Barbara Maier Gustern was shoved from behind outside her Chelsea residence. Friends found the well-known and beloved voice coach in the apartment lobby covered in blood. A bicyclist spotted the injured 87-year-old on the street and brought her in. Gustern hit her head during the attack and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment. She ultimately passed away from her injuries after being placed on life support. Police released security footage of the incident, which showed Lauren Pazienza reportedly shoving Gustern before running away. Police, also say the suspect returned to watch, as the victim was carried away by ambulance.  Lauren Pazienza was facing manslaughter charges. Initially, she pleaded not guilty but has now changed her plea to guilty to first-degree manslaughter. Justice Felicia Mennin sentenced Pazienza to 8 years, but then tacked on another 6 months, blasting Pazienza for her “inability to take responsibility for her actions.”  Pazienza had given a probation officer conflicting stories about her involvement in events surrounding the attack, claiming that she simply “ran into” the victim. How do we tend to the delicate balance of the ecosystem of roles we play as artists of our lives? What does it mean to be a singer and who gets to claim that title? How can healing practitioners benefit from exploring their physical voice as a medium to convey and translate their passion and life calling? My guest in conversation is NYC-based singer-songwriter extraordinaire who also happens to be  my voice teacher, Jamie Leonhart. Jamie and I have worked together on a weekly basis on exploring and cultivating my voice. The impact of our work together on my healing journey has been profound, and I'm deeply grateful for the safe space Jamie provided for these explorations. Our conversation revolved around Jamie's creative process of writing and recording her latest album The Illusion of Blue in the midst of the pandemic and the resulting closure of performance spaces - which propelled many performing artists to question their roles within society. Jamie and I also discussed tending to the delicate balance of holding the identity as an artist, a mother, and a teacher, working with creatives who are not professional singers on their voices, and the fear of claiming our right to explore our unique physical voices. This conversation means so much to me. Listening back, I was moved by the rapport and trust we've slowly built over time. I'm excited for you to get to know Jamie as an artist and her unique perspectives on her work. Here's Jamie's bio:Drawing comparisons to the likes of Norah Jones and Feist, the sharp-witted singer-songwriter Jamie Leonhart is an artist who is difficult to categorize, dynamic in emotional range and diverse in genre-crossing ability.Jamie Leonhart was born in New York City, the granddaughter of a cantor and the youngest of three musically-curious children.  She began studying the violin at age three and singing soon after.Jamie inhabits a hybrid of popular music that incorporates jazz, indie-pop, and quirky torch song cabaret.  Live, her audience becomes a collective co-conspirator as she intones her confessions, dissatisfactions and desires, supported by arrangements that move from somber to playfully bombastic in a moment. Jamie's approachable demeanor belies powerhouse vocals and her ability to deliver intricate compositions, which she does with depth and clarity. As a songwriter, Jamie writes about vulnerability, patience, frustration, shifting perspectives and trust.Jamie is employed as both a commercial voiceover artist and vocalist and also works as a background and session singer (Steely Dan and St.Vincent among others) Jamie is a 2015 commissioned NEW YORK VOICES artist of The Public Theater/Joe's Pub, and created ESTUARY: an artist | mother story through this commission. Her second solo record, the illusion of blue, was released in February 2022 .You can find and connect with Jamie via her website, listen to her albums Illusion of Blue and The Truth About Suffering on Apple Music or Spotify. If you're ever curious about exploring how vocal explorations and training can unlock your unique expressions, I highly recommend reaching out to Jamie to see if working together will make sense for you.  This podcast is hosted, produced, and edited by Jonathan Koe. This week's guest is Shannon Coates. This is part I of my interview with Dr Shannon Coates, who is an acclaimed voice teacher, international presenter and creator of The Vocal Instrument 101 Online Course. This is a candid interview with Shannon as she begins by sharing her earliest memories of how she discovered the joy of singing as part of a musical family and the journey that led her to a highly successful teaching career. Shannon tells us that she began her teaching career, as an independent studio voice teacher where she worked with a broad range of students. Shannon explains that her own professional and teaching experiences, inspired her to create training programs and resources for teachers outside of academia to equip them with the skills and knowledge that are most useful for them. Shannon had discovered that all the classical tuition received did not give her the tools she needed for contemporary singing. The other realisation for Shannon was that the majority of voice pedagogy classes were being taught by classical voice teachers who had never owned or operated an independent voice studio themselves. Furthermore, she believed that independent studio teachers, were unable to access the training they required without sacrificing time away from the studios, and losing income. In this episode Shannon also shares with us the qualities that she believes that a good teacher should possess, the core components of her training programs and how these are relevant and beneficial to the teaching voice community. Today's guest and my very first guest on the Thriving singer podcast is non-other than the great David Jones, who has developed an international career as an author, vocal pedagogue, teacher of singers, and teachers in Europe and the U.S.  David is celebrating 50 successful years of teaching the fall of 2022 He has trained singers performing at opera houses and festivals such as the New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Berlin Staatsoper, Vienna Staatsoper, Opera North U.K. the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Salzburg Festival, and L'Opera Bastille in Paris. David Jones is a graduate of Texas Christian University with graduate research at the University of North Texas. Having also researched at the Groningen University Hospital (Groningen, The Netherlands) and the Laboratoire de la Voix Voice Clinic in Paris, he has had the opportunity to study how Old World concepts can be therapeutic in treating voice disorders. He also works in conjunction with the practice of Laryngologist Dr. Benjamin Asher in New York. In 1979, he studied with internationally known vocal pedagogue Allan R. Lindquest (1891-1984), founding member of NATS and the Amercian Academy of Teachers of Singing. It was through Mr. Jones' study with Lindquest that he learned the concepts of Lindquest's teachers, which included Enrico Caruso, Mme. Ingebjard-Isene (teacher of Flagstad), Joseph Hislop, Maestro Rosati (teacher of Gigli), and Mme. Novikova. Additional instructors of the Lindquest concepts with whom David Jones studied include Virginia Botkin, Dr. Suzanne Hickman, and Dr. Barbara Mathis, who performed scientific research on the therapeutic benefits of the exercises. It was through this study that Mr. Jones studied the concepts of the Swedish-Italian School of singing. In 1982, Mr. Jones studied with Dixie Neill, the primary teacher of Ben Hepner, and later with Dr. Evelyn Reynolds. Dr. Reynold's teachers included Lola Fletcher (student of Herbert Witherspoon), tenor Hollis Arment, William Vennard, author of “Singing: The Mechanism and the Technique”, and Ralph Erolle, instructor of the well-known soprano Arleen Auger. David Jones has trained singers performing at such opera houses and festivals as the New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Berlin Staatsoper, Vienna Staatsoper, Opera North U.K. the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Salzburg Festival, and L'Opera Bastille in Paris. Mr. Jones has been published by both European NATS and Classical Singer Magazine. Presenting seminars for teachers twice yearly in New York City and in Europe, he now dedicates his energy toward sharing information with teachers, writing articles, and teaching in his New York Studio and in Europe. In our interview we travel far and wide, exploring how he got into the world of singing and how he gathered and refined the concepts he now teaches.  We talk about vocal trauma and what causes it, the importance of sensations in singing, diagnosing Fach, and what a voice type consists of. We talk about collaborative teaching, and problem-solving together with the student, making them aware of the process.  We dive into the realm of feeling safe in a voice lesson and what not to put up with. How some teachers might be qualified in their information but not in the psychology of teaching. Connecting mind and body through work such as Feldenkreis or Alexander Technique and the importance of identifying and releasing tension whatever the cause may be. And last but not least how to work with different coaches while keeping your technique. And many other things connected to healthy singing. An actor's voice is as important - if not more so - than their look when it comes to casting. Film makers have more options than stage - for example the voices of many of the Bond girls in the first 007 films were re-dubbed by German-born British actress Nikki van der Zyl - even Dr No's Ursula Andress. But that's the extreme - actors need to not only have appealing and versatile voices, they also need stamina. All these skills are taught by Kirstie O'Sullivan, the former Head of Voice for The Actors' Program in Auckland who now has her own business called The Voice Practice..

A big focus of her teaching is fostering positive and encouraging relationships between singers and other music professionals while helping them develop the tools to keep singing in their lives beyond their formal training during their adolescent years. The Holistic Voice: Navigating Your Life as a Vocalist

We sit down with respected artist, musician, and singing actor Nathan Gunn on this week's episode. Given the baritone's wide acclaim for his diverse performing career bridging the genres of opera, musical theater, and recital it was a perfect opportunity for this audience to let the recording roll. Because we like to keep things short and sweet, this recording is part one of two in this series. Topics covered include Nathan's background and education, finding individuality as a singer, the necessity for evolution in musical theater and opera, and more. The Holistic Voice Podcast is a free resource created by vocalists, for vocalists. We believe a successful singer needs more than just a great voice. Artistic development, mental and physical health, business skills, and career opportunities all contribute to a singer's potential. If you are looking for resources and education on how to navigate life as a vocalist, this podcast is for you. Stay tuned for part two coming your way! Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/theholisticvoice)
