Who gets to decide who we are?In this episode, Rick Lee and Devonya Havis pull up a chair with philosopher and political theorist Falguni Sheth to talk about the ways identity is shaped, claimed, and—more often than not—forced upon us. From census categories and legal definitions to personal choices and political struggles, they dig into the tensions between how we see ourselves and how we're seen by others. What does it mean to be recognized—or misrecognized—by the state? How do institutions decide which identities “fit” and which ones have to be managed, disciplined, or erased? And when does refusing to conform become its own form of power? With insights from Sheth's work on race, law, and political power, this conversation moves between philosophy, history, and the headlines of today. The hosts talk about the state's obsession with controlling identity, from laws targeting Muslim women to the racial bias baked into facial recognition software. But they also ask whether there's room for resistance—whether refusing to be easily categorized might be a way to push back. By the time last call rolls around, they're raising a glass to the troublemakers, the misfits, and the ones who just won't play by the rules.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-173-unruly-identity-with-falguni-sheth-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! Summary NASA's data democratization efforts through the Power project have facilitated the use of satellite and modeling data in decision-making for renewable energy, buildings, sustainable infrastructure, and agroclimatology. The project serves two primary data sets: global surface solar radiation and global surface meteorology, spanning over four decades. Users, such as Joe, Jill, Joshua, Margaret, and Ben, leverage this data for decisions related to cost savings, drone operations, technology implementation, research interventions, and optimal configurations. Overcoming barriers like data accessibility, domain knowledge, and data quality characterization, the project aims to make data available to everyone. The recent modernization has significantly increased data uptake, with 7 million monthly requests and a threefold growth in the last five years. Highlights
In Unruly Women: Race, Neocolonialism, and the Hijab (Oxford UP, 2022), Falguni Sheth explores the multiple ways that liberalism is understood and exploited, and liberalism's origin as a project of British colonialism and as a legacy of settler colonialism in the U.S. The “unruly women” in the author's title are, in liberalism, women who do not conform or who are not “suitably feminist”—like Muslim women who veil or Black women who, really, simply exist. Falguni argues that certain key terms, such as professionalism, dismissiveness, excruciation, ontopolitics, and address are crucial to our understanding of the ways that women of color are treated in legal cases and in the broader culture as well as our understanding of the psychic violence that liberalism and colonialism perpetuate on women of color. In our interview today, we discuss liberalism as a problem in theory, too, and not just in practice and its connections to the prejudice and discrimination faced by different groups of women of color. We also talk about the ways that feminism is defined by liberal and radical western feminists, the limitations of such understandings; specific supreme court and other legal cases involving discrimination against Muslim women; and the author explains the significance of political theory, liberal feminist theory, and theories of power to her arguments in the book overall. Shehnaz Haqqani is an Assistant Professor of Religion at Mercer University. She earned her PhD in Islamic Studies with a focus on gender from the University of Texas at Austin in 2018. Her dissertation research explored questions of change and tradition, specifically in the context of gender and sexuality, in Islam. She can be reached at haqqani_s@mercer.edu. Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Falguni Sheth to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss her new book UNRULY WOMEN.
According to Professor Falguni Sheth despite the disapproval that "visibly" Muslim women face in the West, the U.S. does not ban the hijab or niqab. Nevertheless, it does find a way to manage assertive Muslim women. How so? Subtly and without outright confrontation: through the courts, bureaucratic processes and liberal discourses. Join us when Professor Sheth examines her book Unruly Women.

Ashdin and Dr. Falguni Shah, Founder of Radiance Clinic, discuss what exactly makes up 'healthy' skin.Oftentimes, it happens that even though we've had a good night's sleep, people come and ask us if we haven't slept well.
