City Cast contributor Natalie Bencivenga joins host Megan Harris to talk about the winners and losers, what a few of those victories may tell us about what's coming in November, and why we should be paying attention to all those write-ins, even if we never get a full or complete accounting of everything they said. We always cite our sources: Allegheny County election results SpotlightPA has great info on the candidates for attorney general. More than 60,000 voters statewide chose the write-in option in the Democratic presidential primary, but we may not get a complete count of how many people voted “uncommitted” because of the way Philadelphia tallies write-ins. It's the Friday news roundup! Can you believe it's been four years since the pandemic started? Local journalist and host of KDKA Radio's Saturday show Natalie Bencivenga joins host Megan Harris and newsletter editor Francesca Dabecco to take stock of our recovery and the state of family leave in Pittsburgh. Plus, are you going to a show at Star Lake this summer? We're sharing pavilion parking woes and a wacky new way to get to Burgettstown! Help us with an upcoming show! What's your favorite cocktail? Is it on the menu somewhere or do you ask for something special? Or maybe you have a favorite cocktail bar? What do you love about it? Call or text us with your love letters to 412-212-8893. If you include your name and neighborhood, you might just hear it on the show! We always cite our sources: Check out photos from 1993's “storm of the century” in Pittsburgh Magazine. It's the anniversary of the shutdown in Pittsburgh, but the pandemic isn't really over. The Allegheny County Health Department shows about 1,600 current coronavirus cases, and the New York Times is tracking about 100 area hospitalizations.  Paid family leave is money you receive from your employer, an insurer, or the government while you are away from work for an extended period of time so you can take care of a seriously ill family member or bond with your newborn or newly adopted child. It's different from paid time off like sick pay. There's legislation in PA called the “Family Care Act,” which aims to provide essential support for families caring for loved ones and alleviates financial burdens. You can sign a support letter at FamilyCareAct.com. The Burgh Bus wants to take the hassle and headache out of your summer concert going experience. Wall Street BANNED? Democrats Look To BLOCK Investors From Housing Market

Two bills proposed by Democrats in Congress this week aim to curb home ownership by big investors in an attempt to improve buying conditions for Americans, the New York Times reported. In the Senate, the End Hedge Fund Control of American Homes Act of 2023 would force big investors to sell off all the single-family homes they own over a period of 10 years, and eventually ban hedge funds from owning any single-family homes entirely. "The housing in our neighborhoods should be homes for people, not profit centers for Wall Street," co-author of the bill, Senator Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., said in a press release. "Yet, in every corner of the country, giant financial corporations are buying up housing and driving up both rents and home prices. It's time for Congress to put in place commonsense guardrails that ensure all families have a fair chance to buy or rent a decent home in their community at a price they can afford." *** I'm joined by my guest Natalie Bencivenga to discuss why this is welcomed news, but also to discuss why this isn't enough. We also touch on how this issue connects to the 2024 election Related article: https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-affordability-investors-hedge-funds-wall-street-democrats-bill-2023-12 Follow Natalie Bencivenga: TIK TOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@nataliebencivenga INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/nataliebencivenga/ Follow - Independent Thought: INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/independentthought/?hl=en PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/Independentthought YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7ccPtminOAZ-z0Anpq2M_w --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/indethought/support

Senate Dress Codes, Hellbender License Plates & Airport Auction Finds

It's the Friday news roundup! Lawmakers in Washington have been up in arms — about the possibility of a shutdown, yes — but also the state of John Fetterman's shorts; Pennsylvania's favorite amphibian, the snot otter, is getting some official state love on local cars; and if you've ever wanted to buy 100 single air pods, the county airport auction is just for you.  We're lucky to have socially conscious journalist and media consultant Natalie Bencivenga on mic today. She's also the newest City Cast contributor! Welcome, Natalie! You can hear her very own show every Saturday at 2 p.m. on KDKA-AM. We love to cite our sources! Lawmakers voted to create an official dress code last week, aimed primarily at Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman, who regularly wears hoodies and gym shorts to the U.S. Senate floor.  Forty-six Republican senators (all but three) sent a letter to Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer demanding he reverse the change. Politico reported the code was dubbed the SHORTS Act, or “Show Our Respect To the Senate.” During shutdowns, federal employees can't get paid. The Trib's Ryan Deto reported there are about 19,000 federal employees in the Pgh region, and WHYY found 1.9 million Pennsylvanians would lose access to SNAP benefits. Fetterman's online store is now doing pre-orders for “I vote in this hoodie” apparel, printed by Commonwealth Press. Note: Proceeds go to his campaign, so only buy it if you want to support his cause. The state just released its new specialty license plate options, and the newest includes the eastern hellbender, Pennsylvania's official state amphibian. If you want to know more about how vanity and other special license plates work in Pennsylvania, we did a crossover podcast with City Cast Philly about them awhile back. It's so fun — it takes $85 to apply for one, and there are a LOT of ways and reasons the state can deny you. Highly recommend! This is the weekend for the county's annual airport auction. The full list of sale items includes a ton of cars, electronics, and even designer items like bags and coats. Pittsburgh Magazine shared some additional history on finds of previous years. If you're heading to Fall Fest on Bigham Street, check out other Mount Washington recommendations in newsletter editor Francesca Dabecco's neighborhood guide. John and Rachael recap some of their fav guests and moments of the 2019 YaJagoff Podcast episodes. 5:10  We met the PG's “Munch,” Dan Gigler at Carmella's in the south side.  He recapped the amazing story of Carmella's Haitian chef's amazing Pittsburgh life. 10:32     Our dear friend Scott Tady told us some fun Beaver County stories and made us less fearful of leaving Allegheny County.  And which major music artist was he disappointed in? 15:32     One of Rachael's faves, Pete Hewlett ends up in the greenroom with us and the first band to open at the Roxian New Mastersounds......he totally takes over and they end up smitten with him. 25:31   Rick “The Morning Walk Pic Guy” Dayton from KDKA-TV joined us behind the scenes of Hometown HIQ and made us all feel dumb! 32:34    The legendary Sean McDowell graced us at a Porch Tour stop with KDKA-TV meteorolgist, Ray Petelin.  Are the really just common Pittsburghers?? 37:09    Natalie Bencivenga is a modern-day Katherine Hepburn with grace and skill according to Rachael. She stopped by Rach's 100th episode along with other faves like Russell Howard and Paul and Shelly. 39:44     Our PTL ladies finally caved and let us invade their porch!  Jill and Marie—the duo who make PTL a hit let us bring the podcast to them and find out what some cues mean and how to tame some nervy guests.  45:29     The Duffy Women are amazing.  They are cut-throat and sharp-witted and loving all at the same time and they make you feel like you are home at the dinner table with your own crazy family while drinking wine of course! 48:06     A reflection podcast would not be complete without John's absolute fave Greg Brown who hangs out with Handy Andy Amrheing to talk Pirates, toilets, Christmas lights and selling houses to the new Pirates' manager.  While this podcast is only a few weeks old, any time is a good time to talk about Greg!
