I discuss the idea of statically typed region-based memory management, proposed by Tofte and Talpin.  The idea is to allow programmers to declare explicitly the region from which to satisfy individual allocation requests.  Regions are created in a statically scoped way, so that after execution leaves the body of the region-creation construct, the entire region may be deallocated.  Type inference is used to make sure that no dangling pointers are dereferenced (after the associated region is deallocated).  This journal paper about the idea is not easy reading, but has a lot of good explanations in and around all the technicalities.  Even better, I found, is this paper about region-based memory management in Cyclone.  There are lots of intuitive explanations of the ideas, and not so much gory technicality.

The iconic portage between Duncan Lake and Rose Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness will take on a new look in 2022 when two sets of wooden staircases will be replaced with stone steps. Stone used in the project will come from the land located between the lakes in the federally-designated wilderness area. Hand tools and other non-motorized instruments will be used to shape the new look of the portage. “We are planning to replace the wooden stairs on the stairway portage with stone steps during the summer of 2022,” said Jon Benson, an assistant ranger for recreation and wilderness on the Tofte and Gunflint ranger districts of Superior National Forest. “Great Lakes Trailbuilders is the contractor with whom we will be working.” The 80-rod portage between Duncan and Rose is among the most highly trafficked areas on the eastern side of the BWCA. Two sets of stairs, with more than 90 steps each, make up most of the portage between the two lakes. The portage largely parallels a set of falls dropping from Duncan down to Rose near the Canadian border in the Mid-Gunflint Trail area. The current look of the portage was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conversation Corps using logs to create a staircase of sorts. Due to the harsh environment in the BWCA, wooden steps or set logs do not hold up well as weather and humans wear on them, according to Willie Bittner, the owner of Wisconsin based Great Lakes Trailbuilders. For example, the wooden steps of the Stairway Portage have been replaced three times in the past 30 years, he said. Rather than continually replace the wood, Bittner had a vision to place stone steps on the portage. Not only will the stone have a more natural look, they should last much longer than the wood version. “This should be there for many generations,” Bittner said of the forthcoming stone staircase between Duncan and Rose. After securing the bid, Bittner and his company are spearheading the project in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and the Conservation Corps of Minnesota. The project comes under the umbrella of the Great American Outdoors Act. Bittner and his team will use rifting hammers to split large rocks weighing up to 200 lbs. each to create the steps, he said. They'll also use a device that he describes as a ‘zip-line for rocks' to set the stones in place. Bittner plans to start the project in May not long after the ice vanishes from West Bearskin Lake and Duncan Lake. The goal is to complete the new Stairway Portage by the Fourth of July, he said. The number of people legally allowed to enter the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) for overnight camping trips from May through September will be reduced for the next paddling season. With permits in high demand during recent paddling seasons – particularly during the past two seasons amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – some canoeists struggled to find available campsites, particularly near popular lakes such as Sawbill, Brule, Duncan and Seagull on the east side of the BWCA. Anecdotally speaking, weary paddlers are quick to complain about racing other groups for campsites, being forced to camp illegally in the brush or making camp in the middle of a pleasant travel day just to ensure they have a site for the night. Each year from May 1 to Sept. 30, visitors taking an overnight paddle or hiking trip, or a motorized day trip into the BWCA are required to obtain a quota permit. The Forest Service designed a quota system following the designation of the Boundary Waters as a wilderness to reduce crowding and visitor impacts on sensitive resources. Forest Service officials said many BWCA entry points and associated routes are regularly experiencing social resource concerns such as crowding, disruptive and oversized groups, lack of campsite availability or unsettling competition for campsites. Illegal camping is also becoming more of a problem in the BWCA. Ten out of the 36 entry points on the Gunflint and six of the 13 entry points on the Tofte districts will see a reduction in permit quota numbers in 2022. The Forest Service declined to say the specific entry points the quota reduction will impact. All districts across the BWCA will see a quota reduction next year other than the Kawishiwi Ranger District.

For nearly 50 years, Enchanted Forest has been the backdrop to countless childhood memories for Oregonians. In a normal season, the family-owned fairytale theme park welcomes nearly 200,000 guests a year. But as coronavirus cases continue to surge, the park has been closed for months. Fearing the park would be closed permanently, founder Roger Tofte and his daughters Susan Vaslev and Mary Tofte turned to crowdfunding to keep the park alive. We talk to the Tofte family about the challenges of keeping Enchanted Forest alive and the generous support of community members.

Like the Skywalker siblings, the Tofte brothers get to spend some quality time with their father in this special episode, where we review the film that started it all: "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope." In the spirit of tradition that started from him taking us to Blockbuster to rent this film on VHS, we all got a chance to relive memories. We still have to marvel at the innovative filmmaking and storytelling that changed cinema forever... and that no one seems to get lost navigating the halls of the Death Star. And although one brother isn't convinced that this movie fully captures the spirit of Star Wars, perhaps the true spirit of Star Wars is family. A tribute to my recently "retired" morning show partner in crime, Ken Johnson!

Dickens’ opening paragraph for “A Tale of Two Cities” provides an appropriate metaphor for the past few years of Melvin Brewing’s existence—best and worst, wisdom and foolishness, belief and incredulity, light and darkness, despair and hope. The highs have been sky-high, with eight GABF medals (six gold), four World Beer Cup medals (two gold), and two first- and one second-place finish in the Alpha King challenge. But the lows have been equally low—a high profile incident in Bellingham, Washington that led to the closure of the expansion brewpub, and the closure of their second expansion brewpub in San Diego. Rather than throw in the towel, founder Jeremy Tofte paused the party and dove into problem solving mode, knowing that the way the company had been cast didn’t reflect the values he and the staff held. Today’s Melvin still loves to have fun, but is more self-conscious and aware, more disciplined, and lets their values power the party. The impact of Melvin on the IPA style has been significant—their early use of whirlpool hopping and high dry hopping levels were once considered absurd by fellow brewers, but are now de rigueur and a core element of today’s hazy and soft IPA. Here, Tofte recounts that innovation process that led them to exploring new techniques to achieve flavors outside of the mainstream. Along the way, he discusses the parameters they change and the ones they keep consistent, the impact of mash temp on recipe scaling, pushing the brewing team to embrace hazy beers, and designing beers for a national palate while still retaining the soul of Melvin. These babies you see before you scarfing down cheesecake are Christy and one of her oldest and dearest friends, Tracy Tofte. You may know her better as Tracy Wells from when she played teenage daughter Heather Owens on “Mr. Belvedere” during the sitcom's six-year run in the '80s. Tracy and Christy have known each other since the seventh grade, having grown up together in Woodland Hills, Calif. But Christy had the pleasure of rediscovering her all over again during this Breakfast All Day A La Carte interview. We covered a ton of ground, including what it was like spending her formative years on television; the Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial she danced in; famous co-stars including Ricky Schroder, Kirk Cameron and Alfonso Ribeiro; her on-screen makeout with a pre-Hulk Mark Ruffalo; and making the tough transition from child stardom to adulthood. We also had to discuss the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” since she was so obsessed with Jackson when we were kids. And we trade plenty of embarrassing stories about each other. Here's evidence we both turned out just fine. We hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed recording it.

During the winter months, the BWCA Wilderness Act of 1978 requires everyone who enters the wilderness to have a permit and generally prohibits recreational snowmobile use. There are exceptions to the snowmobile restriction, including a specific corridor from Seagull River through Saganaga Lake. Jon Benson is the recreation specialist on the Tofte and Gunflint Ranger Districts based in Grand Marais. He stopped by WTIP to talk with Joe Friedrichs about snowmobile policy within the federally-protected wilderness area.
