In this episode, Sarah and Nicole introduce ourselves to new listeners that may not be familiar with the story that led us to starting this podcast. We became friends 12 years ago at a wonderful, little family mountain (Mohawk Mountain) in Cornwall, Connecticut. We've come a long way since our first (awkward) episode in 2021. We are very proud of our 75+ episodes and counting.  We have interviewed ski moms from mountains big and small, from Olympians to first timers as adults. We started this podcast because we believe that ski moms are the unsung heroes that buy the gear, organize the equipment, start the crock pots and plan the ski trips. But we also want to make sure we are enjoying ourselves on the slopes and playing outside - both with and without the kiddos. And most importantly, we want to thank you for coming along on this journey with us. We hope to be your ski mom friends on your weekend trek to the mountains and helping you plan your next ski trip adventure.  And we hope you have as much fun listening as we do making these episodes. Send us an email and let us know what guests and topics you'd like to hear next! Sarah@skimomsfun.comNicole@skimomsfun.comGet 75% off tickets for family fun at Snowbound Expo! In this episode, we talk with Kikkan Randall, ski mom, 5x Olympian, gold medalist and breast cancer survivor. Kikkan was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and both her parents were skiers. Kikkan was wearing ski boots and sliding down the hill before she could even walk. At age 3, Kikkan's family moved to Alaska where she first got involved with nordic/cross country skiing. Kikkan walks us through her progression from middle school nordic ski racing to her Olympic gold medal.  At age 19, Kikkan and her coach mapped out her 10 year roadmap.  Kikkan kept her head down, kept working hard and 16 years later she accomplished her lifelong goal of winning a gold medal. Kikkan tells us about taking time off from competing to start her family and later taking her son on the road as she ramped back up. Kikkan shares her breast cancer survival story which started shortly after she won her gold medal. Kikkan was conflicted about sharing her struggle publicly, but in the end she decided that getting support and talking about her journey would benefit her and other women. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EAGxBoston 2022: Retrospective, published by Kaleem on July 14, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TLDR: We think EAGxBoston was a success. As the largest EAGx ever, the organizers, and CEA staff supporting them, learned lots of valuable lessons about how to plan large(er) EAGxs in the future. When asked “How likely is it that you would recommend EAGx to a friend or colleague with similar interests to your own?”, attendees gave a mean average response of 8.99, with 70.6% of attendees giving >=9/10. What is the purpose of this post? This post is a mixture of advice for future EAGx planners, feedback for the CEA events team from our EAGx planning team, a general recap/update about the success of the event for attendees and non-attendees, and hopefully a catalyst for comments about how we can improve EA conferences in the future. High-level facts and figures Date: 1st-3rd of April 2022 Location: Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Boston MA, USA. 1283 Applications --> 1005 accepted applications --> 950 registered attendees 44 Speakers 75 sessions of programming (talks, panels, speed friending, meetups, and office hours) 22 Orgs represented at the Career fair Things we could have done better: The main challenge with the planning and execution of EAGxBoston was the short timeline from inception to the weekend of the event, which was around 3 months. This led to organizers immediately needing to put in close to 1FTE planning the conference, vendors having to deal with accelerated timelines, and attendees and speakers having to deal with short timelines and often-delayed communication, both leading up to and during the event. Below is a truncated version of our much longer list which can be found in the full public document. Deciding a date for the conference We took a long time to decide a date for the conference, which caused a cascade of delays, because we couldn't lock-in any vendors, speakers, or attendees as a result. Securing a venue sooner Once we had decided on a conference date, we still took 2-3 weeks longer than needed deciding which of the venues which we'd secured to go with. Th Swapcard: Launching the Swapcard earlier (maybe a week earlier). Offer attendees a training on how to use Swapcard Have better training materials for organizers on how to use Swapcard (CEA now has this) Confirming the schedule earlier Organising hotel accommodation earlier and better Registration Add more info to badges Use barcode scanning at the registration desk to verify registration. We didn't have enough blank attendee/volunteer name badges. T-shirts Attendee T-shirt Size distribution wasn't good and meant that we didn't have the right sizes for everyone Volunteer T-shirt Volunteers didn't like how unwearable they'd be post-conference Size distribution wasn't good and meant that we didn't have the right sizes for everyone Have (a) volunteer(s) dealing with routine emails earlier We might have lost 25-50% of organizer time answering emails which required simple answers. Make sure that all food allergy labels were totally correct, crystal clear Strategy & goal setting When planning EAGxBoston, we knew that the majority of potential attendees would be US-based college students. We were relatively confident about this, given that we estimated ~1500 US-based students would have completed an EA intro or in-depth fellowship program in person or online since the last EA conference to happen in the US (2019). Given that we were hoping to have a 1000 person conference, where we'd hopefully have between 60%-75% of attendees being “new” or “inexperienced” EAs (vs 40%-25% “experienced” or mentors or content experts), we had the following goals for the conference: Major: To maximize the number of meaningful connections made, and interesting ideas heard, by attendees. Major: To make att...

Today we are delighted to be speaking to an amazing and inspiring leader in our industry, Dr. Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen! Dr. Debbie was chosen as the 2020 Most Inspirational Woman in Entertainment Middle East and the Female CEO of the Year.    In this episode, Dr. Debbie has a lot to share about mentorship, managing people, and the importance of building trust.  We hope you enjoy listening to today's conversation! Dr. Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen's bio: Dr. Debbie is an accomplished leader with more than 30 years of International experience in Venue Management, MICE Tourism, and Events & Entertainment industries. Dr. Debbie is a Leader with an extensive understanding of public, government, and private sector organizations with a proven track record of driving growth and successful business development. Dr. Debbie holds an Honorary Professional Doctorate in Global Leadership and Management from EIU, Paris, France. Her career started under the leadership of MICE Tourism Industry legends; Ray Bloom, Paul Flackett, and John Haynes in 1988 with Regent International Exhibitions and the launch of EIBTM Geneva, Switzerland. Following the sale of EIBTM to the world's largest Exhibition Organiser; Reed International Exhibitions, Dr. Debbie took on the role of Group Director of Sales; MICE Global Events until rejoining Ray Bloom in 2001 as Vice President Global Sales with the launch of IMEX Frankfurt, Germany. In 2005, she moved to the Middle East to help establish the Bahrain Exhibition & Convention Authority, and later assuming the roles of Acting CEO and Deputy CEO for the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre, she then went on to become the CEO of events@bahrain, a company established under the Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company. How Dr. Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen got into the industry Dr. Debbie dreamed of joining the Royal Air Force and becoming an air traffic controller. Unfortunately, there were no opportunities for women when she applied, so she got a job with an exhibition company. She started as an Organizing Executive for what was EIBTM at the time, under the guidance of Ray Bloom, Paul Flackett, and John Haynes, all of whom ended up having a profound impact on her life and career. She initially thought she would only do the job for a few months and did not realize it would become her career.  A beautiful journey The MICE industry got into her soul, and she loved every minute of it! It was a beautiful journey in the exhibition world, the events world, and the MICE Tourism world. She got lots of support and many opportunities to grow within the industry. Dr. Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen's defining moment Dr. Debbie was very nervous when she did her first presentation. Paul Flackett advised her to focus on something at the back of the room rather than looking at anybody. Even though she could hear her voice trembling, nobody noticed, and she quickly began to gain more confidence and get into the flow. That was a defining moment for her, and things went very well from there. Mentors Mentors tend to see things in you that you do not see in yourself. It helps to have someone to champion you and give you the motivation, encouragement, and confidence that you need.  Opportunities Dr. Debbie's husband has been very supportive since the day they met. He always advised her to take the opportunities that came her way in life. He said that if an opportunity did not work out, it would be better than having regrets and wondering what would have happened if she had taken that role. Trust A lot of trust was placed in Dr. Debbie when she was allowed to run the Exhibition Center in Bahrain. She reported to the Minister of Industry and Commerce. He was a very supportive and inspiring man, and she learned a lot from him. Take chances You have to be prepared to take chances in life without being afraid of things not going your way. If you spend too much time thinking about something, you might not do it. Take the bull by the horns, be passionate, and put your heart into what you are doing. If it does not work out, pick yourself up and move on. Movie theatres in the Middle East When she was in her forties, Dr. Debbie was offered the opportunity to be the CEO of Novo Cinemas, a chain of movie theatres in the Middle East. Although the processes were similar to those in the MICE industry and the senior management team was very experienced in the cinema industry, she knew nothing about entertainment. So she had to learn from the management team and earn their trust and respect very fast. She gave herself six months and put her all into doing it. As a result, they have become a very close-knit and successful team. Gaining trust and building culture Dr. Debbie engaged with every team member regularly, listened to them, and gave them a voice. She wanted to know about all the things that worked and did not work, what they were happy about, and what they wanted to achieve. She listened carefully, took their feedback seriously, and showed them that they mattered and she cared about them. She also sat with the HR team to develop a career plan for every team member. Every time I do this show, I'm always hoping that people will get to see an honest depiction of the road toward a vision. It requires massive growth internally and massive contribution and activity. On this episode of Vision Builders, we get to take a look at the journey in a way that I hope will encourage many of you to know that you're not alone. As the 20 plus year dream of a Funk Music Hall of fame hits critical mass. We sit down and have a discussion with the Chief steward of that vision. David Webb is a community leader, a visionary, a musician, a dad and the Founder of The Funk Music Hall of Fame and Exhibition Center, or the Funk Center for Short. He's our guest and I hope you'll take a minute to learn and maybe become a positive participant in wonderful history as it unfolds! https://www.thefunkcenter.org/

Show #450   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 21st April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER SARI KANGASOJA. Hi Sari!!   TESLA TAKES SHORT SELLER TO COURT, SAYING HE MENACED ITS WORKERS "Elon Musk’s war with Tesla Inc. short sellers just got weirder. The electric carmaker claims a California man who it says is part of an online group of short sellers has been stalking its Fremont factory and harassing its employees -- including dangerously swerving his car toward a Tesla Model 3 that was on a freeway test drive and injuring a Tesla security guard in a hit-and-run on company property." reports Bloomberg: "Tesla persuaded a state court judge on Friday to issue a temporary restraining order requiring the man to stay at least 100 yards away from its factory and employees."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-21/tesla-takes-short-seller-to-court-saying-he-menaced-its-workers   TESLA PUTS NEW MODEL 3 INVENTORY ONLINE FOR BROWSING AND ‘IMMEDIATE’ DELIVERY "Instead of picking options and waiting a few weeks for delivery of a custom-configured Tesla, buyers can now browse Tesla’s inventory of new Model 3s online and find cars available for immediate delivery (within a few days)." says Electrek today: "Until today, this was only available for Model S and X. There still aren’t any used cars listed for Model 3, but Tesla’s new inventory is accessible for anyone to browse online. Also cars are only appearing in some geos like California."   https://electrek.co/2019/04/20/tesla-model-3-new-inventory-immediate-delivery/   BYD DEBUTS E-SEED GT CONCEPT, SONG PRO AND E SERIES AT AUTO SHANGHAI At the Auto Shanghai 2019, BYD has unveiled its E-SEED GT concept car and Song Pro SUV alongside its all-new e-series models on April 16 at the 18th International Automobile Industry Exhibition. The company also showcased its latest Dynasty series of vehicles, which were recently unveiled at the company’s spring product launch in Beijing. A total of 23 new car models were exhibited at the event, held at Shanghai’s National Convention and Exhibition Center, fully demonstrating the BYD New Architecture (BNA) design, the 3rd generation of Dual Mode technology, plus the world-leading e-platform framework.   IN MARCH 2019 JAGUAR SOLD OVER 2,000 I-PACE "Jaguar I-PACE sales reported by the manufacturer increased in March to a near-record level of 2,044, which turns out to be 8.4% of total volume for the brand globally." according to InsideEVs.com: "Hopefully, the output will continue to increase or at least stay above 2,000 per month."   https://insideevs.com/march-2019-jaguar-sold-2000-i-pace/   THIS CLASSIC FORD BRONCO IS FULLY ELECTRIC AND TO DIE FOR "Zero Labs Automotive is showing off its plan to build an electric version of the original Ford Bronco. More than just slapping an electric motor under the hood and pushing them out the door, this project also gives the off-roader modern luxury with things like real wood interior panels and digital instruments. The company plans to build an initial run of 150 of them and reservations are open now." writes Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Zero Labs Automotive Bronco electric restomod has a claimed 360-horsepower (269-kilowatt) output. A 70-kilowatt-hour battery allows for a 190-mile (306-kilometer) range. The motor runs through a five-speed manual transmission, which seems like an odd choice considering most electric vehicles use just a single speed.   https://www.motor1.com/news/345513/ford-bronco-ev-conversion/   ALEXANDER FRANK Yes, I’d love my Model 3 making money for me while I’m not using it, which is actually most of the week while I’m working (Monday – Friday). I can’t park at my work, that’s why I’m taking my electric scooter or my  Renault Twizy (or soon VanMoof electric bike). I’d only add it to the Tesla Network after I’d feel comfortable watching Netflix while being driven by the car though. I love the cabin facing camera, gives me some ease. My day would then look like this: I’d unplug my Tesla Model 3 from my 11kw home charger, it’d drive me to work while I listen to your podcasts, once in the city at my work there’s no need to park, it would go about earning money. An hour or so before I want to leave work I’d press a button on the app and the car would wait for me outside to take me back home. LOVE IT!   RAJEEV NARAYAN I may not be ready to use my primary EV as an automated taxi, as if something happened to it I would be without a car. If, however when it came time to buy a new EV, I would be wiling to get the old one be an automated taxi, instead of simply trading it in. I imagine a future where a network of privately and company owned EVs run by Uber, Lyft or even Tesla act as automated Taxis, and the ride sharing company pays you a fee to use your car. This would allow the owner to make a little extra income, while reducing capital costs to the taxi company.   JOHN FRUHWIRTH No, I will not hire my Tesla out. It is my dream car, I am emotionally attached to it and can't see myself treating it as a utility vehicle to make money for me.   MARK RICHARDS I park in a garage, so it isn’t practical to make my car available in a car share network.  I don’t live in a city, in fact I am on the very edge of “civilization”, so I don’t think there would be much demand out here.   Robyn Edwards Perth Western Australia NO..  I am receiving my Kona in 2.5 hours.... I will feel edgy if my partner drives it! A complete stranger? Never. I share pool vehicles at work, I see how they are treated and that is a closed group!   KARL CRAMER I once drove for a ride sharing service and people would do disrespectful things to my car while I was still in it driving them, like leaving garbage or scratching at the roof fabric. I can't imagine what jerks would do if there was no one. I'll definitely use the service but I'm not going to sacrifice MY car to the horde.   NEIL I don't think I would let my car be used, not because I would worry about it,but because I would worry about how it got charged. With a model 3 I would use about 40% of the battery for the daily commute. With another 40% for saving the battery life and cold weather allowance that would only leave 20% for that taxi service. I would want to see automatic charging stations like the Tesla snake they showed a few years ago before I would think of reconsidering.   ASHLEY HILL depending on the options I'm considering it though is a few other things that make it easily worthwhile; like if was part of a Co-Operative (say a US$2000 deposit buy in) and if someone did cause troubles with it fleet would be large enough that I would have access to another one while fixes got underway. Would also do if remote operation instead of full self driving was on the table for same deal; would let someone remote drive it to another driver similar to current car next door /car share service; especially if the Tesla implemented an always on "near-impossible to crash" feature.     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…   What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard about EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 216 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.
