The Nats opened the doubleheader vs. Cleveland with their 3rd straight win, but that momentum was halted just a few hours later. Mark & Al reluctantly begin again with the bullpen, who overall had an awful Tuesday at the ballpark.  They inherited a 6-2 lead in Game 1, but the Guardians immediately scored six runs in the top of the 7th.  The offense bailed them out and then Kyle Finnegan notched his 100th career save.(7:10) The Nationals were trailing when Brad Lord departed Game 2, but the 'pen still managed to give up five runs in only three innings of work. Lucas Sims allowed three runs and his ERA is now up to 12.34.(14:30) Jake Irvin continued his season long trend of having his roughest inning in the top of the 1st. Irvin was pulled in the 6th and Al offers a suggestion of how the organization should consider handling his future starts.(17:30) Lord had a good outing, but all signs are pointing to him moving back to the bullpen once Michael Soroka returns from the IL on Wednesday.  Lord began the season as a reliever before he was thrust into the rotation due to surrounding injuries.(27:00) The offense came through with ten hits in the Game 1 victory.  James Wood went deep with a 2-run shot for his 10th homer of the year.  Dylan Crews had a RBI double to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th; shortly after the bullpen coughed up the lead.(29:30) The bats were quiet in Game 2, Riley Adams solo HR was the only source of scoring.  Josh Bell returned to the lineup after missing three straight games and went hitless in the cleanup spot.  The bright spot came from CJ Abrams as he drew a trio of walks in the leadoff spot. Abrams has played at a level where he might return to the All-Star Game this summer.(36:40) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the Rochester Red Wings, gives Nats Chat an exclusive report on what is happening at AAA.

The Nats totaled 15 hits on their way to an 11-6 triumph at the Reds on Saturday evening.  Mark (From Cincinnati) & Al note Amed Rosario's biggest game yet since joining the team as he had four hits and a 3-run homer in the 6th to put Washington ahead for good.(07:00) Riley Adams had a big game with both the bat and his arm. Adams came through with a late 2-run single and threw out a pair of base stealers. Adams only has 22 at bats so far this season in the backup catcher role.(11:15) Trevor Williams had another rocky outing as he gave up four runs off of nine hits in just over five frames. Williams' ERA is up to 5.86 and his spot in the rotation is under closer scrutiny as Michael Soroka is poised to return soon from the IL.(16:20) Andrew Chafin excelled in his organizational debut as he recorded two strikeouts in relief of Williams to keep the 7-4 lead in tact through six innings. Mark relays his colorful impression of the veteran lefty who is full of personality.(23:00) MacKenzie Gore takes the mound on Sunday in the series rubber match.  Gore currently leads all of MLB w/ 59 strikeouts this season in seven starts.

In this episode of the Talk Nats Podcast, we start with a detailed look at Michael Soroka's rehab progress following his biceps injury in late March. After two encouraging starts in Double-A Harrisburg, Soroka appears physically and mentally ready to rejoin the Nationals rotation. With improved command of his changeup and increased pitch count, the right-hander could soon bring valuable experience and upside to a developing young staff. Manager Davey Martinez hasn't confirmed a return date yet, but momentum is building for Soroka's imminent reactivation. In our second segment, we break down a gritty homestand that showed the Nationals' character despite a lopsided loss to the Mets to close it out. The team went 4–3 overall, with comeback wins fueled by key contributions from young stars like CJ Abrams, James Wood, and Riley Adams. Their performance — and a sharp turnaround in one-run games — suggests a team starting to forge an identity rooted in resilience and chemistry. With strong clubhouse energy and budding talent, the Nationals may not be contenders yet, but they're learning how to win together. Ready to snack smarter? The Nats halted their four game skid with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon over Arizona.  Al & Mark have plenty of praise for Mitchell Parker, who has started both games that the Nationals have won this season.  Parker cleanly fielded a tough comebacker at the end of his outing, notable because of how poorly he fielded his position last season.(10:00) The bullpen was handed a three run lead with three innings to go and did just enough to prevail.  Kyle Finnegan recorded his 2nd save of the season while navigating through traffic on the bases. The final out of the game was a first in franchise history as Riley Adams threw out an attempted steal of 2nd base in order to end the affair.(16:45) James Wood had a hot start on Saturday as he made a nifty catch near the wall and then hit a 2 run double in the bottom of the first. Wood was slotted in the 5th spot in the lineup, a rarity for him.(21:00) Josh Bell had a triple in the win.  You read that right.(24:50) Answering a listener email about the possibility of Amed Rosario getting reps at 3rd base in expense of Paul DeJong for offensive purposes.(28:00) There was some question as to who would start on Sunday as it was the injured Michael Soroka's turn in the rotation, but instead Trevor Williams moves up on full rest due to the day off on Thursday.  There had been speculation that Brad Lord could move out of the 'pen, but instead the organization opted to figure out the vacant spot on Tuesday night after MacKenzie Gore pitches on Monday.

The Nats topped the Braves 5-1 on Sunday afternoon to clinch a winning record over their division rivals this season (7-4 thus far). Mark (From Cobb County) and Al evaluate the importance of that stat is in terms of measuring where the organization currently sits. (05:00) DJ Herz tossed five scoreless innings and struck out eight. Herz has made seven starts in the majors this year and his ERA is at 3.84. (08:30) Eduardo Salazar recorded five outs out of the bullpen and has not allowed a run in ten appearances this month. Salazar was acquired off the waiver wire in June after Seattle let him go. (12:00) Jacob Young had a pair of hits and scored a run in the victory. The hosts note that in a less competitive year, Young would firmly be in the NL Rookie of the Year race. (20:30) CJ Abrams had an up and down performance on Sunday. Abrams had two RBI singles, but committed an error for the third consecutive day. Abrams seems off in the field and there are growing concerns at where this is headed. (25:00) Drew Millas came through with a pair of hits and will probably stay with the club as the backup catcher this week. The team needs to open a roster spot for Dylan Crews and that likely will be Riley Adams. (28:15) Crews will make his debut on Monday night vs. Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and the New York Yankees. The Nats led 5-0 early on, but ended up losing to the Cardinals 7-6 in 11 innings on a hot Friday night in D.C. Al & Mark react to the overworked bullpen, which allowed a run in each of the final four frames. Kyle Finnegan blew the save opportunity after giving up a solo HR to Wilson Contreras to tie the game in the top of the 9th. Washington lost in rather cruel fashion as Riley Adams allowed a passed ball following Contreras swinging at strike 3 in the top of the 11th, which brought in the go ahead run. (14:00) The offense gathered 14 hits, but committed multiple base running blunders. Jesse Winker had two himself, but was easily tagged on a failed bunt attempt late in the game. (19:30) Luis Garcia Jr. homered and collected four hits on Friday. Garcia already has hit a career high in homers this season with ten. (24:00) The replacement for Joey Meneses, Juan Yepez, got the start at 1B after being promoted from AAA-Rochester. Yepez singled and drew a walk, but did strikeout twice. The Nats overcame a 5-0 deficit to beat the Mets 7-5 on Wednesday evening to end their three game skid. Al & Tim begin with Luis Garcia Jr., who slugged a pair of homers in the victory. Garcia hit a 3 run HR in the bottom of the 6th and then added insurance in the bottom of the 8th with a Solo shot. He has nine homers so far this season, already equaling his career high. (07:00) James Wood's first career RBI put the Nationals ahead for good in the bottom of the 7th. He immediately followed it up with a stolen base. (15:00) Riley Adams is back in D.C. and fellow catcher Drew Millas was optioned back to Rochester. This comes after the two swapped roster spots a month ago and Adams was expected to work at 1B while in AAA. (21:00) Mitchell Parker gave up the most runs of any outing so far and a trio of homers in the process, but did make through six innings. (25:00) Hunter Harvey pitched for the third straight day and recorded a crucial strikeout of J.D. Martinez to preserve the lead. Kyle Finnegan took over in the 9th and notched his 23rd save of the season, the second most in the NL. (35:00) The Nats will continue their July 4th tradition on Thursday by hosting an 11:05AM game. The Nats avoided the sweep with a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland to conclude a winning road trip. Mark (From Progressive Field) & Al have another very good Jake Irvin outing to discuss as the young right-hander lasted six innings and threw 98 pitches. Irvin has allowed three runs or fewer in six of his past seven starts. (05:00) Mark gives the latest on CJ Abrams and Jacob Young, both of which did not play on Sunday. Abrams hurt his shoulder on Friday night and Young exited Saturday with a swollen hand after being hit by a pitch. (12:00) The bullpen used three arms to finish off the win and the hosts note that there has less relief pitcher usage recently. This is a difficult stretch as the next scheduled off day is not until June 10th. (16:00) The offense came through with an early four run in the top of the 2nd. Joey Meneses had a RBI double and Ildemaro Vargas, in the lineup for Abrams, collected a RBI single. Lane Thomas had a good afternoon while playing CF as he had two RBIs. (20:00) Nick Senzel was picked off and the Nationals have now been picked off eight times in the past ten games! (23:30) Drew Millas and Riley Adams swapped roster spots on Sunday. Adams had a bad game on Saturday behind the plate and the stated reason for the demotion is to get him more at bats and to get work at 1B. Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats were swept by the visiting Dodgers on Thursday afternoon as they came up on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel. L.A.'s starter however, the highly paid Yoshinobu Yamamoto tossed six shutout frames. (12:00) The offense could only muster one run and it came on a Joey Meneses RBI single in the bottom of the 8th. Among those struggling at the plate, Joey Gallo is hitting just .129 this season. Eddie Rosario is also well below the "Mendoza Line" so far this year. (04:36) Derek Law gave up four runs despite retiring the first batter he faced in the bottom of the 6th. This blighted Trevor Williams' final line as two of the three runs he ceded came with Law on the mound. This was another game with many bullpen arms used, as the team sent out 13 relievers collectively over the weekend. (12:00) Riley Adams caught every game this series as Keibert Ruiz remains out to illness. The Nats came up short in their sweep attempt as they fell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Miami. Al gets you up to speed on the catching situation as Riley Adams started every game this series while Keibert Ruiz has been out of the starting lineup since taking a foul ball to the mask on Wednesday in New York. It is important to note that Ruiz did pinch hit and minor league catcher Drew Millas will join the team on Monday in Toronto per Mark's report. (05:00) Trevor Williams had a solid outing, but the 2 run HR he gave up to Jorge Soler was the difference. It was Williams 2nd straight good performance after navigating through a difficult stretch this summer. The final score is uglier than it looked, but nonetheless the Nats lost 12-3 to Philadelphia, despite nursing a 3-0 lead entering the late innings. Al recaps Cory Abbott's nightmarish 8th inning where surrendered 8 runs to the Phillies to put the game well out of reach. The fatigued bullpen forced Davey Martinez to stick with Abbott, but immediately afterwards Abbott was sent down to AAA. (14:45) The shame of the day was that Jake Irvin threw 6 shutout IP and struck out 7 in a no decision. It was his first scoreless outing since his 2nd career start in San Francisco back in May. From a big picture standpoint, him shutting out a powerful lineup was arguably more important than the actual final score. (19:00) Lane Thomas yet again had an all around excellent game as he had an OF assist and came through with a pair of hits. Riley Adams yet again took advantage of a rare start as he also had 2 hits himself. Adams' OPS this season in limited playing time is a staggering .937 and Al puts that high level hitting in perspective. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nats hung on 10-7 over Boston to take the series rubber match on Thursday afternoon. Mark & Al put in perspective what the victory symbolizes as they won their 55th game of the season, which equals last year's output with forty games still remaining. Washington has won 6 of their past 8 series and are 6 games over .500 since the All Star Break. (11:30) The offense broke out against Chris Sale to reach double digit runs and saw contributions from all across the lineup. Joey Menses had a pair of doubles that led to a 5 RBI afternoon. Keibert Ruiz reached base 5 times as the DH too see his scorching August continue. Other top contributors included Riley Adams, Stone Garrett, and Jeter Downs. (18:25) Patrick Corbin pitched well as he only allowed 1 run in 6 IP. Coming off a start where he issued 7 walks, on Thursday he didn't throw any "Ball Fours". His ERA is at 4.71, which is the lowest it has been since mid May. (27:20) The rout almost turned into a nightmare as Robert Garcia allowed 6 runs in less than an inning; which included a Grand Slam. This led to Davey Martinez having to use Hunter Harvey and Kyle Finnegan despite an earlier 9-1 lead. (31:20) This weekend is an odd 3 game series as the Phillies will be in D.C. on Friday and Saturday, but the finale will be Sunday night in Williamsport, PA to coincide with the Little League World Series. Al & Mark start with the decisive 4 run bottom of the 8th where Jeimer Candelario had a RBI double and Joey Meneses was the hero with a 3 run blast. "Joey Four Bags" has been on a tear this month as he is slugging .535 in July. (09:00) Davey made sure to get both Keibert Ruiz & Riley Adams into the lineup and was rewarded with 2 hits and a RBI double for Adams. Will there be a continued push to get both catchers at bats every day? (17:00) Trevor Williams made it through 6 IP and ultimately gave up 4 runs. The bullpen only yielded one run; which led to Kyle Finnegan notching his 14th Save of the season. (25:00) Yet again rain played tricks on the Nationals as the first rain delay on Tuesday evening did not have any rain. Why does it seem like it gets botched in Navy Yard multiple times a year? Get out your brooms as the 2+ year sweep drought in a 3 game series is thankfully over as the Nats took care of the Giants 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. Al & Tim have plenty to revel in, but especially Lane Thomas' unforgettable day where he tied a franchise record with 4 stolen bases, 3 hits at the plate, and flashed the leather in the field multiple times. However, the conversation quickly morphs into... should they trade Lane next week before the Deadline? (15:00) Riley Adams homered on Sunday and his OPS is well above .800 despite having fewer than 100 plate appearances. What can the Nationals do to get him more playing time? (22:30) MacKenzie Gore had a good outing as he threw 5 shutout innings with 8 Ks and only allowed 4 hits. Gore lasted 90 pitches and then handed it off to the bullpen. This was his best outing since last month in San Diego (June 25th). (29:00) The highlight of the sweep might be how effective the bullpen was all weekend. The Nats were swept by the Reds and Thursday's finale was a 5-4 extra inning defeat for their 14th loss in their past 15 home games. Mark & Al recap the odd affair, that saw a nearly two hour rain delay in the top of the 2nd; thus prematurely ending MacKenzie Gore's start. This is his final schedule start until the All Star Break and his ERA is now at 4.42. (10:15) The rain delay caused the afternoon to become a Bullpen Game and the "A" Bullpen took the mound in addition to a few others. Hunter Harvey threw a perfect top of the 9th, but in the 10th immediately surrendered a 2 run HR to Nick Senzel. This does create plenty of complications for this weekend's upcoming series vs. Texas. (20:00) Keibert Ruiz went 0 for 5 while DHing and his OPS is a troubling .639. What to make of him at the moment at the plate? Why isnt' Riley Adams getting more chances at 1B? (25:50) Alex Call homered, stole a base, and walked twice. Call's HR briefly gave the Nationals the lead and this came one day after returning from Rochester. The Nats lost 8-4 to the Reds in the annual 11:05AM July 4th start in D.C. Mark & Alex have plenty to carp about as the sloppy play began right away with poor defense in the 1st inning. Adding insult to the afternoon, Cincinnati was able to steal 6 bases off of Riley Adams behind the plate. (06:10) Patrick Corbin struggled while allowing 10 hits and 6 earned runs. Corbin's ERA is now up to 5.13 and for comparison sake it was 5.68 at this time last summer. It was the 4th time this year that Corbin gave up double digit hits in an outing. (19:00) It was another day of mild results for the offense, but Derek Hill did have his 1st RBI since being promoted from AAA. CJ Abrams did not play well in the field, but he did have a pair of doubles on Tuesday. Lane Thomas doubled too and his average currently sits at .301. (26:00) This series against the 1st Place Reds has been a tad sobering for Washington's Rebuild efforts, because Cincy has exposed the areas that need to be improved on South Capitol Street. Ryan is joined by Tobi Altizer from 106.7 The Fan to first discuss Davey using Keibert Ruiz behind the plate, and not using Riley Adams. They discuss that at first, and then discuss how Ruiz could be in the lineup with him & not catch. The bullpen has been strong at times, but as of lately it has started to spiral and Ryan belibves that is because of the usage of the bullpen with guys like Mason Thompson, & Hunter Harvey. How can Davey manage this better? Who else should be pitching more meaningful innings? Lastly, they look at CJ Abrams and some of his fiending woes as of late.  Follow Ryan Clary on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Ryanclary11 Follow Locked On Nationals on Twitter: https://twitter.com/LO_Nationals Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Nationals were no match for visiting Pittsburgh on Saturday in the twin bill. They lost the opener 6-3 and then were clobbered 16-1 in the nightcap. Al & Mark point out just how poorly the Nats have played at home this season despite their recent winning road trip. Chad Kuhl did not pitch well on Saturday evening and his future with the organization is respectfully brought into question. (11:30) The bullpen did not have a banner day and it was so bad that Lane Thomas had to pitch in Game 2. Will LHP Anthony Banda remain on the roster? We give the latest update on Sean Doolittle's rehab effort as well. (22:00) Riley Adams started behind the plate in Game 1 and came through with pair of hits and RBIs. Might we see him in the lineup as the team seeks to give Keibert Ruiz more rest. (28:15) Al points out how well Alex Call has performed in the lead-off spot during the 1st inning. What role will he grow into as the season develops? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates have a doubleheader today as they get set to take on a red hot Pirates team that has been mashing through the first month of the season. Ryan breaks down the keys to a victory today, but also brings up the small margin of success when Riley Adams is behind the plate for Patrick Corbin. Why is that? Ryan gets into that here. There's one of our top prospects down in Fredericksburg who has been very slow to start the year at the plate, and it has caused some concern for Nationals fans. Ryan discusses the slow start to Robert Hassell's 2023 campaign, and gets into what this could mean for his MLB debut.  Follow Ryan Clary on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Ryanclary11 Follow Locked On Nationals on Twitter: https://twitter.com/LO_Nationals Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Nats lost 5-1 on Friday afternoon before Game 2 of their doubleheader against the Phillies was postponed. Mark & Al catch you up on this weekend's very confusing schedule, which as of now has a doubleheader slated for Saturday (which was the original plan earlier this week). (11:15) Not only did Philadelphia win the game, but they also dominated in terms of base running. The Phillies were six for six with runners trying to steal, as opposed to Washington who made multiple outs on the bases in a single inning. Davey Martinez was quite critical of Erick Fedde after the game, more so than his catcher Riley Adams. (24:05) CJ Abrams had an egregious throwing error on Friday as the ball went way over the head of Joey Meneses. He has had many highlight reel plays this year, but should we be concerned about his throwing long term? (26:10) MacKenzie Gore will not pitch for the Nationals this season despite his efforts this month. Mark explains what went into the decision for him to not to take the mound to conclude 2022. Al then puts in perspective just how bad the continued organizational luck with pitching this season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nats beat Miami 5-3 to guarantee a series win while hitting four solo homers and oddly enough not singling. Mark & Al run through the offensive stars from the victory, including all the starting outfielders (Thomas/Robles/Call). Lane Thomas for the second straight season is hitting well post trade deadline and the hosts wonder where he fits into the 2023 lineup. (06:50) Victor Robles homered for just the 10th time post 2019, but this one went over 400 feet. He had been out of the lineup for a week and Mark explains the factors that led to why. (12:14) Luke Voit homered from the cleanup spot, his 21st of the season. Voit is arbitration eligible next season; and does that mean he is likely to return next year? (16:11) Riley Adams had a RBI double and has had an offensive impact ever since Keibert Ruiz's injury. However, Tres Barrera has not yet played since he was called at the beginning of the month and it does beg the question as to why that is the case. (21:10) Erick Fedde only lasted four innings, but his bullpen combined for five scoreless frames. What effect will pitch clocks have next season on Fedde, who is a very slow worker on the mound.
