Celebrating Earth Day once a year is not enough. How about an entire month? Yes, Earth Day is in April, so you could consider April also being Earth Month. But in reality, everyday should be Earth Day. And it is in that spirit, that we are talking with Roadhouse Brewing in regards to sustainable breweries. But what does sustainable really mean? And how do breweries fit into that picture?Meet Jon from Pure Madness Brewery GroupHaving really only a superficial understanding of how a brewery can be considered a sustainable brewery - Meaning they use solar, repurpose their spent grains, recycle waste products, and do their best to treat the planet with kindness and respect - We wanted to delve deeper into what being a sustainable brewery means. That is why we sat down with Jon Courtois, Director of Operations (and my newly assigned title for him - Sustainability Guru) at Pure Madness Brewery Group. Pure Madness oversees two craft breweries: Roadhouse Brewing Company in Jackson Hole and Melvin Brewing in Alpine, Wyoming.Jon works in the brewing industry, but he is also in love with the outdoors. Meaning he, along with all of us, has a reason to care about how our beloved beer impacts our beloved planet. An avid snowboarder, living in the Jackson Hole surrounding area, Jon understands first hand why the two breweries under Pure Madness group are working so hard at being sustainable.B Corp Brewery: Above and Beyond SustainabilityBut that's not where they stop. Roadhouse is actually one of a very few B Corp Certified Breweries in the U.S. What that means to you and me as consumers is that we're getting some of the best tasting beer that also happens to be some of the best for the environment.Officially, B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Jon about what it means for the team at Roadhouse (with Melvin soon to be following suit), the consumers, and the community to be a B Corp Certified Brewery. Because it's more than just a title. In Jackson Hole, it's a way of life.Roadhouse Brewing and Jackson HoleNot only do we talk about what it means to be a sustainable brewery and B Corp Certified, but we also chat about what it means to be a brewery located in Jackson Hole. With brand ambassadors, partners such as Teton County Search and Rescue, and an entire community that rallies around Mother Nature and damn good beer, Roadhouse embraces sustainable living. And then there's the beer. Of course, we talk beer! Tune in to learn all about their Kush series beer, with the first one being released in partnership with B Corp Certified partners. Those partners are: Creature Comforts Brewing Co in GA , Mainstem Malt, and Roy Farms - all B Corp Certified partners. For the complete set of show notes, including connections, links, and images, click here. And don't forget to sign up for Camp Carpe Diem - It's going to be epic! What's the funniest brewery name you've ever seen? Zack from Indiana jumps on with Flex and Greg to talk about “inbetweener” beers, setting the right expectations for customers, the best beer prank, more sellout breweries, and Canadian beer with a racy name.Zack is drinking Wiseacre Brewing's Bow Echo hazy IPA. Flex is sipping on ‘Scuse Me, a pale ale from Ope! Brewing. Greg is reviewing Brewery X's Signature Series Volume III. Wakeboarding is tough when you're old; just ask Greg. At least he found a new lake beer – Firestone Walker Mind Haze Light. The crew talks about an essential beer – the intbetweener. What's yours? Turns out the Midwest has a funny way of saying Modelo (thanks Flex), and the jury is still out on apricot. And Flex hammers the importance of setting expectations with beer names. And did you know there was a town in Canada called Dildo? They have a brewery. Alaska is coming back around for Ludicrous Libation Laws. Pliny the Younger brings millions in economic impact; it sounds like an important beer. Melvin Brewing is looking for a “partner”… *cough* buyer. Monday Night Brewing is expanding…again. In this week's episode of the Jackson Hole Connection, Stephan chats with Jeremy Tofte. Jeremy is the owner and founder of Thai Me Up restaurant and Melvin Brewing. Jeremy made his way to Jackson in the late ‘90s to couch surf, start a band, and snowboard with dreams of one day starting his own brewery. That dream came to fruition and in 2012, Jeremy and Melvin (formerly Thai Me Up Brewing) blindsided the beer industry when they won three medals at the Great American Beer Festival including a Gold Medal in the IPA category for 2 x 4. In this episode, Jeremy talks about how he started one of the first Thai restaurants in Jackson and why you can always count on seeing a Kung Fu movie playing on the bar screens. He shares how he went from homebrewing to operating a 30 barrel production facility in Alpine. Jeremy discusses the current challenges faced by Melvin and the brewing industry like increased competition and lack of production facilities to scale up. Stephan and Jeremy also talk about why it is important to keep things fun and to enjoy where you work. Look for Melvin Brewing in your local beer section and when in Jackson you can find Melvin at one of our founding sponsors https://www.theliquorstorejacksonhole.com/ (The Liquor Store) and https://jhmarketplace.com/ (Jackson Hole Marketplace). THE SNOWBOARD PROJECT Pro Files : Jeremy Tofte Jeremy grew up in the shadow of Mt. Baker, in Mt. Vernon Washington, home of Craig Kelly, Dano Donnelly and the MBHC. Growing up in one of snowboardings' favorite spots gave him exposure to then world's best, which quickly quashed his dreams of pro rider super stardom - but Jeremy wanted to see where snowboarding could take him - so he set out in an old VW van for a road trip that would eventually take him to Jackson Hole. It was many years and odd jobs before he started the Thai Me Up restaurant in Jackson - which led to the founding Melvin Brewing. After winning three medals at their first American Beer Festival - Melvin quickly became a household name in craft brewing circles. Staying true to his roots in snowboarding and brewing, Jeremy has kept his brewery independent - in a world where small craft beer labels get regularly snapped up by the larger, international brands. This is a story of a snowboarder turned entrepreneur who never gave up on his first passion - riding. Welcome back to Lift Ticket: Resort Riding in Covid Times. For this show we've brought in one of the industry experts - Christian Knapp - to fill us in on how the multibillion dollar resort industry is adapting to a virus that has turned the world upside down. Christian has managed some of the biggest resorts in the world for the past 20 years including Breckenridge and Aspen Snowmass and now he is on the hunt for The Snowboard Project. The season is underway - and with it cases of Covid and ever changing restrictions being put into place around the country. Fortunately we are still able to ride - a very bright spot on an increasingly dark year. In this, our final episode of the mini series we examine what resort riding is like right now, what we can expect from the rest of the season as well as what we can expect next year. We are still game on for this season even if it is shaping up to be much different than expected. We ask that all our listeners do their part now to try and slow the spread of Covid so that we can keep these resorts open. Also tag us in your posts and stories so we can see how your experience is going riding resorts this year. Our next episode will cover the perspective of the riders. Tag us with the hashtag #liftticketpodcast and shoot us a DM - we want to know how it's going on your end! THE SNOWBOARD PROJECT Pro Files : Ken Achenbach Ken may be Canada's first snowboarder - if you don't believe me find someone who went riding before him. While that may be in dispute, The Snowboard Shop is not - it was the world's first snowboard specific retailer - inspiring a generation of Canadian riders. He also built the world's first twin tip snowboard - the Barfoot Twin Tip, created an early snowboard specific clothing line and started The Camp of Campions - a snowboard camp that trained aspiring riders for 25 years. To say Ken is a legend is an understatement - to say that he is still, 40 plus years on, a dedicated snowboarder, is simply a statement of fact. This is a long one - but a good one.
