Sign up for free here: https://ryanhawk.kit.com/profile Bob Stoops was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2021. He was the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 to 2016. He led the Sooners to a 191-48 record over his career. His 2000/2001 team won the national championship. He earned the National Coach of the Year award the same season. Since 2020, Stoops has been a head coach in the XFL, winning an XFL Championship in 2023 with the Arlington Renegades. He played college football at the University of Iowa, earning team MVP his senior year as a defensive back. Notes: Coaches Bob has worked for: Hayden Fry at Iowa, Bill Snyder at Kansas State, and Steve Spurrier at Florida. He's worked for some amazing coaches. Relationships are everything. You must connect with people. You must be authentic. Learn from other coaches, but you have to be yourself Sherri Coale: “One of my favorite things about him is he's the busiest man on the planet but never appeared that way. That's a skill and an art. That fascinates me.” What makes a great head coach? They relate to people. They care about them. They can motivate and influence by clearly sharing the vision of the program and inspiring others to get on board. They are decisive people. Most importantly, they know how to connect with people. All leadership is a people business. If you can't connect with others, you'll probably struggle. Creating a “coaches forest” (beyond a tree) - Mike Stoops, Mark Mangino, Mike Leach, Bo Pelini, Kevin Sumlin, Kevin Wilson, Lincoln Riley, and more. How has Bob prepared so many guys to be successful head coaches? Hiring – “I always tried to hire people smarter than me.” A lot of people say this, but not all do this. Coach Stoops looked for people who had a track record of performance… And then he used his gut instincts after he spent time with him. He paid attention to how they treated his secretary, how they treated the waiter at lunch… Some call those the little things, but they were very important to Coach Stoops The overarching theme of the entire conversation was the simplicity of how Coach Stoops built his program. He didn't try to overcomplicate anything. He knew he wanted coaches who were accomplished, high-character people. And he wanted tough players who loved football. Their offenses may have looked exotic but they didn't have a ton of plays installed. They focused on what they did and then practiced it relentlessly so that they would execute better than their opponents. I think there's something beautiful in the simplicity with how he's built his program and the results speak for themselves. Great players want to be coached - Jeremiah Smith, Adrian Peterson. What he looked for in players: They have to LOVE football. Need to be tough and physical. Someone like Dan Cody. From Oklahoma, was skinny, and nobody on the staff wanted to give him a scholarship, but Coach Stoops did, and he turned out to be a great player. Liked to keep local guys home. Off-season workouts create the culture of the team. "We won because we outworked everyone." The attitude of the national championship team - "They were tired of being kicked around." And "I shared with them the history of Oklahoma and let them know the way it should be. When we started, they were a losing team." Josh Heupel - The most valuable recruit ever for Coach Stoops. Mike Leach was a 1 of 1. An original. He seemed relaxed and casual, but he was also very demanding that they do it right. He was also focused on just a few plays instead of trying to do everything. FOCUS. Do what we do Wife Carol - Impressive leader at Mary Kay. Won a pink Cadillac 16 years in a row. National Sales Director. Life/Career Advice - Go hard, be tough, be true to yourself, enjoy the struggle, and look forward to the fight. Nothing great happens without going through struggles first.
Welcome to the Max Out Mindset Podcast. This is your host, Dr. Larry Widman, and my co-host, Coach Jess Knecht. Our guest today is someone who knows all about performing under pressure and achieving greatness. She has had an extraordinary athletic and coaching career. Her journey started as a standout athlete at Georgia Tech University, where she played on the right side and helped her team reach the Elite Eight in 2003. Her coaching career has been equally impressive, with stops at Appalachian State, the University of Miami, and the University of Kansas. As an assistant coach at Kansas, she played a key role in leading the program to its first-ever Final Four appearance. From there, she became the head coach at Texas A&M, where she guided the team to a Sweet 16 appearance. That championship was particularly special, as it marked the first professional volleyball league national championship in America. She embodies everything it means to max out with an overall coaching record of 444-172. Bird emphasizes the foundational role of relationships, mental toughness, and authenticity in her coaching approach. She candidly shares the challenges she faced, particularly in navigating role acceptance within a professional league and the importance of strong administrative support. This year's 2024 NFL draft class has received more noise than recent years' pools of players, and it has mainly stemmed from one position- quarterback. Many teams are hoping to change the trajectory of their franchise in the first round, and the Chicago Bears are sitting in that top spot with one player a phone call away. Ryan, Channing and Fred sat down with the NFL's projected No. 1 overall pick, Caleb Williams to find out what it will be like for him to hear his name called first at next week's Draft in Detroit. The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner talks to The Pivot a few days before the life changing night, about what it will take for him to lead a team and how he has proven what it takes to win Lombardi Trophies. A knock many people had against Caleb was that he lacked adversity growing up. Caleb shuts down these assumptions and explains how each of his biggest pivots came from losses and failures. Whether it was falling short in crucial games growing up or starting on the bench at Oklahoma, Caleb has dedicated his life to never accepting losses again. Williams is built for the future of the game, and as Channing says he's “built in a lab,” Caleb has approached football from a business mindset as well. His parents taught Caleb to sit back and watch then learn and adapt, and on and off the football field Williams has found ways to only get better. The Bears trading away Justin Fields showed Caleb everything he needed to see, and the same way he changed the culture at Gonzaga High School and at USC he is hoping to revive Chicago football. He discusses with the guys how much he dreams of championships and the journey he's taken to making that a reality. Playing alongside Olu Fashanu in high school and against Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix in college has exposed Caleb to some of this year's best talent. Yet he explains to Ryan how his leadership and focus is seemingly unmatched amongst the other players. Before games Caleb tells himself he's already won, and he is already picturing his name being called out on April 25th. Caleb hopes to cultivate a new culture in Chicago, and he has the confidence to make it happen. External validation wasn't sustainable to begin with.Authentic is strong: Being a successful content creator or a successful model and actor in the competitive market of LA requires standing out. You can't stand out if you're a carbon copy of everyone else and trying to fit in. What Boston sports team won five national championships in the last six years? Hint: it wasn't the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics or Bruins. The answer: the Boston Renegades, a women's football team. While the local women's teams that have been winning championship after championship, they've received much less fanfare than their male counterparts at Fenway or Gillette Stadium. "Sports aren't inherently male, but in so many spaces we've come to accept them as such," said Rev. Laura Everett, author of the blog, Boston Women's Sports. "We have national and world champions playing locally, but they're not getting the coverage they deserve. Whereas so often women's sports teams are expected to prove that they're worthy, when the men's teams are just presumed that they are." But soccer fans may have reason to rejoice — a bid to bring a new national women's soccer team to Boston could materialize in coming years. Some experts hope it could be the catalyst for local women's teams to finally get the respect and higher profile they have earned. "It's exciting to think that women's pro soccer will be back, hopefully, in Boston and exciting because it's a sport and a league, the NWSL, that's really on the rise. It will be great to have Boston be part of that women's sports conversation nationally." GUESTS Shira Springer, sports journalist and lecturer in Managerial Communication at MIT Reverend Laura Everett, executive director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches, author of the blog, Boston Women's Sports

Leaders who know how to lead and change culture know culture eats strategy for breakfast. This concept figures strongly in Michael's book, Gridiron Genius. When most people watch football, they see the game, maybe the game plan and strategy. We see it on the scale of a play, maybe a game involving twenty-two men on a field, maybe also the coaches and trainers.Michael sees each play in the context of the game, season, and overall culture of football as it evolves over decades. He knows the key players, coaches, owners, past players, their careers, their relationships, and their families if relevant. To understand and change culture doesn't come from just telling people what to do. It means listening, understanding, testing, trying, failing, coming back, succeeding, relationships, and using tools like stories, beliefs, images, role models, not just carrots and sticks or instruction. To hear Michael talk football reveals levels of leadership and culture beyond what most of us ever see, honed through decades of living and loving the game and everything in it. I hope the application to sustainability is obvious. You'll hear in his sharing what fans miss when television hides the full game why I can't stand people thinking they're leading in sustainability by coercing, cajoling, convincing, or seeking compliance.Give everything you've got because you love it. Break past what you thought your potential was to new possibilities.Michael's podcast: The GM Shuffle with Michael Lombardi and Femi AbebefeHis book: GRIDIRON GENIUS A Master Class in Winning Championships and Building Dynasties in the NFL Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. #16. In 2004, I was tasked with building a football program at a brand new high school. It was my first experience working in a public school, and although I thought I had all the answers as a first-time head coach, I quickly learned that I was not as ready as I had originally thought. For the first couple of years, I did what “good” programs do - all learned from being a product of Catholic schools. We had some success with this blueprint, but I knew something was missing. So, in 2009 I evaluated my program, and concluded that a vital component was missing: we were only training our players to win football games. As I mentioned, my previous experience as a student, a teacher, and a coach was only at Catholic schools, which had very strong athletic programs. Although these Catholic schools wanted to win on the field, their ultimate mission was to prepare their students for life. Most of which was done through the lens of Catholicism, which obviously wasn't going to fly at my new public school. So, I had to turn to other resources. Being an English teacher at heart, I read everything I can get my hands, but one book in particular, provided that “aha” moment, The Winners Manual by Jim Tressel.Coach Tressel was the head football coach at Youngstown State and Ohio State. At the young age of 32, Coach Tressel was hired to turn around the football program at YSU, and he decided that he first needed to teach his players what winning meant - not only on the field, but more importantly in life. So in 1986 he created The Winners Manual that center around guiding his players to be able to answer this important question: “If the game of life ended tonight, would you be a winner?” Using The Winners Manual as his foundation, Coach Tressel won over 240 games, 5 national championships, and 7 conference titles in his 25-year head coaching career. More importantly, he helped his players be winners in life.Currently the President of Youngstown State University, Coach Tressel was kind enough to take time from his busy schedule to discuss:Where the idea of The Winners Manual came fromHow training his athletes to be winners in life translated to winning on the field as wellWhy it's important for coaches to separate what they do from who they areAnd as a special bonus, of course had to get Coach's thoughts on the CFP and the upcoming OSU/Michigan gameIn the Prologue, Coach Tressel states, “It is my sincere hope that this manual will be helpful in your pursuit of excellence; that it will provide important tools you need to succeed; that during difficult times when you feel like giving up, you will leaf through this book and find something refreshing or something that ignites a fire to keep you going” (Tressel XV). Well The Winners Manual has been just that for me and think it can be for you too.Review The "I" in Win on Apple Podcast or my website to let me know what you think of the show. #11. Shane Jacobs has arguably the most unique title in education: Principal/Head Football Coach. Given his unparalleled success on the field, Peabody High School (Trenton, TN) decided to promote Coach Jacobs first to AP, and most recently, Principal. On the gridiron, Coach Jacobs has won state titles in 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, and at the time of recording, had his team on a 43-game win streak. Coach Jacobs's philosophy is cemented on his belief that every teacher and coach has an obligation to treat each child as if he/she is their own. It is that culture that Coach Jacobs is now striving to infuse into the entire community of Peabody High School.Show Notes:Coach Jacobs on TwitterPeabody High SchoolMy Contact Info:The "I" in Win WebsiteLukeMertens44@gmail.comTwitter: @LukeMertensIG: LukeMertens44LinkedIn Profile
