Today I talked with one of my favourite people; coach and personal mentor Nick Tumminello. Nick is one of the best trainers out there and is world class educator to trainers around the world. He is the Editor-In-Chief for the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) Personal Training Quarterly Journal. In 2015 he was inducted into the Personal Trainer Hall of Fame and in 2016 he won NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year and won PCTD's best fitness article on the internet. Nick is the author of 3 books and designed and sells NT Loop Bands. These are excellent fitness tools, particularly useful for home-based training. I hope you enjoy Nick's pearls of wisdom in this interview.Nick and I talk about all things exercise. While we all know the reasons we should be exercising, Nick explains some of the less known and discussed benefits that he believes are very important. These include making a commitment to yourself and your health, self-control and stress release. He explains how three different personality types respond to different kinds of motivation. It's important to understand our internal drivers so we can choose the style of exercise that suits us best. Nick talks about starting exercise as a beginner and why keeping goals real in terms of commitment and outside factors is the key to long-term success. It's better to have a lower frequency and volume of exercise and be consistent over time, than over-reach and then give up altogether. We finish by talking about the importance of diet in improving our body composition as well as how the lack of sleep and other stress hinders fat loss. Everyone knows what they need to do, the question is why aren't we doing it? Nick emphasizes the importance of making small sustainable changes and “abandon perfect”.You can find Nick at:http://nicktumminello.comFacebookNT Loop BandNick's books: Strength Training for Fat Loss; Building Muscle for Performance and Speed; Your Workout Perfected.Link to the article mentioned in the video:If you enjoyed this podcast, please subscribe, like and share. On this episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, Nick Tumminello joins me to discuss exercise prescription. Nick Tumminello is the 2016 NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year, and the Editor-in-chief of the NSCA Personal Training Quarterly journal. He's the author of three books: Building Muscle and Performance, StrengthTraining for Fat Loss, and Your Workout PERFECTED. He's been a trainer for over 20 years, is the former strength coach for team Ground Control MMA and has trained professional athletes in field, court, combat and physique sports. In this episode, we discuss: -How to apply the 4 principles of strength and conditioning to program design -Progressive and regressive load management -Why the Socratic Method should be used when discussing training philosophies -Nick’s approach to new fitness fads -And so much more! Nick has found that trainers train their clients with trendy methods and neglect to tailor a program to meet the clients’ unique goals. When designing a program, Nick stresses, “The approach is determined by the goal… It’s not determined by my bias as a trainer or my favorite pet exercise.” A client must always be the driver of their own success, but Nick sees an important role for strength and conditioning coaches to enable their client’s full potential. He believes, “A facilitator gives people what they need to achieve what they want.” A solid training and rehab regime is built on adhering to these four principles: goal specificity, individuality, progressive overload and variability. Nick has found that, “If you focus your training or your rehabilitation approaches on principles and you go from principles up not methods down, your training or your rehab approach will never go out of date.” Nick’s experience with members of the health and fitness community has led him to believe that an open approach to communication rather than a divisive or pedagogical one will lead to more success in promoting your message. Nick advises, “Ask more questions and genuinely listen.” For more information on Nick: “A bit of an outsider…” That’s how Nick Tumminello describes himself in the fitness industry. He’s an independent thinker who avoids falling in line with the crowd. His goal is to provide practical solutions that deliver specific results. Nick’s hybrid approach to training allows him to leverage the tools, knowledge and skills of many disciplines and methods to help his clients and to educate other trainers how to deliver results. As early as his teenage years Nick knew that he wanted to be a trainer. His early influence came from his mother, growing up in a gym watching her prepare for bodybuilding competitions. She’ll tell you that “Nick grew up on iron and sweat.” As a way to connect Nick and his mother attended fitness events and conferences from the time he was 16 years old. Personal training is the only ‘real job’ nick’s ever known. But, his story isn’t common. Not being one to fall in line with the crowd Nick never attended college or got a degree. He graduated high school as an average student. He worked hard to accumulate a lot of on the job experience and despite his distaste for structured education Nick was very interested in learning. After being fired from his first two personal training jobs due to his independent thinking and lack of needing to ‘fit in’ he went off on his own to start a business. Training and fitness aren’t a hobby to Nick. This is a profession that he’s very passionate about. It would be easy to confuse Nick as a ‘science guy’ due to his ability to challenge thoughts and ideas, the way he respects the scientific process and critical thinking. However, he’s most excited by the application and end results that the information he learns and the ideas he creates can produce. “Studies and research are great, but if there is no practical application there is no need” Nick’s approach to many things can be described in three words… Hustle and Muscle. This is applied in training, business and intellectually for Nick. On this week’s quick fit tip I talk about the fitness industry and disruption; more specifically what that means for you the average fitness consumer. Once an established business or industry becomes complacent it is ripe for disruption. From one point of view disruption is essential for long-term success; as businesses become stagnant and rest on their laurels they lose the innovative drive that helped them to succeed and grow in the first place. Netflix disrupted video rental and changed the way we view content; Uber and Lyft have changed the way we take cars and no matter how you feel about him Donald Trump is definitely disrupting the way we view politicians. In the fitness industry the current model for joining a health club is to entice people into a facility and get them to sign a year contract on the first visit. The rampant proliferation of boutique fitness studios has definitely disrupted the status quo and is forcing health clubs to evolve their existing business model. Disruption can cause much needed change in an industry; it can push people beyond their comfort levels to do new things or adapt to a new style or system of business; on today's Quick Fit Tip I discuss disruptive forces in the fitness industry and what that means for you - the fitness consumer. www.petemccallfitness.com pete@petemccallfitness.com Twitter: @PeteMc_fitness Instagram: @PeteMcCall_fitness In this episode I mention Nick Tumminello, you can reach his website here.

Training: Nick’s hybrid, mixed approach to training allows for the possibility that you can look great and perform great at the same time with a calculated and specific approach to training. In this interview with the trainer of trainers, Nick Tumminello, Nick discusses: How he got the title “trainer of trainers” How do we speed up the process of getting better at what we do What is the role of the trainer? No matter how old you are, strength training can help you get results! On this episode of All About Fitness I speak with Nick Tumminello about how strength training can help you reach a variety of your fitness goals. Nick is a personal trainer, strength coach and educator who was recognized as the Personal Trainer of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Nick is an expert in strength training and is a frequent contributor to publications such as Men’s Health, T-Nation and Bodybuilding.com. In addition, he travels around the world to teach personal trainers how to be more successful. Our conversation today focuses on the benefits of strength training for weight loss, the subject of one of Nick’s books, we also talk about a variety of topics related to working out in general and strength training in particular. in a field where a number of self-professed ‘experts’ claim to have the secret to success or promote workouts with little-to-no scientific validity it’s good to know that there are professionals like Nick who take the time to do the research so that when they dispense advice it is based only on the known facts about how the body adapts to exercise. Nick and I have gotten to know one another at various fitness conferences and meetings, at one point in our conversation I refer to Nick’s approach to fitness as ‘basic’ and I mean that as a compliment. Workout programs do not need to be overly complicated or use a variety of exercises better suited for an acrobatic routine to be effective. Knowing how to design a progressively challenging workout that applies the appropriate amount of stimulus to the body and how to properly recover from the workout so the body experiences the desired adaptations are two of the most important components of any exercise program. If you enjoy pushing iron or want to know the most effective things you should be doing in the gym you’ll get a lot out of today’s episode. Nick's books: Strength Training for Fat Loss and Building Muscle and Performance are must-have's for anyone interested in getting results from strength training.
