Happy Satiated Saturday! Many of you may know that touch has been linked to the release of oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone related to reproduction, social bonding, stress regulation, and promotes feelings of love, trust, attachment, intimacy, and calm. Ya know what else stimulates the release of oxytocin? Eating. Research studies have found that an increase in oxytocin can decrease the urge to eat. So you can imagine that if you're lacking safe touch in your life and touch has felt invasive, where you stay away from touch, that your body needed to find another way to receive the oxytocin that it desires to feel calm and connected. It found a way to do that through food. This is another example of why food is not just about the food. We can continue to be curious about what food is doing for your body.In this week's episode, I chat with Dr. Njideka Olatunde, author, Master Reflexologist, Pain Relief Educator, and founder of Focus On Healing Wellness Institute about: The power of touch and re-defining what touch isUnderstanding the connection between stress and painRefloxologyDaily touch practicesThe importance of play and funI also sprinkle in the connection between touch and your food behaviorsYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/touch-for-healing-pain-and-decreasing-cravingsWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Dr. Olatunde here: Website: https://focusonhealing.com/LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/njidekanolatunde Instagram: www.instagram.com/evolving_butterfly YouTube: www.youtube.com/@changingliveswithtouchology Podcast: www.touchologywellnessexperience.comSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

Happy Satiated Saturday! It can be confusing what path to choose for your food recovery when there are many different paths you can walk. When exploring all the various avenues, you can focus on your experience of choice. There is no "right" way to decrease your food coping mechanisms. It gets to be unique to you, your body, and what supports you in feeling the way you want to feel in your life. Your recovery resources are your choice (something that the experience of trauma can feel like it took away from you). When trying out any somatic, nervous system, trauma, parts practices, you can observe how you feel before, during, and after to discover which practices resonate with you. You will receive this bodily feedback by tracking your capacity to flow through dysregulation, big emotions and sensations, and what helps you to return to yourself again and again. In this week's episode, I chat with Caroline McNally, Hypnotherapist & Longevity Coach, about: Hypnotherapy resources you can use on yourself to navigate food urges and impulsesUtilizing visualization for navigating your relationship with foodThe importance of laughter on this healing journey Reminding yourself that you have a choiceYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/food-cravings-with-self-hypnosis-resources6 more days to sign up for the Somatic Eating® Program! Happy Satiated Saturday! What if diet culture wasn't actually the "problem"? Focusing on diet culture can become a distraction. It keeps the conversation circling around the same point—being controlled around our food choices is the problem, and we need to regain our experience of choice with food. Yet, when all of our attention stays on food, we miss out on exploring the deeper layers of who we are, beyond what we eat. Staying locked in a battle with diet culture can distract us from stepping into our power. Why do the villains always get the best songs? In this devilishly fun episode of The Music in Me, we're cranking up the drama and diving headfirst into the world of Disney villain anthems. These songs aren't just catchy — they're iconic, theatrical, and dripping with delicious wickedness. From the seductive power plays of Ursula in Poor Unfortunate Souls, to Scar's fascist flair in Be Prepared, to the fiery torment of Frollo in Hellfire, Disney villains don't just monologue — they perform. We'll break down the lyrics, the drama, the hidden genius, and why these tunes secretly (or not-so-secretly) steal the spotlight every time. Send me a Text Message about the show!Daria Burke is an American writer, speaker, and wellbeing advocate. Daria largely raised herself in Detroit, tiptoeing around the mood swings of a drug-addicted mother, often without running water at home. She became a model student, hiding any evidence of struggle.and determined to leave Detroit and her past behind. She sped up the corporate ladder at the biggest beauty brands, rising to the C-Suite level. She was the picture of success. And then, on the night of her 35th birthday, her past came calling. One minute, she was laughing over wine; the next, she was curled up in the fetal position. All she could think about was her mom, passing a crack pipe, and her grandmother, ripped from her in a car accident. She embarked on a FOUR-YEAR deep dive into how the brain and body work. Happy Satiated Saturday! Intuition has been fascinating for me. I first started getting into the mind-body connection through practicing and learning about yoga and yoga philosophy. In yoga classes, I would often hear teachers talking about trusting your intuition. To be guided by your intuition. But, what I rarely heard was descriptions of how do you know something is intuition. Is what you're feeling intuition or fear? The more I learned about somatic work, the more I started to question the experience of intuition and where it comes from. When I finally discovered that intuitive processes are correlated with the activation of a part of the prefrontal cortex, called the orbitofrontal cortex, and that this part of your brain is diminished in activity after experience childhood trauma, I began to piece together that intuition is not something that everyone may easily be able to tap into based on their history. In this week's episode, I chat with Katie Beecher, Licensed Professional Counselor and Medical and Emotional Intuitive, about: The difference between intuition and fearPractices to strengthen your intuitionThe healing power of movement and artEmbracing your sensitivitiesImportant factors to include in your food recovery journeyYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/discover-your-inner-wisdomWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Katie: Website: https://katiebeecher.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/katiebeecher_medical_intuitive/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/beechermedicalintuitiveSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

Happy Satiated Saturday! How do you currently view symptoms or impulses in your body? Are they something to be fixed? Are they wrong or bad? Are you afraid of them when they increase? If you said yes to these questions, you might notice how does it feel in your body to view the body's symptoms and impulses as wrong, bad, fearful, and need of fixing? Something I've been teaching for a while is that your food coping mechanisms are not a problem. Often, what needs to be updated is how you respond to your body when it is sending you communication through a symptom or urge. What if you started to invite that reaction to the table and make it alright that this is what you're experiencing? In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Ali Damron, Hormone Expert, Licensed Acupuncturist, and Certified Personal Trainer, about: Understanding neuroplastic painThe complexity of emotions in healingUpdating your relationship to stressUpdating your body's storyUnderstanding the role of fear in physical symptomsEmbracing discomfortAnxiety as a messenger of informationThe importance of naming your feelings and emotional check-insYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here. Send me a Text Message about the show!Nicole Graev Lipson is the author of Mothers and Other Fictional Characters, which is a memoir written in essay form. Each essay in the book provides insight into her experience inl the many roles that she, and other women often feel pressure to play. With a goal of going beyond the ready made stories of womanhood, she has managed to provide a very revealing and affirming picture of the woman she has become today-as well as who she is still becoming. I was particularly drawn to her essay about her IVF journey, "Very Nice Blastocysts," which is all about her struggle to determine what to do with her three frozen embryos left over from a successful round of IVF. I invited Nicole on to have one of my favorite types of conversations, a both/and one. To talk about her views on life, how her experience has impacted those views, and why it's important to have these conversations with each other. Happy Satiated Saturday! While trauma-based food coping mechanisms, like binge eating, can feel dramatic, healing can sometimes (not always) be incredibly boring. Decreasing food patterns can look like simple acts of body care, like:Eating consistent, balanced mealsMoving your body in nourishing waysTaking time to breathe and enjoy a momentFostering a validating inner dialogue Finding ways to laugh and have fun These are the non-sexy, simple, not marketable ways of what it can look like to take care of your body and reconnect with yourself. Happy Satiated Saturday! I have one published article in a journal titled, The Enteric Nervous System and Body Psychotherapy: Cultivating a Relationship with the Gut Brain.I have a fascination and curiosity about the gut. The gut contains about 100 trillion bacteria that contribute to your mood, mental health, immune system, cravings, and nervous system. Some studies have found that there are some missing microbes in the guts of people who are struggling with binge eating, which provides another example of how binge eating is not your fault but a response to what is happening inside your body. About 95% of serotonin is made in your gut, making it a part of your experience of joy and happiness. You can imagine that if your gut bacteria are out of balance, you may feel inexplicably sad, leading you to reach for food to feel better. In this week's episode, I chat with Martha Carlin, microbiome researcher, founder of The BioCollective, and speaker about: The importance of understanding the microbiomeThe connection between Parkinson's and gut healthThe impact of food and stress on the gut and mental healthWhere gut research may be heading with probiotics, fecal transplants, and nutrition You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/understanding-your-gut-and-its-role-in-your-mood-and-cravingsWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Martha:Website: https://www.thebiocollective.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-biocollective/BiotiQuest: https://biotiquest.com/products/sugar-shiftSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

Happy Satiated Saturday! When I started to learn about the mind-body connection through yoga, I dove deep into all things yoga. I became a bit of a yoga fanatic and that led me to learn about Ayurveda, which is yoga's sister science. Ayurveda is a whole-body system of medicine. Rather than seeing symptoms as problems to be fixed, Ayurveda approaches symptoms as imbalances that can be brought into balance with foods, movements, and self-care routines. Ayurveda gave me a new lens to see my body through. I got to experience the exquisite wisdom in my body. I learned that food can be an ally helping to bring me into balance rather than what diet culture taught me was that food was something to be controlled and to eat as little of it as possible. Send me a Text Message about the show!I'm a little late to highlight rare disease month. Technically, the month of February traditionally is Rare Disease awareness month with Rare Disease Day falling on February 28th. But, sadly, as is happening with so many awareness months and days in the US, the FDA/NIH planned 2 day meeting focused on Rare Disease Day on 2/27 and 2/28 was cancelled this year. So, I guess I'm not too late after all, and instead I'm declaring today, the day you are listening to this podcast to be Rare Disease Day. A day to raise awareness for the 300 million people world wide living with a rare disease. A rare disease is when a disease affects fewer than 1 in 2000 people. And that rareness causes significant challenges. A lack of scientific knowledge and study about these diseases can make diagnosis more difficult. Many people with a rare disease spend a long time being misdiagnosed and therefore unable to access the types of treatments or support best suited for their actual disease. Funding for research can be harder to find when you are studying a disease that impacts a smaller proportion of the population. And yet, that smaller proportion does not make the difficulty of living with a rare disease any easier. So awareness is incredibly important, to bring attention to those with rare disease, to create support and community, and to encourage research. And today, I have two women as my guests on the show that are living with a rare disease.Avery Roberts resides in New York, and is a wearer of many hats — an advocate, dancer, foodie, and avid traveler. She was the first wheelchair user to perform on the great stage of the world-renowned Radio City Musical Hall in New York City, as well as, separately, among the first few wheelchair users to feature in a nationally televised live production, where she appeared as a dancer.Kelly Berger resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is a passionate advocate for rare disease, winning a 2024 RareVoice Award. She adores live music and is always attending a concert, typically driving states away to see her favorites. Kelly utilizes her adapted mobility van as her means of independence fueling her thirst for constant travel adventures—she's explored over 40 states and counting. They both have Congenital Muscular Dystrophy or CMD for short and they both were recently on Capitol Hill lobbying for Rare disease the last week in February. We talk about rare disease, the challenges facing those in the disability community, and the importance of having a seat at the table.Resources mentioned in this episode:Rare Disease AwarenessCongenital Muscular DystrophyAll Wheels UpSupport the showKeep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/westatpod/Threads: https://www.threads.net/@westatpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/westatpod/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/westatpod/Twitter: https://x.com/WeSTATpodHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show! Happy Satiated Saturday! Have you ever noticed that the strongest memories are the ones where you felt the most presence and embodiment? I will never forget my first yoga class because when I was shaking while holding a plank, I couldn't be anywhere else but in my body. At the beginning of your eating recovery, you may feel disconnected and dissociated. Your body has felt like an unsafe place to inhabit. Food has served as a wise strategy to create distance from your body or a micro-moment of feeling alive. Creating safety with food is less about food and more about expanding your capacity to be in your body while you eat, feel, and live. Embodiment is often the missing piece in healing your food coping mechanisms. Send me a Text Message about the show! The broken rung: a phenomenon even more pervasive than the glass ceiling in holding women back from career success. Women around the world do extremely well when it comes to their education. They graduate at higher rates than men do and have higher average GPAs. But then a strange thing happens: Upon entering the workforce, they immediately lose their advantage. When the first promotions come around, the slide continues—for every 100 men who are promoted to manager, only 81 women get promoted. Women risk falling behind far before they are even tapping the “glass ceiling”.So, what should we do about that? Especially in a climate where talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion has become the third rail of business development?McKinsey senior partners Kweilin Ellingrud, Lareina Yee, and María del Mar Martínez have written a new book, THE BROKEN RUNG: When the Career Ladder Breaks for Women--and How They Can Succeed in Spite of It. The book is based on over a decade of McKinsey research, conversations with more than 50 remarkable leaders, and their own experiences as senior partners working with companies and women leaders. Buy the bookKweilin Ellingrud is McKinsey's Chief Diversity Officer and a director of the McKinsey Global Institute, based in Minneapolis. As a senior partner at McKinsey, she has led research on the topics of gender equality, racial equity, generative AI, the future of work, and global competitiveness. She also serves clients in financial services across strategy and operational transformations.Support the showKeep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/westatpod/Threads: https://www.threads.net/@westatpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/westatpod/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/westatpod/Twitter: https://x.com/WeSTATpodHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show! Happy Satiated Saturday! Proprioception is your body's ability to sense movement and know where you are in space. When you've experienced past trauma, you dissociate from your body out of protection. This can decrease your proprioceptive awareness where food comes in to experience movement, embodiment, and have a moment of presence to feel where you are right here and now. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Dr. Satya Sardonicus, a leading expert in fascia and nervous system healing and the creator of NeuroFascial Flow, about: What is proprioception and fasciaHow low proprioception and rigidity in your fascial system can lead to increased stressProprioceptive and fascial exercises you can engage in that can help you to navigate food urgesWhat somatic and nervous system practices could be making things worse and dysregulating youYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/the-power-of-proprioceptive-practicesHope you enjoy this episode and see you all next week! With Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Satya:Website: https://drsatyawellness.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsatyawellness/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drsatyawellnessSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

Send me a Text Message about the show!I like talking about uncomfortable things. It's why I have this podcast-so that I have a space to be able to explore topics that might make some people feel uncomfortable, but are typically things we should be talking about more often. Today is no different.Today I want to talk about death. This isn't the first time I've covered this topic. In fact, WAY back in 2020-even before the world shut down in a pandemic-I talked about death with three other incredible women. Here is a link to that episode, it's great!2020 Death EpisodeSo it should come as no surprise that I jumped at the opportunity to interview my guest today.Rupert Callender has been a self taught, self proclaimed “radical” undertaker for the past 25 years, bringing unlikely influences such as acid house, crop circles and the counterculture on what remains an extremely patriarchal and increasingly corporate industry. His stripped back immersive approach has led to him being declared “the best undertaker of all time, by a country mile” by The Good Funeral Guide. His company, The Green Funeral company is in the UK and his memoir, “What Remains? Life death and the human art of undertaking” has been optioned by Working Title to turn into a TV drama.https://www.thegreenfuneralcompany.co.uk/Support the showKeep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/westatpod/Threads: https://www.threads.net/@westatpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/westatpod/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/westatpod/Twitter: https://x.com/WeSTATpodHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show! Happy Satiated Saturday! In April of 2022, I went to Disney World with my family and came back with covid. It was, unfortunately, the Delta strain that left me with long covid. I had to use an oxygen concentrator while I slept for about a year while my lungs healed through nebulized steroids and inhalers. I also had the lovely long covid symptom of losing my ability to swallow where I was on an all-liquid way of eating for almost two years. It's been quite a journey! While there are a few long covid symptoms I still navigate, I am now able to chew and swallow foods again, can sleep soundly, and generally feel much more grounded and stable in my body.Along the way, I learned so much about how the body works and that food behaviors are multi-faceted and influenced by many different internal factors. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Lily Spechler, Long Covid Registered Dietician, about: Our own long covid healing journeysWhat can happen in the body after getting long covidNavigating histamine, mcas, dysautonomia issuesHow food and supplements can play a role in increasing or decreasing bodily symptomsThe non-food reasons you may overeat or gain or lose weightAnd a lot more!Even if you don't have long covid there are so many gems in this episode to take away. Send me a Text Message about the show!Time to do an update on how things are going in the Department of Education now that we are 623 days into the Trump administration. Wait, no…..I'm being told it has actually been 27 days. I'm sorry. So when I last spoke about the Dept of Education, it was November 18th and I was reacting to the release of then President elect Trump's 10 point education plan.I did an overview on the history of the Department of Education and an overview of the programs in which the Department oversees. I would encourage you, if you haven't already, to listen to that episode first as I will be jumping into a lot more detail and specifics about the Department of Education in this episode. You can listen to that episode hereAnd now we know what the reality is of this administration's plan. As President Trump said in a press conference from the Oval office on February 13th, “I'd like to close the department of education immediately”. Although his nominee for Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon is still going through her confirmation hearing, she has echoed this goal, although perhaps on a slightly slower timeline than the President has said. Today I want to try my best to articulate what these proposed changes will mean in practice in as plain and clear language as I can.
