Amazing AI Plc (AQSE:AAI) CEO and founder Paul Mathieson talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's unique approach to digital asset investment and its dual business model rooted in US consumer lending. Mathieson explained that Amazing AI continues to operate a licensed lending business across six US states. The company has expanded its model by launching a digital asset treasury strategy that uses advanced options trading. Rather than directly purchasing Bitcoin, the company uses call and put options to gain leveraged exposure—up to 100 times—to a basket of digital assets including Ethereum, XRP, Solana and potentially gold-linked and AI-based tokens like Tal. “We're not just reliant on the performance of Bitcoin. We have a strategy that makes money if it goes down or up,” Mathieson said. He described Amazing AI's strategy as “Treasury 3.0”, which focuses on diversification and institutional-level trading mechanics, contrasting with other companies that simply buy and hold crypto. The company is also looking to acquire undervalued treasury businesses that can no longer meet new stock exchange rules, integrating those assets into its balanced model of lending and digital asset trading. Mathieson added that Amazing AI would deploy capital over the next two months using a dollar-cost averaging approach to take advantage of current market conditions. Zak's Traders Cafe sat down with Paul Mathieson, CEO of Amazing AI, to unpack a fresh take on corporate crypto exposure — a strategy Paul describes not just as "Bitcoin treasury 2.0" but as crypto treasury 3.0. After a turbulent few months for London-listed companies that rushed to add Bitcoin to their balance sheets, Paul and I discussed why the old model is breaking down and how his team plans to approach things differently: more sophisticated, more diversified, and better protected. Why the Bitcoin Treasury 1.0 model is fading Earlier this year many companies followed a simple playbook: raise equity, buy Bitcoin, and hold it on the balance sheet. That headline-friendly approach produced big share price moves in May–July, but many of those gains have since evaporated — some names are down as much as 80% from their peaks. Investors and markets reacted; hype cooled. As Paul put it, the straightforward buy-and-hold crypto treasury is "pretty simple" and increasingly seen as outdated. The problem with buy-and-hold Heavy dilution: companies raising repeatedly to buy more crypto. Binary exposure: full directional risk to a single asset like Bitcoin. Market expectation vs operational reality: investors began pricing in the flaws once the euphoria passed. Introducing Crypto Treasury 3.0: a different philosophy Paul argues Amazing AI is moving beyond the one-dimensional treasury model by combining derivatives expertise, diversification across crypto assets, active risk management, and a profitable underlying business to fund the strategy. As Paul told me: "I don't think it's just crypto treasury 2.0. I think it's actually 3.0. We are going beyond the basic to diversify... and more importantly managing the exposure, not just sitting there." — Paul MathiesonKey pillars of the approach: Derivatives-based exposure: using long-dated options and futures to gain leveraged crypto exposure while defining downside risk. Diversification: exposure spread across multiple crypto assets rather than a single-asset bet. Active management: protective hedges and re-protection on the way up to lock in gains. Revenue backing: a core U.S. lending business generating strong cash flows to fund option premiums and operations. Opportunistic M&A: potential acquisitions of failed "crypto 1.0" players to consolidate and repurpose assets. How the derivatives strategy works — plain English Paul drew on decades of funds management and investment banking experience to adopt option structures that can deliver asymmetric returns. The approach is not simply selling covered calls (income-focused), but more like a strangle strategy combined with targeted protection. Strangle-like positions: buying combinations of calls and puts to profit from large moves either up or down. The structure benefits from volatility and large directional moves. Defined downside: losses are limited to the premiums paid for options, rather than the full exposure of owning the underlying crypto outright. Leverage potential: relatively small cash outlay on options can create very large notional exposure (Paul discussed scenarios of up to 100x notional exposure in upside cases), while premium cost caps the downside. Paul emphasised that the firm is comfortable paying option premiums because Amazing AI has a core business able to generate predictable revenue. That changes the math: instead of raising equity constantly to buy more crypto, small capital raises can create sizable market exposure via derivatives. Backtest results and credibility Paul shared that he backtested his strategy over two decades and, in his words, it "never lost money" and averaged around 500% returns historically, with larger gains on upside moves. He also said the approach underpins the holdings of long-term shareholders in the company today. While past performance and backtests are not guarantees, the claim signals the firm has applied a rigorous, experience-led framework rather than relying on speculation alone. Differences from covered-call or simple buy-and-hold strategies When I asked whether the approach is similar to covered-call income strategies, Paul was clear: it's materially different. Covered calls generate income by selling upside, moderating upside participation in exchange for premiums. Amazing AI's method is designed to benefit from significant directional moves while protecting capital via paid protection. Covered call = sell upside to earn premium, capped upside. Strangle/option approach = pay premium for asymmetric exposure and defined loss, large upside potential if volatility or direction materialises. Operational advantages: less dilution, more optionality One of the practical benefits Paul highlighted is capital efficiency. Because option premiums are significantly smaller than buying the underlying outright, Amazing AI can achieve large crypto exposures from comparatively modest raises. Paul also noted he remains the major shareholder and is not interested in frequent dilution, aligning management incentives with long-term shareholders. Additional operational levers include: Using revenues from a U.S. lending arm (quoted rate: 59.9% on loans) to fund premium payments and operations. Rolling and re-protecting positions as markets move to lock in gains and manage risk. Purchasing distressed "crypto 1.0" assets or companies and converting their strategy to the new model. Risk considerations and why diversification matters Paul stressed that while he believes in crypto, prudent risk management matters. He mentioned edge-case risks — for example, quantum attacks or specific vulnerabilities in mining — as reasons to diversify beyond Bitcoin alone. The goal is to construct a portfolio where only a subset of holdings needs to perform for the strategy to succeed. In short: rather than bet everything on a single outcome (Bitcoin to infinity or to zero), the approach seeks multiple asymmetric bets and defined downside exposure. What to watch next Over the coming months investors should watch how Amazing AI implements the strategy: the mix of option structures used, the degree of leverage taken, how the company re-protects gains as markets rise, and whether opportunistic acquisitions materialise. Also worth monitoring will be capital raises and how management balances funding the strategy with shareholder dilution. Conclusion The landscape for corporate crypto treasuries has shifted. Simple buy-and-hold has shown vulnerabilities in a choppy market. Amazing AI's approach, as explained by Paul Mathieson, blends derivatives expertise, diversification, active hedging, and an operating business that helps fund premiums — an attempt to deliver asymmetric upside while capping downside. If you're interested in corporate crypto strategies or the evolving ways companies are gaining exposure to digital assets, this is a model worth watching: it's about turning raw crypto exposure into a more manageable, capital-efficient, and actively managed program. Cinematographer John Mathieson, BSC began his career shooting music videos for bands like Nirvana and Hole, moving into documentaries and commercials before working in feature films. Rather than going to film school, he joined friends who formed a film collective and everyone learned from each other. Director Ridley Scott saw his work on the movie, Plunkett & Macleane, and approached him to shoot Gladiator. “I never thought I'd be the sword and sandals guy,” says John. “I was doing grunge videos!” John was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Gladiator. For Gladiator II, John embraced the advancements in visual effects technology, which allowed for more efficient and creative storytelling. While the film was shot digitally, his approach to cinematography remained similar to the first film. “We didn't do much different with the cameras or the language of the story,” he says, “but parts of the filmmaking process have gotten faster and easier. We shot on digital in about half the time it took to shoot Gladiator.” John focused on creating a visually striking world in Gladiator II, inspired by historical paintings and the contrasting environments of Rome and the desert. He wanted high contrast lighting, especially in the desert scenes at the beginning of the film and in the gladiator arena so that it looked dusty, hot, and overexposed. In contrast, the light inside the Roman homes is warmer and richer. John describes it as, “Everything's got dust and then Rome is colorful, opulent- grapes, wine, peacock greens, paisleys, fabrics, all that kind of decadence-it's camp, it's vulgar, it's Vegas 1970.” When choosing projects, John prioritizes scripts that resonate with him and directors who can effectively guide the filmmaking process. He enjoys exploring and working in different film genres. “I like to think I don't have a style, you know, that I can adapt to what is on the page or what is important,” he says. Episode #286: “Some people during the so-called transition, people in Yangon, were like, 'The military is changing!' Like, no, they're not; they're changing the way they talk to you, to elites, but they're not changing on the ground. And if you spent as much time speaking to survivors of military violence, you'll notice that they torture and kill basically for sport. There's no logic behind it, other than, ‘We can get away with this.'”David Mathieson, a longtime advocate, activist, and scholar focused on human rights in Myanmar, addresses the military's entrenched behavior and the country's complex socio-political landscape. He discusses the regime's arrogance, sense of entitlement, and institutional cruelty, which he describes as a “culture of recreational sadism.” He emphasizes that while the generals attempted to appear reformist to elites in previous years, its actions on the ground have always remained brutal and unchanged. Mathieson delves into Myanmar's cycles of oppression, resistance, and the military's failure to innovate in governance or counterinsurgency. He cites the 2017 Rohingya crisis as an example of brutal tactics leading to increased international condemnation and isolation. He also critiques oversimplified international narratives, urging the importance of local perspectives and understanding the complexities of both the military and ethnic armed groups like the Karen National Union and Arakan Army. Mathieson highlights the failure of peace processes such as the 2015 Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement, attributing it to the military's refusal to engage meaningfully with ethnic minorities, and with the added the complicity of international supporters who endorsed the agreement, thereby legitimizing a flawed peace process.Ultimately, Mathieson paints Myanmar as a country trapped under an irrational military enforcing fear while insisting on its own necessity. He concludes with a stark view of the military's strategy: a deliberate use of overwhelming violence to enforce submission, reflecting a “deplorable, disgusting” policy that has persisted for decades.

Did you know that if we had a nickel for every Doctor Who episode in which you have to pay the Company for the right to breathe, we'd have ten American cents? Which still wouldn't be enough — even with Kate Orman's help — to pay for today's supply of Oxygen. Notes and links A clear inspiration for this episode, and for the opening scene in particular, is Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity (2013), which was a film about George Clooney and Sandra Bullock tumbling through space while discussing their relationship or something. It was huge at the time but it seems to have vanished without a trace. So it goes. Simon alludes to a rogue AI that turns the whole world into paperclips in a scenario known as the paperclip apocalypse. This isn't a million miles away from the grey goo problem we identified three weeks ago in our episode on Smile — Episode 284: Happy to Be There. The script for this episode is available from the Doctor Who script library on the BBC website. Quite a few scripts have been available online for a while, but a much larger number were made available on the BBC Writers page in February this year, thanks to RTD's launch of the Whoniverse, we think. Nathan's recent podcast appearance was on Dave Rennie's Doctor Who podcast A Kettle and Some String, in which they did a deep dive on The Waters of Mars. At the end of the episode, when Nardole joins Bill and the Doctor in a hug, he signals his intention (delightfully), by saying ‘Cuddle'. The Blu-ray subtitles incorrectly render this as ‘Glad though. [Chuckles]'. Neither line is in Mathieson's script. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social and Kate is at @kateorman.bsky.social, while Simon is on X at @simonmoore72. This episode is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/nijdoUc7NcA Being a leader isn't about managing the day-to-day tasks of your team; it's about empowering them to handle their responsibilities effectively. Susie Matheson, the founder of The Small Stuff, shared valuable insights on this topic. She recounted her own experiences as a frontline sales manager, where she often took on administrative tasks for her team to free up their time. While this seemed helpful initially, it ultimately did more harm than good. It prevented team members from developing the skills they needed to succeed independently. Instead, leaders should focus on equipping their teams with the necessary tools and training, fostering autonomy, and holding them accountable to their KPIs. This approach not only enhances individual growth but also strengthens the overall team performance. Susie Matheson is a seasoned sales professional and the founder of The Small Stuff, a company dedicated to sales training. Born and raised in the UK, Susie has a rich background in various industries, including paint, coatings, and automotive sales. Her career took her to Germany, where she honed her sales skills and developed a passion for helping others reach their sales potential. After years in sales management roles, Susie took a break in 2019 to travel, which led to the founding of The Small Stuff. Her experience as a sales manager taught her the importance of not just meeting KPIs but also understanding the human side of sales. Today, Susie and her team focus on empowering salespeople by providing them with the right tools and training to succeed. What you'll learn: How can leaders empower their sales teams to be more autonomous and less reliant on managerial intervention? What are the key steps in developing an effective personal development plan for sales team members? How does consistency in leadership practices build trust and improve team performance? We want to hear from you! Sales leaders: What are the challenges you are faced with? Would you like some ideas on how to solve them? Hamish will shortly be releasing our first "Listener questions" episode and we want to hear from you! What's the burning question you want an answer to? What do you think of the show? "I made a film for PepWeb on the research of Beatrice Beebe. I made the video for her picture book, The Mother-Infant Interaction Picture Book, and various other short films. These are deep dives into mother-infant dyads that reveal something, i.e. rupture and repair, various kinds of dyadic interchanges. These are available for free on YouTube. That's another way that I use my analytic self and my documentary maker self together. I'm much happier with the YouTube films even though they're less produced because they reach a wide audience - they are for parents, not clinicians. I want to get the story of this way of thinking or various ways of working, or psychoanalysis itself out to the greater public because I'm such an evangelizer for it. It changed my life in so many ways, and I think it's a very different animal than what the wider world (if they've heard of it at all) thinks that it is - it's so alive these days, so integrative, and so worthy of letting people know.” Episode Description: We began with Karen sharing with us her journey from documentary filmmaker to psychoanalyst. She discusses her immersion in the world of cinema verité - "a camera capturing life" - as the pathway that brought her to train in psychoanalysis. We consider the similarities and differences between these ways of thinking and how she feels that for her, they are additive in deepening her listening abilities. She describes her films of Beatrice Beebe's work, how she serves as a consultant to filmmakers, and how she often treats those in the field, especially in regard to their (over)involvement with trauma. We close with Karen's recommendations for using YouTube to let the wider community know about psychoanalysis. Our Guest: Karen Dougherty is a Psychoanalyst (FIPA) and documentary filmmaker. She has an MA in English Literature (McGill) and an MA in Psychoanalytic Studies (University of Sheffield). She is a clinical supervisor and course instructor at the FPP and the Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, with a particular focus on attachment, relationship issues, and trauma. In addition to her private practice in rural Amaranth, Ontario, Karen is the host of the podcast for the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society, Conversations in Psychoanalysis. Since 2022, she has been a member of the IPA Think Tank on the Resolution of Intractable Conflict, for which she produces a YouTube Channel. The recipient of a PEPweb video grant, she has made several films on the research of Dr. Beatrice Beebe for clinicians and parents. She continues to collaborate on documentary projects as a researcher and story consultant (recent films include Toxic Beauty; Category: Woman, both directed by Phyllis Ellis). Bridging these two careers, Karen is both a communications consultant for psychoanalytic organizations and a mental health consultant for film and television.
