Blood harmony, dungeon synth, and a fleeting sequence of waves hitting your ear. Casey Hanson (Spoon Benders, Meatbodies) "Spoon Benders Psychic Day Spa; the only pneumatic traveling psychic day spa endorsed by the Clinton Foundation; sound baths begin when the ear detects the end of the previous wave. Sine waves will be rendered sharp. Sharp psychic stabs in the brain keeping recall regular; 100% guaranteed total recall. Amps painted skyward to salute an oncoming deluge. Not having the security blanket, an incognito experience, and sleeping on pool tables. Will Sprott (Shannon & The Clams, Will Sprott) "In August 2022, Shannon Shaw's world was turned inside out. With mere weeks to go until their wedding, the singer's fiancé, Joe Haener, died in a horrific car accident in front of his family's vegetable farm in Oregon. It was a devastating loss that hit Shannon & The Clams with cataclysmic force. Shaw's bandmates, guitarist Cody Blanchard, keyboard player Will Sprott, and drummer Nate Mahan, had also grown close to Haener, a drummer and fixture of the Bay Area music scene. They canceled shows and rallied around Shaw as fans reached out to show their support. Shaw spent her nights with Blanchard and his family or with the Haeners, finding comfort in community. She adopted a fluffy dog named Spanky-Joe. She moved out of the Portland apartment where she and Haener had been living. She fearlessly chronicled the whole experience online. “Losing Joe made me unafraid of so many things,” Shaw says. “I have a lot less fear. It's given me new perspective. Baring my soul is so much less scary than it would've been before.” Amid this overwhelming sense of grief, melodies and lyrics began to flow out of Shaw. Instagram posts about her relationship with Haener became the building blocks of new compositions. Her Clams bandmates were also reeling and writing their own new songs. From the shock and trauma of that tragedy comes Shannon & The Clams' latest album, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place, a powerful exploration of loss, time, love, and resilience that stands as the beloved garage band's most ambitious, emotionally searing recording to date. In preparing to record, The Clams passed demos back and forth for months and, uncharacteristically for them, jammed on unfinished riffs to see what would happen. “Shannon and I usually write separately, and we usually bring pretty crafted, finished songs,” says Blanchard, who developed tennis elbow after their marathon rehearsal sessions. When Shaw struggled to find the right chords to go with her melodies, she obtained an Omnichord — an electronic instrument with a built-in set of chords and rhythms — and unlocked a new creative palette. In 2023, they returned to Nashville to record with longtime collaborator Dan Auerbach at Easy Eye Sound Studios — who oversaw 2018's Onion and 2021's Year Of The Spider — and captured what they'd been creating. The results show the group ascending to new creative highs, while still weaving in the classic garage-rock and girl-group sounds that have long been a hallmark of their work. This time around, they venture to deeper, farther out musical locations than before and bring a new sophistication and intricacy to their arrangements, plus they get an assist from pro wrestling great Mick Foley on handclaps. Meanwhile, Shaw's powerful voice veers between sweetness and snarl — sometimes within the space of a single lyric." Rosali Middleman (Rosali, Long Hots, Monocot, EDSEL AXLE) "North Carolina–based songwriter Rosali makes songs that take their time in revealing their full power. What might appear to be restrained, introspective compositions will stretch slowly outward, snagging your attention with a sideways guitar lead or an exceptionally raw lyric you didn't catch the first time around. Episode 234 : John Calvin Abney

The great peaks and valleys of the creative experience, inhabiting similar world views, and moving into a garage apartment. John Calvin Abney "Shortwave radio is a nearly-defunct technology that now exists only on the edge of memory, a tool of niche hobbyists. It is a fitting metaphor, then, for those continuing down a highway without travelers, a dusty trail without service to make a call. On his new EP, Shortwaving, alternative Americana singer-songwriter and in-demand sideman (you might have seen him on stage with artists like John Moreland, Ben Kweller, Wild Child, Hanson, and countless others), John Calvin Abney explores the unease - the fear, even - that comes from repeatedly sending signals into the atmosphere and hearing little but static and silence in response. As Abney puts it in the title track: “Swim the shortwave / Cutting in and out / I'm losing strength in these hills / Between the stations / Is the dark you heard about / Can you hear it now? / Shortwaving still.” The central question of this project is this - what do you do when communication seems to be losing its ability to reach people? For Abney, the answer is to beam your message into the void regardless, almost as an act of faith. The result is a haunting set of country-rock laments, descended from classic end-of-the-party albums like Neil Young's On The Beach and Jason Molina's The Magnolia Electric Co. Chunky minor chords loop on repeat while ghostly slide guitar figures glide in and out of earshot. When Abney sings “There's a devil in the dialtone,” we can hear exactly what he means. Recorded at Columbus, Ohio's Secret Studio in a single day with a small group of friends, including co-producer Lydia Loveless on background vocals and engineering duties, one gets the feeling of accidentally stumbling upon the lost tapes of an obscure Midwestern band, amplifying incantations away in a hidden corner somewhere. These are songs about not being heard that sound almost private, as if they're perhaps not meant to be heard. This intimate quality gives Shortwaving a refreshing lack of self-consciousness. Abney gives the impression of singing these songs primarily to himself, almost as a kind of prayer. While coming to terms with the reality of communicating and creating in an age of noise and glamor, he is attempting to “whisper in a hurricane”. The theme of soldiering on through the cacophony permeates the 5-song set - whether in “Arkansas River Bridge”, where Abney challenges both heaven and the devil to “See me get back up and try,” or in the chorus of “Truckee River Blues”, where Abney sings to both the moon and himself, “Shine on, sickle blade moon / It's too late to go too soon.” Shortwaving's glimmers of hope, the “silver lining on a shadow”, as Abney puts it in the title track, come in a few buoyant musical moments later on in the EP - the chiming sparks of a faraway guitar on the instrumental track “Supporting Actor”, which sounds like it could be lifted straight from the session tapes of Led Zeppelin III, and the triumphant, crashing chords that announce the chorus of final track “Truckee River Blues”. After a dark night of the soul spent swimming in the airwaves, it feels as if John Calvin Abney finally receives his response amidst the droning static and spectral frequencies. It is a reminder of the joy and humanity contained in the very act of moving forward and sending out transmissions on these lost highways. And even though it may be harder to hear than it once was - on certain wavelengths at least, Shortwaving is a lighthouse, helping to navigate memories of what used to be." Becoming a certified baler, the evocative interplay between chords, and saccades. M. Ross Perkins M ROSS PERKINS- “What's the Matter, M Ross?” [RELEASE DATE: 5/2/2025] - https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/m-ross-perkins-whats "In describing M Ross Perkins, it's not wrong to namecheck Rhodes and Nilsson, but you have to expand that list of influences to include pop-rock visionaries like Brian Wilson, Colin Blunstone, and even John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Let's also throw in the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Kinks as well. Perkins clearly learned plenty of helpful tips from these and other legends that made the late 1960s and early 1970s such a magical musical time, but he has charted his own singular path from the past and back again. Perkins' hooks, arrangements, and overall sense of songcraft are as sophisticated as the work of Wilson and Nilsson, which is remarkable when you consider Perkins not only produced all of the musical arrangements for his sophomore album E Pluribus M Ross, but also played all of the instruments and sang all of the vocal parts on the album. Even more impressive, Perkins is able to evoke all of these iconic figures in his songs without resorting to psych-rock cliches or outright thievery. It's an extraordinary balancing act, and what emerges is a shimmering tapestry of skillfully-woven musical threads, each harkening back to the past while simultaneously pointing toward the future." The tone of instrumental music, sponges becoming a little less damp, and non-conscious crafting. Ryan Weinstein (Coffin Prick, Coffin Pricks) DRFT18: Coffin Prick- "Loose Enchantment" (Pre-Order)- https://coffinprick.bandcamp.com/album/loose-enchantment "Today Temporal Drift is pleased to officially add LA artist Coffin Prick to its roster and to announce the new album, Loose Enchantment, which will be released on April 4, 2025 – you can stream the title track from the LP now. Over and through the hot cement of North East L.A., an almost-dry riverbed winds like a snake through the city. Coyotes lap at its trickling stream by moonlight, as pedestrians rush past it by day without a second glance, their thoughts tangled up in the distractions of life in a sprawling metropolis. Here, amongst the many avenues and gentle hills, we find Coffin Prick (alias: Ryan Weinstein). Loose Enchantment, this latest Coffin Prick record, is music conceived of in a different frame of mind for humans living in a world nearly-disenchanted with itself. The album consists of eleven new pieces of music recorded by Coffin Prick himself at his home in Los Angeles, a great city of quicksand-like commitments and those who love them enough to uphold the ends of their collective bargains. A record as much about the confusion of modern life as it is endeavored to expose the lusts in the very loins of creation. Sounds enchanting enough for you? Let's look a little more closely… Coffin Prick primarily records on his own, though occasionally receives great collaborative assistance from a sometimes-silent and shadowy partner, Pancho. When the time is right, he leans on a host of harmonically sympathetic luminaries that exist in and out of his immediate musical community. These musical endeavors implement elements of the technologically advanced and the undeniably broken. Equally informed by the not-so-distant past as imaginary future scenarios, his ongoing recorded life continues to mine this deep well. Not so much a “solo” performer as an idea, Coffin Prick is a malleable form whose potential is concurrently cemented and unknown. On the heels of 2023's Laughing (Sophomore Lounge), Coffin Prick got busy. And fast. Playing shows into the year with a newly minted live band, while simultaneously working day and night in his home studio laying the ground for what would become Loose Enchantment. Whereas he was essentially a recording know-nothing at the inception of his last LP, he'd learned a thing or two about better capturing his ideas by this point, taking the sidesteps and victories born of the experience Laughing provided and turning the bright lights on them. As many of Los Angeles's drivers choose to do, it was time to take some surface roads. Odes to self-delusion, the mysteries of creation, cleanliness, and the secrets in other people's lives. A little Loose Enchantment for everyone, basically." With a bond that began in preschool, Laila Hashemi (keys/vocals) and Lexi Funston (guitar/vocals) were always inseparable, so when they met Staz Lindes (bass/vocals) in ninth grade, it felt like they had known her all along. After all, they were a “package deal.” In high school, they began making music together in a friend's laundry room and their relationship just blossomed from there. When it came time to add in a drummer, David Ruiz, who joined the band in 2015, fit in like he had been there all along. It's that special bond that has solidified their relationship as bandmates who connect seamlessly to one another's energy on stage—and best friends. The relationship metaphor, a bridge period, and the point of entry. Justin Sullivan (Nightshop, Flatworms, The Babies) Night Shop "The Beloved Returns" LP- https://www.salinasrecords.com/products "Night Shop is the songwriting project of Justin Sullivan. Sullivan has worked as a touring drummer for the past twenty years with a half dozen DIY punk bands, including Ringers and an early incarnation of Worriers. In 2009, he joined The Babies alongside Kevin Morby and Cassie Ramone. When the band went on hiatus in 2013, Sullivan moved to Los Angeles with Morby and continued working with him as a staple of the live band and playing on all of Morby's studio albums. In the meantime, Sullivan also formed the fuzz punk outfit Flat Worms, with Tim Hellman of Oh Sees and Will Ivy. But in the middle of a tour in August of 2016, Sullivan realized the rigors of the road had grown to be too much. He made the decision to take a full calendar year away from touring and focus, for the first time, on writing his own music. Like most of Sullivan's projects, the album is a family affair. His former touring and recording partner in the Kevin Morby band, Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) plays bass on several of the songs and sings backup vocals on a few as well. Flat Worms cohort Will Ivy plays lead guitar on some, while Mare labelmate and soon-to-be touring partner Anna St. Louis sings backup on two songs. The album was engineered by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods and mixed by Drew Fischer who previously worked with Sullivan on Morby's first two records and The Babies second album Our House On The Hill. “For the past twenty years, Justin has been guided by music, moving through the world one song at at time. No matter the project, he has always been seen less as a drummer and more as the yin to the songwriters yang, with his defined ability to help craft a song into exactly what it should be. He is a secret weapon – the thread that runs through many people's favorite records. And so it is here that he steps out from behind his kit for the first time and to stage center as Night Shop. When I think about this record, a lyric from “A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,” comes to mind. It's the line where Dylan sings, “I'll know my song, well before I starting singing.” In The Break is the product of someone who has had a lot to say and has waited for the perfect moment to say it.” -Kevin Morby" Excerpt from https://woodsist.com/product/night-shop-in-the-break-lp/ Nightshop: Bandcamp: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com Instagram: @nightshopband Website: https://www.nightshopband.com Records: https://www.salinasrecords.com/products Merch: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com/merch Flatworms: Bandcamp: https://flatwormsmusic.bandcamp.com Instagram: @flatwormsband Records: https://www.dragcity.com/artists/flat-worms Merch: https://www.merchbar.com/rock-alternative/flat-worms The Babies: Instagram: @thebabiesforever Records: https://kevinmorby.merchtable.com/the-babies/? A bursting moment of electricity, the well intentioned first version of World music, and working in the Roosevelt Hotel Lobby 4-5 nights a week for 3 hours a night. Jacob Faulkner (LA LOM, The Americans) Los Angeles League of Musicians Album (Videos)- https://www.youtube.com/playlist "LA LOM In the vibrant tapestry of Los Angeles's music scene, LA LOM stands out for its ability to seamlessly weave together the diverse genres and cultures of the city into its music. Short for The Los Angeles League of Musicians, LA LOM is composed of LA natives Zac Sokolow (Guitar), Jake Faulkner (Bass), and Nicholas Baker (Drums/Percussion). The roots of LA LOM reach back to 2019, when the band was assembled to play five nights a week in the lobby of the historic Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. Initially tasked with providing background music for hotel patrons, tourists, and passersby off the street, LA LOM soon began experimenting with a genre-transcending repertoire that reflects the diverse musical diaspora of Angelenos. LA LOM started out reimagining instrumental renditions of the soulful ballads from the 1950s and '60s that they grew up listening to on LA's oldies station, K-EARTH 101, evoking the laid-back aesthetic that defines the region, and drawing inspiration from luminaries like Smokey Robinson, Aaron Neville, and Brenda and the Tabulations. Their sonic palette expanded to encompass the romantic allure of classic Mexican Boleros and the Cumbia Sonidera woven into the very fabric of the city's soundscape, resonating through the streets from car stereos, backyard parties, and lively dance halls. LA LOM carved out a sound that blends all of these elements with the guitar-driven twang of Peruvian Chicha and Bakersfield Country. Zac Sokolow's musical lineage spans generations. He began his creative journey performing alongside his father, a respected figure in LA's bluegrass community, whose family relocated from Buenos Aires to LA in the 1930s. Jake Faulkner comes from a family of Venice artists and met Zac at age 16. Zac and Jake honed their craft through years of collaboration in various bands within Southern California's vibrant Rockabilly scene before eventually joining to form LA LOM. Nicholas Baker was steeped in Latin music from childhood by his grandmother, who hailed from a musical family in Durango, Mexico, and gained fame as a DJ on a Spanish-language radio station in Tucson, Arizona. He studied Latin percussion with renowned Nuyorican bassist and percussionist Roberto Miranda. LA LOM have quickly ascended to playing to thousands of people and have captured the attention of Beck, Vampire Weekend and Zane Lowe." And he said, ‘It's OK, we're still getting set up at the house.' And I was like, ‘What house?' "We're recording at this house, it's really cool.' It was news to me! Blasting Tchaikovsky at 5:00 in the morning, Billy Joel‘s next level move, and deep cuts from grocery store's playlists. Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls, The Babies, Cassie Ramone) Cassie Ramone- “Sweetheart LP”: https://www.cassieramone.com/store "Perhaps Ramone's most unexpected move so far is breaking a five-year silence with a surprise video essay album, Sweetheart, uploaded to YouTube days after it was completed. Composed of 11 DIY phone vignettes filmed verité style by Ramone, the footage is raw and diaristic and is soundtracked by the album in its entirety. Despite her lengthy discography with band projects, Sweetheart is only Ramone's second solo album; but it's possibly her best record to date, the culmination of almost two decades of songwriting and honing her sound. Heartbreaking and raw, and featuring her sharpest writing yet, Sweetheart was crafted with collaborator Dylan White from song fragments Ramone sang into a voice recorder over bonfires at night. The finished songs range from distorted, visceral head cleaners like “They Hide Their Eyes” to melancholy starlit waltzes touched by tragedy (“Joy To The World”) to some of the catchiest songs Ramone's ever written—take “Together” or the Mac Demarco-featuring “The Only Way I Know How” as examples. Recorded at White's Valley Structures studio on frequent trips south to Richmond, Virginia—Ramone lives in Brooklyn—Sweetheart peels back the curtain, just a little, on the swirling, creative energy at the heart of Cassie Ramone's music. What's revealed is a frankness and emotional truth that's always been there, informed by classic American songwriting and years of freewheeling living. That Ramone has released it on her own label—created with White in true DIY fashion—should come as no surprise." Rod Serling singing Christmas carols, garden variety anxiety, and the dog show opener for a Beastie Boys concert. Steve Okonski (Okonski, Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Frazer) OKONSKI Entrance Music [RELEASE DATE: 2/28/2025]- https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski "After nearly two years, Okonski returns with Entrance Music — an album that finds the trio at the height of their improvisational prowess and celebrating the spontaneous and meditative. On the heels of 2023's debut Magnolia, pianist and leader Steve Okonski has reconvened long-time musical collaborators (Durand Jones and the Indications bandmate Aaron Frazer on drums and bassist Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery) for another session in the spirit of artists like the Bad Plus, Gerald Clayton, and The Breathing Effect. Ultimately Entrance Music serves as an invitation to early hours, where songs linger in the doorway, announcing their presence before returning to the air, in a meticulous drift into the next. Recorded over a five day session, Entrance Music was one of the first albums committed to tape at Portage Lounge, Terry Cole's studio in Loveland, OH. “It was a new setup, but with Terry behind the dials it was very familiar,” says Okonski. “I can't emphasize enough how much Terry feels like a fourth member [of the band] because of the space he's curating, the energy he is bringing, and the production ideas.” The energy and sound created with the Colemine label head at the helm makes for a listening experience equally at home with ECM or Stones Throw catalogs. From the rippling notes of the pastoral opener, “October,” Entrance Music is lush with anticipation, both band and listener feeling the tension in the tranquility — where the interplay of jazz improvisation and boom bap beats never shortchanges the musicianship but the talent is ever in service of the song. While the band does not play together as often as they would like, not much time is needed for the three to lock in. Montgomery's bass opening to “Passing Through” bends and moves with a singular meditative grace before piano and percussion joins the daylight filling a room with breath and light. If Magnolia resonated with last calls and late nights, Entrance Music counters with early mornings and first cups of coffee. Whereas much of the debut resonates with his time in New York, Entrance Music “feels a little less ‘on the streets at 2 A.M.' and a little more nature-based…a little more ethereal,” says Okonski. “It's definitely age, environment, and family — all of that does come through in the music.”" Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski Okonski: Bandcamp: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @steve.okonski Website: https://linktr.ee/okonski Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections Merch: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/merch Durand Jones & The Indications: Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.bandcamp Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/durand Merch: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Aaron Frazer Bandcamp: https://aaronfrazermusic.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @aaron_frazer Website: https://aaronfrazermusic.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/aaron Merch: https://shop.aaronfrazermusic.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

Michael Rault (Michael Rault, Pearl Charles) "The Edmonton-born, Montreal-based singer-songwriter-producer began working on its songs in earnest after winding down the tour supporting his 2015 full-length Living Daylight, but getting to the point of having an album was a process. "Musically it came out of a period of dissatisfaction, creatively and personally, as I found myself pushing against the limitations of my abilities and approaches to making music." But those delays eventually paid off. As he was working on Tonight's songwriting, Rault kept entering the orbit of Wayne Gordon, the producer / head engineer at Brooklyn's legendary Daptone studio—first through opening stints for the late firebrand Charles Bradley, then while on tour with Aussie shredders King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Sending Gordon early sketches of some songs led to Rault heading to Daptone for what was initially going to be a two-week recording stint. Midway through that Gordon approached him about signing to the Daptone Records label's fledgling rock spinoff, Wick—and becoming the first Canadian member of the Daptone family. Signing with Wick also led to Rault finishing the record at Daptone and bringing Gordon on as co-producer." It's a melodic, hook filled rock epic in which frontman and lead guitarist Chad Ubovich faces the trials of sobriety, redemption, reinvention while literally, learning to walk and play again. Resurrection not only accompanies the record, but its production as well, Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom examines themes surrounding love and loss, escapism, defeatism, hedonism, psychedelics and much more. “The last record was more of a cartoon version of who we were– simple and fun without delving into heavy concepts,” recalls Ubovich. "The whole thing before with Meatbodies was never sit down, next part, next part, but I wanted to make something with more depth. After everything that had happened, and my personal life, I was left with this feeling of emptiness and loss. So I wanted to make music that was absent from things– songs that were more about conveying feeling.” March 8th of next year, Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom finally sees its release via In The Red. Its lead single and video “Hole,” out now, is pure alternative rock sweetness and clearly a nod to an amalgamation of shoegaze juggernauts from yesteryear. Backed by a brand-new video by Matt Yoka, “Hole” is immediate, dosed with enough pop and psilocybin to appease fans of both heavy rock and a quality melody. “That was one of the first songs I wrote, and I think it's really indicative of that time,” says Ubovich. “How I was thinking and feeling and what I wanted to accomplish with this LP before I even knew it.”" Excerpt from https://intheredrecords.com/collections/meatbodies Meatbodies: Bandcamp: https://meatbodies-band.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @meatbodiesofficialauthentic Website: https://linktr.ee/meatbodies Records: https://intheredrecords.com/collections/meatbodies/products Merch: https://www.merchbar.com/rock-alternative/meatbodies Danketsu 10: Bandcamp: https://patrickshiroishi.bandcamp.com/album/from-a-distance-everything-shines The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

Danny Bengston (Together Pangea) "Since they began jamming back in William's Santa Clarita bedroom, Los Angeles indie band Together Pangea have continually challenged themselves with each subsequent offering. Jelly Jam [2010] poured the gasoline, Living Dummy [2011] struck the match, and Badillac [2014] lit the fire with its revved-up nineties rock-inspired flames. Along the way, fan favorites like “Sick Shit,” “Badillac,” and “Offer” would rack up millions of Spotify streams, while the group received support from Consequence of Sound, Pitchfork, MTV, Stereogum, and more. Following the 2015 release of The Phage EP, produced by The Replacements' Tommy Stinson, these working class boys embarked on the journey to what would become 2017's Bulls and Roosters, which evidenced their growth as a tried-and-true rock band with just the right amount of “brattiness,” as they like to say. Together Pangea—William Keegan, Danny Bengston, and Erik Jimenez—return in 2021 having made the most of 2020's turbulence by writing and recording DYE, an upbeat, undeniable collection of hooks, anthems, and power-pop garage-rock catchiness that is unmistakably the album of their career.DYE is an amalgam of the band's last three records: the inward looking and self-pleasing experimentation of 2017's Bulls and Roosters, the frantic and scream-y Badillac with its inspiration from emotionally raw grunge, and the 50's pop heavy 2011 album Living Dummy. After more than a decade as Together Pangea, the band know how their bread is buttered and made an effort to focus on what they know they do best." Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics, Kelly Finnigan) Kelly Finnigan “A Lover Was Born” Vinyl- https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/kelly-finnigan-a-lover-was-born "Distance as a measure of time and place informs Kelly Finnigan's, A Lover Was Born with a grit and grace that turns passion into virtue. The latest solo release from The Monophonics frontman roots itself in the best traditions of midwest soul labels like King, Curtom, Dakar, and the Bodie Recording Company. A Lover Was Born is a testimony that these deep cut grooves are not resigned to nostalgia, instead, they are at the burning heart of longing and hope. The journey Finnigan takes listeners on over Lover's eleven tracks echo the state of motion and growth since his solo debut, The Tales People Tell (2019). These two records bookend a prolific period of output, including a pair of Monophonics albums, a Christmas album, a mixtape, and a full slate of producing and engineering (The Ironsides, Alanna Royale, the Sextones). “There's nothing like making records,” says Finnigan. “It feels like that's my purpose — the reason I was put on this earth.” Written in California, Ohio, and Staten Island, Kelly Finnigan collaborated with old friends in and outside the studio. “I enjoy working alone but it's not how you want to make a record…almost everybody I brought in for this album I've worked with, toured with or spent a great deal of time with.” Max and Joe Ramey (The Ironsides), Jimmy James (Parlor Greens), Sergio Rios (Orgone), Joey Crispiano (Dap Kings) and Jay Mumford (aka J-Zone) all contribute to the overall sound of A Lover Was Born. Dramatic influences like Isaac Hayes (check out the piano on “Be Your Own Shelter”) and Jerry Ragovoy are chopped and folded into Northern Soul uptempo numbers to create stompers like “Get a Hold of Yourself” or “Chosen Few”. Finnigan's take on Deep Soul is captured brilliantly on “Walk Away from Me” and “Love (Your Pain Goes Deep)”, while Boom Bap pervades on hard hitters “His Love Ain't Real” & “Cold World”. Slower songs such as “Let Me Count the Reasons”, the emotional “All That's Left”, and the soul-stirring album closer “Count Me Out” show the honest and tender side that has become Finnigan's calling card. All the while, the voice is raw and earthy — in the best tradition of R&B shouters like Otis Redding, Lee Moses, and David Ruffin. The songs on A Lover Was Born reconfigure the spliced and sampled DNA of hip hop (extracted by crate diggers like Dilla and RZA) to create something new, underscoring both the spectrum and depth of soul while making a case to the timelessness of Finnigan's sound." In the making of their new album Data Doom, the Los Angeles-based four-piece forged a sublimely galvanizing sound informed by their love of Afrobeat and proto-punk—a potent vessel for their frenetic meditations on technological change run rampant, encroaching fascism, and corrosive systems of power. Animated by the explosive energy they've brought to the stage in sharing bills with such eclectic acts as Ty Segall and ZZ Top, the result is a major leap forward for one of the most adventurous and forward-thinking bands working today. Rooted in the cerebral yet viscerally commanding songwriting of co-founders Dylan Sizemore (vocals, guitar) and Josh Menashe (lead guitar, synth), Data Doom marks the first Frankie and the Witch Fingers album created with bassist Nikki “Pickle” Smith (formerly of Death Valley Girls) and drummer Nick Aguilar (previously a touring drummer for punk legend Mike Watt). In crafting their most rhythmically complex work to date, the band drew heavily from each new member's distinct sensibilities: Smith tapped into her extensive background in West African drumming (an art form she first discovered thanks to her music-instructor parents), while Aguilar leaned into formative influences like longtime Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. Self-produced by the DIY-minded band and recorded direct to tape by Menashe, Data Doom ultimately took shape through countless sessions in their Southeast L.A. rehearsal space, with Frankie and the Witch Fingers allowing themselves unlimited time to explore their most magnificently strange impulses." The idea was to recapture the early, stress-free days of playing music before they were both in groups that had gained some success and created accompanying pressures. Justin Sullivan, who had played with Ramone in Bossy, began practicing with them on drums, and The Babies debuted as a three-piece in March 2009 at Dead Herring, their friends' loft in Brooklyn. They played a few times before asking Nathanial Stark, formerly of Bent Outta Shape, to join on bass, and the full lineup's first shows were in that summer. Originally formed in Toronto back in 2015 as a part-time project between Cam Hilborn (vox, songwriter, guitar) and drummer extraordinaire Aurora Evans, Wine Lips quickly escalated into a full-blown, full-time, full-on international phenomenon. Their debut album took them across North America followed immediately by an intensive and unexpected tour of Hong Kong and China in 2018. They released their massive “Stressor” album the very next year (2019) to rave reviews and massive critical acclaim. Multiple tracks from Stressor charted across North American and European radio, while several songs ended up being featured in broadcast and Netflix series. Endless touring ensued. Then 2020 happened. The band used their mandatory downtime to fully dedicate themselves to crafting their groundbreaking third full-length “Mushroom Death Sex Bummer Party” (recorded by Simon Larochette at The Sugar Shack). The record was released in October 2021 and then shit really hit the fan. The international music press lost their collective minds, penning over 250 glowing features and super positive reviews spanning 35+ countries. At the time of writing, the album blew past 20 Million spins on Spotify alone. The vinyl release of MDSBP is currently in its 7th pressing with 9 different colour variants. The lead track “Eyes” has been licensed to a metric ton of films, series and video games including ABC's The Rookie, Hockey Night In Canada and Population 11. Even more endless touring ensued, except this time the venues were huge and mostly sold-out. Which brings us to the new record… “Super Mega Ultra” is an absolute beast. Recorded by Simon Larochette at The Sugar Shack in Ontario, the album is jam-packed with 12 ramped-up supersonic ear-scorching auditory delicacies. SMU is probably Wine Lips' most ambitious undertaking to date, exploring new thematic territory while firmly maintaining their signature psych garage punk rock panache. Working in graphic design for the internal communications department of Guitar Center, letting it ride, and building around the seed. Nikki Pickle (Frankie & The Witch Fingers, Death Valley Girls) "Frankie and the Witch Fingers have marked their triumphant return with “Bonehead,” their first new offering since last year's landmark LP Data Doom. The thundering, fuzzy rocker begins with a formidable opening groove that quickly drops into a distorted, double-time cacophony of harmonizing guitars and blistering drums…. Over the past decade Frankie and the Witch Fingers have operated as an outright force of nature, offering up a revelatory form of psych-rock that hits on both a primal and ecstatically mind-bending level. In the making of their new album Data Doom, the Los Angeles-based four-piece forged a sublimely galvanizing sound informed by their love of Afrobeat and proto-punk—a potent vessel for their frenetic meditations on technological change run rampant, encroaching fascism, and corrosive systems of power. Animated by the explosive energy they've brought to the stage in sharing bills with such eclectic acts as Ty Segall and ZZ Top, the result is a major leap forward for one of the most adventurous and forward-thinking bands working today." A physical manifestation of inertia, Blair has been a musical object in motion since his father taught him to play the drums at 13 years old. In the years since, he's spent his time playing in numerous bands, producing bands albums, releasing four self-produced solo albums, and founding the LA-based record label Lolipop Records, through which he helped break a new wave of young garage rockers out of their neighborhoods and into the world. His previous releases garnered praise from Pitchfork, The FADER, Spin, Uproxx & more, and led to support slots alongside acts like The Growlers, Broncho, Screaming Females, Peach Kelli Pop, Cosmonauts and more. Now, after a tumultuous year and relocating from Los Angeles to Flagstaff & back again, Blair is taking some time to help himself the only way he knows how: Channeling his struggles into massive arena rock/power-pop songs on his new EP For The First Time." Amphitheater shows, DeKalb Illinois, and the influence from the greatest hits of Doo-wop CD. Jimmy Whispers "“We're not so different anymore,” Jimmy Whispers proclaims on the title track of his long-awaited sophomore album, The Search for God. A lot has changed for everyone in the past few years, and especially for Jimmy. In another lifetime, he was that sweet kid from Chicago who stole our hearts with his aw-shucks Midwestern attitude and his knack for writing catchy old-time melodies, who legendary critic Jessica Hopper once called the city's “greatest new homegrown musical enigma,” who turned a mixtape of iPhone voice memos (Summer in Pain) into a profound racket and covered the city in cryptic anti-police street art and zines. If you caught a glimpse, it was exciting, but it was just a warm-up to his second act. As for today, Jimmy Whispers is alive and well in Los Angeles. He's still making music—quite a lot of it. He's got a blossoming new career as a music video director and filmmaker. He's become a co-writer for others including Drugdealer and Dent May. He's got a side hustle as a valet parking attendant, a 1988 Buick Reatta, and a new commitment to making life-affirming art. Jimmy has always been a dreamer, but it's a different man who's wearing the mantle these days. The old Jimmy was raw, whether pouring his heart into a demo or flinging himself off stage in a cathartic act of theatrical self-destruction.The new one has started to find his center and a sound that sparkles and shines, although the wild spirit that's always animated his work still hasn't been tamed. After embracing sobriety in 2019, and now as a filmmaker sharing the stories of lesser known Los Angeles community members, he's brought his dreaming down to earth, while turning its direction even further out." Since forming nearly a decade ago, they've self-produced dizzying, otherworldly music that's connected with fellow travelers in the hallucinogenic world of outré rock music. Led by singer and guitarist Julian Porte along with founding members Gabriel Fernandez (lead guitar) and Johnathan Martin (percussion), the band has enchanted live audiences at Desert Daze and on tour with like-minded groups Post Animal and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. The band's vivid sound has found them placed on popular playlists like Modern Psychedelia and the legendary superproducer's Danger Mouse Jukebox. Their 2015 debut, “Friends,” has surpassed 18 million streams. Joined by new member Kevin Perez (bass) in 2021, Levitation Room have continued to expand their colorful, unearthly sound, a process that has culminated with the vibrant new album Strange Weather. Collaborating with former Brian Jonestown Massacre keyboardist Rob Campanella, Jason Kick (Mild High Club), and Black Crowes' Joel Robinow, Levitation Room take a new step in their story and vision with Strange Weather. The record's lyrical narratives—about love in the park, life in the city, and the fact that “The world today is such an illusion”—are appropriately steeped in '60s sonics and a dreamy, lo-fi atmosphere. It's spacey, celestial guitar music for escaping into, and “it feels just like heaven.” 'Strange Weather' will be released February 16, 2024" Excerpt from https://greenwayrecords.com/artist/levitation-room/ Levitation Room: Bandcamp: https://levitationroom.bandcamp.com/album/headspace Instagram: @levitation_room Website: https://levitation-room.com Records: https://greenwayrecords.com/artist/levitation-room/ Merch: https://churchofpickle.com/collections/levitation-room The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

It's me through and through,” says multi-instrumentalist Aaron Frazer. Following his acclaimed 2021 debut, Into the Blue is expansive- a daring blend of soul, psychedelia, spaghetti western, disco, gospel and hip-hop, representing the impressive range of Frazer's sonic talents. Frazer maintains the unmistakable falsetto and classic songwriting he's known for, but plants Into the Blue firmly in the now with a hip-hop mentality at its core, weaving together genres and production techniques to form something new. The opener, “Thinking of You,” is harmony-laden soul drawing inspiration from legendary Harlem trio Black Ivory over a bed of strings. “Lonely nights like this, still I feel your kiss,” Frazer coos nostalgically in his high register. Later, on “Time Will Tell,” he plaintively considers the end of a relationship, “trying to figure out // how love went from sweet to sour.” Into The Blue was conceived, like so many classic records, out of heartbreak. Following the end of a long relationship, Frazer moved cross-country from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and embarked on a journey that's reflected in the album's themes of grief, loneliness, and searching for healing. “Into The Blue really means heading into the unknown. That has been the last year of my life and I'm still in the blue,” Frazer explains. “But there are also songs here that celebrate love and the giddiness of a new relationship and all that. That's part of a breakup to me, processing the whole thing, remembering the things that were right as much as the things that were wrong.” The title track, “Into The Blue”, is a haunting, resolute anthem, combining cinematic strings and tough-as-nails breakbeats as Frazer heads west. “Here I go, to a place where the broken heart knows,” he sings. “It's all I can do. Back into the blue.” Frazer wrote on every track and played several live instruments on the album. “Payback” is an explosive dancefloor heater, featuring shimmering tambourines and driving" Excerpt from https://aaronfrazermusic.com Aaron Frazer: Bandcamp: https://aaronfrazermusic.bandcamp.com/album/introducing Instagram: @aaron_frazer Website: https://aaronfrazermusic.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/aaron-frazer Merch: https://shop.aaronfrazermusic.com Durand Jones & The Indications Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.bandcamp.com/merch Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://durandjonesandtheindications.com Records: https://www.secretlystore.com/private-space-durand-jones-and-the-indications Merch: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

The album is a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies threading together sock hop rock n' roll, scrappy dream pop, and ethereal torch songs into a sultry, spacey, and sublime journey towards brighter horizons. The entire album gives off an aura of intimacy while also creating a broader, pastel colored world—a duality achieved through Montoya's unique and meticulous recording process at the couple's home studio the Centre Of Mental Arts (COMA), and the magisterial mastering job by longtime friend and collaborator Mick Boggis (Pogues, Mötorhead, 12 Monkeys, Joe Strummer, etc.) who has served as a mentor throughout Montoya's recording career.” Excerpt from https://www.softpalmsmusic.com/about/ Scott's Metadata Links: Music streaming services don't pay much, which is a problem, but there's a good chance you're not collecting the (insulting amount of) money that they ARE paying you. Each collect different types of royalties and are not in conflict with each other. If you live outside the US, check out this list of CISAC Members and ASCAP's list of Affiliated Foreign Societies. Tim Carman (GA-20) on drums, Jimmy James (True Loves, formerly Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio) on guitar, and Adam Scone (Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) on organ. Scone is perhaps the most tasteful living organist on planet Earth (and beyond) and to watch him play is to truly watch a master at work. He bends the organ to his will like a true mastercraftsman. He's a veteran of the soul revival scene, having played on many Daptone recording sessions since their inception, but also has learned from some of the legends of soul jazz: Melvin Sparks and The Turbanator himself Dr. Lonnie Smith. Jimmy James needs no introduction to many as he's been seen all over the world performing with instrumental groups The True Loves and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. Perhaps the most dangerous right hand in all of soul music, his signature funky approach can be identified by even the most novice of music fans, a feat most musicians could only dream of. Tim Carman. The backbone. The pocket. Having cut his teeth touring the world with blues group GA-20, Carman's expertise in the world of blues shuffles might make him an unlikely candidate to lay the foundation for the funky Parlor Greens, but this debut LP shows otherwise. Born in London before moving to Southern California at the age of seven, Misha was raised by an American father (a musician who played guitar in Dire Straits) and British mother (a former model and "pretty creative lady," he tells me over the phone). "Growing up in a musical household, I assumed that you just sort of pick an instrument you wanted to play and then announced that you played it. So as a kid, I claimed forever that I played the bass, but I never properly practiced, or even owned one." When word got around at school, Misha was top playground pick for the upcoming competition. "I went out and bought a bass, practiced a little with a group, and played the battle of the bands." Excerpt from https://i-d.vice.com/en/article/7xv37..." Presenting in a confident manner, listening to podcasts at the gym, and the idea of a Steely Dan play. Ruben Zarate (Dante Elephante) "Santa Barbara-based Ruben Zarate created the musical persona known as Dante Elephante in 2013. Shortly thereafter Lollipop Records released his first two LPs, German Aquatics and Anglo-Saxon Summer, both produced by Jonathan Rado (Foxygen), which saw praise from Consequence of Sound, Funny or Die, and Brooklyn Vegan. In the summer of 2018 Elephante then digitally released a full-length, Rare Attractions, leading to appearances at SXSW, Treefort Festival, as well as tours supporting The Orwells, Summer Salt, and Real Estate. Two records and a headlining tour under his belt, Dante Elephante now offers his most accomplished work to date: Mid-Century Modern Romance, produced by Paul Cherry, features eight soulful, disco-kissed tracks, seemingly right out of 1979." Bert Hoover (Hooveriii, Groop) "Having originally been born as a solo drum machine project by Bert Hoover, Hooveriii (pronounced "Hoover Three") has now evolved into it's true final form - a six member band adept at creating their own brand of psychedelic space rock. And after almost a decade in, the band is set to release their sophomore album and debut for The Reverberation Appreciation Society, Water For The Frogs. Influenced by Iggy's The Idiot, Bowie's Berlin records, and Soft Machine, the LP sees the band creating their own version of prog rock, circa 2021." Joe's very first release, full of tape and reverberated flavours, made waves across the globe, due to its timeless appeal and the co-release partnership between Third Eye Stimuli and Six Tonnes de Chair (France). Sure to please fans of The Babe Rainbow, Mystic Braves, White Fence and 60's era groups like The Seeds and The Notorious Byrd Brothers, Joe Ghatt has a way of effortlessly fusing classic and nostalgic music with his own authentic and potent sound — all recorded the old fashion way — straight to magnetic tape. During his maiden tour of Australia, his band performed at a slew of sold out shows, where he successfully transformed his humble home recordings into a wild performance, full of extended jams and flowing improvisation. Meditative swimming, the bottomless pit of the 60's, and the treat of a record. Jake Garcia (The Black Angels, The Ripe, Christian Bland & The Revelators, Alex Maas, The Ugly Beats) "The best music reflects a wide-screen view of the world back at us, helping distill the universal into something far more personal. Since forming in Austin in 2004, The Black Angels have become standard-bearers for modern psych-rock that does exactly that, which is one of many reasons why the group's new album, Wilderness of Mirrors, feels so aptly named. In the five years since the band's prior album, Death Song, and the two-plus years spent working on Wilderness of Mirrors, pandemics, political tumult and the ongoing devastation of the environment have provided ample fodder for the Black Angels' signature sonic approach." Satisfying interpretations, the truth of a moment captured well enough, and blending to taste. Sergio A. Rios (Orgone) "Now and always, Orgone delivers dirty, organic, California soul with heart; music that grabs you by the collar, pulls you to your feel and shoves you wantingly onto the dance floor. It all started with two kids from the San Fernando Valley, whose shared affinity for gritty soul records of the 60s and 70s collided with the colorful music cultures brewing in Los Angeles during the late 90s. That friendship sparked a movement, and Orgone has been delivering nothing but gold to the funk faithful ever since. Formed in the late 1990s in Los Angeles, Orgone remains dedicated to creating heavy, raw, adrenaline-fueled funk and sweat-dripping soul. With a core rhythm section of close friends and self-taught musicians steeped in the DJ culture of L.A., Orgone has spent the last decade expanding their roster and evolving a sound that simultaneously recognizes its roots in old school respect and pulsates with the force of the new millennium. While becoming a staple on the festival circuit in the early 2000s, Orgone has gained a reputation among fellow artists for being one of the baddest go-to backing bands on the planet."
