I'm so excited to share a conversation with you about kombucha and operations - two of my favorite topics! I recently was the moderator for a session that was held at UCLA Anderson by The Food & Agriculture Business Association for a group of MBA candidates where I had a fireside chat with Justin Trout, co-founder and former COO of Health-Ade Kombucha. In this conversation, Justin dives into the nitty gritty, behind-the-scenes stories about growing a kombucha business from a single farmers market to almost 50,000 retail doors during his tenure as COO and you get some snippets from me about growing LivBar. Listen in to learn the stages of Health-Ade's growth, the decision to self-manufacture, the process of transitioning from doing operations work to managing a team of operations personnel, first operations hires, overcoming a year with over 2,000 employees turning over, implementing an ERP system, discerning which experts to listen to, where Justin draws inspiration and why he loves operations, and more.
In this episode of The Physical Product Movement Podcast, Jessi Freitag, a Business Operations Consultant, Podcast Host, and Producer at Startup CPG and Iroh's Corner, shares some great insights from an operations perspective. She was previously the Director of Marketing and Operations at LivBar, where she helped the company grow from manufacturing in a small room to a 12,000 square foot facility. Jessi talks about the advantages and drawbacks of manufacturing in-house and how the operations team works with marketing and sales to scale the brand. We also dive into the exciting efficiencies you can find when looking for small operations improvements every day and a lot more.

Less than a year ago, I (Host Jessi) had an insurance emergency at LivBar. I searched "insurance" in the Startup CPG slack and found Danielle Holyoake's name. I sent her a quick email and we jumped on a call. In record time, she solved a problem that other brokers had told me wasn't possible (full story in the episode!). I was so excited when Amelia Risk became a proud partner of Startup CPG because it meant we could do a podcast episode packed with game-changing knowledge. Danielle, is the COO and co-founder of Amelia Risk, the better-for-you insurance broker. Listen in as Danielle shares the key roles of an insurance broker, the most common types of insurance applicable to CPG and when they become relevant (think product liability, workers comp, D&O, recall, general liability), navigating insurance requirements for retailers, how to find the best policies, how umbrella insurance might not be what you think it is, and more. Amelia Risk is a proud sponsor of Startup CPG. Among his many accolades, he founded the world's first university angel investment fund and had his entrepreneurship class ranked in the top 10 in the US by Inc. Magazine. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: Wade Brooks explains his entrance to the food industry and how LivBar was started How LivBar has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and what the brand did to pivot The challenges many CPG brands have been facing due to limited sampling and demoing How Wade's background in academia has helped his entrepreneurial career Steve and Wade talk about the trend with entrepreneurs who transition from the tech industry to the CPG industry The six characteristics of a viable brand that's worthy of investment The first things Wade did after joining LivBar and what he learned from the experience How Wade's teaching methods have changed since earning an MBA What are the benefits of having an omni-channel strategy? Wade talks about his company's future expansion plans and where to learn more about them Wade's advice to fellow entrepreneurs on winning investors In this episode… According to Wade Brooks, every viable and investable brand has six key characteristics. If a business is feasible, reachable, and valuable, it's considered a good lifestyle business. This means that the brand understands what its customers want, knows how to connect with them, and can satisfy their needs by offering them value for their money. On the other hand, if a business is scalable, durable, and sellable, then it is considered worthy of investment. These characteristics mean that the brand has the potential to grow into the future, increase its value and maintain a good position to compete with large brands. In this episode of the NexxtLevel Brands Podcast, Steve Cleere is joined by Wade Brooks, the CEO of LivBar, to discuss how CPG brands can best compete in a crowded category. They talk about the six characteristics of a viable and investable brand, how companies in the snack bar category were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and how new brands can grow faster by selling on the Amazon marketplace. This week’s episode features interviews with the founders of three innovative brands and focuses on how each landed placement in their dream retailers. Jesse Wolfe, the founder of dressing brand O’Dang Hummus, Lisa Curtis, the founder of Kuli Kuli, a brand of moringa-based foods and beverages and Tyler Noyes, the co-founder of meat snack brand Kalahari Biltong, discussed their respective paths into popular chains, including Publix, Walmart, Sam’s Club and Wegmans, and revealed key steps along the way. Show notes: 1:21: The European Kombucha Tour & Pickles On a Beach -- The episode opens with John Craven fiddling with adaptogenic drops, discussing his recent visit to Europe and recounting the variety of kombucha brands he saw during his travels. The hosts also bantered about a kombucha product created for SodaStream, munched on superfood bars with compostable packaging, pondered as to whether Ray’s beach attire is dissimilar from his everyday outfit, and spoke about a few ready-to-pour cocktail brands. 16:48: Interview: Jesse Wolfe, Founder/CEO, O’Dang Hummus -- In an interview recorded at the 2019 Summer Fancy Food Show, Wolfe spoke about the years-long process of getting O’Dang Hummus, a brand of hummus-based dressings, into Publix, a Florida-based chain of conventional grocery stores. Wolfe went into detail about how the brand, now distributed at 1,200 Publix locations, was conceived, why he believed that Publix was the right fit, his first interaction with the retailer, how an appearance “Shark Tank” kept it out of the chain and how the company ultimately won acceptance on shelf. 33:45: Interview: Lisa Curtis, Founder/CEO, Kuli Kuli -- Curtis, who appeared Taste Radio Ep. 98, sat down with editor Ray Latif at the 2019 Summer Fancy Food Show, for an interview about how Kuli Kuli landed at Walmart. As part of their conversation, Curtis explained why Walmart had been in her sights nearly since the brand’s inception, how years of persistent email communication with a buyer eventually led to a key meeting, and why sales data was a critical part of getting on shelf. She also spoke about how an unplanned car ride with a fellow entrepreneur played an important role in winning placement at Sam’s Club and why the wholesale/club retailer was interested in bringing the brand into its stores. 46:18: Interview: Tyler Noyes, Co-Founder, Kalahari Biltong -- Noyes met with Latif at BevNET HQ in Watertown, Mass. and spoke about the origins of Kalahari Biltong, a brand of thinly-sliced meat snacks, and why he identified Wegmans, a regional grocery chain known for its product selection and shopping experience, as its ideal retailer. He also explained how the company’s strong relationship with its national distribution partner, paved the way to placement at Wegmans, how e-commerce data helped seal the deal, and how Kalahari is supporting the brand at the retailer’s nearly 100 locations. Brands in this episode: Lokai, Health-Ade, SodaStream, Soda Press Co., MiO, GT’s Kombucha, LivBar, Clif Bar, Rick’s Picks, On The Rocks, LIQS, Fireball, Knob Creek, Cruzan Rum, Straightaway Cocktails, OWYN, Soylent, Fly By Jing

Salem is Awesome. Our guest this week is the incredible Wade Brooks. So...who is he? Wade Brooks is CEO of Livbar and has over 25 years of management experience. He was also an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurial Practice at Willamette University's Graduate School of Management for eight years. A 25-minute podcast episode is only scratching the surface of the knowledge he has to offer, but we had a blast talking to him about what it means to be a Salem entrepreneur in 2019 and problems all entrepreneurs should be prepared to solve. We've been doing the New Leader Workshop podcast for about three months now, and I feel like this episode is going to be big for us. Enjoy! Be sure to take a screenshot of this episode and tag both @MrJacobEspi and @Livbar with a caption of your biggest takeaway.

There was a certain point in the early days of LivBar where most people probably would have given up. Despite a product that people really loved and some encouraging momentum, the future of LivBar seemed to be in jeopardy. Their "big break" with a major grocery chain had just fallen through, and the company's co-founders had lost their passion for the business and were looking for the exit But for co-owner and soon-to-be CEO Jayson Selander, quitting was not an option. "I didn't have a choice," he recalls. "There was nothing inside of me that was telling me to stop." This week, Brand Builder sits down with Jayson, a tenacious entrepreneur and a fascinating interview. He's a CEO who loves strategy, but doesn't consider himself a "planner." He's a passionate entrepreneur, but inherited a business with legacy brand and core values. Through it all, his tenacity, his knack for solving the problem in front of him, and his designer's eye have helped elevate the LivBar brand and deliver great tasting bars to thousands of happy consumers. Takeaways Jayson has a background in graphic design, and as an entrepreneur, it’s been a huge asset. We talk about what it means to have a designer’s mindset, and how it can help you lead your company. With Expo West coming up, it’s a great time to ask - are those big trade shows worth the expense? Jayson thinks so, hear why in this interview. Finally, what do you do when that Big Break doesn’t pan out? Jayson went through this. Hear how LivBar recovered and what he learned from the experience.
