Shudder’s Zoom-based film Host (2020) is the belle of the COVID-19-horror-film ball. This fun and imaginative movie is a great way to spend an hour at the end of a depressing work day. Alexandre Franchi has pivoted trauma into art and it displayed beautifully in his new film “Happy Face”. He goes into personal stories about his mom’s and his own cancer diagnosis and how that fueled his artistic drive. He also speaks about his intense casting process for the film and how he held training sessions with the actors before filming. In the intro, Randy took too many mushrooms for Terrence Malick. Next thing he knows, he’s on a plane to San Francisco to screen his film and win the Audience Award for Best Feature.
