We're back in the comforting waters of AIP this Saturday, with episode 63, The Brain Eaters, with Peach Dreams Milkshake IPA from our good friends at @textilebrews. A mysterious cone pops up outside the quiet town of Riverdale, IL, and at the same time animals are turning up dead, citizens go missing, then return acting very strange, and the government sends epic blowhard Walter K. Powers to suss out the doings. It's the Red Scare era, so the subtext of Communist Russia hangs over everything. We paired it with an IPA featuring peach, a touch of vanilla and lactose. It's peaches and cream in a can. Oh, and Leonard Nimoy (misspelled "Nemoy" in the credits) has a small role.  Thanks for listening! "The Transformers: The Movie" put us in a very strange position. Should we view the movie as children of the '80s, as adults in a 2020 pandemic, or through the eyes of Gen Z?  And that led to more questions: Why do Autobots turn into cars at the worst times? Is something creepy going on with Rodimus Prime and Daniel? Is Spike the worst dad in the galaxy?  Sometimes, a movie is just meant to be fun and sell toys. Sense of scale doesn't matter. Storylines are secondary, and the deaths of beloved characters just lead to really detailed dance scenes. "The Transformers: The Movie" had everything: a puckering space butthole, dozens of named characters that basically looked the same, a kick-ass butt-rock soundtrack, Orson Welles, Leonard Nemoy, Judd Nelson, Frank Welker, Robert Stack, Scatman Crothers, and the Micro Machines Man. As the theme song goes, this one was more than meets the eye. Just when you thought we had covered all the '80s space classics: "E.T.," "The Empire Strikes Back," "The Last Starfighter," and "The Thing," listener John Clyburn takes the podcast where no Shat has gone before with "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Star Trek II widely is considered the best "Star Trek" movie ever made, and "Shat The Movies" certainly recognizes why: a chesty Ricardo Montalban, a young Kirstie Alley, and a surprise death that came years before "Game of Thrones" decided anyone was fair game. But look closer, and you'll see a few cut corners, a few plot holes, and one totally disgusting reason to sleep with cotton balls in your ears. Why do the sets look so cheap in a post-Star Wars era? Why are the deaths to melodramatic? And why doesn't anyone at Star Fleet come up with better security protocols than sending your admiral down to check things out? If you like nerdy commentary, this is the episode for you. Upon arrival in San Francisco, they're bummed to learn that the whales were released under the cover of darkness and were more than likely killed by poachers as their tracking signal was lost. After being unable to tour the USS Enterprise because of a Soviet security breach, they decide to see their favorite punk band who just happens to be performing that night. Upon finding out that the lead singer has been neck-pinched into a coma, the two call it a day and drive home. Because there's nothing else to do in San Francisco...right?
