Ground and pound. That's what defined college football offenses for the first 100 years the game was played. But then a coach named Hal Mumme hooked up with some lawyer from LA named Mike Leach … and everything changed. Playbooks were tossed. Passes were thrown. Records were broken. And the Air Raid offense was born. Now everyone from your local high school QB to Patrick Mahomes is executing some version of this on Game Day. And when it's done right … man, it is fun to watch. So today, Dave Wilson delivers the origin story of this innovative offense and tells us how this once taboo concept changed the game of football forever. Learn more about your ad choices. He's been a teammate, player or business associate with some of the biggest names in sports: Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, John Elway, Tiger Woods and Arnold Schwarzenegger to name a few. Throughout Brad Pyatt's football career he networked and learned from the best of the best. It started at Arvada West High School when he played under a brand-new high school coach named Dave Logan and the Wildcats won a state championship in 1997. The wide receiver was heavily recruited and opted for Kentucky under Hal Mumme where the “Air Raid” offense was popularized and eventually copied by many college and NFL teams. While Brad made receptions look easy at Kentucky, the game wasn't easy on his body and he missed Colorado. He finished his college career with a year at UNC in Greeley where he soaked up knowledge from legendary head coach Kay Dalton. Brad caught on with Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent in 2003 and stayed with the Colts for three seasons, again learning and watching some of the best players and coaches. Unfortunately, the injuries piled up in the NFL just like they did in college. After leaving the Colts, he played a couple seasons with Elway's Colorado Crush Arena team and was done… with football. After football, the business side of Brad took over and he started MusclePharm which grew to a $170 million a year business with big-name endorsers. A couple years before he left to start more business ventures, Brad became the head coach of his alma mater in 2014. When he interviewed for the job, he presented a 10-year plan to bring A-West football back to what it was when he played. It's working.

The Miami Hurricanes have hired Shannon Dawson to be their new offensive coordinator. He leaves the same job at Houston to take his coaching talents to Coral Gables. Dawson runs an air raid after learning from Hal Mumme and Dana Holgorson. He also appreciates the line of scrimmage and a strong running game, which is where his philosophy matches up with Mario Cristobal.Host Alex Donno reacts to the hire and explains why every Miami Hurricanes fan should be happy with this one. Houston's offenses were far better than Miami's in every category last season. The work Dawson did with Cougars quarterback Clayton Tune should bode well for Tyler Van Dyke in 2023. Donno expects Dawson to double as the quarterbacks coach, so now Miami needs to find a wide receivers coach to round out the offensive staff. The Miami Hurricanes have reportedly interviewed former Clemson offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter and Texas A&M tight ends coach James Coley for their open OC position. This was reported by David Lake of Inside The U, who reports Mario Cristobal is set to interview Houston OC Shannon Dawson this weekend. Houston's offense ranked inside the top 25 nationally in most categories last season. Per the Miami rivals site, former North Texas head coach Seth Littrell is another name to watch. Alex Donno breaks down these candidates and analyzes the fact that Mario Cristobal appears to be opening his search to some candidates with an air raid background. Littrell learned under Mark Leach while Dawson came up with Hal Mumme. Perhaps Cristobal is not limiting his options to those with a power spread philosophy. Donno shares the newest details on why linebackers coach Charlie Strong has decided to leave The U. Special guest Melissa aka Hoodie Girl joins the show! Melissa gives her take on the OC search and how she'd like to see it resolved. Melissa and Alex discuss Devin Hester being snubbed from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Melissa previews a big upcoming weekend of Canes basketball. Jim Larranaga's team will host Louisville on Saturday before heading to Chapel Hill for a Monday night showdown with North Carolina. Hal Mumme was the best at using the phrase " look for grass"...We take it one step further and talk about creating your grass as a BadAss OC!
Many words can be used to describe the man known as college football's Pirate — “quirky,” “unique,” “genius” — but one thing is certain: Mike Leach beat to the rhythm of his own drum. In this episode we look into the legacy of Mike Leach. Joining Hal Mumme's staff is 1989 as the OC at Iowa Wesleyan, the Valdosta State, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. His first head coaching gig was at Texas Tech from 2000-09, then transformed and revitalized the town of Pullman, WA while at Washington State from 2012-19. Mississippi State is where his career ended as he moved on to greener fields in a place we can only imagine. The legacy that will outlive him is, of course, the “Air Raid” offense that his former boss, Hal Mumme, created and he essentially perfected. It's appropriate that Leach won his last game — the Egg Bowl against arch-rival Ole Miss. But that's just a victory that lives on paper. Leach's real victory was in life. To a man, every coach who has made any kind of statement about his passing liked him as a person, respected his high level of intelligence and feared his “Air Raid” offense. For this week's solo wrap-up pod, I discuss the significance of Mike Leach, and how his thoughtful and intentional way of understanding the game was analytics without numbers.Plus, I introduce the first selection in what will hopefully be an ongoing thing: The Unexpected Points Book Club. We're going to start with The Perfect Pass by S.C. Gwynne. It's a fantastic story of the Air Raid's founding and ascendance, with Hal Mumme and Mike Leach prominently featured. Lots of lessons from this book to apply to any endeavor, especially when looking to challenge the establishment order.I lastly have some Q&A from the livestream and detail this weeks research on Joe Burrow's declining sack rate and Adjusted Quarterback Efficiency (AQE).Leave comments about “The Perfect Pass” here if you've already read the book, or are now motivated to start, and I'll discuss them in the next episode. I'm planning on reviewing the first half of the book (Chapters 1-10) in next Friday's pod.Take care. Thanks for reading Unexpected Points! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. My guest today on this football conversation is Stan Bedwell who's one of the premier disciples of Hal Mumme's creation – The Air Raid Offense. My first recollection of meeting Stan was when he was Co-Offensive Coordinator at Manchester University during our game in Defiance, Ohio. Stan has lived the life of a Football Troubadour singing the virtues of the Air Raid on an International stage. He is also known for his karaoke performances. Stan has played overseas for many years and his playing career in Europe has given him the opportunity to explore some beautiful cities and interesting regions of the world. As he straddles his chosen vagabond lifestyle as a football coach and mentor of coaches in the Air Raid he stays uniquely grounded in his lifestyle. I'm sure you will enjoy listening to this International Man of Mystery, the incomparable Stan Bedwell, as he creates a football coaching life on his terms. On the latest episode of the Rex Chapman Show with Josh Hopkins, the guys are gearing up for the Super Bowl with Kentuckuy Legend and former No 1 overall pick Tim Couch. The guys talk to Tim about how he put Kentucky Football on the map, how his NFL career didn't go the way he wanted and why he continues to celebrate the game of football. With Super Bowl 56 right around the corner, what makes Joe Burrow so special? You can follow Tim Couch on Twitter and Instagram 13:30 - Tim realized pretty early on he was a great athlete, but he thought it was just because he grew up in a small town in Kentucky. It wasn't until he started going to football and basketball camps, playing against better competition, when he realized he was really special. 16:30 - Being a quarterback was always comfortable for Tim, but he grew up wanting to become the next Rex Chapman. Rex and Rick Pitino did everything they could to get Tim to become a Wildcat. 21:30 - As the National player of the year, it was a tough decision for Tim to decide on where to go to college. With offers from some of the best programs in the country, why did he commit to a 1-win Kentucky football program? 24:30 - After a tough freshman year, Tim speaks to the commitment Kentucky gave him in hiring Hal Mumme and Mike Leach to run the air raid offense and how they unlocked the Number 1 passing offense in all of college football. 30:30 - How close was Tim Couch to becoming Mr Kentucky in both Football and Basketball? 42:30 - Part of the appeal of going to Kentucky was not only going to his home-state school, but he wanted to make an impact and put that program on the map. Now with Mark Stoops, the program has taken the next step to where they are a legitimate SEC contender year after year. 45:15 - Tim describes the process he went through before being the No 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. After being built up his entire life, the NFL was breaking him down, trying to find any flaws they could when comparing him to Donovan McNabb and Akili Smith. 49:40 - Rex and Tim speak to the opportunities and responsibilities that come with playing a sport at the highest levels. Whether it was playing at Kentucky or professionally, there's no handbook on growing up fast, handling pressure as a teenager or a 20-something year old. 56:20 - How familiar was Tim with the Cleveland Browns' history before he was drafted as the face of the franchise? Rex describes what it was like when he was the first-ever pick of the Charlotte Hornets. 1:01:20- How important it was for the city of Cleveland to finally make the playoffs in 2002 and just how frustrating it was for Tim to play all year, only to miss the team's first playoff game in decades because of a broken leg. 1:05:30 - How difficult it was for Tim to leave the NFL after multiple comeback attempts, and how becoming a father made him feel like he had a purpose beyond football. 1:12:00 - Previewing Super Bowl 56, Tim likes both QBs with Matthew Stafford's redemption story and the incredible poise of Joe Burrow. With a limited slate in Week 1, they were still able to find some best bets for the show. With a light betting card, the guys took the opportunity to break down the next big betting event this weekend, the 92nd Academy Awards! For the first time in nearly 20 years, the XFL will once again take its rightful place on our televisions. With Vince McMahon guarantying us that he has a three-year plan, at least, we can embrace the league without the fear of being put through another AAF fiasco. Ryan made it clear that he has the most confidence in the Dallas Renegades this weekend. With an experienced winner at the helm in Bob Stoops and the "godfather of the air-raid" Hal Mumme calling the plays, the Renegades have set themselves up for success. Jason, on the other hand, finds being a Dolphin fan stressful enough, so he will watch and enjoy the XFL. The duo agrees that the Tampa Bay Vipers have the best uniforms in the league, but they cannot come to terms on the Wildcats team name. Then, when the first week's games were broken down, the guys decided to hand out some of their favorite Oscar bets. Yes, you can bet on the Oscars. With some inside information coming from Ryan, the hosts decided that the Joker could shock the world and upset 1917 come this Sunday. They disagree on the Irishman, but that doesn't stop Jason from sharing some of his famous random facts. If you like Joe Pesci, then you will love this episode. It might not be the NFL, but the Academy Awards will bring the heat!

Zach Betz joins Matt Waldman's RSP Cast for a discussion about the Air Raid scheme, the Cardinals offense, and Kliff Kingsbury. Betz (@alltwentytwo on Twitter) has spent a lot of time studying two schemes: Sean McVay's outside zone scheme in L.A. and variations of the Air Raid used by Hal Mumme, Mike Leach, and Kliff Kingsbury. With Kingsbury's arrival in Arizona, I invited Betz to share his thoughts on Kingsbury's version of the Air Raid, his coaching prowess, and the outlook for the Arizona Cardinals offense. Topics: The Air Raid isn't new to the NFL. Kingsbury's creativity with formations and personnel usage sets him apart. Why "playground ball" is a good thing. Should we be concerned about the Cardinals offensive line? Thoughts on Hakeem Butler and Andy Isabella's futures in this offense. Why David Johnson should see an offensive resurgence. Kingsbury's weaknesses as a coach. An extended conversation on coaching and management. The Spread Air Raid Mesh Concept is THE BEST passing concept there is in all of football. (If you don't believe me then we are going to fight.) But how should you run the concept? Should you run it the Hal Mumme way? The Mike Leach way? Or the way other ways smart coaches have come up with? Well... ...this spring I've discovered how NASTY the Air Raid Mesh Concept is when you run it the Lincoln Riley way. And that's what I talk about in today's episode of Talking Football with Coach McKie. You'll learn from this episode: Who created this *new* 3 x 1 Mesh Why this version of the Mesh concept is better Different TAGS you can use with this 3 x 1 Mesh Why you need to run the Air Raid Mesh Concept Thanks for Listening! In this episode Coach Hargitt begins a 3 part podcast series on the evolution of the Air Raid Offense, starting with Air Raid 1.0 in this show. Air Raid 1.0 (the past) emphasized throwing the ball, not much in the run game, no RPOs, and not much value on time management or balance. 1.0 was of course started by Hal Mumme and Mike Leach.

What's the first word that comes to your mind when someone says "Air Raid Offense"? Is it throwing for over 1,000 yards? Is it scoring 500 points? Or is it Hal Mumme and the Mesh Concept? Because it better be Hal Mumme and the Mesh Concept. Why? Because the Mesh Concept is to Air Raid as the Veer is to the Flexbone and the Buck Sweep is to the Wing-T. It is THE PLAY that makes the Air Raid offense the Air Raid offense. And in today's episode of Talking Football with Coach McKie, I'm going to talk about the ONE SECRET to running the Mesh Concept to PERFECTION! You'll learn from this episode: Why You Need to Run the Mesh Concept a Certain Way. How Some Teams Who Call Themselves Air Raid are kidding Themselves. The Coaching Tree out of the Kentucky Air Raid System is well known. Let's take a look at the playbook that started it all. Hal Mumme's 1997 Kentucky football team brought the new Air Raid Offense to the SEC. They were throwing the ball all over the place. The Air Raid System uses a unique philosophy of distributing the ball to your athletes in space using the passing attack. It might seem complex. When you get into the inner workings this is an extremely well designed offensive system built on a few core plays. I'll break down what you can find in the 1997 Kentucky Offensive Playbook. There's some great nuggets of information in here, even if you're not an Air Raid guy!

Today on the podcast, Michael Covel opens up relating a Bob Dylan lyric to uncertainty. You can’t tell what’s going to happen tomorrow; you can’t tell what’s going to happen to people in your life. You can just go with it--you can just keep on keeping on. But predicting tomorrow, thinking that you have an explanation as to how it’s going to actually unfold? You’re kidding yourself if you think you can predict tomorrow. People are paid a lot of money to pretend that they can predict tomorrow. But it is pretending, no doubt about it. Covel moves into his main topic for the day, noting that since March of 2009, stocks have taken off. It’s a massive trend--a trend following dream for stocks. Covel also sees that the fundamental guys look at the all-time highs with justifications. Trend followers have no justifications. There have been millions of words since March of 2009 written by fundamental traders justifying the all-time highs, and people get paid a lot of money to write these justifications. What will all those words count for if the S&P makes another 50% drop? How do you make a fundamental decision in the face of a game where fundamentally, the only thing you really have is “can you predict what the Federal Reserve will do next?” Covel also shares some words of wisdom from trend following trader Jerry Parker that he obtained through a recent email, as well as words from Tom Basso and David Cheval. These traders all agree on one thing: ride the trend. Building on these thoughts, Covel moves into talking about football, Chip Kelly, the Philadelphia Eagles, Hal Mumme, and Mike Leach. Covel uses this as a metaphor for why you can’t be a trend following trader in one market alone. So, if you can’t predict tomorrow, what can you do? You can take what’s given. You can take the trend that arrives. Want a free trend following DVD? Go to trendfollowing.com/win.
