In this emotional and inspiring episode of Podsongs, host Jack Stafford brings together acclaimed author Cheryl Strayed (Tiny Beautiful Things, Wild) and beloved indie folk musician May Erlewine for a rare conversation on creativity, courage, and vulnerability.May shares how Cheryl's deeply human writing shaped her latest album, and the two explore the connection between music and literature, emotional healing, activism through art, and navigating life as working artists and mothers.Whether you're a fan of heartfelt storytelling, songwriting, or empowering conversations, this episode offers a profound look into the creative soul.
Singer-songwriter May Erlewine’s new album offers a different side of an artist known for warm, intimate lyrics and bespoke acoustic arrangements. But the qualities that draw fans into May Erlewine’s music are still here, just with a less-compliant exterior. What It Takes is the second album she’s made with friend and producer Theo Katzman, of the post-funk band Vulfpeck. Erlewine has been thinking about the chaos of the moment and the moral choices she feels compelled to make. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Most of the revolutionary leaders of history were counter-cultural. They fixed something most people knew was wrong. Jesus did something very different, and nothing illustrated that more than what was explored at Storyline's Gathering. The band performed songs by Phil Collins, Carly Simon, Ben Rector, and May Erlewine.

Michigan born singer/songwriter May Erlewine has been putting out her own music for almost 20 years. She's also released music with the Sweet Water Warblers. Her music has been covered by many artists, including Sawyer Fredericks, who performed her song, “Shine On,” on NBC's The Voice. Her brand new album, Tiny Beautiful Things, deals a lot with the connections between people - something sorely missing during the worldwide Pandemic. In her own words, she says “this album is an invitation to connect with the many ways that love appears in our lives."We talk with Erlewine about the challenges of recording the album remotely. She also gives us the inspiration behind many of the songs on the new record.
Today, Rick Coates led us into a beautiful time of worship. This was followed by a poem and a prayer read by Jessica Williams, and a TED talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie titled The Danger of a Single Story. After listening to the talk, we reflected on the themes that stood out to us, noting how much we need to seek out a variety of stories (the more the better!) about others, and about ourselves, too. Then we listened to a song by May Erlewine that helped tie it all together. Unfortunately only the first part of the service was recorded, but you can access all of these things through the links provided. Whenever we come to ‘conclusions' about ourselves or one another we run the risk of missing our marvellous multiplicity - the way we can be both gentle and wild, curious and assertive, narrow and wide, afraid and courageous. There's an inclusiveness and dignity that comes quite naturally when we see one another's complexity, and we see it in ourselves, and when we learn to trust our own capacity to turn towards, to be with, to welcome that very complexity as we live alongside one another, love one another, work together on projects and commitments that matter to us. This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about how we might learn to include more of ourselves and others and, in doing so, undo the fear and certainty about one another that keeps us far apart, hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Find us on FaceBook to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google and Spotify. Our source this week is from the singer/songwriter May Erlewine. On this episode of The Into The Mystic Podcast, your host Kurt is joined by Michael Erlewine, a man whose contributions in multiple areas of interest are quite simply unmatched. They touch on numerous topics and succeeded in highlighting some areas wherein Michael could be considered to be a subject matter expert, and as a result, they only "scratched the surface" with respect to the wisdom Michael has to share. But, never fear... a follow-up conversation with this mystical fellow has already been agreed to! Kurt also shares a song from the delightfully talented Anne Erlewine and an exclusive live recording of the Sweet Water Warblers performing, which he captured while attending the Hoxeyville Music Festival. We included an excerpt from our in-depth interview with Annie Capps (from Annie & Rod Capps) in Episode 488 of Folk Roots Radio. You can now check out the full interview here. Annie & Rod Capps eighth, self-produced album "When They Fall" is a wonderful collection of songs that really fit every mood - from the light and cheery, to the serious and dramatic. What all these songs have in common is they are very all very well-written, and beautifully sung and played by a fine group of musicians. Joining Annie Capps (vocals, guitar, banjo) and Rod Capps (guitar, viola and harmony vocals) on the album are regular band members Jason Dennie from Thunderwüde (mandolin, mandola and harmony vocals) and Dan Ozzie Andrews (bass) with Michael Shimmin (Joshua Davis, the olllam, May Erlewine) on drums and percussion. Drew Howard also guests on pedal steel and Jenny Bienemann provides some delicate vocal harmonies on the song "Brevity". When They Fall deservedly became one of Our Favourite Albums of 2019. Annie & Rod have also joined forces with two of their favourite songwriters, Jan Krist & Jim Bizer, and with the addition of Jan's partner Alan Finkbeiner on percussion, they are now Diamonds In the Rust. A full length album from the new combo is expected in 2020. For more information about the music of Annie & Rod Capps, visit https://maynardmusic.com. Photo: Jennifer Prouty. About This Episode Formed at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in 2014, The Sweet Water Warblers have gone on to attract serious admiration wherever they appear. Michigan songbirds, Rachael Davis, Lindsay Lou and May Erlewine had each carved out successful careers on the American Roots Music circuit and in the process grew to respect each others’ work. When they finally gelled into the potent force they have become, it was the most natural coming together – three singing sirens and multi-instrumentalists whose repertoire swings from gospel and bluegrass to soul and even joyful interpretations of pop. With three-part vocal harmonies that are sublime, they trade instruments including mountain fiddle and banjo, uke, guitar and double bass. Lindsay Lou is well known as lead vocalist with her band The Flatbellys who have toured extensively and appeared at festivals ranging from MerleFest in the USA to Shetland Folk Festival in the UK. One of the main visiting attractions at Celtic Connections in 2017, she was nominated in the 2016 Best Vocalist category by the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Association. May Erlewine has the sort of soul-baring voice that moves the Alan Lomaxes of the world to abandon the ivory tower for the back roads of rural America. One of the most prolific and passionate songwriters of her generation, May’s music has touched the hearts of people all over the world. Her songs have been featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, on Prairie Home Companion, sung in churches, played by musicians nationally and regionally and in living rooms across the land. Her words have held solace for weary hearts and her writing is for the times. Rachael Davis has a broad and faithful fanbase, admired especially by her peers, with a reputation as one of the classiest gals on the scene. At the age of 21, Rachael moved to Boston to start a career as a singer-songwriter and 7 short months after joining the music community she was was awarded the Boston Music Award for best new singer-songwriter. Her influences range from the jazz stylings of Ella Fitzgerald to the soulful contemporary vocals of Patty Griffin – and much more in between.
