Die Ulmer Regionalgruppe gehört zum Verein Boys to Men Mentoring Deutschland e.V.

In ancient Greece, famous Goddess Athena was known to take the form of a man to mentor Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, and converse about power, wisdom, and direction to become successful. The  focal point of the story displays that in fact there is an uncomfortable barrier between men and women when it comes to mentorship. This week, the team welcomes our special guest Liz, a female U.S. Army commander and blackhawk pilot, to discuss the importance of men mentoring women, while addressing and creating solutions to the hardest challenges this ultimately brings. Key Discussion Points: -Perspectives from both male/female leaders on appropriate/inappropriate interactions. -Communication barriers -Professionalism and Culture -Multiple challenges women face in gendered work environments - Why men, as a group, are so bad at cross-gender mentoring -Negative and Positive effects of mixed gender units on the force and family For further information, we highly suggest the following books by W. What if parenting, teaching, or just hanging out with teens could be easier and less stressful. What if we adults could adopt a few simple techniques to help kids make good decisions, free up their own authentic wisdom, AND build closer relationships. This week, we’re talking with Adam Young. Adam spent 10 years as a classroom teacher and nearly as long as a mentor and program director for Boys to Men Mentoring. (The nonprofit org I used to head) At Boys to Men, Adam was key to the expansion of our school circles - we talk about “circles” a lot in this episode. They are simply hour-long support groups consisting of 8-10 boys and 3-4 adults. At our peak, BTM was conducting 16 weekly circles in half a dozen schools. This model is in use in schools all around the country and the world. These days, Adam is one of the principals of a new consulting and training program called Circle Dynamics Group. The Circle Dynamics Group works with schools to train teachers and education leaders to quickly build interpersonal connections that encourage trust and deeper conversation with students. They have an open set of workshops coming up July 21st - 30th. You might want to strap in a little more tightly than normal this week. Some of the ways that Adam works with teens - the radical trust, the abandonment of adult privilege and power - might rock your world and your assumptions. Today we discuss how to reprogram our thinking, adjust our point of view, and generate a compelling future that's bigger and brighter than we've ever dreamed possible.   When it comes to expanding what's possible in our lives, the first and most important step in the right direction is changing our point of view. But, how do we actually do that? In my own life, I've learned that being of service to others will significantly shift our focus. Our lives become less about ourselves and more devoted towards how we can really contribute and make a difference in other people's lives. My first guest, Jim Justice, is someone that has really inspired me and helped change the way that I deliver my message in the world. Through his personal journey of entrepreneurship, he discovered a parallel path of pursuing his spiritual truth. This journey has led Jim to co-found an amazing app called The Vibe, which serves as a daily dose of mindfulness and guidance helping individuals live a balanced and fulfilled life. My next guests, Craig McClain and Joe Sigurdson, have co-founded an organization called Boys to Men Mentoring, which is helping to change the world through the care and support of our younger generation. Craig and Joe share how their non-profit organization is committed to creating communities of dedicated men who are able to guide and support at-risk, often fatherless, boys on their journey to manhood.   We Discuss: Reprogramming our thinking and changing our point of view to a higher vantage point Breaking through the limits of our own contribution and making an impact in the world Significantly shifting our focus in life by giving back and being of service to others Becoming comfortable with a new perspective that is more aligned with who we want to be Utilizing the power of mindfulness, guidance, and balance in our personal transformations What sets The Vibe app apart from the other mindfulness apps available today The importance of a safe space to talk about our struggles, choices, and consequences Why we need the Boys to Men Mentoring program and how it's making a difference Why school shootings are on the rise and what most mass shooters have in common The courage to tell the truth and dive into the unknown parts of ourselves   Visit:  VoicesofCourage.us

Thought leaders in mentoring and networking join this episode to share stories and lessons for men as allies and those looking to diversify their networks. Dr. David Smith, co-author of Athena Rising:  How and Why Men Should Mentor Women and gender expert, shares his candid conversation giving a peer constructive feedback.  In his story, he confronts benevolent sexist behavior with one of his peers in the military.  Similar to chivalry, benevolent sexism refers to protecting or treating women differently.  It is often done with good intentions, yet is unhelpful for women long term.  While men often are socialized to be the “knights in shining armor,” that is not what an ally does.  Allies help those they mentor, sponsor, and/or champion to instead advocate for themselves. Amy is the author of Networking Beyond Bias:  Making Diversity a Competitive Edge in Your Career.  She shares her own personal story of addressing gender bias in the moment and how she called out negative behavior, leading to positive change.  As Amy describes for our listeners, diversity goes beyond just race, gender, LGBTQ, or abilities, it is how we think and how we behave.  She offers a clear strategy to diversify your network – reach out to those outside of your own industry.  While it feels good to be comfortable with those like us, we learn when we are uncomfortable.  We learn more from others different than us. Both Amy and David have an important message for men to engage as allies and mentors, rather than shy away, especially in a #metoo era.  Follow David at http://www.davidgsmithphd.com/.
