The Nats lost 5-2 in the Atlanta series finale on Thursday afternoon. Al Galdi hosts solo and begins with a wide angle lens look at CJ Abrams' future, as it is growing more appropriate to talk about Washington signing him to an extension ahead of his Free Agency after the 2028 season. Abrams homered in the 8th inning, his second dinger this week, and his average currently sits at .317.(11:35) Trevor Williams only lasted 4.1 IP and fell apart once he faced the Braves lineup for a 3rd time. Williams' ERA is now up to 5.91 and it is fair to wonder if he should flip places with Brad Lord in the bullpen.(14:40) Davey Martinez explains why Jose Tena got the start at 3B while Amed Rosario was at 2B. Luis Garcia Jr. has been out all week after just having a child.(18:00) Al reads an email from an exasperated fan, who is asking for a purge of veterans that are not playing well.(23:00) Jim Callis, senior writer MLB Pipeline, gives Nats Chat an exclusive look at who the Nationals might pick at #1 overall in July's Draft. **** (This is a replay from earlier this month)
The Nats opened the doubleheader vs. Cleveland with their 3rd straight win, but that momentum was halted just a few hours later. Mark & Al reluctantly begin again with the bullpen, who overall had an awful Tuesday at the ballpark. They inherited a 6-2 lead in Game 1, but the Guardians immediately scored six runs in the top of the 7th. The offense bailed them out and then Kyle Finnegan notched his 100th career save.(7:10) The Nationals were trailing when Brad Lord departed Game 2, but the 'pen still managed to give up five runs in only three innings of work. Lucas Sims allowed three runs and his ERA is now up to 12.34.(14:30) Jake Irvin continued his season long trend of having his roughest inning in the top of the 1st. Irvin was pulled in the 6th and Al offers a suggestion of how the organization should consider handling his future starts.(17:30) Lord had a good outing, but all signs are pointing to him moving back to the bullpen once Michael Soroka returns from the IL on Wednesday. Lord began the season as a reliever before he was thrust into the rotation due to surrounding injuries.(27:00) The offense came through with ten hits in the Game 1 victory. James Wood went deep with a 2-run shot for his 10th homer of the year. Dylan Crews had a RBI double to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th; shortly after the bullpen coughed up the lead.(29:30) The bats were quiet in Game 2, Riley Adams solo HR was the only source of scoring. Josh Bell returned to the lineup after missing three straight games and went hitless in the cleanup spot. The bright spot came from CJ Abrams as he drew a trio of walks in the leadoff spot. Abrams has played at a level where he might return to the All-Star Game this summer.(36:40) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the Rochester Red Wings, gives Nats Chat an exclusive report on what is happening at AAA.
The Nationals season begins on Thursday March 27th at 4:05PM vs. the visiting Phillies. Mark & Al get you set for the 21st season of Washington Nationals baseball.(00:00) Nats moved to town 20 years ago(10:00) Minor league prospects to monitor: Robert Hassell III & Brady House(14:10) Brad Lord surprisingly contending for a bullpen spot(17:45) Nationals return their Rule 5 Pick Evan Reifert back to Tampa Bay(21:30) How to measure success in 2025(30:10) More homers this season as a team?(35:45) Evaluating the base running and stolen base threats(38:15) A look at the pitching staff(43:00) Season predictions(52:45) Expectations for attendance
The Nats lost 8-3 to the Cardinals on a scorching Sunday afternoon in the nation's capital. Al & Mark begin the show by discussing how the pitching staff is clearly fatigued during this stretch of 17 games in 17 days. DJ Herz did not have a good outing as he allowed five runs in less than five innings of work. Herz was lifted after 102 pitches and four relievers were needed behind him. (14:00) James Wood singled and drew a pair of walks in the loss. Wood so far has been walked six times in seven games and this seems like this might become a pattern for the rookie. (20:00) CJ Abrams is the team's lone representative at this month's All-Star game. Abrams leads the Nats in almost every offensive statistical category including OPS at .859. Mark notes that CJ has been Washington's lead-off hitter for a full calendar year now. (24:00) Jake Irvin however was snubbed from the National League roster and Al points out how this is a mistake. Irvin ranks 4th in WHIP in the NL and is tied for 2nd in pitching WAR. (31:00) Brady House has been promoted to play 3B at AAA-Rochester one day after Trey Lipscomb was promoted back to the Nationals. Could House be on the 2025 Opening Day roster? (36:00) Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, join Nats Chat for the fourth consecutive year. Bob tells Tim about Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, the only female pitcher in Negro Leagues history. Mamie lived for many years in the DMV before passing away in 2017. Learn more about your ad choices. Mark Zuckerman covers the Nats for MASN and co-hosts the Nats Chat podcast. He talks about the Nats smoke out and the Nats season
A jam packed edition of Nats Chat after a 10-6 victory over the Dodgers to avoid the sweep. Mark (Live from LA) & Al marvel at the five home runs hit by the Nationals in the victory; two of which came from Keibert Ruiz. He homered three times in less than 24 hours against his old team to already match last season's HR output for the young catcher (7 HRs). Luis Garcia went deep at the perfect time as his 3-run blast broke the 5-5 tie in the top of the 8th. (15:40) Jeimer Candelario had a go- ahead 2 run HR in the 5th as part of his big day in Los Angeles. Mark takes Al's approach on how to evaluate Candelario's utility to the franchise this season. (22:05) Patrick Corbin's outing began as a nightmare as he allowed three runs in three batters. Corbin then settled in and was able to make it through five innings despite issuing four walks. He enters June with a 4.92 ERA. (25:25) The "A" Bullpen was called upon on Wednesday and Hunter Harvey stepped up by nailing down the final six outs. Kyle Finnegan however had a rough afternoon, as he had a pitch clock violation and allowed a HR. Harvey has a long injury history and the hosts put in perspective the amount of work he has had this season and what lies ahead. (37:15) The Harrisburg Senators (AA Affiliate) are playing in Bowie this week and Tim Shovers caught up with Terry Byrom, the team's long-time voice. Terry gives his career background and also relays his first hand account of James Wood, Robert Hassell III, and Jackson Rutledge. Wood was promoted on Sunday after beginning the year in Wilmington. We begin with the continuing ownership saga that has now extended into 2023. (14:20) Washington signed a pair of Free Agents recently in Dominic Smith and Corey Dickerson. Where will each fit in defensively? How does all this affect where "Joey Four Bags" gets slotted on the lineup card? (22:10) The Nats also inked RHP Trevor Williams, a versatile arm who last year pitched for the Mets. Will he be in the starting rotation this season? (28:25) Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler, who have been the Nationals Radio tandem since 2006, make their Nats Chat debuts. For the second straight year the team from Washington will be home for the playoffs, this time as the Commanders. First person to pay for this? Scott Turner. Al joins Matt to discuss all things Commanders.
The Nats lost 8-5 and are 1-7 this season in Philadelphia. Al & Mark (Live from Citizens Bank Park) evaluate Erick Fedde's rough outing where his former high school teammate Bryce Harper homered off of him the 6th time in the past four years. The hosts hold a lengthy discussion about what went into the decision to pitch to Harper as opposed to walking him. Is something fundamentally wrong with developing pitching in the organization? (15:50) Cesar Hernandez played 2B on Saturday night had an nightmare stretch in the field in the 3rd and 4th innings. He had four instances of questionable defense, but was only charged one throwing verror. (22:20) CJ Abrams made a spectacular play to pull off a double play in the 1st inning. Nats Chat is quite in awe of the amount of athleticism displayed by Abrams on the play. Could he be the best defensive short stop in franchise history? (27:01) "Joey Four Bags" touched' em all again early in the game. Mark then points the absurd home run disparity between the Nationals and Phillies when facing each other this season (32-9). (36:30) MacKenzie Gore will make a rehab start on Sunday in Syracuse for AAA Rochester. Will he pitch for Washington this season? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Nats lost 4-3 in 12 innings as they were swept by the Braves on a walk-off hit by Austin Riley. He explains why despite the stats, he is in fully in favor of Soto heading to the Midsummer Classic for the 2nd straight season. (07:01) The Nationals inexplicably were unable to score in all three extra innings despite having an ghost runner at 2B each time. Lane Thomas was the only offense of the afternoon as he slugged a 3 run pinch hit HR in the 7th. Hear what Davey said about the offensive futility afterwards. (14:12) The bullpen had a solid afternoon as the six relievers only allowed two runs in eight innings of work. Kyle Finnegan escaped a 7th inning jam, Carl Edwards Jr. came through with four big outs, and Tanner Rainey tossed two scoreless extra innings. (23:55) Luis Garcia was slotted in the lead-off spot just like Al suggested in the previous Nats Chat. Garcia did not get a hit, but he did draw a rare walk. Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats lost 7-6 to Philadelphia despite leading 6-0 entering the sixth inning. Mark & Al recap yet another rough day for the Nationals bullpen, which made a habit this summer of blowing leads against the Phils. Luis Garcia played a large role in losing the lead as he made two poor plays in a row in the top of the 8th, which led to three runs.(17:58) Paolo Espino pitched very well, but ends up with a no-decision. He threw five scoreless frames before allowing two runners on base in the pivotal sixth. What has led to his recent resurgence on the mound? Could it be good karma for appearing on Nats Chat?(22:56) Juan Soto had a big game on Thursday as he reached base four times, including a 3 run HR. Mark explains his recent approach at the plate.(30:48) Keibert Ruiz started every game this series and went 2 for 14, including an 0 for 5 effort on Thursday. How much Riley Adams will we see during the five game series vs. the Mets?
The Nats lost 12-6 to the Phillies as Patrick Corbin's nightmare season continued. Al & Mark begin with the surprising pregame news that Victor Robles is being sent down to AAA Rochester. Should we have seen this demotion coming? Will he wear a Nationals uniform again?(15:23) Corbin had another rough outing and allowed a pair of HRs in the process. His evening started off smooth, but everything changed starting in the fourth. At what point can we have a serious conversation on whether or not he should be moved to the bullpen?(24:01) Brad Hand was DFA'd by Toronto just one month after the Blue Jays sent the Nationals Riley Adams in exchange for the southpaw reliever. A trade that Mike Rizzo irrefutably has already won.(26:41) **If you've listened to this podcast at all this season, you know how much we enjoy Paolo Espino. "The Secret Weapon" joins Nats Chat to discuss his unusual journey in professional baseball. 2021 has been difficult for the Nats, but there is a lot inspiration to draw from Paolo's story. He was drafted in 2006 and waited fifteen years to earn his first career win in the Major Leagues.
Al Galdi of his self titled podcast and the Nats Chat pod joins Bram to give us his thoughts on the Nats haul after all of their trades in the past 24 hours and why it was probably the right thing for the franchise, plus some thoughts on the Wizards and Washington Football Team.
