In this episode, we talk with Dr Leslie Desrosiers, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and the creator of ACL STRONG. ACL Strong is a program that simplifies injury prevention training so that anybody can learn to protect their knees and avoid getting hurt. Over the 6 week program, ACL STRONG transforms athletes (skiers!) making us stronger in the right muscles, more aware of movements, and more resistant to knee, hip, and ankle problems.Dr Leslie shares her ski origin story, which started at age 7 in Dubuque, Iowa. Dr Leslie always knew she wanted to be a physical therapist, she went from graduate school into orthopedics private practice. Later she built her online program focused on ACL injury prevention. We were fascinated to learn that in a 4-6 week training program we can reduce our risk of injury by 50-67%! Dr Leslie has designed a program specifically for skiers called “Snow and Beyond” - that we are doing to get our bodies strong and ready for ski season! We want to keep skiing for as long as possible and do our best to keep up with our kids!Resources:Join us as we get ready for ski season with ACL Strong and use code SKIMOMS for 20% off your membership!Keep up with the Latest from Dr Leslie and ACL Strong!Website: https://aclstrong.com/Instagram: https:/MABEL'S LABELSUse Code SKIMOMS to save 15% off your order. We talk with Mardi Fuller, a backcountry adventurer, who lives in Boston where she works as a nonprofit communications director and volunteers with the local Outdoor Afro network. Mardi has appeared in Outside Magazine, the BBC, PBS and NPR. We talk about making the outdoors more accessible to everyone! Mardi grew up in New York in a Jamaican-American family. She tells us about her early ski experiences as a child and young adult with her church groups - which ended with a broken ankle. A few winters ago, Mardi explored winter adventuring and skiing. With the support and guidance from her friends in Boston, she's fallen in love with backcountry skiing (also known as skinning or ski touring). Mardi tells us about the alpine touring (AT) equipment she uses to get uphill and earn her turns. And Mardi's clear, she is enjoying moderate terrain and not outrunning avalanches. We were super impressed to hear that Mardi was the first black person to join the Appalachian Mountain Club Four Thousand Footer Club. Mardi passes along her love of the outdoors through a number of programs to that aim to make the outdoors more accessible.Resources:The Ski Monster Ski Shop (Boston)Appalachian Mountain ClubAMC 4K ClubInclusive Ski TouringOutdoor AfroMABEL'S LABELSUse Code SKIMOMS to save 15% off your order. In this episode, Sarah and Nicole introduce ourselves to new listeners that may not be familiar with the story that led us to starting this podcast. We became friends 12 years ago at a wonderful, little family mountain (Mohawk Mountain) in Cornwall, Connecticut. We've come a long way since our first (awkward) episode in 2021. We are very proud of our 75+ episodes and counting. We have interviewed ski moms from mountains big and small, from Olympians to first timers as adults. We started this podcast because we believe that ski moms are the unsung heroes that buy the gear, organize the equipment, start the crock pots and plan the ski trips. But we also want to make sure we are enjoying ourselves on the slopes and playing outside - both with and without the kiddos. And most importantly, we want to thank you for coming along on this journey with us. We hope to be your ski mom friends on your weekend trek to the mountains and helping you plan your next ski trip adventure. And we hope you have as much fun listening as we do making these episodes. In this episode, we talk with Kikkan Randall, ski mom, 5x Olympian, gold medalist and breast cancer survivor. Kikkan was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and both her parents were skiers. Kikkan was wearing ski boots and sliding down the hill before she could even walk. At age 3, Kikkan's family moved to Alaska where she first got involved with nordic/cross country skiing. Kikkan walks us through her progression from middle school nordic ski racing to her Olympic gold medal. At age 19, Kikkan and her coach mapped out her 10 year roadmap. Kikkan kept her head down, kept working hard and 16 years later she accomplished her lifelong goal of winning a gold medal. Kikkan tells us about taking time off from competing to start her family and later taking her son on the road as she ramped back up. Kikkan shares her breast cancer survival story which started shortly after she won her gold medal. Kikkan was conflicted about sharing her struggle publicly, but in the end she decided that getting support and talking about her journey would benefit her and other women. Kikkan has become an advocate for early detection and a supporter of numerous cancer research programs. In honor of Mother's Day, I wanted to examine the evolving demands of motherhood, and I could think of no better person to help me do that than Nicole Feliciano. For nearly two decades, Nicole has convened and supported mothers, initially through her wildly successful blog, MomTrends, then with her book Mom Boss: Balancing Entrepreneurship, Kids & Success, and most recently with Ski Moms Fun, which is a podcast and social media focusing on winter sports and motherhood. She and I discuss the changes she has seen and her advice for staying balanced. More information about Nicole, including links to her projects, is at TalkingAboutKids.com.
In this episode Nicole and Sarah revisit a favorite episode from season 1 with ski mom Heather Burke, Travel Editor at FamilySkiTrips.comThis time of year a lot of us are thinking about new equipment for the upcoming season, but navigating gear can be confusing. Heather talks to us about how to find the right skis and boots, skis designed for women, demo days - and much more. Heather learned to ski at 3, her mom says she was more natural skiing than walking! Heather grew up in the ski biz, her parents ran a ski lodge at Smugglers Notch in Vermont.Heather and her husband Greg have raised two skiers, and have skied over 225 ski resorts around the world. Heather launched FamilySkiTrips.com in 1995 as a resource for families on where to ski, the best ski resorts, and even how to pack and dress for skiing. In this episode Nicole and Sarah visit Hooey Wilks at her studio, Hooey Mountain. Hooey shows us her the vintage toy skier collection that she photographs on snow at ski resorts around the world. The photographs truly pulled us in, they are fun and engaging, and we found ourselves leaning in to get a closer look at all the details. The vintage toy skiers in Hooey's photographs evoke a nostalgic feeling, but are bright and modern at the same time. Hooey's photos brought us back to some of our favorite ski trips. Hooey's amazing photos would be a great gift for anyone who loves to ski. We could see these hanging in a ski house or any house with people who just love to ski and play in the snow. Hooey also shares stories about her own ski journey growing up skiing in NY state and Vermont with her friends and family. She is the founder of Momtrends.com where she writes articles and ski guides, clearly she is a skilled skier and passionate about the sport. She has two girls 16,13 who ski race for the Green Mountain Valley School in Vermont. She is the Admin of the Ski Moms Facebook Group, the Founder of Momtrends.com and co-host of the Ski Moms Fun podcast. Being a ski mom whose kids all started skiing by age of 2 and who now can out-ski their mom it is so fun to connect with other ski moms and I am grateful for the community she has created. Nicole Feliciano, welcome to Ordinary Sherpa. Key Takeaways Experiencing the mountains and the vastness of the ski experience in Montana was like seeing the ocean for the first time. She continued to design experiences with her husband and later with her daughters to find joy and embrace skiing as a part of who they are. Unlike many other sports, skiing requires embracing cold temperatures and your feet sliding beneath you instead of firmly planted. A life hack for couples and parents- if you want someone to enjoy something you enjoy, invest in lessons from someone else who is skilled in the sport or activity. Getting exposure to the elements was as important as building their skills. Participating in activities with a peer group helps build the skill and connection while also learning confidence and independence. As Nicole confessed “ski moms love the community nature of a small hill.” Skiing set the tone of family time. Unlike many sports, when her daughter is competing is ski races, she also is on skis and participating not watching passively on the sidelines. She is doing her thing, which also takes the pressure off the skiers which was a healthy environment for kids sports. Skiing is a lifetime sport with participants from 2-80+. It doesn't matter if there is a speed differential as you all meet up at different points along the way. Also when riding on the ski lift there is a confined time to connect with teens. Mom Trends was a way to grow and learn about everything from travel to baby strollers at a time in her life when she was curious and looking for ideas. It was never about parenting advice and she never made money off her kids. The content continues to grow with her and ski articles still attract considerable traffic. Ski Moms Fun both grew from a place of Nicole not seeing herself represented in the market and wanting to offer resources to other moms who were interested in skiing and looking for support An unexpected bright spot from the Ski Moms Fun was the community and peer connections that have developed to support other moms. What brings everyone together is the love for the outdoors. There are regularly examples of moms sharing ways to make skiing easier and more accessible to access. Be curious about winter. Finding an outdoor activity or sport that brings an appreciation for the change of seasons so when the season changes it's not the end of something, rather embrace the change with a sense of joy. As referenced in the conversation there are ways to make skiing accessible such as participating in various state passes, rental sharing agreements. Our family began skiing by volunteering to chaperone school ski trips and chaperones received a free lift ticket. Nicole referenced the states with ski programs to encourage and make skiing accessible.
