I am delighted to welcome this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Tosh Junior and George Hodges, owners of GNT Travel Pros, a Dream Vacations franchise, where they work full-time as travel advisors. During their very busy stint as relatively new travel advisors—they went through TA training in the same class as Cheryl, Shornay, and me in late-2024—they took the time to celebrate George's 70th birthday with a spectacular combination land and sea vacation so grand I had to invite my colleagues on The Joy of Cruising Podcast to talk about it. Tosh spent 30 years as a corporate IT executive, traveling the world for GE, Citrix, Atlassian, and McDonald's Corporation, among others. A Chicago native and University of Illinois graduate, he's called Fort Lauderdale home for the past 13 years. His credentials read like an operations manual — PMP, ITIL, ISO, Certified ScrumMaster, LEAN Six Sigma Black Belt, and an MBA — and he's since added a Certified Travel Advisor designation and ACC accreditation with CLIA. The through-line between the two careers is the same: complex logistics, handled so completely that the person on the receiving end never has to think about them. 30 years of leading teams also taught him the part no certification covers, which is that the job is service. George, Tosh's partner, brings the other half of the equation. After 30 years in interior design and sales at Crate & Barrel, he retired with an eye for how a space is supposed to feel and a career's worth of practice reading what people want before they've said it out loud.  They don't plan trips from a desk. In the past year alone, they've sailed more than 15 cruises across nearly every major line — Icon of the Seas, Celebrity Ascent and Apex, Norwegian Luna, Star Princess, MSC World America, Carnival Celebration, Virgin's Scarlet Lady, and an Azamara sailing through the Mediterranean, to name a few. A custody ruling is where this entire case starts. A judge told Wendi Adelson she couldn't move her two sons away from their father, FSU law professor Dan Markel. Prosecutors say Wendi's mother, Donna Adelson, offered Markel a million dollars to undo that ruling. He said no. What happened next: two men drove five hours from Miami in a rented Prius and shot Markel twice in the head in his own garage, hours after he'd dropped his sons at preschool and gone to the gym. He never made it out of his car. He was 41. Investigators traced the payment for the hit through a family dental office near Fort Lauderdale — 44 checks signed by Donna herself, $138,000 funneled through a woman who never worked a day at the practice, and a toll transponder receipt logging every mile the killers drove. That office belonged to Donna's son, Charlie Adelson, a periodontist making three million a year from a family with more than eight million in combined accounts. Prosecutors say Charlie orchestrated his former brother-in-law's murder and funneled the payments through his own practice, with his mother washing the cash before handing it off. At trial, Charlie told the jury he was the true victim — extorted by the hitmen, forced to pay them in installments. Prosecutor Georgia Cappleman asked him one question about sending his girlfriend to collect an extortion payment. The jury took three hours to convict. Dan Markel's mother-in-law Donna Adelson allegedly offered him a million dollars to let her daughter and grandchildren relocate to South Florida. He refused. A judge had already denied the move. Prosecutors say the family that couldn't accept "no" from a courtroom or a checkbook turned to two hitmen from Miami instead.Markel was an FSU law professor, 41 years old, shot twice in the head in his Tallahassee garage on July 18, 2014 — the same morning his ex-wife had a Geek Squad technician at her house repairing the TV her brother gave her because it was "cheaper than hiring a hitman." The killers were traced through a toll transponder on a rental car in a city without toll roads. The money trail led to the Adelson dental practice near Fort Lauderdale — 44 checks signed by Donna to a woman who never worked there, $138,000 in documented payments.The FBI caught Charlie Adelson on tape at a Miami Beach restaurant in 2016 discussing the entire arrangement. When investigators bumped Donna with the killers' names, she called Charlie — three times. Five people are now serving prison sentences for the conspiracy. And Pan Pacs was arguably her weakest overall competition of the year. In 2026, Gretchen made the choice to travel and race fast everywhere: Beijing, Rome, Fort Lauderdale, U.S. Nationals and Pan Pacs. She noted that she took for granted all the racing she did as an NCAA star, and she wanted that experience back. The results were impressive, but Gretchen is candid that she was not satisfied with her times at Pan Pacs. She talks through that frustration and explains how she evaluates a meet where the medal count says one thing but her own expectations say something else.

Join us as Gary and Matt Fernando share all about a very special family vacation aboard the Disney Destiny. This four-night sailing out of Fort Lauderdale marked the first time Gary, Matt, and their parents had all cruised together, and there was plenty to celebrate. Gary, Matt, and their dad were each celebrating milestone birthdays of 40, 45, and 75. Their wives joined them for the trip, along with Matt's young daughter, making this a true family celebration. This was also Matt's first Disney Cruise, and he shares his impressions of the Destiny and the experience of cruising with Disney for the first time. Before the ship even set sail, the family took advantage of the open house at the kids clubs, which gives parents and families a chance to explore the spaces together. Matt was so impressed with the clubs that he jokes he was the one who did not want to leave. Gary and Matt talk about the many activities available onboard and how they spent their time during the four-night cruise. Gary had purchased a spa package that included access to the Rainforest Room, while Matt found plenty to explore throughout the ship. They also discuss the pirates and villains theming found throughout the Destiny and some of the details that make the ship unique. Of course, food is always an important part of a Disney Cruise, and Gary and Matt share their experiences with the restaurants, room service, drinks, and other dining options onboard. One particular favorite was the Mickey Churro Waffles at breakfast, which earned enthusiastic reviews from both of them. When the ship arrived in Nassau, Gary and his wife headed to Blue Lagoon Island for a dolphin encounter experience. Gary shares what the excursion was like and some of the highlights from their day. Later in the episode, Gary and Matt also talk about their visit to Castaway Cay and how each of them chose to spend their time on Disney's private island. There was also an important mission aboard the Destiny. Gary and Matt were second in line when the ship's stores opened, determined to track down the elusive Evie the Towel Animal Plush. Despite their excellent position in line and their best efforts, Evie did not make the trip home with them. Matt also talks about the value of purchasing the onboard photo package and highly recommends it for families who want to make sure those special moments from their cruise are captured. In this episode of Unfiltered Waters, Elizabeth Beisel and Todd Anderson fill in for Katie Hoff, about a week out from giving birth to her daughter, and sit down with Emma Weyant ahead of the Pan Pacific Championships. It has been a strange year for her: a full training block with no Olympic Trials to break it up, and one of the hardest, most rewarding stretches of her career. So what does it take to trust a year of work you haven't gotten to prove yet?Emma walks through the overhaul that has reshaped her stroke work: heavier backstroke sets on power days, sometimes pulling backstroke with buckets while everyone else swims freestyle, a callback to band sets from her club days. Adding Pilates to dryland has helped her mobility and eased some hip issues. At Pan Pacs she's swimming the 400 free and 200 IM, training the 400 free daily alongside Katie Ledecky after a 4:07 at Fort Lauderdale. Todd asks her to name the biggest change, and backstroke is the answer without hesitation.Along the way, the conversation goes places most swim interviews don't: her walkout song pick of Getaway Car by Taylor Swift, a Shake Shack double cheeseburger with bacon as her cheat meal, a deep dive into hair care science that has her dreaming up a chlorine specific product line, and getting talked into her first spray tan by Katie Ledecky. She admits she still hasn't gotten the TikTok color analysis everyone keeps pushing her toward, joking she can never tell gold from silver when the trend hits her feed.Underneath the training talk is a real reckoning with what comes next. Emma graduated in August, studied for the LSAT, did well, then chose to push law school back a year rather than close the door on swimming. She's leaning into a word her coach repeats to her, courage, separating it from confidence: one is doing something bold and unexpected, the other comes from consistency and trust. She traces that shift to a breakthrough race in Fort Lauderdale a year ago, when she stopped chasing her old self and started building someone new. Joel “Jay-Ray” Anderson is a drummer that was recently touring with The Wiz.I caught up with him mid-tour. We talked about growing up in a musical family in Fort Lauderdale, learning drums from YouTube and his oldest brother, coming up through the Dillard High School drumline, studying music at Broward College and Florida Memorial University, landing his first tour (Pretty Woman) the week after graduation, and transitioning to The Wiz through a network built one relationship at a time. We got into gospel drumming history, drumline battles, a month spent touring Japan, and why networking, not just chops, is what actually opens doors.Jay-Ray comes from a house full of musicians. His father plays guitar and sings; his oldest brother plays drums and keys; another brother sings, plays drums, and plays saxophone; and a third brother plays bass, guitar, and keys while producing. Jay-Ray's own introduction to the drums came at six years old, when his oldest brother sat him down in front of a kit for the first time. By twelve, he had his own Sonor drum set, a gift from that same brother, and was already teaching himself by copying drumming videos on YouTube.Jay-Ray attended Dillard Center for the Arts, where he played in two jazz bands, marched snare in the wind orchestra and drumline, and got pulled onto snare drum as a freshman after impressing section leader Javon with a string of paradiddles. He talks about the discipline instilled by band directors Christopher Dorsey and Dr. Sheldon McClain, learning traditional grip for the first time, and the intensity of real drumline battles.Jay-Ray studied at Broward College (Associate's in Music Performance) before transferring to Florida Memorial University for his bachelor's degree, where he played under percussion director Taurus Lovely, a 25-year Broadway touring veteran (including Tina Turner: The Musical) who would later become the person who got Jay-Ray his first tour. Jay-Ray's first trip to New York came in 2018, when Dillard's jazz band won the Essentially Ellington competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the same trip where he first saw a Broadway show, Ain't Too Proud.The day after Jay-Ray graduated from Florida Memorial in May 2023, Taurus Lovely called with an audition opportunity for the Pretty Woman national tour. Jay-Ray recorded four songs from the show, landed the gig, and was in rehearsals in Syracuse, New York within months. He talks candidly about the learning curve of running click tracks and Ableton on the road, getting walked through the system by original drummer Kevin Maynard, and the parts of touring nobody warns you about, like setting up and breaking down your own kit on travel days. Over roughly two years with the show, he toured extensively across the U.S. and spent a month performing in Japan (Shinjuku, Tachikawa, Kyoto, and Osaka).Jay-Ray's move to The Wiz came through his network: Sammy Merandino and Quentin “Q” Robinson recommended him, and MD Michael Aarons brought him in. Jay-Ray left Pretty Woman in Wichita and, within a week, was in New York starting rehearsals, spending his off-hours studying original drummer Trevor Holder's book and comparing the Broadway cast recording to the touring arrangement. He also shares how he first met Q Robinson years earlier, showing up at Hamilton's closing show in Fort Lauderdale just to introduce himself.Asked what he'd tell a high school or college drummer chasing a career like his, Jay-Ray's answer is simple: networking. Jason Marous was a 36-year-old construction estimator from Ohio who was shot and killed on January 6, 2023, while sitting in his parked vehicle outside his apartment complex in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Surveillance footage captured a heavily disguised individual walking in the immediate area at the exact time of the shooting. The person was wearing a beanie, long sleeves, pants, a full face mask, and distinctive reflective running shoes.
