You might remember the Jesuits of Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministry. They have a podcast that we've aired episodes of on this very channel. Every week for ten seasons now, Fr. Brian Strassburger the director of the ministry, and Joe Nolla, a Jesuit regent, have been dropping us into their work, sharing with us stories from the US-Mexico border, helping us understand the nuances and lived reality of immigration policies and hosting an array of impressive guests who research, write about or work with immigrant communities. Well, today's a special episode: Joe Nolla is wrapping up regency and heading to Paris, France to begin theology studies—the next and final stage in Jesuit formation before ordination to the priesthood. So, Brian asked AMDG host Eric Clayton if he'd do a sort of exit interview for Joe as a bonus episode of the podcast. And now we're airing that episode here for you. It's a great conversation. Joe's reflections and experiences give insight into Jesuit formation, Jesuit ministry and the ongoing needs that Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministry is trying to meet in and around Brownsville, Texas. In this bonus episode, we are saying farewell to Joe Nolla, SJ, the co-host of The Jesuit Border Podcast for the last three years. In June, Joe is heading off to theology studies in Paris, France, to continue with his formation as a Jesuit in preparation for his ordination to the priesthood.In this episode, we bring on Eric Clayton, deputy director for communications at the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States and long-time editor of the podcast. Eric turns the questions on us, first by asking for some updates about what has happened on the border since Season 10 wrapped up in early April. Then he turns to Joe to get his reflections on his experience working on the U.S.-Mexico border for the last three years. Joe talks about the graces he has experienced, the way this ministry has shaped his formation, and the surprises he has encountered along the way. Both Brian and Joe share a range of stories, from accompanying people at rock bottom, to diaper leaks, and what it means “to be a gentleman” when you are served tuna salad. Of course, the episode wouldn't be complete without Joe answering the question he poses to all our guests. Albert Franch Sunyer is the chef and co-owner of Restaurant Nolla in Helsinki, Finland. Born in a small mining town in Catalonia in Spain, as a young student he left his biology studies behind, to explore his passion for cooking at Michelin-starred restaurants in Barcelona. As a pastry and dessert chef, he worked in Thailand and then moved to work at Helsinki's top restaurants. He and his two colleagues then opened Nolla, a pioneering restaurant in sustainable gastronomy, and the first zero-waste restaurant in the Nordics. In the podcast, we will hear about Albert Franch Sunyer's desire to serve great food without compromising zero-waste values and about his vision of the progressive changes that are needed in the restaurant industry. Iz zelenjavnih olupkov pripravljajo omake, kosti, neuporabne dele sadja in zelenjave, plutaste zamaške in papir pa predelajo v posebnem komposterju. Uporabljajo 70 let star jedilni pribor, kuharji in natakarji nosijo uniforme iz reciklirajočih se materialov, krožniki in skodelice so iz posebne biomase. While all of our communities face mental health challenges, Black communities often deal with more stigma and discrimination, and can receive compromised care. Negative attitudes and beliefs towards people who live with mental health conditions is pervasive within the U.S. and can be particularly strong within the Black community. One study showed that 63% of Black people believe that a mental health condition is a sign of personal weakness. This series, called My Brothers Keeper is highlighting some of the amazing African American Mental Health advocates who are breaking the stigma and encouraging others to take their pain and use it for greatness.
