In episode 2 of Dugout of History, Chrystal and Colleen dig into the Pittsburgh drug trials, the scandal that many people know because the Pirate Parrot mascot was implicated as a coke dealer, but that had far-reaching impacts across major league baseball, including shaping the sport's drug policy into the Steroid Era.For me (producer Jesse, writing the show notes), it's a very interesting episode because I was a little kid at the time. I remembered Rod Scurry as a Yankee, for instance, and remember him dying young – though I definitely didn't put it together as an 11-year-old that his death was drug-related. Lonnie Smith wound up having a very interesting second act with Atlanta, leading the National League in on-base percentage in 1989 and hitting three homers in the 1991 World Series before blundering on the basepaths in Game 7. Keith Hernandez, obviously, was and is Keith Hernandez. So, I knew some of the details for this one, remembered others, and learned plenty for the first time. The story of the Pittsburgh drug trials also echoes through the way baseball has dealt with subsequent scandals, including in the sport's powers that be making the same mistakes. Thank goodness that's all history, though, and vice-related scandals involving superstars are… ah, dang it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ken Carman and Anthony Lima discuss the recent elections into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and if they've been marred by the issues brought by the steroid era of Major League Baseball.
The 2024 Hall of Fame class was announced on Tuesday evening and a trio of players were voted in; none of which whoever called Atlanta home (Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton, and Joe Mauer). The next three guys who came up short of the 75% voting threshold all wore the Braves uniform at some point in their careers (Billy Wagner, Gary Sheffield, and Andruw Jones). Wagner came agonizingly close this year, but ultimately fell five votes shy.(06:00) Eric & David point out reasons why some younger voters might be Andruw's biggest enemy in terms of his pursuit of Cooperstown. He has three more years remaining on the ballot, but still needs 60+ more votes to get over the hump.(13:00) Despite hitting over 500 homers, Gary Sheffield struck out in his final year on the BBWAA ballot. His next opportunity down the line will come from the New Era Committee, a voting panel of former players. This leads to a discussion of Steroid Era players that never were voted into the HOF.(24:35) Charlie Culberson is making a very serious attempt at becoming a relief pitcher in the twilight of his career for the Braves. Eric lends his insight on why Culberson and his 94 MPH Fastball might just pan out. David points out some other position players who could have attempted the same transition as Culberson.

Adam and Bob Stew debate the best broadcasting crews in sports history.

Who do you believe about steroids in baseball? In Chapter 8 of The A-Rod Chronicles, we try to wade through the sea of lies — from the league, from “Dr. Bosch,” from Alex Rodriguez — that make up the Biogenesis scandal. At the heart, though, this scandal was really about who was going to be held responsible for baseball's Steroid Era. And while A-Rod wasn't the only to take the fall, he would certainly become the league's most prominent scalp.Listen, like, review, recommend, share, subscribe! If you enjoy The A-Rod Chronicles, consider subscribing to Undrafted for free! On the latest MLB offseason edition of Inside the (Rob) Parker, Rob leads off with a deep dive into Tom Brady's retirement from the NFL. Football writers worship at Brady's feet so all signs point to him being a unanimous Pro Football Hall of Famer. But, given Brady's history of cheating (DeflateGate and SpyGate), do you think he would still get into the Hall of Fame if baseball writers were the ones doing the voting? If the writer kept Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens out of Cooperstown for circumstantial evidence at best, you don't think they'd do the same to a convicted cheater like Brady? Guess we'll never know. Later, baseball content creator Gary Sheffield Jr swings by to discuss his father's Hall of Fame candidacy, why he was so disappointed to see so many writers hold the Steroid Era against his dad even though he never tested positive, why his father's history of coming up clutch in the postseason should matter more, why some guys have a hard time playing well under the bright lights of New York and much more! Finally, Rob closes the show by praising MLB for putting an up-and-coming star like Jazz Chisholm on the cover of MLB The Show 23 - another 'MLB Bro you need to know' doing big things! Joe Pott hosts Sports Open Line tonight! Tonight's show is shortened due to KMOX's broadcast of the Cardinals game. In tonight's show, Joe is joined by NY Times contributor and MLB Network Radio analyst Scott Miller to discuss the playoffs and the legitimacy of MLB records when players were using performance enhancing drugs. Some people want Aaron Judge to be the sole placeholder of the single-season home run record because the others above him used forms of steroids. We take your calls all hour to reflect upon the Cardinals regular season, to preview the Wild Card round, and to voice your opinion on the records made thanks to steroids.
On today's episode, Jason kicks things off with a few thoughts on Aaron Judge hitting his 62nd home run of the season. It's a great accomplishment, but the fact remains that Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa all hit more dingers in a single season. So why then are television executives going out of their way to ignore it? Is it because Major League Baseball was complicit in the Steroid Era? Plus, J-Mac does a quick dive into the big showdown between the presumptive #1 and #2 picks in the 2023 NBA Draft - Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson. Big Vic is obviously the crown jewel, but Scoot is no consolation prize. In fact, Jason argues that Henderson is the second-coming of Derrick Rose. Later, FOX Soccer analyst Stu Holden swings by to discuss the US Men's National Team's underwhelming outings recently ahead of the upcoming World Cup, how he sees the final roster coming together and which potential lineup issues they could face, what we can expect from this young team in their first World Cup, the keys to getting out of group play, the steady growth of Major League Soccer here in the United States, and much more!
