First to the news that thousands of anti-racism protesters gathered in cities and towns across England last night. They were rallying in response to a week of anti-immigration rioting and racist violence, sparked by misinformation over the deadly stabbings in Southport on 29 July. Thousands of extra police officers had been deployed last night but the protests were largely peaceful with few serious incidents. Some of the largest gatherings were in north London, Brighton and Bristol. To discuss, Anita Rani is joined by Labour's Susan Dungworth, the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, and Aisha Gill, a Professor in Criminology, Head of the Centre for Gender and Violence Research at the University of Bristol. The British roots, blues and Americana rock sensation Elles Bailey is a real trailblazer: she's a mother, a label boss, an artist, a champion of women in music, and she has been inducted into the UKBlues Hall of Fame. She joins Anita to talk about her unique voice, her new album and to perform live in the studio.New figures released today suggest that children under two are present at 13% of police call outs to domestic abuse incidents in England, amounting to around 185,000 babies and toddlers. So what can the effect be on children of witnessing domestic abuse? And what can be done to overcome the trauma they could experience? We hear from Lauren Seager-Smith, CEO of the For Baby's Sake Trust and Dr Sheila Redfern, consultant clinical child and adolescent psychologist and Head of Family Trauma at Anna Freud, a world-leading mental health charity for children and families.New York Times bestselling author Abi Daré discusses her much-anticipated second novel, And So I Roar, which follows tenacious teenager Adunni and her fight for freedom in rural Nigeria.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Kirsty Starkey

This week the Northern Agenda podcast comes from the headquarters of the North East's Chronicle and Journal newspapers in the centre of Newcastle for a special mayoral hustings edition. In a month's time one of the five people speaking to Rob Parsons over the conference room table will be the new elected mayor of the North East. They'll have powers and funding - some £4.2bn over 30 years - to impact the lives of millions of people in a huge patch stretching from Berwick to Barnard Castle. So the stakes will be high when voters across Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland pick their preferred candidate - meaning there is all the more reason to know who they are and what they'll do if they get into power. Joining Rob Parsons for the hustings is Jamie Driscoll, the independent candidate who is currently mayor of the North of Tyne, university archivist Andrew Gray standing for the Green Party and Dr Aidan King, who works at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for the Liberal Democrats. Labour's candidate is Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness and for the Conservatives we have Northumberland County Councillor Guy Renner Thompson. Sunderland councillor Paul Donaghy, who is Reform UK's candidate, couldn't make it so has sent in a recorded message. Hear them set out how they'd approach the job and their position on the big issues that will likely matter to voters, including answers to questions sent in by Chronicle and Journal readers. Gavin Grey: 16-year-old boy arrested over 'deliberate' felling of a famous tree at Hadrian's Wall

A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday in northern England in connection with what authorities described as the “deliberate” felling of a famous tree that had stood for nearly 200 years next to the Roman landmark Hadrian's Wall. Thousands of visitors each year walk along Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that guarded the Roman Empire's northwestern frontier. Many have paused to admire and photograph the tree at Sycamore Gap, a beloved icon of the landscape that was made famous when it appeared in Kevin Costner's 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.” Photographs from the scene on early Thursday showed that the tree was cut down near the base of its trunk, with the rest of it lying on its side. Northumbria Police said the teen was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage. He was in police custody and assisting officers with their inquiries, the force said. “The tree is a world-renowned landmark and the vandalism has caused understandable shock and anger throughout the local community and beyond,” police said in a statement. “This is an incredibly sad day," police superintendent Kevin Waring said. “The tree was iconic to the North East and enjoyed by so many who live in or who have visited this region.” The Northumberland National Park authority asked the public not to visit the felled tree, which was voted English Tree of the Year in 2016. Alison Hawkins, who was walking on the Hadrian's Wall path, was one of the first people who saw the damage early Thursday. “It was a proper shock. It's basically the iconic picture that everyone wants to see," she said. “You can forgive nature doing it but you can't forgive that."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Northumbria Police's Claire Vandenbroecke and Charlotte Knill from the Force's Cyber Crime Unit have joined the North East LHS Team for a triple treat! We met Claire at the NELHS Ade Lovelace day and we wanted to invite the Nercuu back to tell us more about what they do. Claire and Charlotte usually deliver bespoke training to businesses, advising them on how to keep their systems secure, as well as working with young people with highly specialised digital skills and they've joined NELHS in a special three-part podcast to share their expertise. The series covers everything from why you should be using two-factor authentication on your apps, to how tricks and jokes adopted by gamers could see them falling foul of the law. Charlotte said: “CyberCrime is an area of policing which is constantly evolving and changing and it is on us as a Force to adapt and make sure our staff and officers have the relevant skills to deal with offences such as ransomware attacks and hacks to phishing scams and frauds as well as sexual offences like online exploitation. “Cybercrime is ultimately something we can't arrest our way out of, even if we had all the resources in the world. The best way we can tackle cybercrime is to prevent the offences from taking place in the first instance. “A large part of my role is working with young people and getting them to understand that cybercrime is not a victimless crime – an attack on a small business for example could be devastating and have serious consequences for the owner's livelihood. “Steering teenagers away from cybercrime and showing them the vast array of jobs in the industry is a simple but effective way of preventing them using their skills in an unethical and teaching them about the Computer Misuse Act. In Claire's world of Cyber Protect and Prepare, businesses, organisations and charities are being issued with practical advice to block unsolicited attempts to gain access. “A lot of what I cover in the podcast is what I'm sharing with businesses on a daily basis. They're really simple and straightforward tips from making sure your passwords are strong – we advise using three random words or a password generator which you can find online, to use two-factor authentication for your apps, as well as basic house-keeping like ensuring all your systems are up to date so no weaknesses can be exploited.” Follow Northumbria Police Northumbria Police | Facebook and @northumbriapol on Twitter For help and advice about cybercrime visit the North East Regional Cyber Crime Unit's website here: https://nerccu.police.uk/ To check your online security visit: https://haveibeenpwned.com/ How strong is your password - https://www.security.org/how-secure-is-my-password/ Cyber Essentials - https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberessentials/overview Police cyber alarm - https://cyberalarm.police.uk/ Microsoft Hafnium: https://www.microsoft.com/security/blog/2021/03/02/hafnium-targeting-exchange-servers/ The Ladies Hacking Society is here to support women in learning and expanding their technical cyber security skills. The Take Podcast UK boys are back with a new episodes, entitled “Talk The Talk!”. In a break from recent tradition, @dainesays and @Djillnessuk do away with the insta live format and go back to their roots; just a studio, microphones and good vibes. This week they are also joined by special guest and friend of the show Richard A, aka @aspiretogreatness. On the docket today, the boys review the widely talked about Channel Four programme, The Talk, in which famous members of the black community were interviewed about their experiences growing with racism. The boys share their own experiences and ask whether, in today's society, the parental talk in race is redundant or needed more than ever. Some time is given to the horrific footage of Northumbria Police forcibly Dr Abbassi from his terminally ill daughters bedside, so that her life support machine could be switched off. The boys discuss the mishandling of the incident and the public fallout which ensued. Other topics include the excellent Verzuz Battle between Rick Ross and 2 Chainz, aptly titled “The High Roller's Suite”. Lastly, @dainesays gives a big Quarantine Conundrum. A dilemma of gargantuan proportion for one man. Have a listen and let us know, What's Your Take! If you liked this episode, tell three friends. If you didn't, tell five more. The boys love what they do, but you, the audience, make it worthwhile! As always, like comment and share. It is a decade since Raoul Moat went on a shooting spree in Gateshead and Newcastle - in what was described as Britain's largest manhunt for 44 years. The former nightclub doorman shot and injured his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart; shot and killed her new partner Chris Brown and blinded police officer David Rathband, who later took his own life. Moat then went on the run across Northumberland, eventually shooting himself after being cornered in the village of Rothbury. 5 Live’s Rachel Burden speaks to Sue Sim, who as chief constable of Northumbria Police in 2010 led the manhunt for Moat. She says it "concerns" her that some people still see Moat as a "hero". Please note: this episode contains discussions of violence and suicide that some listeners may find disturbing. If you have been affected by issues raised in this podcast, there are a range of organisations and websites that can offer you advice and support. You can find them listed on the BBC's Actionline website at bbc.co.uk/actionline.

What do you say to your children if they ask, " Dad, what would happen to us if you were killed in your line of duty?" As a serving officer for Northumbria Police, Peter explained to his sons that one of the sources of help could come from Care Of Police Survivors (COPS). COPS is a UK registered charity dedicated to helping the families of police officers who have lost their lives on duty. Adam and Luke responded by writing a song to raise money for the charity. That song is now available for download from reputable sources. Peter, Luke and Adam told their story to Gary Burgham on The Saturday Breakfast Programme.
