At this point, you've probably read 1,001 post-mortem analyses of the India-Pakistan conflict, desperately searching for some new nugget or data point that helps you understand this brief, but intense clash between these two South Asian rivals. In this sea of hot takes, one essay stands out both for its analytical clarity and its wisdom. That piece was written by the scholar Joshua T. White and it's simply titled, “Lessons for the next India-Pakistan war.”It was published by the Brookings Institution, where Josh is a non-resident fellow with the Foreign Policy program. Josh is also professor of the practice of international affairs at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C.Josh has served at the White House as senior advisor and director for South Asian affairs at the National Security Council. And he's also worked at the Pentagon, where he helped get the U.S.-India Defense Technology and Trade Initiative off the ground. To talk more about his piece and the recent conflict, Josh rejoins Milan on the podcast this week. He and Milan discuss how the global debate on “attribution” has tilted decisively in India's favor, troubling new precedents about military target selection, the depth of Pakistani information operations, and the widespread use of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles in the recent conflict. Plus, the two preview Josh's forthcoming book, Vigilante Islamists: Religious Parties and Anti-State Violence in Pakistan.Episode notes: 1. Joshua T. Aggression from China is driving Manila and Washington closer, spurring a loose coalition against Beijing. Synopsis: Every third and fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' global contributor Nirmal Ghosh shines a light on Asian perspectives of global and Asian issues with expert guests. Despite talks between China and the Philippines regarding resupply of the small contingent of Philippine marines aboard the World War II era ship Sierra Madre which Manila had grounded on the disputed Second Thomas Shoal in 1999, tensions remain high in the South China Sea.  In the latest incident, Chinese and Philippine Coast Guard vessels collided near Sabina Shoal, a disputed feature in the Spratly Islands, in the early hours of Monday, Aug 19. The vessels were damaged and though there were no casualties, Washington responded by reminding Beijing of the US's 73-year-old Mutual Defense Treaty with Manila.  China claims most of the 1.3 million square miles of the South China Sea, including the Second Thomas Shoal, where Philippine vessels must run the gauntlet of a de facto Chinese blockade to resupply the marines on the Sierra Madre.  The United States however, also needs to maintain a fine balance, being careful not to be too provocative and back China into a corner, says Indo-Pacific security expert Lisa Curtis, former top US official and now Senior Fellow and director of the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security in Washington, DC.  Ms Curtis has served as deputy assistant to the US President under three successive national security advisors. Last week on the show, Milan sat down with the Carnegie Endowment's Ashley J. Tellis to discuss his much talked about Foreign Affairs essay titled, “America's Bad Bet on India.”In that piece, Ashley argues that if U.S. policymakers are expecting India to come to America's aid in the event of a military conflict with China, they would be well advised to keep their expectations in check. Ashley argues that such a military coalition is highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.A month after Ashley's piece was published, the scholar Arzan Tarapore penned a response in Foreign Affairs titled, “America's Best Bet in the Indo-Pacific.”Arzan, a Research Scholar at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University, joins Milan on the show this week to discuss why coalition warfare is the wrong benchmark with which to assess U.S.-India security cooperation.Milan and Arzan discuss the policy differences between Delhi and Washington, the practical ways in which the United States and India can cooperate to constrain China, and the prospects of iCET (the U.S.-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology). Plus, the two discuss the future of the Quad and how Australia fits into the budding U.S.-India partnership. Episode notes:“Reexamining America's Bet on India (with Ashley J. Nine years after the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative, China's flagship global infrastructure investment program is at a critical juncture. While many countries were initially eager to sign up for the initiative, the BRI has recently lost some of its luster in the face of mounting obstacles including delays, corruption, and heavy debt burdens associated with its projects. Over the past year, CNAS researchers have been thinking through how the BRI might develop in the two key regions of Europe and the Indo-Pacific, forecasting different scenarios for its evolution along with their respective consequences. This research recently culminated in the launch of a report entitled “Competitive Connectivity: Crafting Transatlantic Responses to the Belt and Road Initiative,” which outlines how the United States and Europe can work together to compete against the BRI. The authors of the report join Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Jim Townsend to discuss how the BRI stands up nearly a decade after its launch, and how Europe and the U.S. might push against it going forward. I am so excited to have Lisa Curtis, founder of Kuli Kuli, on the show today. She talks all about her brand and what this last year brought up for her. Lisa tells me what kick started her brand -- she joined the peace corp after college and needed an alternative for her vegan lifestyle. She was introduced to Moringa by some of the locals and she realized she wanted to start selling it as a way to support them. What started out as a way to bring connection to a local community turned into a business after she went back to the states and found herself at a job she wasn't connecting to. She started playing around with different snacks and selling them at the farmers market, which, spoiler, lead to one of her biggest partnerships! We chat about what CEO life really looks like in the beginning and how she juggled bringing on multiple other founders. Lisa then tells me her plans for the brand going forward and leaves you with a tip for starting a company. As a vegetarian in Africa, she found herself eating mostly rice and millet, a diet that left her feeling tired and weak for the majority of the day. When she mentioned it to a couple of women in her local village, they literally grabbed leaves off a nearby tree and mixed them with a West African peanut snack called Kuli Kuli. Turns out, that tree was a Moringa tree and those leaves were more nutritious than Kale. As she ate that mixture each morning for the next several weeks, she found her strength start to come back and knew that Moringa had to be shared with the world. At Kuli Kuli, Lisa and her team are building and scaling the world's leading Moringa brand. In addition to being more nutritious than Kale with respect to protein, iron, calcium and fiber, Moringa offers some incredible health benefits including supporting cardiovascular health, gut health and anti-inflammation.
