Lorenzo Cain on his Royals retirement and will he lead parade into team Hall of Fame?

The Royals celebrated the Kansas City career of Lorenzo Cain over the weekend with a contract-signing ceremony that allowed him to retire as Royal. On today's episode of SportsBeat KC, The Star's sports podcast, you'll hear from Cain about his KC career, with an emphasis on the 2014 and 2015 postseasons. The occasion got us wondering about who else might receive such a ceremony with the Royals, and/or eventually join the team's hall of fame. Manager Ned Yost will be the first from the group to enter the hall at a September ceremony. But who else? It's a little tricky for this reason: George Brett, Frank White, Amos Otis, Hal McRae and Willie Wilson played most of (or all of) their respective MLB careers in Kansas City. They're the franchise's top-five players in games played. Cain tweet The second championship stretch for the Royals was populated with players who spent eight or fewer seasons with the Royals: Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, among others. But player movement is more common now and should be taken into account when considering such an honor. Besides, there are Hall of Fame players from the earlier era who weren't Royals lifers (for instance, John Mayberry spent just six of his 15 big-league seasons in Kansas City). Our list of players from the 2014-15 era who should enter the Royals Hall of Fame includes Salvador Perez, Alex Gordon, Cain, Hosmer, Moustakas, Escobar, Kelvin Herrera, Davis and Holland. Maybe the HDH bullpen enters as a trio. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nats lost 9-5 to the Mets in the series rubber match on Wednesday afternoon. Mark & Al start by digesting the fact that Juan Soto is playing Baseball for another team on the other side of the country. The franchise has lost many stars in the past few years, but this one feels different in a more profound way. (10:03) Luke Voit will join the team on Thursday in Philadelphia and will likely be at 1B and in the heart of the order. He will take the roster spot of Alcides Escobar, who has been barely playing ever since Luis Garcia got called up. (21:10) Hitting 9th and playing 3B was... Ildemaro Vargas. He is known for his glove (committed a throwing error) and not his bat (went 4 for 4). The conversation then steers to Anibal Sanchez as he struggled again on the mound. The Nats took care of the Brewers 8-2 as Davey Martinez featured a new look lineup card. Al & Mark (Live from Milwaukee) recap Sunday's victory that saw Juan Soto moved down to 3rd in the order and with Keibert Ruiz now occupying the 2nd spot. The result..... eight consecutive hits in a six run 4th inning. (18:04) Nelson Cruz exited early after suffering a sprained ankle while sliding into 2nd base and was replaced by Riley Adams as DH. What will the roster move be to replace him? Josh Bell's average has fallen below .300 (.291) as he is 0 for his last 19. Is that why Bell dropped to fifth in the order instead of clean-up? (25:55) Mark handicaps the situation at SS as Dee Strange-Gordon has seen elevated playing time at the expense of Alcides Escobar. Juan Soto and Nelson Cruz both went deep, which lead to a discussion about each of their season's thus far. (15:06) Cesar Hernandez had three hits before the third inning concluded as he was a big part of the early rally. Dee Strange-Gordon played shortstop for another game as Alcides Escobar remains out with an unusual affliction in his finger. (33:20) Cade Cavalli struck out six in his start for AAA Rochester on Wednesday and then the hosts look at Cole Henry's performance so far this year with Harrisburg. (19:25) Juan Soto was caught napping at 3rd base for a crucial out in the 5th inning. Mark explains the "Inside Baseball" that went into that play. However, he did homer in the 1st inning. (23:31) Keibert Ruiz had a solid afternoon as he homered, doubled, and also threw out a runner trying to steal second base. (30:07) Next up is a three game series in Anaheim. The Nats lost 10-5 in Colorado in their final road game of the season. Al & Mark assess where the rotation stands as Paolo Espino's outing was cut short due to the two hour rain delay  that began in the top of the 3rd. Will he get the nod for Sunday's finale vs. Boston as Patrick Corbin season is over?(17:55) Juan banged his knee into the chain link outfield fence while making an excellent catch.  He stayed in the game and we have been told he is OK.  At the plate, he had a RBI infield single and a walk (1 for 4).  If the game had been called during the rain delay, his single would not have counted.  Why not sit him after running into the fence?(25:21) Alcides Escobar made one of the pretties defensive plays of the season just after making a throwing error.  Hear what the hosts have to say about his jump throw across the diamond.(27:57) Listener submitted question about how will the Nationals fix the pitching for next season.  Will it all be internal or will they spend money in free agency?(34:30) Cade Cavalli's final start in Rochester did not even last an inning.  His numbers in AAA were not nearly as good as his previous stints.  What's a realistic expectation for when he will be promoted to Washington?

ll eyes are are on a quality group of starting pitchers: the A's Sonny Gray, the Pirates' Gerrit Cole and the Tigers' Justin Verlander. Earlier reports said Verlander could hit the trade market in the coming weeks. In order for that to happen, Verlander must waive his 10-and-5 rights. The Cubs and Tigers have been engaging in talks, according to reports, but the Cubs seemingly are not willing to take on Verlander's contract. The Cubs and White Sox made for strange bedfellows on July 13, culminating in a trade that sent highly sought-after left-hander Jose Quintana to the North Side. The White Sox received a king's ransom in the deal, further bolstering their farm system. On the opposite side of the spectrum, what will the Royals do? With some key players — Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar — eyeing free agency after the season, could the 2015 World Series champs blow it all up and go back to Square 1?
