8a.m. and closing July 29, at 5p.m. "The Texas State Board of Education will meet August 1, for a special meeting to discuss Social Studies standards for all K-12 students in Texas public schools. The board will meet to discuss an updated draft of the high school standards that were discussed in June. Additionally, TEA has published the Social Studies standards for students in grades Kindergarten through 7th grade that will be discussed at the SBOE meeting for the first time.Despite the standards for high school being revised, there are still concerns with the current draft of standards. For more details about what Texas Values testified about in June, contact info@txvalues.org. It appears that the SBOE is moving forward with getting rid of Texas history for 4th grade students. PHARR, Texas - A candidate for State Board of Education in south Texas says he will push for teacher pay raises if elected to office. Victor Perez acknowledges that funding for pay raises does not ordinarily come from SBOE. Rather, local districts raise money through property taxes and the Legislature provides additional funds based upon student attendance. However, the former school principal, teacher and coach says he will have influence in Austin that some of his election opponents lack.“The State Board does have funding. It has an account to fund stipends or teacher pay raises. You work with TEA (Texas Education Agency) on things like this,” Perez said.Perez is a Pharr native running as a Democrat for the open District 2 slot on the SBOE. The district is anchored in Hidalgo County. Perez recently gave a podcast interview to the Rio Grande Guardian about his candidacy. He also agreed to a livestream with us. “One thing I did not mention (in the livestream), is I have access to state representatives and senators, I have access to the Governor's office. None of my opponents have that,” Perez said.“Having direct access and direct phone numbers to these individuals… people need to understand how these things work. If I can push, and push, and push, whether it is TEA, or the local districts, I will.”Perez touted the endorsements of state Sen. Eddie Lucio, state Sen. Juan Hinojosa, state Rep. Terry Canales, Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, and others.
The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Don't be fooled by the Texas Tribune's reporting on what seems Texas Democratic Party hypocrisy on “diversity.” If it were a straight story it would have run when filing closed. Instead it's a story from the AOC-style Left to try and get more “diverse”candidates to file in the primary. Also, it is another in a long line of stories that make it seem that Republicans are just getting serious about outreach to minorities in the last few years. The Texas GOP has been working hard on such, not always very well I'll admit, since the late 1980's and heavily since the early 1990's. Also, Fifth in Texas House seniority, Rep. Garnet Coleman (HD147) has announce that he will not run again. That makes 23 House members not running for reelection.Lubbock's race for HD84 could be the most robust race the city's seen since retiring state Rep. John Frullo orginally ran. Self-described “pro-life, pro-liberty Republican” David Glasheen held a well attended campaign launch this week ensuring a race between strong candidates who are both military veterans. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Texas State Board of Education making right moves on “health” textbooks but many on the Left, including the media, are purposefully confusing health books with materials on sex education which is a separate issue under Texas law. And, other news of Texas.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. I am not in a Car today but I take a few moments at the end of day 1 of the NYSECA conference to talk to the first woman to lead NYSBOE Kristen Zebrowski Stavisky. We talk about the changes at the SBOE and her reason for moving up. Enjoy.
The Texas State Board of Education is revising the Science and Health/Sexual Education standards. The SBOE is engaged in erasure of climate change and refusal to include any acknowledgement of LGBTQIA+ community. Science and Sex Ed teacher Geoff Carlisle explains how people can let their voices be heard in this curriculum update and why inclusive standards are so important. Candace and Cuitlahuac also bring you Hot Takes on the latest Covid-19 pandemic re-opening news, reflect on the results of the school board election. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/aisdxp/message

Question to John Hood and Chris Fitzsimon – Judicial Watch, a conservative leaning think tank organization based in Washington DC has filed suit against the SBOE alleging the state has violated federal law by not maintaining their voter files to current standards. Is this about maintaining the voter files or is it an effort to keep people from voting? Meanwhile the liberal-leaning Southern Coalition are suing in federal court saying the state hasn’t done enough to open up the voter registration process. This lawsuit is technical in nature but does it have merit?
Thank you for tuning into Latino Politics and News. I'm Tony Diaz. We are recording remotely for broadcast on Tuesday, April 28, 2020. Today, we talk to candidates campaigning in the upcoming primary election on July 14. Remember that date. Tell your friends. At the top of the show, we'll speak with Anna Eastman. She won the special election for Texas State Representative seat 148, just in time to get into a primary election for that same seat. That was the seat formerly held by Jessica Farrar, who retired. During the second half of the show, we'll speak with Michelle Palmer, a Democrat candidate for Texas State Board of Education Seat 6, formerly held by Republican Donna Bahoric, who is retiring. Will remember her name from the Librotraficante's campaigns to endorse Mexican American Studies. And we begin the program with news impacting our community. Nationally: President Trump's recent Executive order, which he claimed he signed to "save American jobs" seems more like a campaign slogan. The Center for Disease Controls already outlined many of the policies regarding immigration meant to control the spread of COVID 19. It seems that the president wanted to take some of the credit for those policies. It is not clear how the president can claim that this executive order fights the coronavirus epidemic or saves American jobs. Additionally, after reading the executive order and consulting nationally board-certified immigration lawyers, only a small pool of visa applicants will be impacted. This executive order does not clearly save or create jobs. It looks like an attempt to scapegoat immigrants. On the other hand, if you read the bill, it implies that farmworkers and immigrants who are working as first responders are essential. The executive order directly states those persons won't be affected. That implies they are essential. Of course, President Trump doesn't mention that. He also doesn't mention exactly which jobs are saved? I am sure that any American who wants to pick tomatoes or alfalfa will be more than welcome by farmers who need the labor. Yes, families are having financial difficulties. This executive order does not address those concerns. The Trump administration should dedicate its time to helping families who have rent due May 1 and small and mid-sized businesses that create jobs in our communities. DACA Students left out. Trump appointee Secretary of Education Devoss excluded DREAMERS from Emergency Education Grants. This will have an impact on schools in Texas where DREAMERS attend school, legally work, and pay taxes. All Texas students should have access to these funds, especially as DACA recipients must, by definition, comply with all laws, and are also on the front lines as essential workers fighting the COVID 19 epidemic. Thanks to our crews: Our co-hosts founder and director of Nuestra Palabra- Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante. Producer: Leti Lopez Rodrigo Bravo, who mixed the show remotely Claudia Soler Alfonso, MD.
