The town hall was also be home to the National Music Centre, housed in the basement of the hall underneath the stage. While the redevelopment of the hall is funded by the council, the National Music Centre has been jointly funded by the NZ Symphony Orchestra, Victoria University, Wellington City Council and the government. While there, Nick spoke to Goldsmith and new NZSO chief executive Marc Feldman. LISTEN AND WATCH ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
An incredible, near-spiritual experience. That's how some concertgoers described the first Beyond Words concert at the Christchurch Town Hall last night, which saw the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra line up with both local and international performers. Described as a coming together of musical traditions from the East and West, the spellbinding show is part of five-year commemorations for the Christchurch terror attacks. Reporter Adam Burns was there.
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is in new territory this week with a collaborative programme to mark the fifth anniversary of the mosque attacks in Christchurch in which 51 people were murdered. The centrepiece of Beyond Words is called Ahlan wa Sahlan, and incorporates an Arabic welcome which lets people know they are in a place where they belong. The concert will be performed once each in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, beginning in Christchurch Thursday night. Conductor Fawzi Haimor and NZSO's artistic manager Shona Jaunas spoke to Corin Dann.

In what she believes to be a first for Aotearoa, violinist Anne Loeser is about to play the entire cycle of Heinrich Biber's 17th century Rosary Sonatas for violin and continuo.. It's such a marathon, she'll be playing it over three evenings. Anne is a first violinist in the NZSO, but she also plays baroque violin, which is what she'll be using for the marathon event. Two other musicians will be performing with Anne and she'll also need a dedicated violin-tech backstage, because every sonata demands that the violin be re-tuned and even mistuned. Lynn Freeman asked Anne why playing the full cycle is such a daunting prospect for a violinist: The performance of Heinrich Biber's Rosary Sonatas for violin and continuo at St Mary's of the Angels in Wellington, starts on Wednesday, continuing on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will perform seven concerts starting this week, each before an audience numbering no more than 100. Nobody knows exactly what the ensemble will be playing or even how many players there will be, but that didn't stop all the tickets getting snapped up within 24 hours. The NZSO came up for its slightly mysterious concept after having to can a North Island tour this month because of Omicron. But the players still wanted to play, says NZSO director Kirsten Mason, and the fans definitely still want to listen. She spoke to Corin Dann.
“I have no concept of what it is like to be involved in war. I can only experience it through their related experience. We have letters from them, very very dry day-to-day nuts and bolts, an insight into how boring it is for them in the trenches waiting and waiting and waiting for days. And then all of a sudden – WHAM !! Everything happens and people start dying. It's unimaginable.”In 1917, three New Zealand boys — brothers — were sent to the western front to fight in World War I. They never came home. They died in the Chemin des Dames, a place of legend, now a place of unimaginable horror carved into trenches, where infantry from both sides sheltered in caves. Their names were Charles, Vince, and Frank, and they were the great-great-uncles of Gareth Farr, composer, and percussionist. When former Adam International Cello Competition winner Sébastien Hurtaud approached Gareth with a proposal he couldn't resist (“I'll be your Rostropovich, and you can be my Shostakovich”), Gareth said, “You're on!”. The result is Cello Concerto ‘Chemin des Dames', a work that is as much about the men who died fighting WWI as it is about the women who suffered unbearably while looking after the home front.Host: Charlotte WilsonGuest: Gareth FarrLinks & ResourcesMore details on the composer and the associated work are here.Link to the film of Chemin de Dames This episode was brought to you by SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music.Production teamExecutive Producer: Diana MarshProducer: Charlotte WilsonSound Engineer: Phil BrownleeSpecial thanks to Rubicon for providing the audio of Chemin des Dames performed by Sébastien Hurtaud and the NZSO.This podcast is supported by funding from The Stout Trust.--Moments in timeA composer's response to critical moments in time: The moments when time pivots and history changes course. Among the notable arts winners from this week's budget announcement is the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. It's getting an extra $3.2 million to tide it over the next two years. The orchestra is also in the midst of changing the funding model it's had for years, ahead of celebrations for its 75th anniversary in 2022. The Royal New Zealand Ballet company also received more money in the budget, around $1.15 million. Both sums are on top of the government's lifeline post-Covid-19 lockdown funds. Lynn Freeman asks the NZSO's Chief Executive Peter Biggs if the budget allocation of extra funds is what they'd asked the government for.
Split Enz, Tami Neilson, The Phoenix Foundation and Teeks - all Kiwi acts who've been invited to reimagine their songs with a full orchestra. Now it's the rather unlikely turn of pop superstar Benee, who can claim two and a half billion streams around the world, eight music awards and sell-out shows everywhere she goes. So imagine Benee singing "Glitter", "Soaked" and "Supalonely":in front of not just her own band but also a 66 piece orchestra. Then.imagine familiar songs performed in entirely different genres - 90s trip hop perhaps, or even as a Bond theme. Composer Claire Cowan has come up with the new arrangements for the 21 year old singer songwriter who'll perform with the NZSO in Wellington and the APO in Auckland. Lynn Freeman talks with Claire and Benee, who says the offer took her completely by surprise: The NZSO concerts will be in late July, while Benee performs with the APO in September.

More important - to us at any rate - is that the in-demand conductor was born and bred in Wellington New Zealand. Here she is conducting Lilburn's Overture Aotearoa. After concerts were cancelled leading to 5 months of enforced semi-isolation in the US where she's based, Gemma's back here to work with several orchestras, including the NZSO.

More than 2,000 people will be treated to a suite from Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier at a performance by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Wellington tonight. The NZSO will be the envy of the musical world as it plays what's thought to be the first to a live audience in a full concert hall since the pandemic began. Chair of the NZSO board, Laurence Kubiak, speaks to Gyles Beckford.
While arts organisations welcome the news of Alert Level 2, the realities mean many are still hamstrung. With 90 members of the Symphony Orchestra on stage, that would mean to not go over the limitations of 100 people at a gathering, the audience couldn't be bigger than 10. Peter Biggs is interim chief executive of the NZSO.

When I heard from Rice University bass professor Tim Pitts that his former student Alanna Jones had won a spot in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, I immediately dropped her a line and asked if she’d chat about this recent audition for the podcast. She accepted, and we had a great talk, not only about the NZSO audition but also about her journey from Green Bay, Wisconsin to New Zealand, her time studying with Scott Pingel at the San Francisco Conservatory, life as a member of the Rice University bass studio, her time in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship program. We also dig into Alanna’s practice routines, what it’s like auditioning in Australia and New Zealand, how she managed herself in the days and weeks approaching an audition, and much more. This was a great conversation, and I’m looking forward to watching Alanna’s career continue to unfold over the coming years!
