The Hudson River, valley, and related north-south waterworks all the way up to Montreal would, instead of staying firmly in Yankee control, prove to be a heavily contested corridor until literally the last day of the Revolutionary War.All of which to say is, EVERY day is a Semiquincentennial day in the year of our Lord 2026, and I am absolutely here for learning and sharing weird & wonderful things about our 250th.To that end, I'm delighted to introduce a new miniseries-within-the-pod, called The Revolutionaries, in which I'll be yakking with historians, podcasters, and other oddballs to tell us some crazy, misunderstood, and lesser-known stories about our awesome if not exactly crystal-pure revolutionary past. The idea is not only to learn new (and fun!) history, but also pick away a bit at the historiography – why some important characters and stories get forgotten; and how even the hagiographic celebrations of various Founders flatten the far more captivating and complicating detail.What better historian to kick us off than none other than Charles C. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) called the scandal, “arguably worse than Watergate.”  They also discuss Attorney General Pam Bondi's appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee today. And they talk about the second anniversary of the October 7th massacre in Israel, where Hamas murdered more than 1200 people, including 46 Americans and took 254 hostages. Indirect talks between Hamas and Israel aimed at ending the war in Gaza resumed today in Egypt. They also discuss whether Jay Jones, Democratic candidate for attorney general in Virginia, can survive criticism of his text messages and phone conversations from 2022 where he said the Republican Speaker of the House of Delegates deserved “two bullets to the head” and wished death upon the Speaker's children. Virginia Democrats, including both U.S. Senators and gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger, are standing by Jones and have not asked him to withdraw from the race. And finally, RCP White House correspondent Phil Wegmann joins the guys to talk about his recent RCP article on revelations that in a highly unusual move, the CIA suppressed an internal report on Ukraine in 2016 that would have proven embarrassing to then-Vice President Joe Biden, at the request of Biden's then national security advisor. [00:02:16] Federico started writing image processing programs in high school and discovered GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and began contributing plugins. Encouraged by positive feedback, he continued developing filters and building community resources. [00:10:20] The proprietary Motif GUI toolkit used by GIMP prompted the creation of GTK (GIMP Toolkit), a free alternative. GTK was split from GIMP and became a foundation for GNOME. Miguel de Icaza learned about modular component design from Microsoft and brought those ideas to the GNOME team. [00:14:48] Federico explains KDE was already launched but used the non-free Qt toolkit and GNOME was created as a fully free alternative using GTK.
