What if I told you there was a grain that doesn't have to be replanted every spring, that has roots growing 10-feet deep, taking in carbon and holding it deep in the soil, that helps prevent soil erosion and excess fertilizer from washing into our lakes--AND it makes a tasty beer. In this episode, a look at the work behind an experimental batch of Kernza® beer at Karben4 Brewing in Madison that has the farming research world taking notice. Host: Amy Barrilleaux Guest: Joe Walts, Karben4 Brewing Resources for You: Taste the Change: Wisconsin Kenrnza® Natural Climate Solutions: A path forward for Wisconsin's agricultural sector Three cheers for climate beer! All hail the golden age of beer! Today there are nearly nine thousand breweries in the US alone, brewing an enormous range of styles from imperial stouts to double India pale ales, golden pilsners, briny melon goses, and much more. But while this breadth can delight the taste buds all year, how does one choose what to drink without feeling overwhelmed or defaulting to the same brews again and again? Acclaimed beer expert Tom Acitelli presents a fifty-two week guide to choosing the perfect beer to complement every week of the year. With tasting notes, brand recommendations, a guide to how to best serve, sip, and savor, plus fascinating backstories and trivia, Acitelli unearths what beer lovers actually care about and reveals how to appreciate the best that the golden age of beer has to offer. You can get a copy of the book HERERecorded at Notch Brewing - Brighton( Boston) March 5, 2025

Adam Ray, founder of the Santa Rosa Beer City Festival, and Colin McDonald from HenHouse join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha. Also in the studio is Ryan Silva, winner of the golden growler. Colin was on Brew Ha Ha last June 13, 2024, when HenHouse was getting ready for the Freshtival. Adam Ray is the founder of Beer City Festival, Colin McDonald is here from HenHouse for the annual Big Chicken release, and Ryan Silva won the Golden Growler trophy, which he has broght. Beer City was born in Santa Rosa, THEE Beer City. There is a running event in the morning then a party in the afternoon. HenHouse is participating in Beer City and also in the Santa Rosa Beer Passport. They can't have Big Chicken on Saturday, it will only be at the brewery that day. Big Chicken is HenHouse's once-a-year special IPA. After Saturday it will be available in all their retail locations. Racing and Drinking Beer, or Just Drinking Beer There is a series of four of races at all the four different Beer City locations. There are races for 5K, 10K and half marathon. Runners can gain points by running more races for longer distance at better times. They announce the overall men's and women's winners at the end of the last day of races. Ryan won the giant growler as the overall men's winner last year. New this year is Race the Rex, a person in a dinosaur costume. You run a lap and take a drink. If the T Rex catches you, you're out. If you lose your cookies, you're out. It sounds very complicated, but they will have ushers and judges. Colin explains the mission of Big Chicken. Every year the recipe changes. Steve says it's delicious. Colin says they try to bring to every Big Chicken all that they learned about making hoppy beer during the last year. They are using special hops which are cryogenically extracted so that the beer is “oily” with hop flavor. Big Chicken The Big Chicken they are tasting was tapped off the main tank about 15 minutes ago. They are celebrating 13 years at HenHouse. Colin realizes that places him in the generation of distinguished elder craft brewers. 95% of their beer is sold in the bay area. Mark Carpenter, “a living legend” former BHH co-host and Anchor brewer, loves HenHouse. Take the Smart Train, it's sponsored and is there to help you get around while you enjoy Beer City Festival and while you fill out your Beer Passport. Visit Santa Rosa is a sponsor. Every Beer City attracts 60% visitors from out of county.

This is a nice li'l song to go with "I'm Drinking Beer for Christmas." It's a teeny tiny bit apocalyptic. I'll leave it to the listener to decide why I feel apocalyptic.
This is a song about not feeling very Christmas-y. In cases like this, it's always a good idea to drink beer.
GRAHAM VOTED FOR PEDRO RETURNS TO THE PODCAST Last November, Graham won the 2023 NCAA title on the grass and two weeks later put an NCAA record to his name. New to tinned fish? We got you covered. This was bound to happen. With our recently found love of tinned fish we had an expert join us to talk about the benefits of tinned fish and offer up some beer pairing suggestions. We know cans of sardines and oysters aren't for everyone. But these delicious fishes get a bit of a bad wrap, especially here in the States. Season Brand marketing manager Sara Kelly hung out with this to share some of the pros of tinned seafood, info on their offerings, and even throw out some beer pairing suggestions.Tinned fish is trendy now. I don't know how or why, but it is. TikTok influencers are throwing up videos of their favorite tins and recipes. It's crazy. BUT... sardines and other tinned fish do have a lot of benefits - not only are they convenient but they're packed with nutrients (get all those Omega-3s) and protein. Just watch that salt intake since they're usually pretty high on that as well.If you're not down with skarfing whole little fishies there are boneless and skinless sardines or you can opt for salmon, trout, oysters, mussels, calamari, and octopus. Go all Pokemon on the tins and catch them all.Don't worry, we've got some actual beer content as well!Anchor Brewing has been purchased! This is the big one this week. The founder of Chobani (yes, the yogurt folks) has purchased Anchor Brewing. It sounds like he intends to honor it's legacy in his plans. We're very hopeful and we'll keep an eye on progress here.Sam Adams sale rumors. Buzz around the internet this week said Sam Adams was in talks to sell to Suntory. Suntory said that's BS, Sam Adams said they don't comment on rumors. Is it possible this billion-dollar-brewery is up for grabs?Shout out to Native Brew Works. I recently visited the old stomping grounds of Arkansas and was pleased to find Native Brew Works in Jonesboro. They're in a dry county and, as beer laws go, they are required to sell food to serve beer. But they CAN sell beer... even though it's a dry county. I tried their Kolsch and Dunkel and both were very solid. Henry talks with Stuart Lloyd about his new book Started Out Just Drinking Beer: the Mental As Anything Story. Josh Deth, founder of Revolution Brewing, talks about the basics of beer brewing and how it can be sustainable. In addition to using solar energy, recycled packaging, and rooftop beehives, Josh discusses what they do with the byproducts of the brewing process. He says spent grain is the number one byproduct, and the protein-rich hops can be used to feed cattle. Josh also explains how his brewery's byproducts help clean the city's wastewater and how the spent yeast and hops become part of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District's treatment program.

After watching the Manti Te'o story on the Netflix show, "Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist", my opinion of the situation changed. Manti was catfished by someone while he was a star player at Notre Dame. And the drama that unfolded, is mind-blowing.Over the weekend Tom Hardy won two gold medals in a Jiu-Jitsu tournament in England. He may be the only action star that could pull this off, right? Tom Cruise - no.Dwayne Johnson - no.Sylvester Stallone - no.Will Smith - no. Unless it's a slapping contest.Arnold Schwarzenegger - no.Matt Damon - no.Keanu Reeves - no.Dennis Rodman says he is heading to Russia in push to release Brittney Griner. If he succeeds, that'll be really embarrassing for the U.S. government.A man accidentally cut off his own testicles while napping and dreaming about cutting meat. And a man should be praised for his creativity after a video emerged of him drinking beer through a hotdog while at a Yankees game.
