Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Mindful Monday is the best way to start your week. Sign up for free here: https://ryanhawk.kit.com/profile Bob Stoops was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2021. He was the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 to 2016. He led the Sooners to a 191-48 record over his career. His 2000/2001 team won the national championship. He earned the National Coach of the Year award the same season. Since 2020, Stoops has been a head coach in the XFL, winning an XFL Championship in 2023 with the Arlington Renegades. He played college football at the University of Iowa, earning team MVP his senior year as a defensive back. Notes: Coaches Bob has worked for: Hayden Fry at Iowa, Bill Snyder at Kansas State, and Steve Spurrier at Florida. He's worked for some amazing coaches. Relationships are everything. You must connect with people. You must be authentic. Learn from other coaches, but you have to be yourself Sherri Coale: “One of my favorite things about him is he's the busiest man on the planet but never appeared that way. That's a skill and an art. That fascinates me.” What makes a great head coach? They relate to people. They care about them. They can motivate and influence by clearly sharing the vision of the program and inspiring others to get on board. They are decisive people. Most importantly, they know how to connect with people. All leadership is a people business. If you can't connect with others, you'll probably struggle. Creating a “coaches forest” (beyond a tree) - Mike Stoops, Mark Mangino, Mike Leach, Bo Pelini, Kevin Sumlin, Kevin Wilson, Lincoln Riley, and more. How has Bob prepared so many guys to be successful head coaches? Hiring – “I always tried to hire people smarter than me.” A lot of people say this, but not all do this. Coach Stoops looked for people who had a track record of performance… And then he used his gut instincts after he spent time with him. He paid attention to how they treated his secretary, how they treated the waiter at lunch… Some call those the little things, but they were very important to Coach Stoops The overarching theme of the entire conversation was the simplicity of how Coach Stoops built his program. He didn't try to overcomplicate anything. He knew he wanted coaches who were accomplished, high-character people. And he wanted tough players who loved football. Their offenses may have looked exotic but they didn't have a ton of plays installed. They focused on what they did and then practiced it relentlessly so that they would execute better than their opponents. I think there's something beautiful in the simplicity with how he's built his program and the results speak for themselves. Great players want to be coached - Jeremiah Smith, Adrian Peterson. What he looked for in players: They have to LOVE football. Need to be tough and physical. Someone like Dan Cody. From Oklahoma, was skinny, and nobody on the staff wanted to give him a scholarship, but Coach Stoops did, and he turned out to be a great player. Liked to keep local guys home. Off-season workouts create the culture of the team. "We won because we outworked everyone." The attitude of the national championship team - "They were tired of being kicked around." And "I shared with them the history of Oklahoma and let them know the way it should be. When we started, they were a losing team." Josh Heupel - The most valuable recruit ever for Coach Stoops. Mike Leach was a 1 of 1. An original. He seemed relaxed and casual, but he was also very demanding that they do it right. He was also focused on just a few plays instead of trying to do everything. FOCUS. Do what we do Wife Carol - Impressive leader at Mary Kay. Won a pink Cadillac 16 years in a row. National Sales Director. Life/Career Advice - Go hard, be tough, be true to yourself, enjoy the struggle, and look forward to the fight. Nothing great happens without going through struggles first.

PostGame: TCU takes Sooners to woodshed 55-24, so how does Venables and his staff fix this problem?  TimeStamps: 00:00 - The podcast starts and Brandon and Parker go off right from the get-go. 03:00 - Dillon Gabriel and Damond Harmon injury updates 05:00 - Brandon and Parker are at a loss for words when it comes to talking about what they witnessed vs TCU. 07:00 - Should OU look to a four-man front instead of a three-man front? Brandon discusses personnel with Isaiah Coe, Jalen Redmond, Kelvin Gilliam, and others playing the interior defensive line. And he asks when they start playing Jaren Kanak more. When will they start to give players like Robert Spears-Jennings a look at safety? What about the younger players in general and giving them a look to see what they can bring to the table on Saturdays? 11:00 - Injuries, injuries, injuries... 13:00 - Parker calls his shot and says this about OU performance the rest of the year (listen to hear his prediction)... How can you recruit so many four and five-star players and struggle like this? And the question is asked if the Sooners lack of intricate defense under Grinch causes the in-depth playbook of Venables' defense to be too vast for some? 18:00 - Dillon Gabriel looked to be pressing and his passes looked high and too far on multiple occasions, so did a certain sect of fans going after him (unjustly vs Kstate, according to Brandon and Parker) cause him to have some added pressure that he put upon himself. Or, did the moment put pressure on him? Either way, that was rough to watch before he was cheapshot with the targeting hit. 23:30 - TCU followed Kstate blueprint vs OU with a lot of six man lines on offense ( leaving TE in). How can OU combat that moving forward, because if they don't, it's going to be a long year. And can playing the younger guys help in multiple facets? R Mason Thomas return make a difference? Gracen Haltom? Jaren Kanak? Robert Spear-Jennings good enough yet? Something has to give and soon! 34:00 - Recruiting aftermath with the losses? Does the 2023 class feel that BV will fix things when they arrive? Before? What have we heard so far? What about five-star QB Jackson Arnold? Four-star DE Colton Vasek? Others? 41:00 - Does the residual effect of previous defensive regime's cause the defense to have some PTSD type reaction when things start to go bad? Big play given up and then say, "here we go again." And then things just continue to avalanche? 46:00 - Brandon starts to name where all of the starters were ranked coming out of high school. It's impressive, but also very concerning that OU has this much trouble with this much talent, no matter who the DC is or who is running the defense. Mike Stoops. Alex Grinch. And last two games, Brent Venables. 51:00 - Off the cuff final record predictions from Brandon and Parker. They don't feel it's set in stone, but it's plausible. 55:00 - Final thoughts from Brandon and Parker. 1:03:29 - The podcast ends To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. In the opening take, Lee says OU's in a better position now than they were 10 days ago. Then Grant joins to talk about his favorite celebration style (5:45) before we stop messing around and talk about what we think of Brent Venables getting the head coaching job at OU (7:25). Venables addressed "why now" is the time he finally took a head coaching job. What are the chances he's going to be a good coach (14:10)? Lee begins pitching to Grant why he thinks OU is in a better place now compared to when Lincoln Riley left the program. Culture and team identity are important and it's going to chance under Venables (28:35). OU's defense is going to be better under Venables. We're excited to see how some of the current players develop under a new coaching staff (39:00). We pulled a soundbite of Venables talking about his offensive philosophy. We like that Venables is a coach who will tweak and coach game-to-game based on opponent. He also sounds like someone who wants to get the ball to his playmakers as much as possible. Lee also talks about that time the "Freezing Cold Takes" Twitter account got him (51:30). Was halftime during the OU-Georgia Rose Bowl the highest point of OU's Lincoln Riley tenure (1:02:05)? Lee continues his pitch to Grant. OU's offense will take a dip, right? Well... maybe, but also the ceiling could be higher with Venables/Lebby compared to Riley/Grinch (1:06:20). Do we think Caleb Williams is going to stay at OU? OU's got a better shot to win a National Championship in the next 2 years than USC, right (1:18:15)? We give our thoughts on Venables' coaching staff coming together. A lot of the original OU offensive staff sounds like they're staying on (1:26:35). Who the heck is Venables going to bring on as defensive assistants? No Jamar Cain is a bummer. Will anything come out on the Roy Manning/USC recruiting stuff? What's going to happen with Calvin Thibodeaux and Brian Odom (1:32:15)? Who's going to be the defensive coordinator? It's not going to be Mike Stoops is it? Jerry Schmidt is returning to OU. The gang is getting back together -- is that a good, or bad thing? Is OU more injured than other teams (1:42:40)? We do a horrible job of explaining players who have opted out of the Alamo Bowl. We're probably delirious at this point (1:53:00). We read a comment from a long time listener who has a few hot takes about the recent shake up at Oklahoma (1:55:30). Grant tells us which Bowl games he's interested in. He thinks Cincinnati has a shot to beat Alabama (2:05:20). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonNews9
